Matchday 5 in the UEFA Women's Champions League offered further clarification on the eight teams making the knockout stage and where they'll land in their groups.

But there are still a few things to be decided, as well as some intriguing matchups to get excited about.

In this episode, we lock in on Real Madrid hosting Chelsea in a match to decide who will win Group B. We go over the squads' recent form, the tiebreakers to consider, and then make our predictions.

After that, we discussed Lyon vs. Wolfsburg. Even though the group has been decided after Wolfsburg's MD5 victory over Roma, we're still psyched to watch these two powerhouses compete.

(00:25):
and as always, I'm joined by my Co host Mr. Grant Angle.
What is up man? I'm feeling all right, buddy.
I'm not going to let the opportunity pass me by.
We've been waiting too long to crack these beers in the last
few episodes. I've just been forgetting.
So I'm just going to get into itright now.
I'm ready to talk about what happened on match day five, what
we're looking forward to in match day six.
I'm ready to get it popping if you will.

(00:50):
Consider it popped. Cheers to you my good man.
Cheers to you as well. All right, match day five in the
books. Match day 6 right around the
corner here. We're recording this Sunday
night and we've got Champions League action this week Tuesday
and Wednesday. Mr. Grant Angle, where do you
want to get started? Let's get.
Started with Group BI, Think we should probably talk about the
matches with Real stakes on the final day here.

(01:12):
Real Madrid versus Chelsea, a couple of small, plucky underdog
clubs going at it once again in the Champions League.
All right, so let's start with the tiebreaker.
OK, so Chelsea right now, they're sitting on 15 points.
Real Madrid is sitting on 12 points.
Obviously, in the first match ofthe group stage, Chelsea
defeated Real Madrid three to two in London.

(01:34):
What does this mean? Let's just say, let's just say
lightning strikes. And not to not to undervalue
Real Madrid, but Chelsea we all know is a juggernaut.
They're one of the juggernaut ofjuggernauts in this sport.
Let's just say Real Madrid gets a one nil victory versus Chelsea
on match day six. That would draw them level on 15
points in Group D. And then we go to the first

(01:55):
tiebreaker. That's points head to That would
be three to three. The second tiebreaker, goal
difference, head to head, they'dbe tied.
They don't. They'd be level on zero.
Then we go to the third tiebreaker.
That would be goals scored head to head, and they would be tied
at three each. And so now we get to our first
piece here. If Real Madrid can win by
multiple goals, they'll win the group.

(02:16):
OK, makes sense. How else did they get in all?
Right, this is where we get realinteresting.
The 4th tiebreaker is finally weget to the traditional goal
differential in all group stage matches and miraculously Real
Madrid is already ahead of Chelsea 14 to 12 in gold
differential in this group stage.

(02:38):
In a group stage where we've seen the most elite clubs like
Barcelona and Lyon and Chelsea is, you know, in that class.
Barcelona and Lyon are way aheadon gold differential.
Chelsea has not created that same distance, but Real Madrid
on the strength of beating Celtic 7 nil across their two
matches and then an additional 7nil victory over Twente, they've

(02:59):
been able to create that cushionand it could come into play and
win them a group. Yeah, that would be massive,
obviously. And you look at match day 5,
Madrid takes on Celtic, they getanother three, no win there to
kind of pad that number. And I think what struck me about
Las Blancas is they're bringing tremendous firepower off the
bench. Yeah, you look at the match

(03:20):
against Celtic, it's Athene on the 71st, it's Alba Redondo in
the 78th, Carolyn Mohler in the 83rd, Teresa Viera on the 84th,
and they brought on Shayla Garcia, who had the assist on
the Redondo header. So I mean, this is huge
firepower today versus Debor TiVo, they get another win.
They bring on senior Bruin, Caroline Weir, Linda Gaisetto,
Naomi Feyer, Felipe Angel Doll. Those were their 5 Subs.

