menopause journey and how itforced me to become the expert

Everybody, I'm excited to bewith you and excited about this
topic, and it's really aprecursor to next week's show,
which I'm going to be bringingmy nurse practitioner who I've
been seeing for the last nineyears, megan Wempey.
She'll be coming and joining meon the show and we're going to
be talking about hormones, we'lltalk about menopause.

We're going to talk about a lotof fun things, but today I
wanted to share some thingsabout my own personal journey
and, you know, I think it'simportant to consider the
context I'm about to talk about,because I think it plays an
important role in how weexperience ourselves and how we

(01:22):
experience, you know, being andliving inside of our bodies and
as women, you know, in ourculture.
Currently, as you know I knowthis podcast gets out
internationally, but I live herein America and so culturally,
you know, from the Westernperspective, we have a lot of
interesting views of our body,from body dysmorphia, body image

(01:47):
.
You know all of that, and so Iwanted to share some of the
things I'm about to share today,really as a precursor to the
next episode.
Healing, as I like to say, is aprocess.
It's a process within and itcan't be sought after outside of
our bodies at all.
And years of stress and dailymismanagement of diet, exercise

(02:13):
can truly cause unnecessaryoxidation on our internal
systems, and the crazy thingabout that is that it can be a
slow, silent and deadly killerover time time, because there
could be things going on in yourbody that you may not even know
, and unless you're really intune, you may not feel it, you

(02:33):
may not hear it, you may notsense it until it's too late.
So one thing I'll say is no,I'm not a doctor, I'm not a
nutritionist.
No, I'm not a doctor, I'm not anutritionist.
However, I have become, or Ihave continued to become, the
expert of my own body and whatit needs, but I've also learned
in the last several years whatit no longer needs or what it no

(02:57):
longer can have.
Over the last five years, I'vebeen on a roller coaster journey
of healing my body from theinside out and I've had days
where and some of you may beable to relate to this I've had
days of absolute neuropathy painlike through every fiber of my

(03:18):
body, to where it was aching andthrobbing, to the point of
where I couldn't even move andit felt like knives, knives
coursing through my veins andespecially when I would try to
get out of bed in the morning,it just it was debilitating and
I even had a blood vessel burst.

(03:38):
I'd gotten a call from work anda blood vessel burst in my eye.
I'd in a call at work.
I was getting my hair done.
I answered the phone, I wasstressed out by the call and my
hairdresser looked at me and shesaid oh wow, are you okay?
And I looked at her and I saidwhy.
She said you must be under alot of stress because you just

(04:00):
burst a blood vessel in your eyethat in that moment.
That was a huge wake up callfor me, because in the moment of
that conversation I wasfrustrated by it, but not at the
level to which I felt like Ididn't even feel that happen in
my eye, I didn't even feel it atall.
But my body responded in thatmoment.

(04:23):
Now that's just one of thethings that for me was like oh
my God, there's something goingon in my body.
But I also was at this pointwhere I was wondering if my
heart was going to stop in amoment's notice.
There were times where I calleda friend because my heartbeat
and my blood pressure like Icould literally feel it pounding

(04:44):
through my skin and my bloodpressure was so high and I was
scared.
I was scared at the time thatmy system was just going to shut
down and I was going to shutdown just altogether.
Now here's another interestingsyndrome.
I don't know if any of you haveheard of it, and maybe you have
or maybe you've experienced itPOTS syndrome, which stands for

(05:05):
postural orthostatic tachycardiasyndrome, aka POTS.
It affects the autonomicnervous system.
It can cause excessive increasein your heart rate when
standing up, symptoms ofdizziness or lightheadedness.
You can also have palpitations.
And when you have thesesymptoms, or, if you want to

(05:30):
call it this syndrome, pots, itrequires you to change your
lifestyle and for some people itactually could require meds.
And so during menopause this wassomething that I was diagnosed
with and as I share with you.
Earlier, my body began to gothrough a number of different
things.
There was mineral deficiency,potassium deficiency, I had

(05:55):
things going on with my thyroid.
I had things happening with myheart.
My thyroid was, you knowaspects of the symptoms going on
my thyroid, which was thenbeginning to attack my heart.
I had liver, kidney thingsgoing on.
There were all kinds of thingshappening when I went through,
when I went through menopause.
And you know somethinginteresting about POTS is it

(06:19):
occurs in one and three millionpeople person, one in 3 million
people, and the interestingthing is it's more commonly
found in women.
Get this from 15 to 50 years ofage.
That's right.
I said 15, as early as 15 yearsold to 50 years of age.
So I cured this.

