Speaker 1 (00:07):
His name is a really funny guy, and this is
his podcast in your Rise the End Ride podcast letter.
Hey everybody, thanks for tuning in. It's in the Rye
Podcast episode eighty seven. I think, uh yeah, eighty seven,
(00:32):
pretty sure. It doesn't matter. You don't need to number
them anyway. It's gonna be a solo podcast today. I
have recorded one in a while. I've been traveling a lot.
What's stressing out about my headlining set at Casada's, which
(00:53):
we'll talk about here in a moment. Do you want
to talk about some tour dates that I've got's coming up?
August twenty second, I will be in my hometown, Claire
in Iowa, doing a set at chappi'son Maine. I believe
the show is going to be at nine o'clock for
(01:14):
that one. August twenty eighth, I'll be in Santa Fe
at the Tusuki Casino. I believe that's a Thursday nights.
And then September seventeenth, which is a Wednesday nights, I'll
be in Socorro, New Mexico at the Loma Theater opening
for Jim Rule. Tickets are on sale rights now if
(01:39):
you go to their websites. I think I have a
link on my website Funny Fletcher dot com. September twenty fourth,
Also Wednesday, I'll be headlining in Taos, New Mexico at
the Burger Stand. And then Saturday, September twenty seventh, I'll
be in Grants, New Mexico, headlining a show I do
not know the venue yet. And September twenty ninth through
(02:01):
October fourth, I will be in Calgary, Alberta headlining at
the Comedy Cave, and the tickets are on sale for that.
If you know anyone in Calgary, send them to a
show on there Monday through Saturday, six days, six shows.
I also have. I think the date's October twenty sixth
(02:24):
in Berlin. I don't know the venue on that one yet,
And then November sixth and Albuquerque. Also don't know the
venue on that yet, but I believe Mark Curry will
be headlining, so it'll be cool. I'll have more details
about that when I when I get them. So yeah,
(02:45):
So it's been a while since I've recorded the podcast.
A lot happened in July, a lot of shows, a
lot of awesome shows. I also forgot to mention in
my last podcast that I got to work with a
guy named learn More Janasi. If you don't know who
that is, he was a finalist on America's Got Talent.
He's a comedian from Zimbabwe. Super funny, super nice guy,
(03:09):
super fun to watch. He just moved to LA this week.
So if you get a chance to see that guy,
go check him out. He was fun to work with
and I'm hoping he does well in LA. I think
he's gonna do awesome. I know he wants to get
into acting and stuff like that. He's gonna it's gonna
be great. So yeah, July, let's talk about July. I
(03:33):
had a lot of shows. July fifth, I did the
Comedy Battle at Casada's Comedy Club and I lost, you guys,
I lost, but had a really good set. I thought
had a really good, tight two minute sets, did like
eight or nine one liners, pretty good stuff. Who won?
(03:57):
Josh forty a one. Congrats to Josh. Jaco Tara won
the night before, so congrats to the little Jakie, Little
Jaki Otaro. So that was a fun night. It was
a super fun night. It was a it was a
format I had never really seen in a comedy contest before,
So that was kind of cool, like you'd go up
(04:18):
against someone else and then the crowd votes based on
you know your set, so like the first round was
two minutes and then made it to the next round
is five minutes, and then I think the finals was
probably ten minutes. So yeah, it was It was a
lot of fun as a packed crowd. And then the
(04:38):
following week, I went to the Funny Bone in Saint Charles, Missouri.
Was there with my buddy Tim Gather and the MC
for the week was Ian McIntyre. He's a local guy,
super funny dude. I had a blast working with Tim.
The crowds were great, the staff was awesome. It was
(04:59):
my first time doing in the Saint Charles Funny Bone.
I had worked the Saint Louis one before, which is
I guess not too far from the Saint Charles one,
and they ran by the same people, so mm hmmm,
so yeah, hopefully I'll get to go do those again.
But yeah, like I said, the crowds were great, it's
(05:22):
kind of funny. One night's uh, this guy came came
up to Tim after the show and he was like,
I've seen a lot of comedy in my day and
you should be ashamed of yourself. I want a dipshit, Like,
(05:42):
why would you say that to a comedian? You know,
it was a really good show too, Like it seemed
like everyone had a good time, and like, well he
said it, you know he like Tim's talking to people
who were in the crowd buying. They're buying T shirts
from him and tell him, telling him how funny he
was and stuff, and then this dipshit comes over and
says that, Uh see, I was Uh it was weird.
