(00:03):
OK, welcome to Into the Channel podcast primarily about WINS
football. I'm your host Dino de Suspetus
and as always I am joined by my Co host Mr. Grant Engel.
What is up man? I'm feeling pretty good, buddy.
I thought that was another two hours of pretty entertaining
football. We watched today and what do you
(00:24):
know, we have ourselves a final.Have ourselves a final.
I got close to nailing my finalsprediction.
I was excited about that. But I'm kind of glad that
neither of us nailed the finals exactly, even though these were
team number one and team #2 in terms of FIFA ranking, betting
odds, however you want to think about that.
(00:45):
Spain, England, we've got ourselves a final and I like
that neither of us predicted thefinal because now we can go into
tomorrow's final preview, You know, with a little bit of a
clean slate, we can kind of approach it.
We know we're not, we're not totally, you know, beholden to
our take integrity. So we can, you know, think
outside the box and approach it with, you know, some with some
(01:07):
clean takes. So I'm excited about that.
OK, are we reaching an agreementthere because I mean, you know,
with no spoilers, I guess. But I did pick Spain to win this
thing and they're in the final. I picked Spain to win the
tournament before. So I don't know what TuneIn
tomorrow to see if you know, thetake integrity holds.
What a what a radio tease that is.
(01:28):
You did have Spain beating Sweden.
That's not the final that we got.
And I had, you know, Germany beating England, not the final
that we got, you know, that Germany would, would squeak by.
And I got, I got, I got close. I think it was probably 12 or 13
minutes in when, when I, when I was like, I could be I, I might
have to, we might be enrolled the tape territory.
I might have to, you know, go back and find that old episode
(01:50):
and, you know, clip out that little preview and get it ready
for, for tonight's little show. But, you know, wasn't the case.
But let's get to it, man. Where?
Where do you want to get started?
Spain won Germany nil after added extra time.
I mean, Germany, man, you know, red cards, injuries, adversity,
difficult times, you know, scoring at that points some
(02:13):
other times where there are moments of brilliance where they
can score questions about the defense.
They just powered through, man. They just trucked along
throughout this tournament with some some brave, bold defending
at times. And they made a match out of
this one. And it was, you know, we said
like, you couldn't count them out after the way they played
(02:34):
against France. And they still somehow, in my
mind, delivered pretty nicely even in this loss.
Yeah, I would say so. I mean, and it really does speak
to their tournament experience. You know, we're talking about
pre show a little bit like the notion of like beating the
Champions. Like, yeah, Germany's not the
defending champ, but they are one of the Ogs, maybe the OG of
this European Championship. And it's kind of like, you know,
(02:57):
it's like one of the, you know, the one of the big evil bosses
you have to get past, you know, if you're Spain.
And I think they were saying on the telecast that Spain had
never beaten Germany in a big competition, I guess which?
I believe yes. Always surprised to hear that.
But yeah, Germany was tough and it felt like they got better.
To your point, like despite the injuries, despite the
suspensions, the red cars, the, you know, the like they're
(03:18):
missing 3 starters, 3 key starters, lender, Julia Gavin
and Henrich. Like so it's like that's not
easy enough. They're all along the back line.
And now you're facing Spain, youknow, so all of that adversity
and this team got better. You know, this was, I don't
know, maybe their best performance of the tournament.
I mean, I was very impressed by what they were going to put
together today. Well, yeah, when you consider
(03:39):
the competition, I think it's absolutely in the argument for
their best performance. And they're without shook a new
skin too, which I think when youkind of look back on how this
match, you know, how the pace ofthis match played out and how
heavy legs start to play a factor as you know, one team
dominates the ball. You you feel terrible for
(04:01):
Shokanuskin because she has to kind of be sitting there
wondering like, if I was on the field, do I make a difference?
And you know, for a world class athlete like her, I'm I'm sure
she believes that she would havemade a difference.
So it's a it's a rough spot. But when you play Spain and they
are pressing, pressing you into oblivion and it's hard to get
(04:22):
the ball out of your defensive half.
You have to play incredibly tough defensive football and
Spain forced him into that. But it's it felt like Germany
was ready for that and and we'reready to be ready to be as tough
as possible. Yeah, no doubt.
What do you think of the? Well, actually, let's let's.
Yeah, it's been I, I can't believe it.
