Welcome to this week's IndieArtist Music Hustle with Blind
Intelligence.
I'm your host, ms Ronnie, and Ialways seek to give you
exquisite Ukrainian repertoire.
(00:35):
With all the scandals that hashappened in the American music
and entertainment industry in2024, with many lawsuits being
filed, everyone is a juror inthe court of public opinion and
celebrity culture is dwindling.
First it was the Cat WilliamsClub Shay Shay interview that
set the entertainment world onblast.
(00:57):
Then it was the explosivelawsuit against Sean Puffy Combs
for the treatment ofex-girlfriend Cassie Ventura.
Oh, and then there was the rapbattle of the century between
Kendrick Lamar and Drake, whichresulted in the phenomenon Not
Like Us.
Kendrick Lamar's pop-outconcert happened with the West
Coast light up the stage forJuneteenth.
(01:18):
Kendrick then released thevideo to Not Like Us on July 4th
.
Then there was the publicreaction, as well as Lil Wayne's
reaction, to Kendrick'sannouncement that he is
performing at the Super Bowl in2025.
Then the formal legal documentfrom Drake and his team against
Spotify and Universal MusicGroup, accusing the music giants
of dishonesty, which many tookas a slap in the face to the
(01:41):
culture of the battle of rap.
Jay-z is involved in a sexualassault lawsuit with Sean Combs
and claims that he and SeanCombs were never friends.
Now both Jay-Z's lawyer and thealleged victim's lawyer have
been in the battle of the egoson social media.
To end it thus far, becausethere's still a few more days
(02:05):
left in the year.
Kendrick drops GNX and Tyler, the creator, drops I'm Really
that Guy.
So let's just start off with theCat Williams Club Shay Shay
interview.
William's interview on ClubShea Shea served as a
significant omen for the musicindustry, as it highlighted
(02:27):
underlying tensions and issuesthat have been long present.
William's candid discussionabout the ethics in the
entertainment world shone aspotlight on the treatment of
artists, particularly those frommarginalized communities of
artists, particularly those frommarginalized communities.
His revelations aboutexploitation and the pressures
(02:50):
faced by entertainers resonateddeeply within the industry,
prompting many to reconsidertheir roles and responsibilities
.
This conversation set aprecedent, urging artists and
other entertainers to speak outagainst injustices, which could
lead to a broader movement forchange.
Sean Combs' legacy is nowfraught with controversy due to
(03:12):
the numerous lawsuits filedagainst him.
What once was a narrative ofsuccess and innovation in the
music industry is nowovershadowed by allegations of
misconduct.
Five years ago, combs wascelebrated for his contributions
to hip-hop and as a businessman.
However, the current landscapecasts a long shadow over his
(03:35):
achievements, potentiallyredefining him as a figure of
scandal rather than inspiration.
This transformation in publicperception could hinder his
ability to influence theindustry positively moving
forward.
The beef between Kendrick Lamarand Drake has had mixed
repercussions on Drake's career.
(03:56):
While some argue that it hassolidified Kendrick's position
as a leading voice in hip-hop,others suggest that it has put
Drake in a prec precariousposition, leading to a decline
in his public perception.
According to industry reports, drake's streaming numbers have
faced fluctuations, indicatingthat the battle has both
(04:18):
strengthened and weakened hisbrand.
Public sentiment appearsdivided, with some fans
expressing disillusionment withDrake's response to the beef,
and they're calling his fansstans because they're saying
that they defend no matter what.
Kendrick Lamar's strategicapproach in the rap field has
(04:39):
indeed had a crippling effect onDrake's relationship with the
black culture.
By addressing issues ofauthenticity and cultural
representation directly in hislyrics, kendrick has called into
question Drake's place withinthe genre.
This has not only alienatedsome of Drake's core fan base,
but has prompted discussionsaround cultural appropriation in
(05:03):
hip-hop, further complicatingDrake's legacy.
Now let's move on to Lil Wayneand I'm just doing like little
snippets because I'm going toget into what I'm going to talk
about.
Lil Wayne's team did indeedseem to have hyped up perceived
(05:24):
beef with Kendrick Lamar, whichgenerated media attention and
engaged fans.
This tactic is a commonstrategy in the industry to
boost visibility and sales.
However, in this case, I thinkthat it was real and both sides
saw with eyes wide open howpeople really are, because I
(05:45):
think that some of the commentsthat was made and the criticisms
and it was just so much that Imean people was just being just
downright disrespectful.
I feel for no reason andalthough people may not have
agreed with Lil Wayne's response, it's still his response.
Lil Wayne's response is stillhis response and people can
(06:10):
disagree, but I think that theway that a lot of people went
about it was wrong on both endsand so I think that both of
their eyes was wide open to seehow people really are.