(03:42):
Let's go. Definitely not the Real Madrid
of last year. And I think that's one thing
that we've seen. Depth is really what is
extending these leads. It's proving to be a huge
differentiator. We'll get into like Wolfsburg,
Roma later. But I think depth definitely
played a factor there. I mean, obviously these two
teams are going to lock up this week.
They open up the proceedings Tuesday, 12:45 PM Eastern, 9:45

(04:04):
AM Pacific. What are you going to be looking
out for? Well, I'm glad you mentioned
that Tenaya del Castillo, because then the announcer
mentioned on the broadcast that she came back early from AI
believe a broken collarbone injury or a collarbone injury of
some kind, which as soon as he announced that, you know, I knew
she was hurt. I didn't realize it was a it was
a broken collarbone. That's just the most Atenea type

(04:26):
of shit that you could possibly imagine is that I'm pretty sure
she just yelled at her collarbone and said you're done
being injured. Now I'm gonna go out and play
football. And you think about the way
Naomi Feyer has played. She's looks really good on that
right wing. So now it's like they've had
this opportunity to kind of develop a little extra depth, a
little more trustworthy depth upfront.

(04:47):
And like you said, I think that could play a role.
But man, those Chelsea Blues, they can look like a flying
death machine at times. Although little bit of a wobble
here recently if we can call it.Maybe not a wobble, but at least
a little hiccup. Maybe the first one we've seen
under this Bon pastor. Regime, I'm so happy that you
brought up Bon Pastor because I feel like this is her first real

(05:09):
test at Chelsea. Like, you know, these three
matchups, match day five this weekend and now Madrid for the
group. Yeah, today versus Leicester,
Bon Pastor makes 7 changes to the starting lineup.
Now Chelsea was able to dominate28 shots to two versus Lester,
but I don't think the finishing was there.
They weren't quite as sharp as they were against FC-20.

(05:30):
They still have a shot to be oneof three teams to clear the
group stage undefeated. But something I mean, I agree
with you. I think outside of Vika Kaptine,
who is working her way into the special category, just like must
watch category, especially for such a young player, I agree
with you. I think I think Chelsea might be
gettable on this day. I'm not sure exactly where my

(05:51):
head's at with regard to this, but I do.
I wouldn't be shocked. I think I'll take that same
tact. I would not be shocked if
compelled to bet on it, even though I don't think it would be
great value. I would bet on Chelsea to win,
even in Madrid. I like that you brought up kind
of the lack of finishing and some of the sharpness.
I realized they'd be 26 to one. But in that opening goal, when

(06:16):
Kent Macario and Myra Ramirez are running at the defense,
which by the way is a terrifyingprospect for or any defense,
Macario actually misses the first pass that would have
played Ramirez in one-on-one with the keeper.
So then Ramirez kind of has to like reset, get it back outside
to Cat Macario. But then she just makes the
magic happen off the bounce. An unbelievable demonstration of

(06:39):
skill. But there was that little piece
of me that was just like, OK, well, they missed the pass You.
I think you would like that little that could have been a
little bit sharper. Obviously, nobody's arguing with
the results. She still has incredible quality
to to score it, but those littlemissed passes when you're
playing Champions League football against the elite of
the elite teams, No disrespect to FC Twente, they just seem not

(07:01):
to be there yet. That kind of stuff could come
back to bite you. Yeah, man, I get it Mr. Grant
Angle. And not that impressed.
Yeah, come on, come on, Cavalcario.
That goal wasn't nearly impressive enough.
Oh, my God, unbelievable. And then you get my Ramirez
scoring with a ball that travelled, I don't know, 5055
area yards, just chipping to keep her from, I mean, a great,

(07:22):
great distance away. And then Eric Cuthbert, whose
goal also travelled 55 area yards, but it's because it went
20 yards in the air, back down 20 yards.
That one was funny. Yeah, Chelsea on point, that
Macario Ramirez 2 headed break. Absolutely terrifying.
I do think that Chelsea, you know, thinking about what
happened today versus Lester, I really think that they miss

(07:43):
Khadija Buchanan. No shade at Millie Bright or
Natalie Bjorn, but I just think that they're kind of stuck.
Not a lot of flexibility. I think Lucy Bronze is, you
know, obviously been huge in terms of an addition.
Ashley Lawrence now getting intorhythm on the other side.
But I don't know, back to Real Madrid real quick.
Their scoring ability is is really heating up.
Like you look at Senior Bruin. Yeah.