(06:08):
But Tim ended up writing some jokes about him later
in the week, so, uh, he has a lot of fun.
I gotta see Lauren Peterson again. She's a comic that
I've met in Saint Louis years ago. And then she
came down to Albuquerque and did some shows. She did
a guest spot one night, did greats. Yeah, just a cool,
(06:30):
cool club. Like I said, the staff was really cool.
So hopefully I didn't get to go back. Uh. And
then the next week I was back home. I did.
On the eighteenth, I did Marble Brewery. It was a
Zach Abta show. Zach puts on a great show. That
(06:51):
one was that was sold out as well, which was cool.
I'm not sure how many people that place holds, but
it was like little side room at Marble, and I
was packed in there. It was a cool show. Josh
Fournier host that I featured, and then Zach headlines, so
it's a super good lineup. Let's see July nineteenth, I
(07:16):
did a show at Turtle Mountain, which is was one
of my favorite spots, mostly because it's a mile down
the road, not even a mile probably, but no. My
my pal Eddie Stevens runs the show, and I had
written I don't know, I've been writing a lot, which
is nice. So I wrote about ten to fifteen jokes
(07:38):
and then so I just asked him if I go
do guest spot and just try new materials. So I
went down there and tried out ten minutes of new
stuff and most of it worked pretty decently. Couple of
the things bombed, but they got some laughs, but the
punchlines didn't really hit, so it did work and on
(08:00):
those and but overall it's a fun show, except for
some dipshits in the crowd, you know, talking and hackling
and stuff like that. And then on the twenty third,
I actually went to Taos with Eddie Stevens and did
a did a set at that Burger Stand, a place
(08:20):
that I'm headlining in September. Eddie headlined this one and
asked if I wanted to go up and do some time.
So we just made a little day trip and went
up there, did the did the show, and came right back.
It was a fun little spot. They had like an
open mic beforehand. There's probably five or six open micers,
and then then we did our show and I thought
(08:43):
it was fun. I thought it was a good little crowd.
Chad Riding runs the show. Actually met Shad several years ago,
probably about ten years ago in Phoenix. We did a
show together, and he lives in tows now and runs
this show every Wednesday at the Burger Stand and then
but he's he's building a little comedy scene in Twas,
(09:04):
which is pretty cool. Towas is pretty cool, like Tortoisty Town,
a lot of skiing and stuff like that. It's we
always enjoyed going to Twas. So I'll be there September
twenty fourth, if you're in the area. Yeah. So the
next day I had to go to Alamgordo, which is
(09:26):
down south here about three and a half three hours
from Albuquerque. I was headlining the End of the Mountain
Gods casino with my buddy A. J. Martinez featured for me,
and we're kind of worried about the show. There's a
lot of flooding going down in that area, so we
(09:47):
weren't sure what type of crowd we'd have. And they
have a MC from El Paso. I guess he wasn't
gonna show up. He was kind of afraid of the flooding.
Then he saw that I was headlining, It's like, I'm
gonna make it. And it was that Sam Butler, who
I haven't seen in that seems I don't know. I
don't even remember how long it's been since i'd seen him,
(10:09):
but I think that last time I saw him was
probably an Alpaso sometimes, so it's been a while, but yeah,
I've done Sam for years. Sam actually does a lot
of stand up comedy in Mexico. He does stand up
in Spanish, which is super interesting. He said that Mexico
(10:32):
City has like a pretty good comedy scene going on
right now. Like he compared it kind of like to
how La was, you know in the late seventies early
eighties with their little comedy boom. They had, So that's
pretty cool. You know, I had never really heard of
(10:53):
comedy in Mexico. I don't know. I don't know if
I know any comedy comedians from Mexico or anything like that.
But so that's pretty cool that I can do comedy
in English and Spanish. But I think that that'd be
pretty cool to do a show in Mexico City or
something like that, see how it would go. So maybe
(11:15):
one d it make it happen. But that show was awesome.
That was a it's a really cool show. I it
was nice to get some practice from my headline set
for Casadas too, So it's trying to do forty five
minutes of stuff that weren't on my Ginger Snaps special,
(11:40):
and I was very close. I was right around like
forty to forty two minutes or something like that. But
I tried a lot of new stuff that night too.
I did my did my headline set, and then tried
out some new stuff and most of it worked. I
think one joke didn't hit, which made me sad because
(12:02):
I thought it was pretty funny. But but no, overall
is good. The crowd was fun, it was nice to
see Sam again. AJ did a great job, so it's fun.