And I think that it was hardfor Lil Wayne because some of
the other controversialstatements that he has made, I
(06:32):
think feel some of the commentsthat was made towards him.
Moving on, drake's legal battleagainst UMG and Spotify was
ill-advised for several reasons.
Firstly, it poses significantrisk to his business
relationships within theindustry, which are crucial to
(06:53):
his career longevity.
Drake could not release 100gigs of music without UMG's
permission because ofcontractual obligations that
govern his partnership with thelabel.
However, he was able to dropdiss tracks during the rap
battle, since such tracks oftenfall under artistic expression
(07:14):
rather than formal releases.
So I am not reallyunderstanding why he wanted the
label to step in.
And what is this I would say,pre-lawsuit about?
Now I'll throw psychic salonbella in for a little second.
Psychic salon bella haspredicted a complex future for
(07:39):
jay-z, suggesting that he willnavigate the tumultuous waters
of the industry with resilience, but she did feel that his power
in the industry will diminishover.
I think she said the next sevento ten years or something like
that.
I think that this is profound, because I never heard of the
(08:01):
esoterics being mentioned in apublic formal statement, so you
know, I thought that wasprofound.
I think that the informalcollaboration between Tyler the
Creator and Kendrick Lamar, withboth dropping tracks on the
same beat, symbolizes aresurgence of west coast unity
(08:23):
and hip hop, as well as a greatbusiness move.
And I say it's a collaborationbecause I think that it was all
for the same cause and bothcould benefit even though they
didn't even collaborate.
I would say, in thistraditional sense, I still
consider this a collaboration, acollaboration, but this
(08:50):
collaboration not collaboration, quote unquote is seen as a push
towards solidarity, which could, according to various industry
analysts, could lead to a newwave of West Coast dominance in
the hip hop scene.
So what I am wanting to talkabout is is how the scandals in
the music and entertainmentindustry of 2024 is going to
(09:11):
affect the music andentertainment industry for 2025.
The scandals in the music andentertainment industry in 2024
will serve as a pivotal catalystfor change.
In 2025, as artistsincreasingly use their platforms
to address social injustices,we may witness a profound shift
(09:35):
towards accountability andtransparency within the industry
.
This movement is not merely atrend.
It represents a significanttransformation in how artists
engage with their audiences andthe broader societal context.
First and foremost, the natureof these scandals highlights
systematic issues that have beenlong ignored.
(09:57):
From allegations of misconductto calls for equitable
representation, artists are nowmore willing to confront
uncomfortable truths.
The brave stance encourages fansto reflect on their own values
and expectations regarding theindustry.
As a result, the connectionbetween artists and their
audiences deepens, fostering ashared sense of purpose and
(10:19):
accountability.
Furthermore, the shift towardstransparency empowers artists to
share their storiesauthentically.
By breaking the silencesurrounding their experiences,
they not only reclaim theirnarrative, but also inspire
others to do the same.
This authenticity is crucial inreshaping the industry's
(10:40):
narrative, as it allows for morediverse range of voices to be
heard, particularly those whohave been marginalized in the
past.
In addition, the potential forcollaboration among artists who
share similar values could leadto innovative projects that
challenge the status quo.
These collaborations may resultin music and content that
(11:03):
resonate more deeply with theaudiences, as they reflect
genuine experiences andperspectives.
The industry, therefore, cansee a rise in creative works
that prioritize social justiceand equity, leading to more
inclusive environments.
The influence of social mediacannot be overlooked.
Platforms like Twitter, instagram and TikTok amplifies
(11:26):
artists' messages, allowing themto reach a wider audience
instantaneously.
This immediacy creates a senseof urgency around social issues,
compelling the industry torespond more swiftly to calls
for change.
Consequently, artists canleverage their influence to
advocate for policies andpractices that promote
(11:46):
accountability and transparency.
As we look ahead to 2025, it isessential to recognize that
this potential shift is notwithout challenges.
Resistance from traditionalindustry gatekeepers may arise
as they seek to maintain thestatus quo.
However, the collective voiceof artists and their supporters
(12:08):
can create a formidable forcefor change.
By continuing to advocate forjustice and transparency, the
music and entertainment industrycan evolve in ways that benefit
not only the artists but alsotheir audiences.
The scandals of 2024 may verywell serve as a turning point
for the music and entertainmentindustry.
(12:29):
As artists become more vocalabout injustices, we are likely
to see a transformative shifttowards accountability and
authenticity, also enrich thecultural landscape for future
generations, ensuring that theindustry's evolution is rooted
(12:50):
in the values of transparencyand social justice.
I hope 2025 be a great year foreveryone.