(04:44):
As I was talking, I was like, what am I waiting for here?
Dying of thirst. Cheers to you.
Cheers to football, of course. Salud, some might say.
Yep, salute just a la Roja making the final.
We're here. We did it.
(05:06):
That's right, we got there. The Sleepy Boys podcast, getting
across the fit. Whoa.
Right in front of the finish line.
Yeah, we're almost there. We're we're we're snoozing our
way to the news line first half a lot, you know, shades of
England, Italy. I thought it was played a little
bit on on Germany's terms, mostly because, you know, the
late Alexandri absence very apparent.
(05:29):
You know, I think Spain's attackstarting via that central
channel, that just kind of was not really a thing today.
A lot of it was like up the outside.
It was Bhatti on one side, Carmona on the other.
Yeah, I think that's kind of howthey were getting going.
Or if it started from deep, it was Bhatti like getting getting
started. And she was great today. 142
(05:50):
touches. She leads the match, also leads
Spain in shots, chances created and passes into the final third.
She was on absolute fire. Everything was running through
her. But yeah, despite, you know,
their frustration, like just kind of kept chipping away,
chipping away. And it it took them time, but
they got then they end up getting it done, obviously.
Yeah, and I mean, it seemed likethere was.
(06:12):
We talked about, you know, Germany's defense playing well,
but it seemed like there was a coordinated effort by Spain to
go after Francisca KET. I mean, you know, 20 year olds
for Bayern Munich, not a ton of experience.
We've we've praised her for coming on and playing well in
this tournament, but it felt like she was losing duels left
and right in this match And and Barcelona there we go.
(06:36):
Already tried to call him Barcelona once.
Let's do a notch that tally. But Spain?
Just got to step up. Yeah, exactly.
Spain was going to was going to try to take advantage of that
and they were they're finding some joy there.
Kent had that what could have amounted to a an absolute howler
(06:56):
where she basically played the ball to a stair.
I think it was around like the 21st minute and a stair cracked
it with her right foot. But you know, obviously Anne
Katrinberger is going to be a brick wall for as long as
humanly possible. It's just who she is in in
tournament play, really just in any, any time she's on the
pitch. But yeah, I mean, that you had
(07:17):
the the Peretis header off the post.
Germany was holding tough. Spain was just like, we're going
to do our thing. We're going to get into our
stuff. We're going to, you know, run
our, our like, our routes essentially like all over the
field. And it felt like toward the end
of the first half, it was real scary hours for Germany where it
(07:37):
looked like Spain was going to get one before the half.
And I think obviously, you know, shout out to Laura Harvey, head
coach of Seattle Rain FC, who always says in the post game
press conference, goals change games.
I thought that could have been areal gut punch to Germany.
But they held it. They held off at least in that
first half. I mean obviously well into extra
(07:59):
time, but Spain, it's another one of those things where did
they play their A+ game? Definitely not, but their A
minus game. They can still get across the
line against a a great competitor like Germany.
Yeah, they I think some of the stats are pretty telling for the
match. So I, I actually thought KET
was, was pretty good on the leftside defensively, you know,
(08:21):
considering her inexperience like that, I thought she was up
for the duels and kind of like was at least involved in stuff.
And it's funny because like whenyou mentioned Shukaduskin, who
Newskin was or was replaced by was, you know, 30 year old Sarah
Dembritz, who just was not superinvolved in the match.
As an example, I think 2020 ish touches and 64 minutes in the
midfield where, you know, a lot of the the action was happening.
(08:44):
But I thought, you know, you look at some of the stats.
So Spain 340 touches in Germany's half, but only 39 in
Germany's box. So that's kind of where Germany
was like, all right, we're goingto hold the line here.
And you know, to their credit, if you can get bodies there and
they could be in the right place, everybody's positioning,
everybody's marking, and then those extra bodies are just in
(09:05):
the right lane, taking away passing and shooting lanes.
And then you have beggar in likein in goal.