Then I had to get up super early. AJ was
nice enough to drive me to the airport in Albuquerque
the next morning, and I flew to Denver to dog
(12:25):
sit for a buddy of mine. I didn't end up
doing any shows in Denver while I was there. It
was only there a few days anyway, But yeah, my
buddy Dennis picked me up. We had some pizza, We
watched Happy Gilmore two, pretty disappointing. The pizza was great,
the movie was disappointing. Dennis is always great. It's always
(12:47):
fun to hang out with him. He always likes when
I mentioned him on the podcast too, Hey Dennis, So yeah,
I did that. I watched Dusty Slay's news special when
I was there on Netflix called Wet Heat. If you
haven't seen it yet, check it out. Dusty's a fantastic comic.
(13:07):
I gotta see him a little over a year ago
at Casada. Is working out a lot of that stuff,
so it's pretty cool to see, like a really polished
version of everything he was working on. Plus, Dusty is
one of the nicest dudentes I met in the business.
So go check that out. And I gotta hang out
(13:27):
with my buddy Don his fiance Amy, So that's always fun.
When I came back to New Mexico, I the night
before my Casada's gig, I got a headline spot at
Corrinos in Alamgordo, New Mexico, which is actually down by
end of the Mountain Gods. So again another three three
(13:50):
and a half hour trip, and AJ Martinez went with
me on that one. So we did. We did the
show Crenos. It's like Italian restaurants. They have their own
little room where we did comedy and the crowd was awesome.
Stude Carlos sets it. I don't know how to pronounce
(14:11):
his last name Castorina, cast Aina. I don't know. Him
and his brother Michael are super cool, super cool guys.
They've booked me on a lot of stuff, so I
should learn how to pronounce their last name. Yeah, Carlos
is a DJ also, but he he did some time
up front, did like fifteen minutes, did great, warned up
the crowd awesome. AJ had another good set. I thought
(14:34):
my set went pretty well again. I was working on
my forty five minutes and I thought I hit it
pretty well. And then again once I hit that, I
tried some new stuff and it all worked, which was nice.
So overall in that stretch, I tried probably about fifteen
(14:54):
to twenty new jokes that I had written just within
the last few weeks, which is nice. I don't know,
I don't know what happened, but when I was in Reno,
that's when I kind of started like writing a bunch more.
And you know, my my buddy Tim that I work with,
Tim Gaither, you know, he's like I always tell him
(15:16):
stories like all the time, try to make him laugh
and stuff because he's hard hard to make laugh, so
I always tell him stories and he's trying to get
me to tell some of these stories on stage and stuff.
So so I've been writing some stories for the for
you know, trying to write them into jokes, and then
just doing that, I was coming up with other stuff.
(15:37):
So it was kind of nice to get some writing
done and try it out. Just I don't know. Sometimes
it's hard to try new material when you're not super
confident about it. But I don't know. That's that's why
I book myself at the Turtle Mountain and Eddie gave
me that set. I was just like, I'm just gonna do.
I was gonna do new shit and see how it goes.
(15:58):
And I wasn't getting paid and they didn't paid again
in so who cares, you know, but it was nice
to try that out. And then so yeah, August second
was the big day headline set at Casata's Man had
I hadn't been this nervous for a show in a
long time. As soon as I booked it, I was
(16:20):
super nervous. And because I think a lot of people
don't realize how hard headlining is compared to featuring, Like
it's it's not just like a longer feature set. You know,
it's hard. I don't know how to describe it, really,
but yeah, Plus, you know, another thing that made me
(16:41):
nervous was, you know, are people going to show up?
It's a big club. See, it's like three hundred people,
and I think on Tuesday the dude texted me and
said they had less than fifty tickets sold. So I
was kind of freaking out about that, you know, because
I was like, you small crowd and they're not laughing
a lot. Now, am I gonna fill forty five minutes
(17:03):
of just stuff that's none on my special? Which I
don't know, I shouldn't worry about shit like that, but
you know, you worry about stuff like that. And then
the day of the show, he texted me and said
they're up to one thirty. So it's like, okay, it's
not bad at all, and I just I worked worked
a lot on my set and going over things and
(17:27):
got to the club and they ended up having a
I think he said one eighty overall, so one eighty
out of three hundred seats. Not bad. Didn't sell it out,
but you know, it was an awesome crowd. I'll uh
share a picture of it on the screen here. And
then yeah, what a what a fun night. Just uh,
(17:48):
you know, Eddie Stevens hosted. Eddie's a really good host,
so I wanted him to host the show. So he
has good energy and he's pretty well so it's good
to like watch him engage the audience and kind of
see like what they're laughing at and stuff like that.
