last week we had the last matchupthat for what was going to be

the last record in the finals,and it was Prince and the Revolution,
Purple Rain versus Pearl jam ten andabout halfway through the tournament, things switched
over and we started letting social mediadecide what the outcome was going to be.
So what we're going to do firstbefore we get into announcing which record
one? Which there's going to bea little bit of controversy around, I
think which which record one? Andwhy? But before we get into which

a whole lot of feedback to share. So this is going to be pretty

like the track listing is so importantto me, and I can't even

Yeah, Prince was well on hisway to superstart him. Uh. Ten
comes out. I'm twenty one,and it hit me immediately. These guys
were young, hungry, and loud, just what I needed to cure my
hair band Hangover Black and Gardner twoof my favorite Pearl Jam songs. I'm
going with ten based on how themusic made me feel the first time I
heard it. Boom going strong forten? So far all right? Joe

Hu says that two albums easily inmy top twenty of all time for very
different reasons. When Dove's Cry wasmy first introduction to Prince and he still
loves that song. So many hitsin one album, so hard to pick
anything over it. Yet I'm goingto take ten over Purple Rain. It's
close to flawless to me. Myfirst introduction to Pearl Jam was Seventh Row
at a summerfest in Milwaukee. Hadn'theard the album at this point, but

the live show was amazing. WhenI got the album shortly after, it
didn't disappoint, no stingers musically andvocally solid across the board. Catch me
on the right day and this mightbe album number one on my list.

That would have been a right.I didn't see him till like the verses
too. I've seen him several timessince time, but I didn't see him
like prior to the Versus album comingout. And they were still stellar then,

pro jam rins. I don't know. I mean, yeah, well there's
more to the story. We'll getthere. And yeah, I was also
surprised when I foka. I wasexpecting them all to be like Prince Prince,

so. But there's a couple fromFacebook for Purple Rain. I can't remember

what's that Pearl Jam right, yeah, okay, all right, so there
there are a couple from Facebook forPurple Rain, which you guys probably should
be getting too, soon, butthen we will share the overall social media
results, which were far different fromFacebook. So Alex s said, I'm
deep in in an early Pearl Jamphase. At the moment, they were

just fantastic, and ten still holdsup incredibly well. I dig Prince,
but its music never moved me asmuch as Pearl Jams has, So my
vote goes to ten. All right, all right, this is my last
one. But it's a doozy.It's a doozy. Jeffery d says,
this is a tough, tough choice. I'm so torn between the two.
Purple Rain is one of my favoritealbums, in Pearl Jam is another one

is upset with us for having himmake this choice, he said. When
Peupla Ran came out, I hadjust finished my first year in college.
I literally went through three cussetts ofit before the summer was over. I'm
very emotionally attached to this record.Pearl Jam Tim came out at the end

of the summer of nineteen ninety one. I'm going to be honest here,
and my wife loved it from dayone. I boycotted it for several years
just because everyone was making such afuss over it. I literally didn't listen
to it for years after it wasreleased. Then one day I put on
her favorite record and I felt likean idiot. I mean, what the
literal fuck was I thinking, Jesus, this is a great album. I

couldn't put it down. After that, I apologized to him from making fun
of her for listening to air quoteshurl jam as I called them before,
so many insults. Fine, there'sno need for this. Ten is the
greatest debut album I've ever heard.Tennis fantastic front to back group, your
face off rock album. It doesn'tlet up from once to release. It's
pure genius. What a way toopen up with once that song is great,

then to finish with release, whichis as good as once. This
album is a ten out of tenprople. Rain is so diverse. Prince
is doing everything on this record,from rock to R and B to love
songs, and it has motown vibesat times. It has everything. With
all that being said, with muchthought and playing over these albums several times
this weekend on a nine hundred milemorow trip. My vote is for Pearl

Jam ten as much as I lovePurple Rain. If both these albums were
in front of me, I'm definitelylistening to both of them, of course,
but I'm listening to ten first.If we were comparing a different Prince
album, this outcome might be different, but we aren't, so I'm sticking
to my choice. Yeah, that'swhat I was talking about, where Like,
if it were me, I wouldI would have, you know,
picked the different Pearl Jam record,But I thought, I'm sorry, Prince

record, but I just thought,overall, this is probably the most successful
one to put in a Yeah tournament, I might relate to the party,
but I've never heard Pearl Jam referenceshurl Jam and that is awesome. Yeah,

that hard for me, though.Both albums are masterpieces from start to finish.
If you ask me which one I'mgoing to spend nine times out of
ten picking or I'm picking Purple Rain. Yes, I'm not going to I'm
not going to deep dive these albumsagain. But if I hear almost any
song from Purple Rain, I willlisten to the remainder of the album sometime
soon after. This has never happenedto me with Ten, and That's why
I'm picking Purple Rain. It wasthat simple for me making a gunback.

