Michelle Dowker (00:00):
Does your Work Spark Joy?
This was a question that I hadto ask myself and in today's
podcast episode, I am recountingthe questions that I had to ask
myself, the things that I hadto consider, the decisions that
I had to make and theperspectives that I had to shift
in order to make the changes sothat my work could spark joy.

(00:24):
And I hope that through thisdiscussion if your work doesn't
spark joy that you'll get somehelpful insights and ideas that
you can ask yourself and choicesthat you can make so that you
can find more joy in the workthat you're doing.
As you know from my story, I'vemade lots of different shifts

(00:47):
and pivots to my niche and myfocus and my audience and my
clientele, and a reallyimportant question I had to
answer was is my work stillsparking joy?
If you were like me, you've gotthe business strategy sorted,
you know what you're doing, you're really good at it, but
your work isn't sparking joylike it used to.

(01:09):
So this is a really importantpart of the equation when you're
looking at your businesssuccess.
It's not just about thebusiness strategy, it's not just
about the financial success.
There needs to be a part of thewhole bigger picture where what
you are doing is sparking joy, that you feel fulfilled, that
you feel satisfied, that youfeel excited about what you're

(01:31):
doing.
If you've listened to I believeit was episode two in season one
I explained the unfolding ofeach of the different business
pivots along my career path.
One thing that I want to speakto a little bit more deeply
today was how I discovered whatwas not sparking me joy anymore

(01:54):
and what I did about it.
One of the things was that Iwas noticing that I was often
finding myself repeating topicsover and over again that were
starting to feel increasinglymundane.
It was feeling like maybe I wastalking more about the beginner
level work and through my owninner healing journey, through

(02:17):
my own chronic illness journeyand my spiritual inner awakening
journey, I moved past thosestages.
Now, there's nothing wrong withthose stages.
Every single stage along thepath is important and necessary,
including the beginning andstarting stages, and there's
definitely a market for it.
People need it.
They need to be introduced tonew concepts, like making

(02:39):
dietary changes, like when theystart to discover how to do
inner healing work, when theystart to discover how to do
trauma healing.
All of these things areabsolutely important and there's
a market for the beginner level.
Who's an entry level and juststepping into this world.
People need it.

(03:00):
However, this work was nolonger jazzing me up like it
used to, so I'll use a specificexample for you to help you
understand.
With nutrition, when I startedas a naturopathic doctor, I
guided a lot of people throughhow to try an elimination diet
for the very first time andeverything involved with how to

(03:23):
actually go through the processand find strategy in it, and
there was a lot of explanationof what's gluten.
Where do you find it?
What ingredients are you goingto be looking for when you're
looking at ingredients lists ofpackages?
What foods are actually dairyand what foods aren't?
Where do you find sugar?
How much sugar is in your foodand how do you calculate that?

(03:47):
These were things that I did alot in the beginning years of my
clinical practice, and thesewere important to me because 20
years ago, I had my own epiphanywith nutrition, after having
struggled with chronic sinusinfections and migraines and
chronic fatigue and brain fogthat prevented me from

(04:10):
continuing on with my universitystudies.
After I completed my mastersand when I was introduced to
doing an elimination of dairyand gluten in my diet.
All of a sudden, all of thosesymptoms went away within a
matter of days and they didn'tcome back, and that was
revolutionary for me and I wasreally excited and motivated to

(04:34):
help others to discover the samefor themselves.
It really excited me to watchhow their symptoms improved once
they made the changes that Isuggested to them.
However, after several years ofnavigating more complicated
therapeutic diets and my ownjourney of deeper inner healing
and personal development and thefoundational nutritional

(04:57):
guidance no longer excited melike it used to.
I started noticing thisespecially once I discovered the
autoimmune paleo for myautoimmune conditions and then
went a step even further and didthe carnivore diet.
These are highly restrictivetherapeutic diets.
They're not for everybody.

