Welcome to "It Might Get Weird," the podcast where we dive into the journeys of veterinary professionals. Your hosts are Dr. Gary Marshall and Sara Rae. Gary has been a veterinarian for more than 35 years. Sara has been a veterinarian for zero years. That's about to change and that's why we're here. Our main focus will be to follow Sara on adventures as a Washington State University class of 2028 veterinary student. We’ll be along for the ride as she encounters challenges, and celebrates triumphs during her 4 year commitment to become a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine. Along the way, we’ll also interview super interesting individuals who have valuable stories to share about their personal and professional journeys.

If you haven't listened to S2 : E3 (Part 1) with Dr. Whitney Terrell yet, please bookmark this episode and go listen to that one first. The 2 episodes are pretty self-contained, but this is a continuation of the conversation we had and probably best to listen to the entire discussion from beginning to end.
We cover Alabama Football, the experience of studying overseas in Irel...

Sara and I are together on this one to talk with the wonderful Dr. Whitney Terell ( @dr.terrellpetvet ). We talked so long, that we didn't even get close to wrapping this up in 1 episode. During this episode we mainly cover her passion for the Enneagram, and her experience applying to, getting in to, and attending Vet School in Dublin, Ireland. University College Dublin Schoo...

Gary shares most of his summer activities. Not as exciting as Sara's. It gives a good perspective on his AVMA summer duties. Gary and Sara also talk about some unique aspects of the Washington State University College of Veterinary Medicine second year curriculum.
We apologize for a few technical difficulties. The audio is fine, but not the level we desire. We strive to impro...

Thank you for being so patient for the first episode of Season 2 of It Might Get Weird: The Podcast. Sara's second year of vet school is starting, but first... summer was jam packed and we want to tell you all about it. There was so much going on, that we could only fit Sara's summer into this episode. She worked hard, visited several states, and even had a couple foreig...

I know we said we were taking a break for summer, but the opportunity came up to have Dr. Molly Brinkman, Dr. Tannetje Crocker and I record together to talk about our upcoming panel talk together at AVMA Convention this summer in Washington DC (Saturday July 19th at 4:00pm). Our talk is titled: "What I know now that I wish I knew then: Wisdom for students and early career vet...

Unfortunately Sara was unavailable for recording this week. Fortunately, Gary was able to secure an amazing guest while he was at the AAVMC Catalyze Conference in Washington DC. This week he interviews Dr. Laci Taylor a current Zoo Medicine Resident at The Smithsonian's National Zoo. Gary wanted so much to learn about all the exciting things that Dr. Taylor is doing during he...

If you only have time to listen to one recent episode, this would be a good choice. Sara and Gary got together in person to record this while Gary visited WSU's College of Veterinary Medicine in his role as AVMA Vice President, and to deliver a presentation about one of his most impactful mentors, Dr. Leo K. Bustad, to the Humane Animal Bond Club. It was a great opportunity f...

After Gary was in Davis California to attend SAVMA Symposium, he took a little detour to Folsom California to visit his friends Alysson and Dr. Marcus Dela Cruz, and to finally meet their dog Charlie (a good boye) in person for the first time. They were so gracious to let Gary stay with them, and to record this impromptu interview while there young son was napping. Their story of ...

Sara and Gary hadn't talked in a while. They get a bit caught up and share what's been going on. They start out in a bit of a dull mood, but pick up a bit by the end. These times and conversations are all part of the journey that is Vet School and/or a Vet Career. Thanks for listening.

This should probably be titled, "Wait... You did what?" episode. Or the "Gary seems shell-shocked". Gary is definitely not on his A-game here. It's probably because he had never met his amazing guest Nurse Practioner Lauren Cabrera before he hit the record button for his interview. It could have been because Sara wasn't present this time either. Sara ...

Gary shares his struggles with making medical decisions for his own cat Millie. That's the very sad part. This decision making crisis overlapped with the disappointment and frustration over a decision made by the new administration. Sara helps brings things back into a better place by steering the conversation toward what they both look forward to in the near future. Thanks f...

As Sara settles into second semester of her first year of vet school at Washington State University, she's in a good position to tell us how she really feels about it. There's some good mixed in with the ramped up coursework. Gary and Sara also randomly talk quite about about Chewy Vet and where they've been and where they're going. Thanks for listening.