(06:41):
I did cure the POTS syndromethat was moving through my body
and I did a number of things,but one of the things I did was
increasing my potassium.
I had a adrenal cocktail thatone of the nutritionists that I
was working with, that she hadgiven me a recipe which was
amazing I swear I did.
I did that immediately and mybody had probably I'm going to

(07:03):
say a 40 to 50% turnaround insymptoms.
Like I got better so quickly injust three days of taking that.
So potassium mineral intake wasstarting to add salt to my
coffee and salt to my diet andsea salt.
So I still do sea salt in mycoffee every morning, sea salt.

(07:25):
So I still do sea salt in mycoffee every morning and I make
a yummy coffee drink which it'stwo scoops of vanilla protein,
about a teaspoon of sea salt.
Sometimes I'll throw butter in,not always, but I'll put
cinnamon in.
Now I used to do coffee, coffee,but I no longer do caffeine and

(07:46):
so I do decaf coffee or I'lljust do dandy blend, which is a
chicory root type coffee, and Imix it all up but it tastes like
a caramel, a vanilla caramellatte, salted caramel latte, and
I love it.
So that's something I do.
But you know I had to increasemy potassium.
I had to, and then I oh, then II overdid it a little bit on my

(08:07):
potassium and started shootingup my, you know, the, the, the
potassium being too much startedthen causing me to have kidney
issues.
So, really, when you're, whenyou're working through these
things, you want to work withyour provider because you you
need to make sure that you'redoing everything properly.
But, amongst other things, as Imentioned, I was implementing

(08:27):
all kinds of things during thischapter of healing.
So and again I cannot stress,please, you know, what works for
one person may not be the thingthat works for others or for
you.
So be sure, as you startdabbling in various things, if
you're trying to heal your bodyor you're working I don't want

(08:48):
to say trying or you're workingto heal your body make sure
you're working with somebody,whether it's a nutritionist, a
nurse, practitioner, yourprovider, so that you're
monitoring and making sure thatyou're managing everything
effectively and efficiently,because everybody's body is
different, delicate andintricate and needs to be

(09:10):
managed properly so you'regetting the most effective
results.
Okay, and also maybe hopefullynot causing any other harm in
your body, because you neverknow, know and so, looking back,

(09:33):
so much of my own journeythrough that time was the impact
and result of years ofmismanagement of diet and
exercise and a lack of knowledgeand awareness of my whole body
system, not to mention and Ialready said this, but not to
mention I was also movingthrough menopause.
So, when talking about thewhole body system, what I'm

(09:59):
about to share is from thecontext of our current
conditioning here in the US.
So hold on, because it's you'll.
It just follow me along here,follow and then you'll.
You'll know what I'm talkingabout.
So often we're taught to look atour symptoms and we're taught

(10:22):
to look at our symptoms asseparate from one another and
then to take a pill for that onesymptom, not paying attention
to the fact that that onesymptom is actually the result
of another symptom.
That symptom is, is also aresult of yet another symptom.

(10:49):
Now, if you treat that firstsymptom, the original one we
were talking about, withoutaddressing the others, you're
surely going to damn the riverfor a little while right and put
a Band-Aid on it.
Yet that pill that you now take, that prescription medication,

(11:14):
it has side effects and ifyou're not aware of how that
medication metabolizes throughyour body, you could then be
causing new symptoms.
But let's get back to that rootsymptom.
New symptoms, but let's get backto that root symptom, the one

(11:35):
that we didn't even address theone that caused that initial
symptom that you took the pillfor.
How are those symptoms going?
Oh, you don't know, becauseyou're not even aware that it's
there, because that root symptomexpresses in a way that you