You can kind of get away with a little bit of bend, but don't
break, you know, and I think what Spain was doing was trying
to go wide. You know, I think it was a lot
of like Patri, like going wide with passes or Battier or
Carmona just running with it. That's what Germany was giving
(09:28):
up. I think they were happy to do
it. They were happy to kind of like
let Spain possess give them a little bit of room even, but
just they they weren't going to take they weren't going to get
beat with like the back door cutis essentially, it's like, all
right, Well, now it's like 01 pass away from just an easy tap
in. To Germany's credit, they just
took that off the board and you know what we talked about Spain,
(09:50):
Switzerland, it's like we're notgoing to let we're not going to
beat ourselves. We're not just going to give you
a goal. And I think when you see when
the actual goal happens in this one, welded to add an extra
time, you know, credit to Germany's, you know, game plan,
Christian VOC. Like I think exactly what they
set out to do, they were able todo.
They were probably looking for ascore.
Clara Boule really close a couple times.
(10:11):
You know, you talk about like some of the offensive stats.
She led the match in shots, touches in the opponent's box
and chance is created for eitherteam.
She was either #1 or tied for first in in all three of those
categories. So she was super dangerous.
I think they were looking for for Bull to be able to cash in
at some point. Got close, got real close, but
(10:33):
not able to get it done. I mean, she got close in the
eighth minute. That pass from Berger, like way
up the field, I couldn't, I couldn't quite tell if it was a
Hoffman dummy or if she barely got a piece of it.
But you could tell it was from the training ground where, you
know, Hoffman runs in and and Bull comes around like that.
(10:54):
And when that happened, you know, I was just like, what kind
of game are we going to get here?
If if like that chance happens for Germany in the eighth
minute. But, you know, like you said and
like we'd always talk about, Spain's press is just dominating
and Germany had to pick their spots.
But they had some opportunities in there and, you know, they
just needed to be really preciseand really efficient with those
(11:17):
opportunities, which is so much easier said than done,
especially against Spain's defense.
But then when Katakoi is playingthe way she did behind that
Spanish defense, they're almost impossible to beat.
She. Was awesome and you know my my
favorite thing, you know my my favorite thing about Katakoi
obviously obviously played in a bunch of big games.
(11:39):
We always find some joy in the fact that realizing she's still
just 20, just turned 24 years old and all this championship
experience, that wildest thing about Katakoi's game is she'll
go 60-70 minutes with nothing todo, like nothing to do.
And then just get, because she plays for Spain, she plays for
(11:59):
Barcelona, she gets to play in these highest leverage Creme de
la Creme type matches where eventhough she might go 6070 without
facing anything, when she does, it's going to be something very,
very intense, you know, and that's not easy to do to just
stand around and like be ready, you know, be ready to locked in,
you know, like when something 100 miles an hour's coming your
(12:20):
way. And consistently, consistently,
she gets that done, you know, nothing doing nothing doing
called into action. And she just is it.
It looks like she's had 50 saveson the day.
Like it is how springy she is. How, you know, instinctive she
is, you know, just cover how much ground she covers.
She's awesome. And I think there were
(12:41):
definitely a couple spots. It it it, it made me think a lot
about the the matches that she missed early in the group stage
where Spain did let in one or two goals.
It's like if if they don't have got that going today, I don't
think they win them. I, I think flat out, I don't
think they win the match. Wow, I love it.
It's a good take. Springy is such a good way to
(13:01):
describe her. I was going to mention like, I,
I think about like her flexibility of like, you know,
you'll see the way she'll like dive backwards.
I thought Lori Lindsay had a hada funny comp where she had said
like it that save that she makeswhen bulls shot takes just the
wicked deflection off Ola Carmona's back, which I'll be
like way late too. In like the highest leverage
(13:22):
situation. It's like the 88th minute.
I think at that point or no, no,I, I think the, that bullshot, I
think that was they were in stoppage time.
I think it was 90 + 4. It takes the IT takes a
deflection off Carmona's back and she has to kind of track
back. You know, it's it looks like a
like a a difficult pop up in baseball to get it off the line.
And then she gets it off the line, falls into the goal and
(13:46):
then has the flexibility and thespringiness to your point to
like slingshot herself using thenet and then get back into
position to stop Vomser's shot. I mean, those are two game
saving and eventually game-winning saves by Coy.
Yeah, pretty wild. I went back and looked in Liga
(14:06):
F, the season 22 matches played, thirty shots on target attempted
against her. So roughly one shot on target a
match in Liga F20 over the wholeentire season.
And you know, and this is what she's got to do.