(05:17):
They did give me my life backwhen nothing else at the time
worked.
Once I went through this veryintense journey with my own diet
, that was the first sign that Isaw that teaching people at the
very beginning of their dietaryjourney.
It just felt too far off whereI had been, where I was 20 years

(05:41):
later, and that was the firstsign.
And then, as I was doing thisdeeper inner healing work for
myself, I could see that thisdeeper inner emotional landscape
was a bigger contributor towhat's really going on under the
surface than gluten or sugar oreven AIP or carnivore.
Now, the thing is is dietarychoices are absolutely important

(06:04):
and they are to be addressedfirst and foremost, but what I
find is that it only takespeople so far if these deeper
things are not addressed.
And I could see how working onmindset, energy and identity
were areas that I was becomingmore and more excited about,
because I was doing the workmyself and seeing the results

(06:26):
that came from that, and as Iincorporated more of that into
my coaching work, I could seehow much further my clients were
going.
Not only were they overcomingbig chronic health issues, often
even going into remission, butthey would tell me time and time
again how they finally feelempowered, liberated and whole.

(06:47):
These clients finally becametheir own best friend, they
would tell me.
They felt free to be who theytruly are, without fear, worry
or guilt.
They finally felt complete, andthese are the reasons why their
physical symptoms improved somuch.
Beyond the diet, beyond thelifestyle, beyond herbs, beyond

(07:08):
anything else, and this is thework that I became increasingly
excited about, and as I wasdialing this level of awareness
in for myself, I was alsomastering my intuitive and
psychic skills more and more, and as I did and as I developed
the confidence to use theseskills with my clients, I was

(07:31):
blowing their minds more andmore.
The insight and transformationthat they were achieving was
beyond anything I'd seen when Iworked in clinical practice, and
so I had to make some bigdecisions.
I couldn't do it all and Icouldn't work with everybody at
every stage and level, because, first, my soul wouldn't let me.

(07:52):
I knew from the depth of myinner, knowing that I had to
move on from the foundationalnutritional and natural health
work that I used to do, theentry level work.
My approach and my methodologywas shifting, and in order for
me to move fully into what trulysparks joy for me, I had to
move away from what no longerdid, and I had to let go of the

(08:16):
things that I no longer wantedto do.
That started with giving myselfpermission to do so without
feeling guilty, because a clientheld that I was skilled to
leave after.
My own experience and innerevolution needed me to be there
for them fully, and if I triedto offer the services for

(08:39):
everyone instead of focusingdown on who I'm truly here to
serve, the results anyone wouldreceive would be diluted, and
forcing myself to do work thatI'm not completely lit up about
actually reduces the level ofimpact the client receives, and
that's not fair to any of us.

(08:59):
So once I decided to pivot, Ihad more decisions to make.
What will I offer now?
This has been a continual workin progress, as I've made
several shifts in pivots overrecent years.
I see and understand now that Iwent through all of these
shifts so that I couldunderstand the process behind
how to make a pivot from oneniche into another, from one

(09:23):
focus into another, from one setof clients to another, so that
now I can guide others to do thesame much more efficiently than
I did.
Because, if you're like me, youhave an inner drive to evolve
and grow and, as a result, thework you do and who you serve
evolves right along with you.

(09:45):
And this is important to allowyour work to evolve right along
with you.
Not only is this important foryou to be continuously lit up by
what you're doing, but in orderfor the clientele that you are
here and destined to serve andlead to get the best results,

(10:06):
you must evolve your businessalong with your own inner
evolution.
And if you're like me, youlikely have a flame in your
belly that tells you that youcan't not pivot, shift or
up-level your work and yourclientele.
And I know for myself the workthat I did in the past did
provide amazing results for mypatients.

(10:26):
But I've since discovered moremodalities, perspectives and
angles to consider and Irecognize now that the work that
I do and the level ofexperience and insight and
perspectives that I can share, hold, guide and lead is now
better suited for a moreadvanced clientele.