(11:55):
can't see or feel in your body.
So how's that going for you?
And, oh, by the way, now thatyou're taking that pill, are you
feeling better?
Are you really feeling betteror do you now have new symptoms
you're needing to manage?
And now you're trying to treatthose because they have a pill

(12:17):
for those too.
Okay, so, and that's goes onand on and on and on.
Right, does that sound like ourgood old system here in the US?
So your dam is going toeventually break because the
root symptom that is stillflowing and going unaddressed

(12:42):
and everything's now going tobleed out and cause all new
symptoms, and the pill or pillsyou are now taking are now
allowing other symptoms to arise.
This is how the average Americanlives their life, okay, and
we've almost lost complete sightof our whole body as a

(13:06):
symbiotic system.
Our whole body, it's thisbeautiful tapestry and woven
network of cells that are livingin harmony and community, and
we've been deeply conditioned todisregard this one pure fact of
our bodies and what they trulyare Our bodies are a living and

(13:28):
breathing organism that can domiraculous things.
I'm going to say that again.
Our bodies are a living andbreathing organism that can do
miraculous things, so much so is.
It can heal itself from justabout anything, but we have been
conditioned to believeotherwise.

(13:50):
So, as I began diving intounderstanding my body because of
all these symptoms right, allthese symptoms I was having that
I was experiencing, and I don'tknow if I shared this I don't
think I shared this yet.
I think I shared it in the.
It'll be in the episode comingbut I saw three different
nutritionalists.
I was working with my nursepractitioner.

(14:11):
I had two trainers at the timebecause I was going to a
CrossFit gym, a strengthtraining CrossFit gym Plus I was
using.
I was working with a dearfriend who's a trainer, kendi
Malat, who's actually in some ofthe previous episodes, where we
did some great interviews andtalked a lot about health and
wellness.
But I began diving intounderstanding my body because,

(14:35):
all of those symptoms that I wasexperiencing, I began to see my
body differently.
I was starting to see it aswhole and symbiotic in its
nature.
And how that was is you knowwhen I would get all the testing
that I did?
I'd go through all of this.
You know the results, thenrealizing, oh God, well, this

(14:58):
one thing is happening becausethis other thing is out of whack
.
And oh, and that's out of whackbecause this other piece is out
of whack, and now I have toactually work on this piece
before I can actually get thatpiece to go back to where it
needs to be.
So that was really the firsttime that I saw myself and my
body in that way, because I'vebeen so programmed over the

(15:22):
years and conditioned to focuson the one thing that may be
hurting.
Well, that one thing is hurtingbecause there's something else
going on behind it, okay, and soI would venture to say many of
you can relate to that.
So earlier I'd mentioned that Ihad to look at my body and my
lifestyle and I had to makechanges.
I absolutely had to makechanges to continue moving

(15:45):
through not only that process ofmenopause but really embracing
and accepting that, hey, I'm not25 anymore, my body is in its
50s, it's had a child and youknow it has years of impact, of
mismanagement, whether it wasfood, diet related, supplement
related, whatever.

(16:05):
Like I didn't take great careof my body when I was a young
person.
I was always healthy andsomewhat fit, but I, you know, I
can't say I ate all the bestfoods.
You know I was drinking sodas,all the things right, all this
stuff.
So during this journey thatI've been on this chapter of my
life, I've really had to take alook at what works, what doesn't

(16:28):
work.
Here are some things that I haveto live without.
I have to live without caffeine.
Caffeine is a kicker throughmenopause, through triple the
stress of my life with it, allthe things I have to manage.
Caffeine I had to cut out andit made a difference.
Alcohol I had to stop drinking,and so when I go out and have a

(16:51):
great time with my friends, Itypically don't drink, and if I
do drink, I choose to only haveone drink, because that one
drink I can fully feel in mybody.
The very next day.
I feel it that night.
I feel my whole body begin toshut down.
I feel my kidneys don't workwell, my liver doesn't like it.
Like I can literally feel theorgan system, my endocrine

(17:13):
system.
I can feel it because I am thatsensitive.
Now I feel the shift and thechange.
So I just pretty much took itout.
Now certain types of exercise Ihad to remove from my body.
I had to remove my strengthtraining CrossFit program
because it was too rough on mybody, because I become very

(17:34):
competitive in that space and Ido things that my body's not
ready to do and I think, oh, Ican lift that level of weight
and I can do that and I'mpushing myself and my body's
saying no, but I want to keep up.
I want to keep up with theclass.
So I had to change that.
Irregular sleep patterns, reallyhard on my body.
I didn't pay any attention tothat and what it was doing to my

(17:57):
adrenals.
Irregular eating habits, nothaving the proper amount of
protein, fats and carbs in themorning and burning the oil till
midday.
And then my body crashing inways where you know.
I learned that I was anemic.
I learned that not the happyway, not the great way, like on
the freeway and my body startingto have an anemic attack.

