Speaker 1 (00:00):
Welcome to it's a
Single Mom Thing, the show for
single moms by single moms.
This is Sherri, your host, andI am happy you are here today.
Remember it's a single momthing and not the single thing
that stops you.
So welcome back my fellow solopeeps to another episode of it's
(00:22):
a Single Mom Thing.
So I have a question for youwhen was the last time you did
something for you and youactually took the time to enjoy
it?
I know scrolling social mediawhile your kids nap that doesn't
count.
I know the drill You'rejuggling all the things like a
(00:42):
circus act and while self-carefeels like an act you can't
afford.
But today I'm going to proveotherwise.
You see, self-care is essentialand it doesn't have to cost a
dime.
Because, listen, in mycheckbook, self-care isn't
selfish, it's survival with aside of sass.
(01:02):
So picture this You'rescrolling Instagram, sipping
your third reheated cup ofcoffee and seeing influencers
post about their $200 spa day.
Meanwhile, you're just tryingto find time to shower without
interruptions.
Sound familiar?
I know that's right.
Well, listen, I'm here to flipthe script on that, because
(01:24):
self-care isn't about the pricetag.
It's about what it's costingyou if you don't do it.
It's about what fills your souland your empty cup.
As a solo, you need your soulfilled so you can feed those who
depend on you showing up.
So in this episode, we willredefine self-care, share
(01:44):
creative, budget-friendly ideasand even toss in some fun
activities you can do with yourkids to get them involved.
And, as always, you can counton your girl to have a few sassy
surprises up her sleeve to makethis journey as joyful and as
practical as it can be.
Practical as it can be.
(02:06):
So my promise is, by the end ofthis episode, you'll have a
fresh perspective on whatself-care looks like.
Actionable tips to refill yourcup and a simple journal
exercise to make it stick.
And, who knows, you just mightdiscover a new way to reset your
mind and recharge your spiritthat you never saw coming the
real price tag of ignoringself-care.
(02:26):
All right, let's get real for afew seconds.
We all know self-care isn'tjust spa days and candles, but
do you know what it's actuallycosting you to skip it?
Here's a spoiler alert it's waymore than the price of a
manicure.
Let's talk about the price tagthat comes with ignoring
self-care and trust me, mama,it's steep.
(02:48):
So listen, when you don't takecare of yourself, you're paying
for it in ways you might noteven realize, and I'm here to
break that down with you here.
Let's talk about at work.
Burnout, lack of focus anddecreased productivity can
impact your performance and evenyour job security.
Think about it.
How can you slay all day atwork if you're running on empty?
(03:11):
How about with your kids?
Short tempers and exhaustioncan rob you of precious moments
with your children.
You can't pour love andpatience in your kids when your
cup is bone dry and it shows upin your finances as in the form
of health issues from stress andexhaustion, which can lead to
costly medical bills.
(03:31):
Skipping self-care now couldmean paying a big price for it
later, mama.
And here's another area whereit's going to cost you, and
that's keeping the peace withthe other co-parent.
You see stress and emotionalfatigue.
Well, that will make it harderfor you to navigate co-parenting
with grace and boundaries.
Listen, mamas, the drama isn'tworth it.
(03:53):
Invest in your peace of mind soyou don't fall to pieces with
the other parent.
And here's an area I'm sure youhave not thought about your
dreams Neglecting self-care.
Well, that can leave you toodrained to chase your goals and
live out God's purpose for yourlife.
You know God has big plans foryou, but you can't step into
(04:15):
them if you're stuck in survivalmode.
And lastly, it'll show up inyour health and your
relationship with God.
Stress and burnout can distanceyou from both physical
well-being and spiritualconnection.
So listen, mama.
God's not calling you to runyourself into the ground.
He's calling you to rest in him.
(04:36):
So if you have it handy, youneed to pull out your Thrive in
25 journal, because I have alittle prompt for you.
So in your journal, I want youto write down what is it costing
me to skip self-care?
Now you need to be honest andreflect on how it's impacting
your work, family finances, health and your dreams.
(04:57):
From my own experience, sometimes singing on paper was a
wake-up call that I just needed.
So listen.
You know they say you can'tpour from an empty cup.
Well, mama, if you don't refillthat cup soon, you might just
end up trying to drink from asippy cup instead.
