(00:03):
Here we are Bonus episode six, moving right along in the tournament. We
are getting close to the end ofthe first bracket here, so this things
are about to ramp up. Inmy opinion, I am Russ along with
me for the ride as always asKYL and Michelle. Are you guys ready
for this one? Sweet? Sweet? Oh? Pumped even cool? So

(00:23):
for those of you who have beenalong for this so far, you know
the deal. This is just forfun KYL and I picked eight albums that
we liked. They're going up againsteach other. Every week we present a
case for them, Michelle decides whichalbum moves on, and then we'll circle
back to him later in the tournament. Last week we had The Weekend's debut
album, The Trilogy, up againstPearl Jam's debut album Ten, two monster

(00:44):
records by anyone standard except for Michelle, who gave both records a stunning five
out of ten, but Pearl Jamwas able to eke out the victory and
move on. Side note, Isaw the other day that someone wished you
a happy birthday on your Facebook pageand it said I hope your day was
a solid five out of ten, which I thought was amazing. Yeah,
yeah, so moving right along. This week's matchup is a album from twenty

(01:04):
nineteen, Dermott Kennedy with his albumWithout Fear versus an album from nineteen sixty
six to Beach Boys Pet Sounds. So this is, in my opinion,
about the point where the tournament isgetting serious. And this week, next
week and the week after are thefinal rounds of this first part, and
this is getting serious. So Kyle, why don't you kick things off as

(01:25):
usual and talk to us about DermottKennedy Without Fear. We always talk about
debut records from people that are absolutelyfantastic, and this is yet another one
of them. This is his firstofficial major release. He did do it
like a mixtape or something beforehand, and I feel like maybe a lot of
people don't even know who he isoverall. He's maybe not all that popular,

(01:48):
but when it comes to this record, it is absolutely fantastic. And
I much like all of the thingsthat I put on here, I could
pretty much listen to it straight throughand it kind of carries you almost like
an emotional roller coaster kind of way. The way the production has done is
it's just it's awesome. Yeah,I will say that I didn't make that
as a note, but you're absolutelyright the production and it was fantastic.

(02:12):
Yeah. And I originally found outabout this guy because his mixtape was produced
by Mike Dean. And I don'tknow if you, I assume that some
of you listening to know who MikeDean is, but he's a huge,
huge, legendary music producer. Andit was just called Mike Dean Presents Dermot
Kennedy and I was like, Okay, well, if he's co signing him,
then I'm going to give it alisten. And I thought it was
great. And then this came outand I was like, holy shit,

(02:34):
this is great as well. AndI, like I said, I could
listen to the entire thing all theway through. There are I want to
say, there is a song onthe radio of his which was like his
first single that came off of that, which should be power over Me.
Yeah. Power over Me is thesong that you and everybody else probably have
heard on the radio at some point. I haven't heard it on the radio
yet, but that was one ofthree that I picked out that were standout

(02:58):
tracks for me. So and I'mI'm really awful with song names in general
for everything, So like I whenI listened to this album, I usually
just listened to all the way through, and then I get mixed up as
to which songs which and so onand so forth, and but overall,
great record. Like I said,it's his first record. I'm excited to
see what he has up as sleevecoming out next right. It's my goal

(03:23):
to hit that every single time someoneothers that phrase. So I was a
little bit. I was a littlebit behind on that, but it's my
goal to hit that drop every singletime someone uses that phrase. So okay,
I had never heard Dermott Kennedy priorto this. Now I'm sorry.
I had heard Power Over Me becauseit was on a playlist that I think
you added it to our playlist Michelleat some point, and so I had
heard that song, but I didn'tknow that it was a single or anything

(03:45):
along those lines. So my firstthought when listening to the record was neither
of these are bad. Points reallyreminded me of David Gray and later Mumford
not and I want to be clear, not early Mumford less Banjoe, more
atmospheric sounds, but much better productionin my opinion. In the later Mumford

(04:08):
material, and that's what this recordreminded me of. I thought the opening
track was fantastic. The other standouttracks for me were The Corner. I
liked Outgrown a lot, and ofcourse I liked Power Over Me a lot.
But here is my negative point forthis record. I listened to this
front to back five times, andall five times that I did, I