(08:04):
I mean, I just shouted in my notes, the Punisher because not
only does she finish, but she just like is angry at the ball
and is angry at the net and is angry at the air in between
those two. And she just kind of wants to
take it out on folks. And then Alba Redondo, I mean,
she had a header, the one that Imentioned the the ball from
Sheila Garcia. I'm not sure how she was able to

(08:26):
generate that kind of power fromthat angle.
I mean, it just should not have looked like that Absolute
professional goal scorer, one ofmy favorite players on the
planet. And I mean playing a crazy,
crazy brand of football right now.
Yeah, I think, I mean, we call her professional goal scorer.
You're so spot on about that header because like she just
figured out the way like what's the perfect angle?

(08:47):
What's the perfect spot of I hadto strike it with to generate
that little extra bit of power. It's like, I think you can teach
that, but I feel like people arelargely born with it and then
the ability to kind of teach themselves the rest.
Yeah, Come so easy to. Did we want to make a
prediction? I know we said that we wouldn't.
I feel like we've talked it out.I got a lot of stuff out of my
system with regard to Chelsea, Madrid.

(09:09):
I feel like I want to lean Madrid here.
Wow. I'm going to say that Las
Blancas clawed a draw. Give me two to two.
OK, I like that. I will say 21 Chelsea.
Chelsea gets a late winner, Madrid makes a real battle out
of it. Though, love it.
OK, the other couple teams in Group B, FC-20, Celtic, they'll

(09:30):
face off at the same time slot. 12:45 PM Eastern.
Not going to preview this one. Shout out to the two squads we
enjoyed watching but got to keepit moving.
Shift gears, Group A. This one doesn't quite have the
stakes. I think we were looking for
Leon, the only team to this point that's clinched the group.
Wolfsburg they earned their way in with a big heartbreaking for
your boy. 6 to one. I almost saw scout 6 to one win

(09:53):
over Roma. You called it, you were on it.
Wolfsburg. They are who you thought they
were. What was your main take away
from this one? They obviously come out firing,
they come out aggressive. Alex Pop gets the goal early, I
felt to kind of set the tone forthe rest of the match.
But you know, Roma, they are scrappy.
They stay in it. They just right now are having a
hard time turning defense into offense.

(10:16):
Because the great Sophie Lawson, who is a freelance women's
football writer, contributes work to ESPN.
Please correct me if I'm missingsome other outlets on there
because I'm, I'm guessing anybody who watches this program
probably follows Sophie's work. But she had pointed out that it
just feels like Roma everything is, can we get the ball to
Giacinti? Can we get the ball to Giuliano?

(10:36):
Like we just don't have a ton ofplayers that we can are able to
get the ball to and trust them to push the attack forward.
I think that's something that they're just going to have to
fix to make themselves a little more to take that next step in
the Champions. League, I think it speaks to the
depth point also. Yeah, not a lot of moves to go
to there for Roma. They bring on Trigoni a little
bit later to try to see if they could get some magic together

(10:57):
there, but they're counting on, you know, good amount of older
players. I think the first, the first bit
of my notes was, you know, ElenaLenari like is like limping off
like 3 minutes into the game. It's plus 1°C, a kickoff and
Wolfsburg hits the post like I think twice in the 1st 2 minutes
to kind of just set the tone andit's like, oh shit, now Linar is
limping off and I'm like, OK, this is this is going very, very

(11:18):
badly. The pop goal definitely felt
like it's coming. But yeah, like you mentioned,
Roma hung pretty tough. GT does get the goal.
We talked about that on last week's show.
OK, Like Roma would have the firepower to defend a little
bit, claw their way back into the game, which they did.
But then, yeah, Linneth Birnstein, she gets off the
Schneide, puts Wolfsburg up two to one, and then they bring in.