free. These albums were both aquantum shift for me. Purple Rain opened
up my consciousness to multiple genres ofmusic that I didn't listen to before it.
Ten marked a return to real lifeand real issues to rock and roll

for me. Both were so outsideof the box with their times, and
yet both are timeless and still importanttoday. Well, I love that ten
helped me bring out my beloved rockback into seriousness. I will be forever
grateful to Prince and Purple Rain forbroadening my horizons musically. So I vote
for Purple Rain. Yes, Holycount, it's a celebration. I mean,

even though it's Michael still, Imean that was being excited. So
here's the thing. We've been lettingsocial media decide this, and I haven't
put a lot of information out thereabout Twitter, but I've been running Twitter
polls every week with along with theFacebook comments that we're asking for, and
every week Twitter has absolutely decided withwhat we've had on Facebook for votes.

So I haven't really mentioned it muchbecause it just was like, you know,
hundreds of votes against whatever, SoI haven't mentioned a lot. Well,
this week he was completely the oppositefrom Facebook. So the total votes
from Facebook and Twitter, Purple Rainactually ended up winning by quite a bit.
So the total votes for Purple Rainbetween Twitter and Facebook was fifty four

votes and total votes for Pearl Jamten between Twitter and Facebook was twenty six.
So although the feedback on the pagemakes it look like Pearl Jam one
for instant the Revolution are absolutely movingon to the final route. Joe Walsh
is excited about it. Joe Walshis excited about it. So I just
want to make sure that everybody's clearon that. Like, you know,

I think we've damn near begged foreverybody to follow us on all social media
enough, so you know, yeah, hopefully some people got involved in those
votes, and maybe some of thosetwenty six were the folks that commented on
Facebook or whatever. I don't know. But having said that, out of
all things being equal, the finalround of the tournament is going to be,

Yeah, that's not at all annoying. The final round of the tournament
is going to be LEDs Upland four, which the way that it made its
way here was it first beat GarthBrooks No Fences, then it beat him
tell Because the Black Album, andthen came up against Carol King Tapestry and
therefore LEDs Upland four is in thefinals. That will be going against Prince
and the Revolution. Purple Rain,which had a really hard road. It

first knocked out Fleetwood Mac Rumors,then it knocked out Michael Jackson Thriller,
then it knocked out Pearl jam Ten, so holy Cow, Purple Rain.
Yeah, Purple Rain is like,I mean, it's an amazing record,
which we'll get into in a coupleof minutes, but like you talk about
a Cinderella story, Holy Cow,Like you know what I mean to beat
like those many records in a rowto end up here choices? Yeah,

yeah, Well we'll get into thatnext week. We'll bust out the forty
year old out Canadian Club. ButI do want to say that almost every
comment we got on Twitter didn't comewith just oh, Purple Rain for sure,
Like almost every comment for Twitter waslike actually, we had a whole
whole bunch of people leave gifts thatwere like I can't choose, or like
someone driving on their knees being likeno, you know, or whatever.
We had a whole lot of that. But then almost everybody who voted for

Purple Rain echoed like Joe and Mike'sthoughts and Jeff and everybody, and it
was like, oh, this israzor thin, but for me, it's
Purple Rain, or you know whatI mean. So I didn't call a
lot of those comments because a lotof it was just very quick like that.
It was easier for me just torecap it this way, So,
holy cow, how you guys feelabout the two final records? Good?

Feels really good. She was goingto be mad for a second and now
she's feeling real good. So,as we always do about this time,

and Purple Rain laying on the table, which one you're picking up first?
Purple Rain? So I'm gonna bethe odd one out? Get out?

I remember when that one time whenwe were a three person show. You
remember that, Yeah, this isgonna be awkward with you guys recorded my
house from now and asking you toedit it. You'll just hear me.