(04:30):
found myself, which is in thoseof you who know me, this was
very rare for me. I foundmyself like three or four songs later.
I would be like, damn it, I wasn't paying attention, which is
very weird for me. Like I'mthe guy who is like listening to every
you ride hit and every baseline changeand you know, every little production thing.
And for some reason, and Itried to listen to this record five

(04:50):
times over the course of a week, and every single time I kept going,
oh God, damn it, Igotta go back. I wasn't paying
attention to those you know, lasttwo songs or last three songs. And
I don't think you're right. You'reright about that. I agree, and
I do that a lot with allkinds of music, so it's normal for
me. But yeah, I agreewith you. Now I will I'm gonna
put myself on blast here and sayit could be user error, like for

(05:13):
example, a couple episodes ago whenI completely lost my mind on Michelle for
doing the same thing with the darkside of the moon, Like I was
just stunned and amazed that she couldhave the nerve to do that with the
dark side of the moon. AndI absolutely was convinced and remain convinced that
that was user error as far aslistening to the dark side of the moon.

(05:33):
So it very well could be thecase. But at the risk of
sounding pretentious, I'm not known forthat, Like I'm known for being able
to lock in and pay attention. So I want to say it's not user
but you know, I'm willing tofloat that idea out there. But the
biggest compliment that I can give therecord, and I think you guys know

(05:55):
me well enough, Michelle and Kyle, and I hope the listeners know me
well enough by now to know that. And I say, oh, this
sounds like this. It's almost nevermet in a drugatory fashion, and it
certainly isn't. Here. When Isay this sounds like David Gray, I
mean as a as a compliment andI'll tell you, I sure as hell
mean it as a compliment when Isay it sounds like later Mumford, because
for me, Mumford doesn't even starttill the third record, and I love

(06:16):
the last the last two. Soyeah, I agree with you. I
definitely do hear David Gray and Mumfordin the best way, in the best
way. Yeah. So wait, wait, wait, wait, Mumford doesn't
start to the first third record.Yeah, I mean I own all four,
but the first two are hot garbagecompared to the last two. Okay,
we're offline, Yeah, absolutely,no problem of the online we have.

(06:36):
We'll live a half mile away.I could meet you in the middle.
We can fight. Let's fight inthe street. Yeah, let's do
it. You know. One weirdthing I didn't notice about this album is
that like, so, he's Irishand he sounds Irish when he's singing,
which is rare. I feel likemost singers when they're saying English, they
sound like they're American on most so, but here you can really tell it
in some points where he like hisIrish accent like really comes out in the

(07:00):
music itself. Oh for sure. When I was like six, seven,
eight years old, I was like, I would hear boy George or George
Michael speak on the Grammys or whatever, and I would be like, wait,
what you know because he is sayingwith such a strong American accent,
and then they'd get up and accepttheir reward and I'd be like, you're
not even American, like you likeShokuta And yeah, when you listen to
this record, there is no questionwhere Durmott Kennedy is from. That blows

(07:25):
my mind that actors and musicians cando that to where they just sound like
completely different from where they're from.Yeah, well, and I think find
out I would they signed up.The best person I've ever seen do that
is Hugh Laurie. Yeah, yeah, what I was gonna say, as
far as music goes, the bestperson I've ever seen doing is John Ozzy
Osbourne, who can barely speak Englishwith any accent. I have I have

(07:47):
AZZI live records where he's like andthen they get into the song, He's
like crazy, but that's how itgoes, and you're like, what what
So you know how it's supposed tosound, You just don't. Yeah,
you just choose. Now to Kyle, do you have any closing comments on
that. Like I say, asfar as Termount Kennedy goes, the biggest

(08:07):
detractor for me was that I zonedout several times, which is very unusual
for me. But there was therewas a lot of positive there too.
Closing, it's it's hard for meto really explain. People just need to
listen to the album, or listento if you want to start with Power
Over Me, that's the single thatwas out or is out whatever is.
You can start with that and thenlisten to the whole album, um and