She's got to just stand there with again, not a whole lot to
do and, you know, just face yourbest because like every every
(14:27):
team that she's playing in that 70th, 80th minute, you get their
best shot. Like they're like they're
digging as deep as they possiblycan.
And we see it time and time again.
She just steps up and and stuffsit, you know, and it like, I
don't know, also a very unsung big gamekeeper for sure and got
a great got that going game today for sure.
I want to talk a little Aitana, I think, I think, I think an
(14:49):
apology is in order. You know, I I had I had a little
a little conversation starter last episode where I was like,
all right, well, if we could have any player, you know, who
would we take? You know, and and you to your
credit, took Alexia, I thought was a good pick.
I took, you know, Pina, which I thought was a good pick and
Aitana just was like, you dummy, you imbecile, you as stupid
(15:13):
though I am the greatest player on the planet.
And let me tell you why I thought what Beaumonti was doing
today was, was really exciting, very purposeful, very
intentional with some of those moves and some of those pivots
in the box. Like let me let me open up a lot
of space here because I'm just tired of Germany like kind of
suffocating us. And we got a really creative
(15:36):
Beaumonti performance from an offensive standpoint.
The goal comes late, but what what was your what was your take
on on the the entire Beaumonti performance today?
You know, we've seen her show upin the gigantic moments too,
right? Like, I mean, she she has that
in her game. She's a two time Balandor winner
for a reason. Yeah, when we had talked about
like who would our our first picks be?
(15:57):
The guy had mentioned like, Oh yeah, I'd take Alexia one and
then probably and Bone Latitu and then Pina.
And even then, you know, she would probably call me in a
stupido as well. So, like, I think that's just,
you know, like you said, she hasthe crown.
She is the best player in the world.
And you know, her vision, the toughness, she just, and it's
(16:20):
still and like, I shouldn't be surprised.
She just turns The Jets on so quickly sometimes around like,
God damn, she's faster than everybody too.
Like, like on top of all of her other attributes, she's just
gonna run by you. And that, yeah, when she gets
the goal, the dummy that she that she plays and then the, the
immediate, the the like the quick twitch turn to get like to
(16:43):
get faced up. I, I think Lori Lindsay had said
like, oh, I don't know if she said it outright, but she it
seemed like she was kind of hinting at maybe it was a cross
where she said something to the effect of like she wanted to
play the ball in the middle. I don't think so.
It soon didn't look like like you see her like she glances up
when she hits it. I think she's staring down at
(17:05):
the ball, but like when she's looking up, you can tell she's
looking at exactly where she wanted the ball to go.
And it's in the it's it's side netting.
Because I like her. She just computes everything so
quickly to where she's like, oh,burger's off the line a little
bit, I'll sneak that past. And she had to hit a rocket to
sneak it past her. But it's what she does.
A rocket with like very little wind up very little window, you
(17:29):
know, and I and I wrote in my notes, like on Koch and Burger,
like obviously a vet, you know, seen it all, but never seen that
before. I guess from that player, like,
I mean from that player, from that angle, you know, those
stakes, that moment, like that'sjust not you could tell Berger
was like just not didn't, didn'tthink that that angle was
(17:50):
possible from how she was playing because she's she's even
kind of floating away from the window.
You know, she's like, OK, oh Beaumont TS going, you know,
closer to the end line. That means that I can, you know,
come and play this cross and move, you know, slide over the
other way. Didn't think it was possible in
any way, shape or form that thatBeaumont, he was going to get it
by her. And I agree with you.
(18:10):
Like if that was double L's take.
I, I think I'm, I'm way on the other side.
I think I'm way on the other side.
That was 1000% a shot. And that's ultimately what I
love about tournament football is sometimes it just comes down
to that your best player versus their best player, and
somebody's going to win this little duel.
And this little duel is going to, you know, effectively decide
(18:33):
the match. And like that's kind of what we
got in the 100, what, 113th minute.
Yeah, and the obviously this is an extremely we're on record.
We got a million receipts. This is an extremely pro Lori
Lindsay podcast never get that twisted ever in your life touch
type. Yeah, absolutely.
So, you know, I, I, I don't meanto misquote the legend.
(18:55):
I I think I just remember that. So please, you know, Fact Check
me, check me in general in the comments.