Okay, So here's the notes thatI made for myself to remind myself

why I made this difficult decision.I loved both albums as soon as I
heard No Like. As soon asI heard both of these records, like,
there was no like LEDs Up andfour didn't grow on me. Purple
Rain didn't grow on me like.The moment that I heard both records,
I was just like, this isthe greatest thing that's ever happened for me.
I can't even look at him andgo, well, I like one
more than the other. I trulyloved these albums equally, So I started

to look at some other factors.You can't even go into sales because they've
sold both sold of Bajellian copies wasnot an accurate number. Yes that is
yep, I look it up rightnow. Yeah, I'll say one bejelliant.
They both did that. So andthen one thing that I thought was
gonna be just saying factor, Istarted coming back through some of the feedback
we got and I thought, youknow, well, maybe I can find
my answer here. And the biggestthing that stuck out to me was something
(17:32):
that was said about Purple Rain whereor I'm sorry about led Zeplan four,
where Mike Downing had said led Zeplanfour caused him to look forward and backward
into led Zepplin's catalog, but CarolKing didn't. Yeh. Both of these
records did that for me. Withthe bold artists like Prince, I absolutely
all of my love of Prince startedthe first time I heard Purple Rain and
I immediately went back before it,and then everything he did after that.

I was like, the first guyin line is number record is? I
want to say it's fifth? Well, there's for you, Prince Controversy,
Dirty Mind nineteen ninety nine so,and then Purple Rain, so sixth.
They get too many fingers there becauseI went because I went through five and
then started counting again. I seeyou shouldn't be around numbers. So but

everything that came out from Prince afterthat, I was right on top off.
You know, LEDs uplands discography hadalready finished. But by the time
I heard four, I went backand heard one, two, three,
and then everything that you know,the four albums, like five albums that
came after it. So these areboth obviously Pearl Jam but this was the
Purple Rain was the first Prince albumyou ever heard. Yeah, I don't

know them. I probably said thatbefore and listen, yeah, I was
like eight when it came out orwhatever, and it was already a whole
ordeal getting it, as we discussedon the PM Marcy episode. So now
Purple Rain does have more variety forsure. There's just LEDs Upland four is
just a rock album. It's justa rock album. Purple Rain is a
rock album and an R and Balbum, and it's got ballads and it's

a funk album and it's a dancealbum. Like I get that, but
here's for me, the deciding factorbetween the two, these two records specifically
is influence. LEDs Upland four haslaunched a billion guitar players. There's jokes
about don't walk into a guitar storeand play Stairway to Heaven because that's the
first thing every guitar player learns toplay, a Stairway to Heaven. Yeah,

I know, I'm not being funny. You've never seen Wayne's World.
There's a whole thing where he's tryingto buy this guitar in the whole movie,
and he walks in. The firstthing he does, he picks up
and he goes to playing. Theguy grabs the fretboard the salesperson and is
like, hey, didn't you seethe sign? And he turns around.
There's a science says no stairway andno stairway denied, you know, and
whatever. We like, there's thatrunning joke about that. But like there's
a billion kids who have picked upa Les Paul because of LED's upland four,

like they heard the rift to BlackDog. Heyy mama, I heard
the Rift to Black Dog, heardthe solo and stairway. You know,
we have Zach Wilde because of thesolo and Stairway. Now, one thing
I want to make clear, though, is that we're talking about these two
records specif because if you get intothe overall artists influence, Prince launched a
million ships as far as R andB the store laying on the table,

you're I would put on lads upon four first and then and then halfway
through Black Dog, be really sadthat I didn't put purple rain on and
be yeah, no, like asin I would listen to the one before
the other for the If you getif that was the thing, like you
have to pick which of these recordsis better. I would pick Lads Up
On Four as the better record,but because of I've eliminated everything else.