(11:40):
I don't know. We need a we need a nickname.
We definitely need a nickname. But that killer from Iceland
Savandis Jane Jones Diltier, which really do this real quick.
Apologies to the legend, Julie Foudy.
We learned from The Zone's Michael McCann that Jones
Diltier actually does mean John's daughter.
So who? Yeah.
You know, Foudy had it right. Egg on my face.

(12:02):
That's why she's a pro. And we're just out here doing
our best. Just to be clear.
Wait, she was telling you? John's daughter, I'm not, I'm
not 100% certain she's aware of the Icelandic meeting.
But you know what? Shout to the legend.
She's one of the greatest of alltime.
But let's let's give her the benefit of that.
If you want to question Julie Foudy based on what we know and
what we learned. Yeah, you know what?

(12:25):
Far be it from me. I don't want that smoke.
OK, That's fine. Sorry.
Julie Jones Dotere. Meaning John's daughter.
That's what you meant the whole time.
Gotcha. All right, so Jones Dotere comes
to the game, scores four goals. So in my notes I've got I've got
6880 five, 8990 + 2, which upon just looking at it looks like

(12:45):
one of those like apples suggested passwords.
It's just a random number. Unbelievable.
Capitalizes on a Soko mistake, beats the Soko again, shrugs off
Saki Kumugai for a third one. I mean, just looked unstoppable.
Just unstoppable. And real quick, they played
Vertibremen this weekend. We got a little glimpse of

(13:06):
Birenstein and Jones. Stotier on the same break,
looked a little Myra Mercario ish.
You know, I think it had the same level of like fear being
induced looking at those players.
Nice. Yeah.
I mean, you know, Birenstein Nets two against Verdure Bremen
today in from Bundesliga. I mean, Jones Stotier was timing
her runs so brilliantly in this match against Roma.

(13:29):
They just had no answer for her as soon as she got onto the
field. I mean, now if you pair her and
you have and you have Pop kind of maybe feeding in some passes,
Endem and feeding in some passeswith Berenstein, everybody's
kind of clicking. You mentioned Berenstein gets
off the the Champions League schneid.
I believe she did not. I think that might have been her
first goal for Wolfsburg in the Champions League, I think if

(13:51):
memory serves. So that's not terrifying for
opponents or anything. They're now three wins on the
spin in the Champions League, building confidence and now you
I have the 23 year old Icelandicpowerhouse gaining confidence
and that snowball starts rollingdownhill.
Everybody look out a. 100%, yeah.
And I think you look at this matchup versus Lyon, I went back

(14:13):
and checked out some of the numbers from the first one match
day one, Lyon takes that 1-2 nil.
When you look at how the goals were scored, one of them was
like crazy Du Mornay dime from distance that finds Wendy Renar
in the box, you know, kind of a little bit out of position, but
there smashes in the header. And then the second goal was Du
Mornay kind of running, you know, like on her way

(14:35):
out-of-the-box, getting fouled, running away from goal.
Leon earns the penalty, Harang gets the PK, and that's how you
get to two nil. Oh.
I remember that now, yeah. Yeah.
OK. I know what you're about, Yeah.
Wolfsburg brings on Famous Jane in the 77th, gets 14 minutes of
action, gets a shot on target, four shot Creating actions made
a difference late in that match.I think it's going to be

(14:55):
something to lookout for. But Leon on the other side has
just been dominant this season, combining the Premier League and
the Champions League. They've won 15 of 16, the only
blemish a nil, nil draw at PerryFC.
There's 68 goals for four against come on now, plus 64.
That's ridiculous. They only give up one goal in
five Champions League group sagematches.