Budget-friendly self-care ideaswith fierce faith and some sass
(05:21):
Okay.
So let's get real.
Self-care isn't about blowingyour budget or squeezing
yourself into someone else'sInstagram-worthy version of rest
.
We're flipping the script onthat.
It's about finding what fillsyour soul and doing it
unapologetically.
So let's dive into somebudget-friendly ways to refill
(05:41):
your cup and then throwing insome fierce faith vibes to keep
you grounded while you're doingit.
Number one mommy masks andmimosas or juice boxes.
I'm talking a spa night withoutthe price tag, and here's what
that might involve DYI facialswith oatmeal honey or whatever
(06:02):
you have in the pantry.
Involve DYI facials withoatmeal honey or whatever you
have in the pantry.
Epsom salt baths with essentialoils or even a few drops of
vanilla extract for a spa-likesense.
Now we can also 10x thatexperience, too, by getting the
kids involved.
The kids, I know, but listen.
Their stress is your stress, solet's flip their script to into
(06:24):
a Monday mask night.
That can be your new thingFunny pics, silly faces and a
post-worthy moment to share withother moms.
Who says self-care can't be afamily affair?
Number two sweat, sand andsanity.
Outdoor fun that saves yoursoul.
Take a walk, sit in the park orwatch a sunset, but why stop
(06:45):
there?
Invite your mom crew and kidsfor a kick it kickball game or
see who can build the most solidsandcastle at the beach.
You see, sometimes the bestself-care comes with a little
sweat and a lot of laughs.
God gave us this big, beautifulworld.
Go enjoy it.
Number three doodle, decorate orDIY your way to sanity.
(07:07):
Creativity that heals your soul.
Try journaling, doodling orpicking up a new hobby like
crochet or DIY home decor.
Challenge yourself withsomething new.
Learn to watercolor, bake breadfrom scratch and invite the
kids to be your taste testers.
You see, creativity is apowerful way to quiet the noise
(07:28):
and reconnect with the personGod made you to be.
Plus, who doesn't love some funor a new skill to show off?
Number four fill your soul byfilling someone else's plate the
selfless self-care hack.
Cook a meal for a friend, aneighbor or someone in your
church.
Volunteer at a local charity orsend an encouraging note to
(07:49):
another single mom.
You see, here's the thing aboutserving others.
It fills your soul in ways youcan't even imagine.
When you're pouring into others, god is pouring right back into
you Mic drop.
And number five digital detox.
Log off and level up.
Commit to a seven-day socialmedia, fast and reclaim your
(08:13):
peace.
And yes, girl, you can do it,it's just seven days.
Replace scrolling withsoul-filling activities like
reading, journaling or spendingquality time with your kids.
Mama, because your mind needs abreak and God's got better
notifications waiting for you.
Oops, I forgot, I had anotherone in my bag of tricks, so
(08:36):
we're moving on to number fivePause, pray and slay finding
your calm in the chaos.
Try the Abide app.
That's A-B-I-D-E for guidedChristian meditation and prayer.
How about create a prayer jar?
Write down family and friends'prayer requests as you learn
about them, then pull one outeach day to focus on in prayer.
(08:58):
You see, prayer isn't just aritual.
It's your direct line to God,and when you lift others up,
you'll find he's lifting you uptoo.
Plus, isn't it time to giveyour worries the boot and let
God handle the heavy lifting?
So practice mindfulness bysimply sitting still, closing
your eyes and letting gratitudeflood your heart for 60 seconds,
(09:20):
criss-cross applesauce.
So listen, mamas, a pause in thechaos doesn't mean you're
giving up.
It means you're gearing up,with God by your side.
So even if you don't have adime, you do have some time.
I know that.
So self-care doesn't have to befancy, expensive or
time-consuming.
(09:41):
It's about finding those small,soul-filling moments that
remind you of the fierce,faith-filled woman you are.
So now let's make it happen,making self-care non-negotiable.
Fierce faith and fierce focus.
So here's the truth, my fellowsolos.
Self-care isn't just somethingyou fit in when you have time,
(10:03):
it's something to protect, likeyour peace, because, let's be
honest, they go hand in hand.
So let's talk about how to makeself-care a lifestyle that even
your busiest days can't derail.