(08:30):
then yeah, you form your opinionoff that. Right on slide it on
back from twenty nineteen all of theway back to nineteen sixty six. We're
going to talk about the Beach Boysseminal record Pet Sounds, which is just
a gigantic part of music history, and none of that really comes into this
battle. But it's one of thoserecords in my opinion, that when you
listen to it, it lives upto the hype. You can listen to

(08:52):
Pet Sounds one time and go,oh, I totally get why this is
such a big deal. Why theBeatles wanted to live up to it,
Why Pink Floyd was inspired by it, why fifty years later, we're still
going Holy cow, Brian, like, really all of that out of your
head, you know. I thinkWouldn't It Be Nice is up there with

(09:13):
some of the most amazing openers inthe history of music. I would put
it up against teen Spirit or Jungleor any of the other songs we've talked
about ambitions as a writer, Iwould put it solidly up against those.
And the reason why is because thesong totally sets you up for what you're
going to hear all throughout Pet Sounds. The lyrics are amazing, the harmonies
are insane. The Wrecking Crew, for those of you who don't know everybody

(09:35):
should know, but that's the studioband who's playing behind the Beach Boys in
on the Pet Sounds record, andpretty much every other song you ever have
loved from the sixties is the WreckingCrew. They're absolutely on fire through the
track that leads into You Still BelieveIn Me, which might mean my single
favorite recorded song of all time byanyone. It's such an amazing, amazing

(09:56):
cut. It takes everything that Wouldn'tIt Be Nice does and elevates it to
the next level, which is whattrack two should do on a record.
So it does its job. Imean, I could go on about each
of these songs forever. That's NotMe is an amazing upbeat number, and
if you look at the lyrics,it's telling the story of exactly what's going

(10:18):
on in Brian's mind, which hewas slowly losing at the time, and
it's amazing that he was able toput that down in addition to coming up
with these monster harmonies and melodies andwhatnot. I'm Waiting for the Day as
another one that's just like these crushing, heartbreaking lyrics that set to this like
really big. I mean the songstarts out with this like big Timpani and

(10:39):
you know, really gets into ahuge upbeat swing and then the lyrics are
just crushing heartbreak. The Sloop JohnB is the big one that people debate
on the record. Brian Wilson didn'teven want it on the album. It's
the only song that he didn't havea hand in writing. Since it's a
cover. I like it a lot. But yeah, the Slop John B
is a cover and Ran did notwant it on the record, but it

(11:01):
is there and I like it alot. The detractors, the people that
don't like the song, don't likeit because Pet Sounds isn't exactly a concept
record, but it very much isinasmuch as the lyrics are connected between the
morning for love that Brian had andnot wanting to lose himself in what he
was doing, and the sloop.John b just has nothing to do with

(11:22):
that whatsoever. I mean, getobviously it was written by someone else about
you know, voting with your uncle, so has nothing to do with it.
But the Beach Boys spin that's puton it is perfect and again the
wrecking crew brings all of the thunderto it. God only knows. I
will leave you with this the onlything I could say a thousand things about
God only knows it. Instead,I'll tell you this. Paul McCartney said,
it's the greatest song ever written. So when you have a beatle,

(11:46):
and not only a beatle, butone half of Lennon McCartney telling you it's
the greatest song ever written, thatprobably yeah, that probably speaks for itself.
Side note, there's a Pet Soundslive album and right before they do
God only knows, Brian Wilson dropsthe double whammy with uh this next song.
My friend Paul McCartney told me itwas the greatest song I've ever written.
I'm like, well, first ofall, you had to say my

(12:07):
friend Paul McCartney first of all,and then second of all you had to
throw that out there, you know, and then you got the triple shot
of I know there's an answer heretoday and I just wasn't made for these
times again. If you listen tothese layers, you hear the aching heart
and mind of Brian Wilson behind theseinsane harmonies and melodies and just I can't
it's to this day this record ishard for me to wrap my head around.

