S1. Ep21. Understanding Dementia: What It Is and What We Can Do About It - Dr Nikki-Ann Wilson NeuRA Dementia Studies
According to recent statistics from Dementia Australia, dementia is the second leading cause of death in Australia, and there are currently over 400,000 Australians living with the condition. With such alarming figures, it's understandable that many people fear developing dementia, especially those over 55.
To help us understand this complex condition, we're joined by Dr. Nikki-Anne Wilson, a Postdoctoral Research Fellow in Cognitive Health and Dementia at Neuroscience Research Australia. In this episode, Dr. Wilson explains what dementia is, the different types of dementia, its causes, and how it differs from normal age-related memory loss. She also provides insights into how family members can support those who have dementia when they display particular behaviors and when to seek help and support. Finally, Dr. Wilson shares the latest breakthroughs in medical research and treatments for dementia.
