Speaker 1 (00:00):
Welcome to it's a
Single Mom Thing, the show for
single moms by single moms.
This is Sherri, your host, andI am happy you are here today.
Remember it's a single momthing and not the single thing
that stops you.
Speaker 2 (00:16):
Ever felt like life
is throwing you a curveball?
No, scratch that.
Curveballs, fastballs, slidersand a few unexpected sucker
punches.
Yeah, me too.
One minute you think you've gota plan and then boom, shakalaka
, life drops you to your knees,full-on freak out mode activated
(00:38):
, whether it's the unexpectedbill, the job that fell through
the unexpected bill, the jobthat fell through the
quote-unquote we need to talktext that turns your stomach, or
the late night overthinkingthat steals your peace.
But what if we flipped thescript?
What if, instead of freakingout, we leaned into faith?
(01:00):
Today, girls, we're going totalk about how to stand firm in
faith when life feels certainlyuncertain.
So take a deep breath, get yourjournal out and let's get busy.
God's got this and you don't.
Thanks for coming back andjoining me in another episode of
it's a Single Mom Thing.
(01:22):
So first we're going to talkabout the facts of freak out
moments.
You see, life has a way ofsneaking up on us, doesn't it?
One minute you're cruisingthrough your day and the next
you're blindsided by anunexpected bill, a tough
conversation or that gut wrenchfeeling.
What now?
Us single mamas are no strangerto this feeling, am I right?
(01:46):
So okay, as ladies of faith, here is a little fact about
faith.
Faith doesn't mean you won'tpanic.
It means you don't have to staythere unless you really want to
.
So let's be real.
Uncertainty is a huge triggerfor all of us, single or not.
(02:06):
The bank account that's lowerthan expected, the co-parent
that is making life harder thanit has to be, the kids are
acting up and you feel likeyou're failing.
You're exhausted, overworkedand overwhelmed.
If you're breathing, you'regoing to face uncertainty from
now to eternity.
(02:27):
The question isn't if, but howyou respond.
You see you have aresponsibility here and well,
your response is yourresponsibility.
Do you let it consume you or doyou hand it over to the one who
already holds your future?
Now listen, if I'm being totallyhonest with you, I don't always
(02:50):
go to the one who holds myfuture, because I'm usually too
busy holding my breath.
You know what I mean.
You know how this goes, becausewe are single moms holding our
family together and there's noone there to hold us up.
We are single moms holding ourfamily together and there's no
one there to hold us up.
But really, what I know andwhat you know, I'm guessing is
that that all is a lie.
(03:10):
So let's untie that lie andunpack some biblical truth here
and we're going to flip our bookand our script to Philippians 4
, 6 through 7.
And I quote you know this versedo not be anxious about anything
, but in every situation, byprayer and petition, with
thanksgiving, present yourrequests to God, and the peace
(03:33):
of God, which transcends allunderstanding, will guard your
hearts and your mind in JesusChrist, your mind in Jesus
Christ.
Truth here, the truth is isthat anxiety?
Well, it's an alarm, but faith, yeah, that's the answer.
Said differently, anxietybrings awareness that something
(03:55):
is not right.
God is the one that will makethings right and that's where
your faith should be.
And let me just remind youthat's according to his will and
purpose on how that plays out.
So let's have some fun with alittle freak out verse faith
mode to get a little moreclarity on how this goes down.
(04:15):
Freak out mode overthinkingsleepless nights, trying to
control the outcome, lettingfear drive your decisions.
Faith mode Handing it to God,choosing peace over panic,
trusting that he is working evenwhen you can't see it.
Freak out mode Feelingparalyzed by the unknown,
(04:37):
avoiding decisions, spiralinginto the worst case scenarios,
while faith mode would have youmoving forward with courage,
making decisions in wisdom, trusting that God is the one
ordering your steps.
Now let's do another littlefreak out mode, and that might
(04:58):
be letting emotions dictate yourreactions, snapping at your
kids, letting frustration stealyour joy.
But if you flipped it over tofaith mode, you'd be responding
with grace, pausing to praybefore reacting, letting God's
peace guide your words andactions.
Do you see and feel thedifference between the two?
You see, worrying.
(05:19):
Well, it's kind of like arocking chair it gives you
something to do, but it won'ttake you anywhere.