(18:19):
You know I had to cut sugar,sugar out.
Sugar started doing things tomy body.
Not only was it um, not onlyinflammation, but certain aches
and pains and arthritic types ofpains.
So those were things that I hadto begin to live without and or
at least lessen.
You know I'm not fullysugar-free, no, but I'm.
I probably eat 75% less theamount of sugar a day than I was

(18:44):
before.
So what are things that I'veI've had to put in and that I
savor and that I relish about mylife, that help my body be
stronger, that help my bodyrepair and restore faster?
And again, I mentioned this isabout becoming the expert of

(19:05):
your body and really tuning inand listening to your body.
You know what is your bodysaying.
I also want to, before I gointo this list here of what I do
, as I was working on the notesfor this podcast episode, it
dawned on me again just keephaving all these realizations.
You know, in the last episodewe're talking about the mind

(19:27):
being the garden and the heartbeing this beautiful bulb, right
, the seed of that garden.
And when you think about that,you know seeds need nurturing,
they need conditioning, theyneed love.
Right, when you put them in thesoil, you don't just throw them
in any kind of soil.

(19:47):
Typically, when you're plantinggarden, you like conditioned
soil, you know, depending onwhat kind of what kind of seeds
you're planting, you know you,there's certain soils and
there's also soils withnutrients, or soils with
fertilizers, or there's soilswith compost, right?
So you're trying to create theperfect bed for this seed.

(20:10):
Well, what's the perfect bedfor our mind, garden and our
bulb?
Our seed?
It's our body, right, it's thebody.
The body is this beautiful,conditioned community.
Well, we'll get into the cellsand the community of cells that
it is, but it's this beautifulspace, right.

(20:36):
So, again, and really, when Italk about, life is happening
for us, you know, and it's themind, is this beautiful, rich
place where you're creating andmanifesting.
But you want to be careful.
What you're manifesting, right,you want to clean out any pain,
sadness, trauma that you mayhave.
You want to remove these not sogreat conversations you may
have about yourself.
But this is where it all begins.
It all begins because we are asymbiotic system the mind, the

(21:00):
body, the spirit, the heart, allof it.
So, back to the things that Iwas putting in to my life,
implementing uninterrupted sleep.
I started sleeping more.
I had to use a cortisolsupplement for a while to even
out my cortisol.
Cortisol will createinterrupted sleep a lot, so I

(21:26):
had to get on a supplement tohelp with that.
I'm now finally at six hoursstraight which is awesome of
uninterrupted sleep and I'mworking to get towards seven and
eight.
Sometimes I hit seven andthat's like a huge thing.
It's like woo, get excited.
I also had to go towards a morebalanced macro diet.
Again, we have all these diets.

(21:48):
You have to figure out whatyour body needs and again, I
would say, work with anutritionist with that, because
it's really, really helpful tounderstand, based on where your
body's at.
When you figure out what's mybaseline today, when I'm not
feeling that good, what's mybaseline right now?
And then you have to look at.
You have to look at do I needmore calories?
Do I need more protein?

(22:08):
Do I need less carbs?
You know I had to figure outwhat was right for my body at
the time, right now, right now,my body thrives on something
more macro, where I have an evenportion of protein, fat and
carbs and it's all balanced andthat's what my body responds to
right now.
Regular exercise, minimum fourdays a week, minimum.
Have to have it for my mindsetand for my body.

(22:31):
Strength training superimportant.
Do it all the time, love it.
I love feeling stronger, butthat's what my body requires.
I do daily salt in my coffee,as I shared with you earlier.
I have to drink more than 63ounces a day of water.
That's important to stayhydrated for me.
A day of water.