If I if I had that wrong. I, I want to read something
though, because it is, it is part of the just the brutal
nature of professional sports, of high leverage professional
sports where these athletes giveso much of themselves, of their
identities to these matches. Here's on Katrin Berger after
(19:19):
the match. She said, quote, I take the
blame on myself. The near corner must have been
closed. Absolutely.
She went on to say, quote, I canmake as many saves as I want,
but that should have been mine. I'm incredibly sorry for the
team. We're really disappointed.
A small mistake. One moment of not paying
attention and that's all the more bitter.
(19:39):
It's just disappointing. End Quote.
And so you just feel terrible for her in that spot.
You never want to see, you know, you think about like in American
sports, like Chris Webber or like Bill Buckner or something
where like, you know, something happens and you're just like, I
made this bad mistake. I think the thing that hopefully
(20:00):
Berger takes, you know, some solace in is 1.
She was a beast throughout this entire tournament.
She was absolutely fantastic. Germany's not in this position
without her. That's easy, easy money there,
there's no doubt. And then secondly, it's it's
Aitana Bona Mati who looked up, saw a saw a small window.
(20:20):
And, you know, sometimes you just lose to Michael Jordan.
That's just kind of how it goes sometimes.
Yeah, no doubt. I'm, I'm, I'm looking through my
notes. I took old school paper and pen
notes today. So apology, there was nothing in
the dark. But nice.
Speaking of Burger, there was a stretch here in the 42nd minute
and I've got it here. Perez hits post Estera bicycle
(20:42):
Mariona shot AKB save well worked Ester again AKB save pina
AKBC before halftime. So just like just like yeah,
burger burger, burger burger like right before halftime just
kind of getting pelted. So, you know, I don't there's no
way that giving up that goal is anywhere, anywhere near the
(21:04):
ballpark or the city or the zip code of the of Chris Rubber,
Bill Buckner for me, like, yeah, that was just getting beat by a
great player who saw an opportunity and caught you
leaning the wrong way. That's not I mean, if she took
if she got the ball and kicked it into her own net, we can talk
about that. But this was just again, their
(21:25):
best against your best and you know, their best.
Find a way to to sneak one by you like late in the match.
And and I think talking about how tough Germany was
defensively and and everybody played tough, Minga, Vomser,
Kleinhurner, like everybody likereally was, was fully, fully
locked in. But those chances they chip away
at you like they're just coming. They're coming from different
(21:47):
players from different angles. And you just break defensively.
It's just too much, you know, becomes too much to kind of like
really account for. And that's why we see late in
matches, you know, the defense eventually caves against these
offenses that that are just too high-powered.
Yeah, I think that's that's totally fair.
And you know, the dam breaks eventually, like like you said,
(22:08):
and you always see on social media, it's one of the things
that I I'm always very open about is but I think most people
who talk about football, we justdon't know a damn thing about
goalkeeping either. So like a lot of the goalkeeper
critics on on Wosso social mediaare just like can't get beat in
your post there. You're too far off the line.
(22:28):
And I'm just kind of like, I like I under I intellectually I
kind of understand the idea, butlike, I don't know, I, you know,
like most people play in the field, right?
When we grow up playing football, like even at the
crappy levels that that we played soccer or whatever.
But like, I don't know, man. It's just a different, it's just
a different animal. It's like, you know, if you hear
(22:49):
people in baseball, they're talking about like catcher play.
It's like, how much do you know about that?
Like, yeah, you ever get it? Or like we're talking about the
center in, in NFL football, it'sjust like, come on, man.
Like it's, it's a, it's an incredibly difficult position.
Yeah, I mean it also, I I hate conversations that take away
from the magic. And for me the magic.
(23:11):
That's a good point. Was Bomati like, yeah, that
that's an awesome fucking goal. And like you can take, you can't
take anything away from from that.
And it's just such a sneaky likeand a genius player with a
sneaky finish in like a weird spot where they needed they
needed that like they just needed it because this one goes
to PKS and all of a sudden it's like who knows what happens?
(23:34):
I mean, it's just like the coin flip of all coin flips.
And this this year has been extra coin flippy in this
tournament. So they get it done in regular.
No, not in regulation, but add extra time and take PKS
completely off the table. I did want to mention to one
other player first main. I thought battier today was
awesome. No, Alessandra has mentioned, I
(23:54):
think Battier not only picked upthe slack creating, you know,
offensively, second on the team and touches 124 today, but also
tracking back defensively, you know, providing an extra body
piece of personnel back there just to kind of as a backstop to
help Mendez and Perettas when needed.