Faith, now, that moves mountains.
So let's park that thought inour first journal prompt.
Okay, girl, get your gear out.
At the top of the page, I wantyou to write what's the number
(05:40):
one thing causing me stressright now, and then, followed by
what would it look like torelease it to God instead of
holding onto it?
Press, pause for the cause, andthen come back to the podcast
when you're done.
Okay, welcome back.
Okay, up next, my sisters, weneed to get real on while faith
(06:02):
is your anchor in the storm, orat least when the waters get a
little choppy.
You see, faith isn't aboutpretending everything is fine.
And what's the acronym for fine?
Frustrated, insecure, neuroticand emotional, implying that
when someone says, oh, I'm fine, they might not actually be
feeling okay and are just usinga generic response to avoid
(06:25):
discussing deeper feelingsInstead of faith, which the
acronym for that would be firmassurance in the highest.
You see, faith's about knowingwho is in control even when
things aren't so.
If you've been spinning aroundin Christian circles for a while
, you are no stranger to hearingfaith being referred to like an
(06:46):
anchor in the storm.
And well, here's what we knowabout anchors.
Anchors, they don't stop thestorms, the waves they will
still come.
But anchors do keep you steady.
Without one, you will driftwherever the storm takes you.
Without faith, life's chaos canpull you under.
(07:07):
So here's a little exampleripped from the pages of Matthew
, chapter 14, 29 through 31.
And it's a Peter walking onwater.
You see, peter walked on thewaves when he kept his eyes on
Jesus.
Now, the second he looked atthe storm.
You know he sank.
So what's the lesson here?
The storm isn't the problem,it's where you fix your eyes.
(07:32):
That is Now.
I don't know about you, but Ithink it's pretty natural to put
our head down when life gets usdown.
But I think the challenge is tolive right side up and do
something supernatural.
So let's feel this one out abit Faith in the storm versus
(07:52):
fear in the storm, and this isgoing to go for both moms and
kids.
Fear says the wind is toostrong, I'm going under.
But faith says my God is biggerthan this storm.
And here's a little kid versionI can't do this math problem.
I'll never get it.
But a faith response would beGod made my brain strong, I'll
(08:15):
keep trying and he'll help me.
Here's another scenario wherefear says I have to handle this
on my own, but faith says I canrest because he's got me.
And let's go to a little kidversion here.
No one at school likes me.
I have to figure this out alone.
Now here's a little faithresponse that you could teach
(08:37):
them, and that's God is alwayswith me.
I can pray and ask for him tobring me the right friends.
Here's another scenario Fearsays what if this doesn't work
out?
But faith says even if I don'tsee it now, god is working for
my good.
And here's something that youcould do with your kids to teach
(08:57):
them.
Here's a kid's version of fearwhat if I don't make the team?
But what if you taught them thefaith response that God has a
plan for me, no matter whathappens.
Listen, ladies.
If your peace is shaken everytime the storm rolls in, maybe
it's time to check what youranchor is actually tied to.
(09:19):
Let's take this one stepfurther and even look to the one
who best walked out his faithfor us.
Jesus could have totallyfreaked out too.
You know that right, but hedidn't.
Jesus faced unbelievablepressure, betrayal and
life-threatening situations, buthe never let fear take over
(09:41):
Instead.
Here are some examples of whathe did, Examples of how Jesus
handled pressure instead offreaking out.
And we find it in Mark 4, 35through 41, where he calmed the
storm While the disciplespanicked.
Jesus well, he slept throughthe storm and then rebuked the
winds and waves.
He had a little faith over somefreak out.
(10:08):
How about in Matthew, chapter14, verses 13 through 21, where
he fed the 5,000.
Instead of stressing over lack,he trusted his father's
provision and turned five loavesand two fish into more than
enough, for he knew that faithprovides.
And then let's go to Luke,chapter 22, verses 39 through 46
.
And that's facing the cross.
(10:30):
Jesus prayed in the garden ofGethsemane, sweating blood, but
surrendered to God's willinstead of trying to escape.
You see, faith also submits.
And then, finally, in John, chapter 19, verses 8 through 11,
where he stood before Pilate.
When accused and sentenced,Jesus remained silent because he
(10:53):
knew God was in control of theoutcome.