(10:47):
And I know for many people whowork in the mental-emotional
sphere therapists, counselors, coaches who used to be
completely jazzed up byintroducing people to the
initial stage of, say, forexample, trauma therapy work or
awareness work or inner healingwork and as they've evolved

(11:08):
within themselves, they're nowdesiring not to just shift away
from survival mode behaviors butreally are ready to step into
full thriving mode.
And I see this for myself asI've evolved within myself and
my own personal healing work is.
I see that, while I can helpsomebody at the beginning stages

(11:30):
of learning self-awareness,that because of the baggage of
experience that I have now andmy deep drive to go deeper and I
know I have certainastrological patterns that
actually drive me to be going inthis direction.
My Mercury in my eighth house,my Venus in my Scorpio are all

(11:54):
things that I'm meant to go deepand take people deeper than the
initial stages, and I see thisabout myself now and with my
experience that I have now, Ican see that going deeper is
what lights me up, and so notonly is that important for my
own personal satisfaction, butthose people who are already

(12:16):
well-versed in self-awarenessand personal development and
then they come to see me, theywill skyrocket beyond anything
that they've ever even imagined.
I've had clients tell me thatafter seven years of
psychotherapy, what theyexperienced with me in a matter

(12:36):
of a few months was beyondanything that they had ever
gotten to in those seven yearsof psychotherapy, for example.
And the thing is that the workthat I do now and how I do it
now and the modalities that Iuse now and the approach that I
use now were not the things thatI was doing when I first
started my business.
But as I grew and evolved, Isaw that I needed to incorporate

(13:00):
those things.
At first I was afraid of whatmy clients would think and what
anyone else would think myfriends, my family, my
colleagues, and there was aworry about whether it would
cause my business to fall apart, whether it would fail and
whether I would regret thatdecision of making this pivot.

(13:21):
But what I've since realized isthat it won't make your
business fall apart.
Actually, when you alignyourself to what truly lights
your soul on fire, you can't notbe successful.
You become a guiding light anda magnet for the people who
you're destined to lead.
But it can, however, feelconfusing To tread through the

(13:45):
muddy waters of uncertainty.
New and unfamiliar territorycan be confusing, especially
when you're looking at your ownstuff, because often it's too
close for you to see the biggerpicture about yourself.
This is where guidance can beworth its weight in gold, and I
know this for myself.

(14:05):
I've had several mentors alongthe way and had I not had these
mentors, I would not be where Iam today.
I know for the people that Iguide the fact that they can
consult with someone who'snavigated the waters of pivots
and change that they want, who'sshifted niches and incorporated

(14:25):
more of what brings my own souland level of joy and
satisfaction and fulfillmentinto my work, and who's now
working with dreamy, idealclients while growing my success
, and this is helpful for themto be working with someone who's
already gone along this pathand can help you not only sort

(14:48):
out the strategy of how to makethis pivot in your work more
successfully, so that you aremore aligned with your inner
purpose and finding moresatisfaction in your work, while
maintaining your success andgrowing it, but there's also the
deeper inner aspect to consider, and that is that with change,

(15:12):
there's always new perspectivesand mindset shifts to address.
With change, there's always newchallenges to face, and this is
the stuff of life, and this iswhat I'm specialized in guiding
people to walk through isnavigating the layers,
navigating the challenges andcoming out the other side.

(15:34):
I've done it over and overagain, whether it was for people
working with their health, whether it was for people
wanting to master their highsensitivity, whether it was for
people wanting to heal theirrelationships, and now for
people who are wanting to morefully align their work so that
they do feel more aligned andfulfilled.

(15:55):
There's always going to belayers that come up as you
navigate more deeply, aligningyourself, and when you have an
unbiased third party that canhelp you see what you can't see
yet.
It changes everything, and thisis the thing.
If you're like me, you know thatyour work in this lifetime is

(16:16):
supposed to be purposeful,soul-led.
You are a leader and, as aleader, you know that your
journey is alchemizingchallenges into purpose so that
you can lead others throughsimilar things and beyond.
And this is what lights me upand this is why I keep pivoting,

(16:40):
because, as I see more and moreon my journey, I can lead
others through what I've gonethrough and come out the other
side and beyond where I am, andit's a beautiful thing to watch
and it makes me feel like mylife has more meaning, not
because of what I do, butbecause I am so connected to my

(17:03):
own flow of my own journey andbeing able to guide others
through the overflow of my joyof being connected to what I
really love and then watching asthe people that I work with
come out the other side into acompletely upgraded paradigm

(17:23):
from where they are now.
That upgraded paradigm is youfully, deeply aligned with your
soul work so much so that itdoesn't feel like work, that you
feel excited and lit up andpassionate about what you're
doing.
And you are handsomelycompensated for what you're
doing because you are thismagnet for the people who you