(12:31):
And it's fifty years old and beenpraised by everybody. Pat sounds the
title cut is just a fun instrumentalm I don't look into it too deeply
myself. Fun fact about Caroline Knowthat the track that closes out the record,
you would I could give you aten guesses as to what the lead
single is off of this record, and you would never guess Caroline Know that
was the lead single off off ofthis record. Yeah, So it's what

(12:54):
the It's what the record label chose. They wanted to ease fans away from
in My Room and Surfing USA andSurfer Girl into what they were going to
be doing on this record. Sowhat's ironic for me is I would never
have chosen it for the lead single. But it's a fantastic closer to the
record, Like it really winds downeverything and it doesn't delve into anywhere near

(13:20):
as deep of thought process that allof the other lyrics of the record do.
So for me, it's a greatwine down inasmuch as wouldn't it be
nice as a great You drop thatneedle and it boom, you're off and
running. So it's as good ofa closer as wouldn't it be nice as
an opener. So that is myvery truncated thoughts on the Beach Boys Pet

(13:41):
Sounds. If we were going tomake these bonus episodes four hours long,
I could probably include my entire notes. But that's everything that I had kylege
spend some time listening to it,and if so, did you have some
thoughts? I did? And somy one major grape above this album,
and I'm probably going to get myeyes virtually bludgeon for the is it's it's
too despite the said this is involvedin the record, it is too upbeat

(14:05):
and jingly to me, like it'searlier I compared it to um Farrell's Happy
whatever the hell the song he didfor the Minions movie. Alright, I
was, I was with you tillthat part, but go on, I
wasn't. I wasn't going to attackyou till that comparison, But go on,
I will. I will hear therest of the art. Guy,
Let's put it that way. Notthat it sounds like it, but that

(14:28):
song, that Frell's song annoys meto the point where because it's just too
upbeat and too like and I feellike every like, every couple of songs
is like that on this album,and I don't I don't know, I
don't like to. I guess Iprefer an album that's kind of like back
and forth and up and down emotionally, and though is lyrically sad, it's
so upbeat that like, it's hardfor me to want to listen to all

(14:48):
the time. And with that beingsaid, I completely understand it's importance in
in music and Brian Wilson being agenius in the whole nine yards and watching
the movie about him made me appreciatethe Yeah, I appreciate him and that
whole situation even more. But likefor me, it wouldn't be a record
that I would go and say justrandomly pick out of something versus something else.

(15:13):
Let's see here, we've had acase presented for both records, which
means that now we're onto Michelle's notes, We're not going to get the rating
just yet, which is I've becomefearful of every week. We'll get the
ratings after we get the decision. But Michelle, share with us your notes
on Dremot Kennedy's Without Fear. Allright, this album I have listened to

(15:35):
before, and I listened to regularly. I do enjoy it. I do
think it has an amazing first track, an evening I will not forget,
and it just every single So Ihad the exact opposite problem of you Rus.
I was like listening to it becauseI've listened to it so many times,
and I was like, I justwant to refresh myself on this record,
and I kept being like, whatsong is this and it would be
like one song later and I waslike that that's a jam. That's a

(15:56):
jam. That's a jam. Iliterally went stopped halfway through and I was
like, I'm pretty sure I likeall these songs, Like I couldn't like
there was no point in the recordwhere I was like I would have skipped
any of the songs, which israre for me. I think Moments Pass
is probably my favorite song on therecord. But like I said, there
was not one song that I dislikedon the entire record. Um, I

(16:18):
do like just the overall vibe. The overall vibe of the record is it's
just it's right up my alley. If anybody knows me, it's I completely
agree. It's David Gray, Momfordand Son's mash up later records start a
thing, and I just love thisrecord. So there's I don't have anything
bad to say about him. Cool. I think I could be wrong,
but pat might be the first recordin the tournament so far that you didn't

(16:41):
have something bad to say about. So yeah, I'm gonna guess you have
plenty bad to say about Pet Soundsjust from knowing you. So let's move
on to pet Sounds. That's nottrue. Before you continue, I will
say that when I first tried toget Michelle to listen to this album or
listen to Dermot Kenney's album, shewas not having it. Eventually, she
h she started listening to it,grew on her, but she didn't.

