Sk8 + friends = Infinite Minute! Adapting the movie-by-minute podcast genre to anime-by-minute, Jonathon Lawrence and Caitlin Mathieson attempt to rewatch the Winter 2021 anime 'Sk8 the Infinity' minute by minute! They'll analyse, scrutinise, and get sidetracked watching an anime they both really enjoyed the first time round, but will they discover more on an infinite rewatch?
We’re watching the kind-of-fourth segment, or the one that’s sprinkled throughout the Extra Part, “GANBARE, HIROMI CHAN” and the ED!! But before we do that, friend of the show Mitchell’s got car troubles! There’s a cute chibi version of Hiromi and Tadashi, Jono went to Japan WE GET IT, and Hiromi is doing his best as he has to confront the guy who literally attacked him!
It’s the Adam and Tadashi part of the BL - Morning Routine! It’s a stylistic shift for the show (avant garde much?) and we love it! Adam’s body clock is well-tuned, Tadashi is sleepy and charging his phone, and Utsumi is down BAD. Money can buy you a lot of things, including TV Windows!
It’s weird when we don’t say “this minute” on Infinite Minute! We’re watching part two of the Sk8 OVA, “Becoming Really Serious About Things”. These boys are dumb, this cannot be the way they actually discovered skateboarding, but it’s so much FUN that we’re out of time and so much stuff is referenced WE LOVE THESE CHARACTERS WHERE IS SEASON 2??!! Also yeah we talk about the beep test 💁
Caity and Jono are so back! We’re talking about the first part of the Extra Part of the Sk8 OVA! Karuta is played, Chihayafuru is recommended, neither of our dads were businessmen, and minds are melted as we realise we’ve probably got the format wrong for reviewing 10 minutes of anime. We’re so back!
We’re baaaaack, but are you, dear listener?? We’re watching the OVA trailer and loving it! We’re hype, there’s zero skateboarding, and we’re travelling through time (both in the trailer and in the sense that we’re so behind the times releasing this episode now!)
A final little bonus ‘Infinite Minute’! This was some of the stuff that I had to cut for context/coughing, funny little bloopers, or moments that I would send to Caity while I was editing that made us both laugh. Enjoy, or don’t! - Jono
We finished ‘Infinite Minute’! We have finally completed "Sk8 the Infinity" minute by minute, our long journey has come to a close, the dub gets one final chance to redeem themselves and they kinda blow it, we’re getting our tennis players and hurdlers confused, and Jono has STATS.
Thank you for joining us on this MASSIVE undertaking, whether you’ve been with us since the start, or have joined us long after the journey was...
Classic church and steeple bit on ‘Infinite Minute’! Holy god it is the final full minute of the show and we’re not sure what to do with ourselves, the boys got closure because the pup said kay and the dog said hai and we’re not calling this episode Tadushy, we don’t know where anyone is, the whole show is bookended beautifully, and good work, guitarists!
The political subplot is the centrepiece of ‘Infinite Minute’! This podcast has been our early thirties, Kaoru “caligraphies” on Joe’s face, Miya gets a cute send off (care of the Chill Out comics), POV you’re standing on Kiriko’s desk as she gets shipped off to Tokyo, the superintendent has a funny voice, and Mitch teaches us about Meguca and asks us what our favourite, low-budget moments are in anime!
It’s Mitchell again on ‘Infinite Minute’! We’re served up with a jam-packed ED montage, Mitchell can’t remember every character from this show because he hasn’t watched it in three years, we’re STILL talking about Challengers (2024), the green hoody is canon, and Jono sounds extremely out of touch talking about a meme no-one understands
SHADOKA APPEARS on ‘Infinite Minute’! We finally see a long-awaited ship moment, we feel more for Tadashi and Ainosuke than the Renga hug, Shadow is the best and Cherry is the worst? and “if the hug doesn‘t get me the puppy play will” will be etched into Jono’s tombstone.
We don’t know what we’re watching anymore on ‘Infinite Minute’! We’re banking our finale eps, we are in a volunteer environment and should be a registered charity, the beef finally finishes, the fence is giving cemetery, Vale is cooking onion and potato galette because Caity hates vegies on the side and we’re all tangented out because we’re talking about THE PERFECT TEXTURE FOR VEGETABLES ps sorry we’re so cold on the hug renga fan...
What are they gonna change fun to in the dub on ‘Infinite Minute’! We’re taking it one word at a time as Adam does not have any fun, the whole peanut gallery has their say, are you the kind of person who gets scared pouring milk on your cereal,” why does God force me to work” we scream to the heavens as we contemplate the meaning of life, and yeah that’s about where we are after 281 episodes of this podcast soz fam.
Chicago (2002) did win the 2003 Academy Award for Best Picture on ‘Infinite Minute’! But Challengers (2024) is all we’re talking about! Are you team Patrick or Art? What do you think the ending means? How good is that score?! By the time I’m editing this episode it’s already off the TL but we had JUST WATCHED IT OK
Count the rotations of the fall on ‘Infinite Minute’! And what a minute (sarcastic), as the boys spend a lot of time on the ground, Langa is spinning on the X axis while Adam is on the Y, and then everyone wills them to stand up, and hey I just summarised the minute so you don’t have to!
Boards collide on ‘Infinite Minute’! Is this the most anime minute of this show and by extension this anime-by-minute podcast? Yes. There are special moves, there is flying (on ropes), there is an unpacking of the overall themes of the show, and Aiichiro is chonkyyy!
Dub is STILL not mentioning fun on ‘Infinite Minute’! Adam is screaming for his boi, we wish for an Italian Christmas with pannetone and pandoro, we can’t stop shouting out Pidapipo ice cream shop, and Langa is skateboarding down a mountain?? Also someone is building a BBQ in the background.
We are having fun, my son, and the tissues are out on ‘Infinite Minute’! It’s one of the best minutes of the show, which brings together so much of the style, story, music, and heart, basically giving us the best the show has to offer, along with a little weird animation, of course!
Make another wish on ‘Infinite Minute’! We’re crying, our breath has been taken away, the use of silence is 👌👌, we’re talking about the eclipse from what a month ago?, the dub finally has to accept (again) that fun is an integral part of the plot, and where’d this rickety-ass bridge come from?
Clicks for Caity on a fantastic segue into ‘Infinite Minute’! We are in the zone, we get chatting about flavours and taste zones, Adam puts Langa in a cage with his FING, Reki is surprised at the size of Langa’s dumpy, Cherry is bitter/salty about not having been in the zone, and apologies international listeners as we get deep into an anime adaptation of a classic Aussie play about Aussie Rules Football.