And then Stephen Michael Casada, who owns the club, He
(18:12):
ended up doing a little sets, which was great and
so I was really cool. And then he was sitting
in the crowd with his wife and I think it
was his mom. I could be wrong, but that was cool.
And then AJ went up and featured did a great job.
And yeah, I was so nervous when I walked out
(18:33):
on that stage. And once once I got on stage,
I think it was fine after a few minutes. It's
kind of crazy because there's a so they have a
clock on the wall and it counts down, so I
could just see that the whole time, and like the
whole time, I'm thinking, like, can I fill this forty
(18:56):
five minutes with stuff that's not on the special? And
so a lot of that was going through my mind.
And then I, uh, I accidentally did a couple of
jokes that were on the special. Just sometimes you have
like a certain order of jokes and you do them
in a certain way, and then so you used to
(19:17):
tell them it right after a certain joke. So I
had a couple of those and I was like, oh shit,
that's that was on the special. But they got laughs,
So that's all that matters, you know, That's all that
mattered to me. Anyway. I don't know. I don't know
if there are any comedy snubs in the audience. Like
I just watched a special and those drunks were on there.
(19:38):
So I think there were like two or three that
I told maybe that we're on there, and then then
the times taken down. It's like, oh shit, So I
missed a couple of the jokes that I had planned
on doing too, So I think I would have been
able to pull off the forty five without doing those.
But oh well, it's not a big deal to anybody
(19:59):
else but me. Yeah, I feel like the crowd. The
crowd is good. I think everything gotta laugh pretty much
pretty much I did. I was able to squeeze in
some new jokes figure out what to put them in
the sets. One of my new jokes that I just
wrote about a month ago got one of the biggest
(20:21):
laughs of the sets, so that was pretty exciting. Yeah,
just overall, what a cool night. Had a lot of
friends and family show up. A lot of old friends
that were there like when I started comedy were there,
so that was cool. So we gotta hang out. I
(20:42):
gotta hang out with those guys after the show and stuff.
Some dudes that I worked with at Pizza Hut back
in the day. That's I was working at Pizzahut when
I started comedy. It was actually my twenty four year
anniversary also, so that worked out pretty cool. So yeah,
these dudes worked with me at Pizza Hut when I
was like, I'm gonna do stand up. I want to
be a media you know. And one of the dudes
(21:04):
that he was that worked with me, he was like,
why don't you just shut the fuck up and do it?
That was my friend Nate. He was there that night,
so h so that was really cool. Yeah. I ended
up being a great nights. I got to watch the
video and stuff pretty awesome. So yeah, just when the
(21:27):
show was over, just all the stress went away. I
was so happy about that. And yeah, I just just
a great night, one of the one of the better
nights I've had in comedy. So that was that was
really cool. It would have been cool to sell it out,
but whatever, I did my best, God damn it. So yeah,
(21:51):
I got their shows coming up. Trying to add more
to the calendar. I got some other stuff to talk about.
I'm gonna do that on the next podcast though. Trying
to get the website done in the Rye podcast dot
com still working on. It's been hard to finish for
some reason, probably beausn't been writing so much and focusing
(22:15):
on the show. So now that's a I don't have
a show for a couple of weeks. Figure I can
get that knocked out. Also, if you want to sign
up for my newsletter, go to Funny Fletcher dot com.
There's a pop up that usually comes on the screen.
You can sign up for the newsletter. If you do
want to sign up in the pop up doesn't come up,
(22:36):
just send me a message. I'll get you on there.
Just give me your email address, and yeah, I do
like a monthly newsletter or send stuff out, usually podcast
episodes and other dumb shit. I think that's it for
this month, this month, for this episode which beat this month,
(23:02):
I'm working on getting some more guests, though, h Scheduling
conflicts early is hard. I mentioned that before a million times,
but anyway, Yeah, thanks to Jarret Reddick from Billing for
Soup for the intro music and John Singleton from Anesthesia
(23:23):
for the outro music. I know what I did fight for,
what I did fa for is that we get lot
o people a chance to headline. And I'm so proud
(23:45):
with Kurt Fletcher, and I'm so happy to see a
big crowd for him because he deserves it. So I'm
not the show Goodnight. I really wanted to thank you
for coming, a lot of the thing a j Eddie
and first and most of all, Kurt Fletcher. Thank you guys.