(17:03):
I don't like being told what todo. That's true, so pet sounds.
I've listened to this record before, and I really like the Beach Boys.
This is not I really do likethis record. I agree with you
Russ, that wouldn't it be nice? It's just a bomb first track.
It's it's up there with one ofthe best first tracks that we've had on
any record, this whole competition.Even though it slows down after that,
I feel like there was a niceflow to the record. Sloop John Me

(17:26):
is also my favorite song on therecord, and I did not know it
was a cover. Let's Go Awayfor a While? Has this weird little
outtro I think it was that song. That's what I wrote down at the
It's like in the middle of thealbum, so like, I feel like
that didn't fit. But other thanthat, I didn't have any There was
no stinkers on this album for meand Brian Wilson's going to be excited.

(17:48):
I actually listened to this record andI'm so I'm gonna ask you this rust
does it matter? I listened toit at the remastered version, and then
I listened to it again the monoversion, Like am I through my computer
speakers? Am I listening to anythingdifferent? A setup like that, you're
not going to hear any difference. And if you ask the next one hundred
people quote unquote Pet Sounds experts aboutmono versus stereo with this particular record,

(18:11):
you were going to get one hundreddifferent answers. So yeah, not what
I was expecting anything different. Iwas just like, well, I'm listening
to it again, so I mightas well pick a different one. And
I didn't notice anything different, ifit matters at all. It was originally
recorded in mono, okay, Sothe only one I didn't actually get on
the record, which is the titletrack, not that there's anything to get
like. I didn't dislike it.I was just like, I guess that
maybe i'd never heard it before,Like maybe it's always been there but I

(18:33):
never heard it. But I guessI probably also have a better understanding after
watching Love in Mercy, so yeah, which helps a lot. I understand
a lot more. But I reallyenjoyed the record. Oh I forget.
The biggest plus for pet Sounds,Mike Love doesn't like it. Mike Love's
an idiot, So I've heard thatI have a question though, So just

(18:56):
real quick, I want to pointout one more thing about Mike Love being
an idiot. We talked about thePMRC a couple of main episodes back,
and they got a ton of theirfunding from Mike Love. That's how big
of an idiot Mike Love is.So the one, the one person who
helped fund the PMRC doesn't like petsons. So just throwing that in there.

(19:17):
You had a question for me,Yeah, well so, I don't
know. On Spotify it's his originalmono and stereo mixed versions, and then
in the middle there's a song calledI didn't listen to it hang on to
Your Ego. That's a that's theoriginal lyrics of Um, I know there's
an answer, it's just a Ican listen to it. Yeah, it's
just a demo if I know there'san answer. When it was called hang

(19:38):
Onto Your Ego, it was justlike a bonus track when they rereleased or
Yeah, the record has been rereleasedand I want to understate this about eleventy
billion times. I can only imagineit's been up for a billion years.
Yeah, I mean, the wholeI could derailist easily, but the whole
project was originally going to be therewas a follow up record that was going

(19:59):
to be called Smile that A lotof the like um good vibrations came out
of those sound sessions and so on, and the record has just been beat
to death as far as reissues andremasters and oh we found thirteen more seconds
of this track, you know,so as you might expect with such a
seminal record like for you know,I'm not saying it's right, but the

(20:21):
record label's gonna beat it for allit's worth, you know. Yeah,
I really enjoyed it. I theBeach Boys. I don't know which one
it was, but it was oneof the first cassette tapes I ever owned
when I was a kid. Itwas probably just a hand me down,
hand it to me, but Iremember wearing that out in the car.
So they're right up my alley. So I really liked both records this week.
So it's it's it's definitely a toughone. Yeah, this week is

(20:44):
tough, and going forward is ridiculous. So all right, do you have
a ruling ready for us? Ido, sweet, All right, give
us one second. We're gonna takea quick break and we will come back
for the ruling and the chits andthe chat and the chin wagon and so
on. So we'll be back injust a second. Hey man, ask

(21:11):
me Kevin Smith. Everybody knows atthe root of any good relationship, any
relationship worth anything, is the onlything that matters between two people. And
I'm talking about television. That's right. That's why you should listen to Married
with Television Man, which is apodcast by my friends Shannon and Jamie.
I call it kattis about movies andTV that they have loved for decades.