You see, faith stands firm ofthe outcome.
You see, faith stands firm IfJesus, in the face of betrayal,
danger and death, could remaincalm and trust God, how much
more should we lean on him whenour world feels uncertain?
And listen, ladies, thisdoesn't mean this has to be
(11:15):
perfect.
You're looking for progresshere.
So how to strengthen your faithin the middle of uncertainty?
Number one pray first, not last, Before running to panic.
Run to prayer.
Number two speak truth overfear.
Declare God's promises over thesituation.
(11:36):
Number three look back to moveforward, reminding yourself of
every time he came throughbefore for you.
Number four surround yourselfwith faith-filled people.
Fear grows in isolation, butfaith grows in community, my
(11:56):
sister.
So here's a little scripturedrop, and we find it in Isaiah
41 10.
Do not fear, for I am with you.
Do not be dismayed, for I amyour God.
I will strengthen you and helpyou.
I will uphold you with myrighteous right hand.
(12:16):
How many times did he say I inthat statement?
Four, and how many times in thestatement did he say you, yeah,
that's none.
So let's move on to this journalprompt.
What storm am I facing rightnow and how can I anchor myself
(12:37):
in faith instead of fear?
To the one who is going touphold you, Turning panic into
peace?
Practical steps.
You see, faith isn't just achurch thing.
It's a daily, moment by momentchoice when life gets messy.
Here's how you can stop thepanic spiral and step into peace
(12:58):
and we're going to cover inthis next thing.
And if you got your pen andpaper handy, you might want to
write these down.
These are practical faithbuilders.
Number one pause and pray Beforeyou react.
Take a deep breath and talk toGod.
First, Said differently go tohis throne before you pick up
the phone, sister.
Number two flip the fear.
(13:21):
Instead of asking what ifeverything goes wrong, Ask what
if God works this out?
That's a mic, drop right there.
Number three find your faithverse.
Pick one, just one scripture tospeak over your situation.
For example, Isaiah 41 10.
(13:41):
Fear not, for I am with you.
Say it and spray it on apost-it note all over your home
and wherever you roam, girl, until it becomes your mantra.
And number four write a andthis is quote unquote God's got
this list Every time that he hascome through in the past and
every time that he is going tocome through in your future.
(14:03):
Write it down.
Your faith, you see, it willgrow as you see, proof of his
faithfulness.
And number five phone a faithfriend and listen.
This is number five, not step.
Number one so call someone whoyou know will pray for you, not
just panic with you, you willkeep in perfect peace those
(14:27):
whose minds are steadfastbecause they trust in you, and
that's from Isaiah 26.3.
You see, my sisters, there ispower in his word, right there
for you, available in the midstof your next freak out.
So for our last journal promptof the podcast, I want you to
write at the top of the pagewhat is one practical step I can
(14:49):
take today to shift from panicto peace.
So, as I close, remember mamas.
Life will always throw curveballs, but here's the truth you
don't have to swing at every one.
When uncertainty knocks, letfaith answer the door.
Trusting God doesn't mean youwon't feel fear.
It means you choose to believehe's bigger than what you're
(15:12):
facing.
And remember, you are settingthe tone for your home.
Your kids are watching how youact and react.
If they see you constantly inpanic mode, they'll learn to
live in fear.
But if they see you leaninginto faith, trusting God in the
hard moments, they will grow upknowing that their peace isn't
(15:33):
based on circumstances, it'sbased on Christ.
You see, faith, my sisters, isthe greatest gift you can give
your children.
Teach them that faith isn'tjust for church on Sundays.
It's for the unexpected bills, the broken hearts, the job
losses and the everydaystruggles of life.
You are their first example ofwhat trusting God looks like,
(15:58):
just like Jesus is for you.
So let's do a little recap andwalk out some action steps.
Number one recognize the freakout moments, but don't stay
there, sister.
Two let faith be your anchor, not fear.
Three choose one practical stepto shift from panic to peace
(16:19):
today.
And four show your kids whatfaith and action looks like.
Ladies, your faith isn't justfor you, it's for the next
generation watching you.
So let them see a woman whotrusts God no matter what,
Because when you walk in faith, you teach them how to walk out
theirs too.
So before we go, I have a fewcall to actions to leave with
(16:43):
you.