(17:47):
are destined to lead.
And then the people that youare destined to lead naturally
transform and align withinthemselves, and when they do
that, then that positivelyimpacts every soul that they
touch in their lives.
Can you see the impact of thisripple effect and how this is
not only important for you inyour work and doing what you

(18:11):
love, but you aligning toyourself and what you love and
really stepping into owning whoyou are and doing your work from
that place helps the peoplehere destined to lead to do the
same.
And this is how we all heal.
And when you are fully alignedwith what you do and fully

(18:32):
loving what you do and operatingfrom your inner soul-led
passion, then you heal.
I saw it time and time againwhen I was working with people
with chronic health conditionsIs when we did this inner work
of connecting and realigning itwith yourself so that you feel

(18:53):
completely aligned and connectedand satisfied and fulfilled
within your life.
Your health just naturallybalances out, and this is one of
the secret sauce ingredientsthat isn't talked about enough
In our society.
We're conditioned to believethat our work is about how much
money we make.

(19:13):
Some people feel guilty aboutwanting to do what really truly
lights up their soul if it's notwhat they're doing right now,
because it maybe feels like abit of a champagne problem, and
why should they be complaining?
Because they're already wellpaid for what they're doing, and
financial security is only apiece of the puzzle.
If you don't have that innerpassion and you're not connected

(19:36):
to your inner purpose andyou're not connected to yourself
and your joy, then money isonly going to get you so far on
its own.
And if you want to have agreater impact for society, for
humanity, for the greater good,as I just explained, connecting
with yourself and your soul-ledmission is not only healing for

(19:57):
yourself, but this is how youlead others to do the same for
themselves and this is how theycan heal more effectively from
within.
This is the thing.
Diet and lifestyle is important, but it's not everything.
There's this deeper aspect ofself and inner connection that
needs to be addressed in.

(20:17):
If it isn't, diet and lifestylewill only take you so far.
And I see the same thing inbusiness.
Business strategy is absolutelyimportant, but if you haven't
addressed aligning what you'redoing to what you know that your
soul purpose wants you to bedoing, then the business
strategy is only going to takeyou so far when it comes to

(20:40):
inner satisfaction andfulfillment.
If you can't tell, I'm quitepassionate about this.
I hope this was helpful for youin some way to deliver a little
bit of perspective.
If you haven't consideredwhether or not your work is
truly sparking joy, andespecially if you are great at
what you do but it's not asenjoyable as it used to be, and

(21:02):
if this calls to you and youknow you're at that place where
you want to more deeply alignyour work to who you are now and
where you've come on your ownpersonal evolution journey and
you want to incorporate more ofthat and up level the clientele
of who you're working with at amore advanced stage on the

(21:24):
journey.
You want someone who's beenthere, done that, to help you
with not only the strategy butwith the inner mindset, energy
and identity work, so that youcan really embody that next
level of your evolution morepowerfully for yourself, for the
clientele that you're leadingand the level of success and

(21:46):
satisfaction that you're havingwith the work that you know that
your soul wants you to be doing.
This is the work that sparksjoy within me.
Now my one-on-one work isdesigned for a very specific
person in mind and for thatright, fit person, magic truly
happens, and that's because I'mdoing my own purpose led work.

(22:09):
When you do the work that'smost aligned and fulfilled to
what truly sparks joy in yoursoul the people who you're most
aligned to work with, experiencemagical results.
I see this over and over withthe people I work with and when
I help others who are pivotingwithin their own business and

(22:31):
start to work with more aligneddream clientele, magic truly
happens.
If this sounds like somethingthat you're looking for,
definitely reach out.
Send me a message overInstagram and let's chat.
No pressure.
It's really important to ensure, especially if you want to work
in a longer-term mentorshipwith me, that we are a fit to

(22:55):
work together.
That's really when the magichappens.
And I do have some smallerone-on-one options, like the
intuitive business breakthroughreading and the eight-week
permission to shineself-discovery intensive.
If you're not ready to go allin with a deeper dive or you'd
like a taste test first, thoseare always options to consider.

(23:16):

I'm happy to connect and I'mhappy to share any information
that you need.