(21:33):
Man. You listen at Married withtv dot com or anywhere you get your
podcasts. They are proud members ofthe Oddpods media network Man, Married with
Television. Hi, I'm Tina howDemo and I'm Hilary Dougherty and we host
the Muck podcast where we discussed thedark and sometimes we are true stories in
American politics. E Tina, didyou know that Elvis crashed the Nixon White

(21:56):
House for the sole purpose of gettinga DA badge and it worked? Or
how a gun control advocates senator outof California engaged in gun trafficking with notorious
gang leader shrimp Boy. That boyI remember him? Okay, so you
know, we cover all of thatand more from Malady's Madness, mischief,
and murder in US politics, andwe also host a bi weekly interview segment

(22:19):
called Little Muck. We interview politicians, journalists, activists, and others who
share their experiences in politics. FindThe Muck Podcast wherever you listen to podcasts,
and check us out on social mediaat the Muck Podcast. And we
are back. We are into thesecond half of episode six. So we

(22:44):
have Dermott Kennedy's twenty nineteen album WithoutFear up against the Beach Boys nineteen sixty
six album Pet Sounds. Kyle andI both made our cases for it earlier
in the episode, and I believeMichelle has a final ruling. Ready,
do you, Michelle? I do? She does, And here it comes.

(23:06):
Which album was moving on? It'sDermott Kennedy. Wow, but buy
a hair So SOT and I justwant to be clear about this. You're
telling me that this guy in twentynineteen made a record that sounds like David
Gray and Mumford and Sons, andsomehow it's better than one of the most
influential records of all time. I'mnot being I'm asked to you. Okay,

(23:30):
I just wanted to ask, andI know that that's going to make
people upset, and I appreciate PetSounds gonna have its place, but if
I'm going to put on a recordbetween Pet Sounds and Dermott Kennedy, it's
gonna be return Dermot Kennedy. Wow, all right. I don't really have
any other reaction for you. Itwas I gave it. So Pet Sounds
got a seven out of ten andj Dermot Kennedy got it out of ten,

(23:53):
while we've moved past five out often. So we're getting it somewhere
now on this planet or any other. Is Pet Sounds a seven out of
ten? Like? Like you,I just want to be clear. You
realize this record is responsible for SergeantPepper in the Dark Side of the Moment,
like directly responsible for those two recordshappening. Yeah, but we're not

(24:14):
talking about that. And so we'retalking you know you are. You're talking
about the quality of Pet Sounds andyou're saying it's a seven out of ten.
So when when John and Paul heardit and they were blown away and
they decided to make Sergeant Pepper, they're just they're just wrong. Like it
wasn't as good as they thought itwas. No, it might have been
a ten out attend to them.I'm not saying how how Yeah, everyone
else listens to a record. I'mtelling you and I how I listened to

(24:34):
it? Ah? I see,Okay, Well all right, that is
the way it breaks down. Wegotta go about it that way. So,
as I've been saying, we aregoing to get this gets more difficult
as the weeks go on. Thenext week, UM, I do not
envy you even a little bit withthe matchup that's happening next week. Next

(24:56):
week is nineteen seventy seven's Rumors LPby Fleetwood Mac, and it's going up
against a little known record called Musicfrom the Motion Picture of Purple Rain,
which was recorded by Prince and theRevolution in nineteen eighty four. So that
is I mean, it's two recordsthat are just monster monster monster records.
So dare I say that both ofthose records are going to get an eight

(25:19):
or above? But then again, what do I know? I listened to
shitty music like pet Sounds, Sohow how would I know? No?
I like pet Sounds and there areno stinkers? How does no stinkers equate
to a seven. How do youget to a seven if you don't have
any stinkers? Would you? Wouldone not require stinkers to be brought down
from a ten to a seven?Help me help you, help me help

(25:44):
the amount of three things that aregoing to help me help me? No,