(22:51):
That's important to stayhydrated for me.
I chose to do hormone therapyreplacement and there's some
really good books.
If you haven't read them, findthem.

I also incorporated dailymeditation and daily time just
to stop, breathe and just relaxinto my body and release that
stress.
So much stress, right, ladies,can you relate?

(23:33):
So much stress every day, somuch stress.
It's okay to just stop andbreathe.
So on the next show I'm excitedto bring, as I mentioned, my
nurse practitioner, megan Wempey.
She works at Trinity BalanceFamily Healthcare here in Texas.

She is amazing and I just loveher.
I've been working with her fornine years.
She helped me discover when Iwas pre-diabetic nine years ago
and other doctors could not findit.
You know she did particularworkups on me and was able to
target and figure out exactlywhat I needed to do, and within

(24:15):
two weeks I had shed 20 pounds,my A1C went down by four points
and I was really able to get mybody back on track.
And little did I know that Iwas heading down a path that I
didn't even.
I thought I ate good, I waseating healthy, I thought
everything was fine, but itwasn't.

(24:35):
So we'll discuss more in depthhealth and hormones and we're
going to dive into variousaspects of that menopausal
journey.
And today I just really wantedto share with you a little bit
of my experience.
And you know the journey I'vebeen on and I'm still on,
because it's a forever journey.

(24:56):
Right, your health andwellbeing is forever.
But topics we'll discuss on thenext show is when do you start
managing or being concernedabout hormones?
You know a lot of people think,oh, you don't have to worry
about it until you're older.
We're going to talk about thatbecause it's very important.
We're also going to talk aboutthe safety of hormone

(25:16):
replacement therapy.
I think a lot of people areafraid of it and I think if you
do your due diligence, do yourresearch and find out all the
options that are out there.
Don't be afraid of it.
There are a lot of good thingsthat Megan's going to talk about
that can really come fromhormone therapy Life with it and
life without it.
We're going to talk about thattoo, because there are some

(25:38):
people that choose not to gothat route.
They choose to really focus onmanaging and balancing their
hormones through diet, andabsolutely you can do that.
I believe you can do that.
I chose not to.
I chose to do the therapybecause I think my body was at
such a state that I needed helpright away.

(26:00):
Can I reverse all that and doit completely by food and diet?
Possibly, but right now I'm onthe journey of hormone
replacement therapy with food,diet and exercise.
I'm doing my best to stay offany medications for as long as I
can, because I do believe I canheal my body.
So, after hearing much of thisshow, I would really like to

(26:22):
hear from you.
You know what are you hearingfor yourself?
If your health journey has been, however, it's been hard, easy,
tough, strenuous, non-existent.
What is it Like?
Are there things relatable inwhat I've shared here?
Some of the symptoms maybe youknow.

(26:43):
Have you experienced POTS.
If not, is it something you'reexperiencing?
Hopefully not, but you know,take a look at that.
It might give you some insightfor some people.
And also, please share with mein the comments how did you
overcome any of the imbalancesor what is your journey

(27:04):
currently, today?
What are you doing right now totake charge and take action
within your health and wellbeing?
And are you the expert of yourbody or are you relying on
others to tell you what's goingon in your body?
So, when it comes to feelinggood, are you actually listening
of your body or are you relyingon others to tell you what's
going on in your body?
So, when it comes to feelinggood, are you actually listening
to your body?
Are you listening to it?

(27:24):
Are you seeing it as a wholesystem, or are you relating to
your body as separate?
It's separate from you, thesymptoms are separate from
another, or are you reallyseeing it that it's a whole
system, a whole system situationhere?