I thought she was really important.
(24:14):
And then as mentioned, you know,Boule on one side, Bron on the
other and you know, Spain was able to keep them in check.
Battier a big a big part of thatas well.
Yeah, no doubt. I mean, it's it's the backbone
of every great team. I think if there was another
player that I wanted to mention,no surprise for anybody who's a
follower of the pod, but predictably Olga Carmona was
great. I mean, there was the weird
(24:35):
deflection that Koi had to make the save on, but just another
big game player who's going to play with gigantic heart out
there. I know it's not the most
measurable characteristic you could have, but when you have
when you have those on the back line and you know you have to
put in Mendez instead of Aljandre, you know she's going
to be buoyed by bartier Carmona. And I've heard I've heard, but
(24:59):
it has take a little bit of stick on wosso social media.
So I thought, you know, again, agood performance by her and
they'll see England in the finalat this point.
And, you know, England has good defenders, but it's not like
they have the most reliable defense.
So I think we're in for a very interesting rematch of the 2023
(25:22):
World Cup final. Hell yeah.
And what do you say we get together tomorrow to talk about
it? That'll be fun.
I think that's fine. And I think to your Paretta's
point, I totally agree. I think Paretta's been awesome
in this tournament, better than I think we saw her play this
past season in Barcelona. And, you know, just another
reminder that, you know, club forum and, you know,
(25:44):
international forum, they're, they're all, there always could
be some differences there. And, you know, it always trips
me out to when I think about the, the US swimsation team in
Roosevelt, 'cause sometimes people like, oh, well, Roosevelt
is just getting up in there in age.
So I'm not sure if, you know, we'll want to bring that play.
And I was like, we're trying to win a tournament that takes
place over three weeks. You know, we're not building a,
you know, we're not building a franchise for the next 10 years.
(26:05):
We, we sort of are. But first and foremost, it's
about winning this tournament. And you know, Peretta is a
perfect example of like a playerthat was built and was was ready
to help Spain win this tournament, get to the final.
And then, you know, it's been playing awesome.
I think she's she's gotten, I think he's either scored or
she's definitely hit the post more than once, you know, and
just involved defensively, like super dependable and just
(26:29):
playing great. So I think I totally echo that
Peretta's point. So shout out to her as well.
We'll see if we'll see what the defenses look like when when the
final rolls around on Sunday. Yeah, and it's a good point by
you to point out that Beretta has had some had some rough
moments for Barcelona. And that's and that's probably
what I'm thinking of what peoplekind of jumping on Wilson blue
skies. So I think, you know, some of
(26:49):
that is fair, but it's tournament time and Spain is is
turning up big. So I don't know, dude.
I feel like we're in for a classic, but I'll I'll save the
rest of the takes for the preview.
Yep, Spain is turning up big, asare your boys.
So episode calendar, sad to say we won't be back tomorrow, you
(27:09):
know, but we will be back. Oh, sorry, we will be back
tomorrow to preview the final. But that's the last time we'll
be back tomorrow. And then we'll be back Sunday to
to recap the final. I mean, you remember the 2023
World Cup? I wasn't.
I was pretty confident throughout the tournament.
But then when England went up against Spain, I was less
confident. I still predicted an England
(27:31):
victory in the final. Obviously that didn't work out.
So yeah, I don't know a lot of alot of soul searching to be done
by your boy over these next 24 hours.
All right, man, well, I'm definitely counting on you to do
it. This has been another subject to
the channel. Thank you, thank you, thank you
for hanging out. If you enjoyed the show or love
ones fall as much as your boys do, make sure you're kicking

And a big thank you to my coach as well, Mr. Grant Angle for a
debutante no more. He's a veteran.
He talked about Spain being informed and ready for the
(28:11):
final. I mean, that that makes two.
Well, I guess that makes three of us, Spain, England and your
boys at the ITC, which, you know, is just not possible
without you, man. I appreciate you bro.
Likewise, buddy, nobody I'd rather do it with.
And Speaking of inform, I mean, I just appreciate you guys
coming in full force. Like a couple of our last few
(28:32):

compared to like the history of the show.