(15:17):
That's ridiculous as well. Wolfsburg, though, on a pretty
good run as well after that lossto Lyon, put together seven
straight wins. They've won nine of 10,
including that three one win this morning over voted Bremen.
So I kind of wish this one had some stakes, but who knows?
These could be two teams that meet each other down the line as
well. Yeah, I mean, you never know.
I think the key thing here is we'll be on lineup watch in the

(15:38):
morning. We'll see what the what those
look like an hour before the match.
But yeah, even if they do rotatethe squads a little bit and kind
of, you know, maybe hold something back, I think you'll
still be able to glean somethingbecause like you, like you
mentioned, the depth is what kind of powers these big time
teams. So we might see some of these
players in important matches anyway.
So I think it'll be a pretty nice matchup to round out the

(16:01):
afternoon. Absolutely yeah, and for Lyon
depth might be ML madre and usually like some air and just
superstar players. Either way, it doesn't matter.
Roma Galatasaray going down at the same time in the late slot.
I might give this Roma Galatasaray match a watch.
I mean, I think I you know, I'llI'll catch it.
I'll catch it on the delay and quick, quick PSAI think going

(16:22):
into next year's group stage. Let's just make a pact the zone.
No spoilers. Some of us are out here trying
to watch these matches back-to-back, especially if we
have a team and in a specific group and there's another team.
We've got to track these things. At the same time, let's let's
uphold the drama. You do such a great job making
this content available for streaming, right?
Just push of a button couldn't be easier.

(16:44):
Or at the very least, you know, we've added this convention to
everyday life. Hey, spoiler alert, Manchester
City has gone up against St. Bolton.
Not so hard, you know. Give me a chance to hit the view
button and and. We're off and running.
I like it. I'm sure they'll heed that
warning. I think that makes sense.
Now next year, if I understand correctly, they are converting
the group stage into what I think they call the Swiss model.

(17:06):
So it's going to be like this league play thing that they're
doing in the well that they weresupposed to do in the men's
Champions League. I heard that they cancelled the
English Premier League in the men's Champions League.
I don't know what's going. I don't know what's happening
either those. So I don't think they're playing
any matches. I haven't heard anything about
what's going on in those, so don't don't bother telling me if
any scores are happening. But yeah, I do like the no

(17:26):
spoilers, even if they're going to do that kind of league play
model next year. You know, Dozone, they're
already looking out on not showing the scores like when we
go into the into the front end to kind of like put on the game.
So yeah, just that little extra heads up from the announcers.
I think we'd be all set. Yep, shout.
Out to zone. All right man, anything else you
want to hit before we get out of?
Here one thing because I'm not going to let us leave without

(17:48):
it. Just in case anybody forgot,
please roll the tape of me predicting three straight
Wolfsburg victories back when they were O and two in the group
stage. I'm here to tell you the
Wolfsburg Revenge Tour starts onmatch day three.
They're going to win both matches versus Galatasaray.
That'll get them to six, and then they're going to beat Roma.

(18:08):
They're going to get to 9. I'm making the prediction right
now. They're going to rattle off
three wins in a row in this tournament and get to 9 points
and then anything can happen from there.
Boom, nailed it. There it is.
Well deserved victory lap. This is not easy to do.
You know, we're we're we're embarrassing ourselves week in
week out here. You know, we could celebrate a
little something when we get something right.

(18:29):
And according to our Twitter poll, I think, yeah, I don't
know, 46% of the audience maybe agreed with you.
It wasn't it wasn't a slam dunk by any sense of the word.
Quick programming reminder, Part2 will be coming up probably
today, probably tomorrow, but definitely after this episode.
Or we'll be looking at Wednesday's Champions League
match day six matchups. We'll follow that up next week
with our best elevens of 2024. Have you started that by the

(18:50):
way? The research has begun.
I do not know if my 11 is set yet.
I don't feel, I don't feel like my 11 is set.
I have, I have names, but I still have some people floating
out there. I'm like, you should probably be
in there. Yeah, tough exercise.
I've got a first draft of the 11that I think very much could
change, but super excited about that episode.
And another reminder, February 7th will be live on YouTube

(19:10):
after the UEFA Women. Sam is a quarterfinal draw, so
make sure you're subscribed so you can join us for that.
All right, man, I think we did it.