So, before I wrap up thisepisode, in the last episode I

had shared with you about themind garden right, the bulb is
the heart.
But I also discussed threethings to be aware of when
wanting to heal those aspects ofyour heart.
And in that episode I alsotalked about how I would share
with you how I move throughtrapped and stuck uncomfortable

(28:29):
emotions within my heart.
Now, as I discussed in the lastepisode, the three things that
I pay attention to, to be awareof, discussed in the last
episode, the three things that Ipay attention to, to be aware
of is when I'm in a situation ora conversation with somebody,
am I triggered?
And if I'm triggered, that's mywarning sign, that's my red

(28:54):
flag of there's an emotion inthere that needs to be handled.
There's some energy in therethat is sitting in there that
has nothing to do with thissituation and the root of that
situation, the root of that pain, is coming from somewhere and
it's just showing up in thisconversation because it's
unresolved.
So that's my first trigger.
I also, once I recognize that,I will sit in the emotion.

(29:16):
I recognize that I will sit inthe emotion.
Sometimes you can't do this inthe heat of the moment, right,
sometimes you can, but notalways.
But what I try to do is I tryto sit with it in that moment
and I breathe through it and Itry to release all story or
attachment to that emotion.
And then I like to ask my heartwhat do I need in this moment?

(29:39):
What do I need in this moment?
And then I try to fulfill onwhatever that need is.
It could be speaking up to thatperson, it could be doing
nothing, it could be cry.
It could be ask for a hug.
It could be get in your car,your car go drive.
It could be go sit out in thesun.
Whatever it is.

(30:00):
I ask my heart what it needsand I try to provide that for
myself in that moment.
Now I want to leave you withanother very cool tool and one
that I've been working withlately and a dear friend of mine
had reminded me because he toohad been working on some stuff
for himself and he reminded methat he had written a letter to

(30:20):
his mother, his mother's past.
But he's working through somestuff around his mom.
That reminded me, oh yeah, ohyeah, I could write letters
because I was working throughsome stuff with my dad, who was
also passed.
It's's like I could writeletters to him.
I could write a letter to himand I started that letter.

(30:40):
I fell asleep writing thatletter, which is classic, but
I've done a lot of work on itand I think I'm actually.
I do feel it's complete thething that I was working on
there.
It's complete.
I feel the forgiveness from myfather and me to him and him to
me.
But journaling or writingletters is really a great way to

(31:02):
process out that emotion andyou can write as many letters as
you may need.
And then what I also like to dois put it in a God box.
Put it in a God box If youdon't have a God box.
You know, years ago I used togo to Al-Anon and my sponsor at
the time taught me to create aGod box in the top of the God

(31:24):
box.
It's like a cute little box.
I went to the dollar store,bought like a little box, you
know, like a box you wrap thingsin, and it was sparkly.
It's like sparkly and red.
And I cut a little top likesparkly and red and I cut a
little slit in the top and Itaped the top on and when I

(31:44):
would have frustration and angeror sadness or fear, I would
scribble it down on a postingnote, fold it up and I'd stick
it in the God box and the ideaof that is, when you hand it
over to God, it relieves you ofthat pain and that pressure, and
that became like a ritual forme and that shit works Okay.
So I want to leave you withthat tool journal about it.

(32:06):
Burn it, burn the, burn thejournal or if the once you fill
it, you know, burn the letter,put it in a God box.
Whatever you need to do, writeit out Something I will say also
that I had been working on formyself in the last few weeks
around this stuff with my fatherand some stuff that I've been,
you know, really moving throughin terms of avoidant and anxious

(32:32):
attachments, because I have myown stuff going on that's very
much triggered from a situationwith my father when I was a
young person, and not only myfather but my grandfather and my
mother.
So all those three of thoserelationships, I had a huge
revelation and aha, this weekthat those three relationships
were relationships that were notsafe for me on many levels, and

(32:56):
there was one person who wasreally safe.
But, as a result, there aresome behaviors and patterns that
I'm working through in the areaof my romantic relationships
and so you know this week whenthings would come up, I would
write it down, I would write itdown on my notes and then I
would collapse it out of mysystem.

(33:18):
So that's something that I dothrough body regeneration method
, which, if those of you arelooking for some healing, some

I do one hour sessions withpeople energetically and I can
work with removing blocks ofenergy and stuck energy in your
system and we can work throughpain and things of that nature.

But that's what I've been doingis pulling up these energies
out of my heart, pulling them upout of my spiritual, etheric
space, my orc field, however youwant to call that, and
collapsing it out and thenrefilling it with whatever is
needed and required at that time.
So that's another way that I dowork in healing my heart and