And the one reason I can thinkof is it's far more influential to music
that one record specifically, Like Ithink, like take somebody like quest Love,
who we probably only have because ofan artist like Prince. Okay,
if you say to him, what'sthe most influential thing about Prince Purple,
Rain's gonna be like the sixth orseventh thing that he lists. But if
you go talk to like any famousguitar player and you're like, why do

you play guitar? And if theysay Jimmy Page and you're like why,
they're gonna be like, well,I got Lads Up on four when I
was saying, you know what Imean, so, and I'm not saying
my reasoning is right. I'm justthat's how I came to this decision.
I guess we're going to find out. I mean, and as you've said
on the show, I've said onthe show like I have a purple Prince
tattoo, like I you know,I own a far more Prince material than

I do led Zepplin. You know, led Zepplin only had nine records in
the studio and a couple of liverecords and a couple of hits packages and
all that stuff, and Prince releasedI don't know, thirty five some studio
records, you know, So Ish yeah, and I have a you
know, metric crap ton of Princematerial. But we're talking about this record
versus that record, right, youknow what I'm saying, Like, even
if this was, like my favoriteled Zepplin record is the one before it's

led Zeppelin three. If we weretalking about led Zepplin three, Purple Rain
would have won this easily. Eventhough led Zeplin three is my favorite record,
A total of no one has beeninfluenced by led zepl On three.
Yeah, but this isn't about influencedabout what you which is why I listed
off all the other things. Ilove both albums equally. Both of them
had an influence on me to followthe artist either way, you know,
So I started looking at outside factors. Yeah, you know, And again

I'm not saying that's right. I'mjust saying that's how That's the only way
I could make decision or and itwould have just been me being like,
I'm not trying to be funny,but I'm not making a decision, you
know, And you would have beenlike, no, but you have to
it. I'd have been like,okay, well buy like you know.
So that's my thoughts on it,you know, and there may be who
knows, we may the Facebook commentspeople might be like, you know,
no bloods up the four is justa better record, or Purple Rain is

just a better record. You know. I truly don't know how this is
going to go. We'll be puttingup a Twitter pole again. This is

was shocked how much I liked Iled Zepplin four. But it definitely to
me is not for you. It'sto me for just wears on me faster

than purple raindos. Just because there'sthe lack of variety that is on I
feel like for you guys, andI'm not being funny when I say this,
I feel like for you guys,like Stairway is probably in the minus
absolutely because both of you very muchlike a three four minute like in and
out rocker pop song, and Ifeel like about the time Stairway hits the
like both of you might be like, is this why is this still happening?

This is this is weird to say, but I feel like Stairway is
very overplayed for me. Did youknow stairways the most play time industry?

then it knocked out Pearl jam Ten, so holy Cow, Purple Rain.
Yeah, Purple Rain is like,I mean, it's an amazing record,

a Cinderella story, Holy Cow,Like you know what I mean to beat

all of my love of Prince startedthe first time I heard Purple Rain and

rock album and an R and Balbum, and it's got ballads and it's

here's for me, the deciding factorbetween the two, these two records specifically
is influence. LEDs Upland four haslaunched a billion guitar players. There's jokes
about don't walk into a guitar storeand play Stairway to Heaven because that's the
first thing every guitar player learns toplay, a Stairway to Heaven. Yeah,

very overplayed for me. Did youknow stairways the most play time industry?

I also just think that Purple Rainin general is a more polished project
than four, oh for sure,and four is not supposed to be polished.
I guess it's supposed to sound rawand edgy like it does well.
But it's also their fourth time outof the gate, like it's it's time
to get a little more polished,you can you. I think you could
definitely say that for one and two. Yeah, I think actually I would
make the argument three is more polishedthan four. So they probably took a

I think there's more variety, andfour has just gotten so played out
because I've heard the big smash songsoff of that record over and over and
over and over again, and kindof the same with Prince as far as
like hearing it over and over again, but I just hear it less often.
Yes, Yeah, my parents arevery much listen to classic rock like
ninety four seven, which is likea local Detroit station. Every time I

hear and he leads up on song, I'm just like, it's like,
what my It's just what we grewup listening to. Garanty to hear Black
Dog like every like half hour.Well but again, you know, to
bring it into my wheelhouse though thatthat's because million people. I think that
that has a lot to do withit. Like, I really liked the
album when I sat down and listenedto it, and I was actually shocked.

But like for me, I wasI did not grow up with a
Prince influence and I came on toit later in life, and so like,
this is very much my favorite albumover the two. Right, I
find that radio has Radio makes medislike things a lot, Yeah, because
of how frequently the songs are played, and I think that that is maybe
what happened with four is it hurtso many kinds. It's definitely the Zeppelin

record that you hear the most fromradio. There's other albums they have where
like like Physical Graffiti is a doubleLP set and the only song you ever
hear on the radios Cashmere, butyou hear is constantly, right you know