Number one start small and stayconsistent, and I'm talking
about committing five to 10minutes.
That's it a part of your dayfor you.
(10:25):
Rome wasn't built in a day, andneither is self-care habits
either.
But consistency, this is wherethe miracles happen.
Number two schedule it like aVIP meeting.
I'm talking about blockingself-care time in your calendar
and treat it like anon-negotiable appointment.
You see, if you can scheduledentist appointments and teacher
(10:47):
conferences, oh yes, you canschedule time for your mental
health, no excuses.
Number three model it for yourkids.
Teach your kids the value ofself-care by showing them how
it's done.
Now, ladies, you know, when youtake care of yourself, you're
giving your kids permission toprioritize their well-being too.
(11:08):
Number four phone a friend, askfor help from your mom, tribe,
family or friends when you needa little break.
It takes a village, and yourvillage is there to help, but
only if you let them.
Number five infuse self-carewith faith.
Begin your self-care time witha simple prayer like Lord, renew
(11:29):
my strength so I can pour intoothers.
You see, when you invite Godinto your rest, it becomes
restoration.
This is where your cup willbegin to overflow.
So, listen, skipping self-care,well, it's like ignoring the
check engine light in your car.
Sure, you can keep driving I'vedone it but don't be surprised
(11:50):
when something breaks down.
I've been stranded.
So let's shift gears and endtoday with an exercise to help
you prioritize you, and here'swhere we're going to close, and
it's with an interactive journalexercise called Make it Stick.
So listen, mamas, now it's timeto turn all this self-care talk
(12:10):
into action.
Get that Thriving 25 journalout, if you haven't done so
already.
Remembering, it's more than anotebook.
It is your playbook forthriving, not just surviving.
So let's build out your selfcare roadmap.
Step one reflect.
Now, at the top, I want you totitle a page called what Drains
(12:33):
Me vs what Fills Me.
On the left side, jot downthings that drain your energy,
for example, late nights,overcommitting, constant
scrolling, volunteering way toomuch.
Then, on the right side, writedown what truly fills your soul,
for example, quiet time, creative outlets, meaningful
(12:54):
conversations.
You see, this will help youidentify where your energy leaks
are and how to refill your tank.
Then step two plan.
Okay, so you are going tocreate a weekly self-care
schedule and then you're goingto start off with a daily, and
that might be writing down onesmall thing you can do each day,
(13:16):
and that's, let's say, fiveminutes of prayer, a quick walk
or a gratitude list Weekly.
I want you to pick one biggeractivity to look forward to,
like a spa night, a park outingor a catch-up coffee with a
friend, but then now we're goingto 10X it to the monthly friend
(13:37):
, but then now we're going to10X it to the monthly.
And I want you to choose onething that feels like a treat,
whether it's a day trip, acreative project or a mom's
night out.
You see, planning self-careisn't selfish, it's smart, and
writing it down makes you morelikely to actually do it.
So, number three I want you todeclare it, write a self-care
(13:58):
affirmation declaration at thetop of the page, something like
I'm worth the time and effort tocare for myself, because when I
thrive, my family thrives, andthen I want you to post it
somewhere you can see it yourmirror, your fridge, or even as
your phone lock screen.
Listen, if you even have to goas far as writing it in lipstick
(14:19):
on your mirror.
If that's what it takes to getyou to stick to it, then you
need to go for it.
Number four pray it forward.
End the page with a prayer likeLord, help me honor the body,
mind and spirit you've given meby prioritizing rest.
Honor the body, mind and spirityou've given me by prioritizing
rest, renewal and connectionwith you, because listen, girls,
(14:40):
when you make room for him, hemultiplies your strength.
All right, ladies.
So listen, here's the truth.
Self-care isn't a luxury We'vetalked about that.
It's a necessity.
It's the fuel in your tank, thelight in your soul and the key
to showing up for your familyand for God's calling in your
life.
And listen, you're going tohear this reminder in every
(15:02):
podcast, because it's important.
You aren't just surviving, youare thriving in 25.
He is your strength and yourown fierce determination.
So, as you go into this week, remember this you're worth the
time, the care and the effort.
When you fill your cup, youdon't just pour into others, you
(15:22):
overflow into their lives withlove, peace and purpose.
And that, ladies, is the kindof ripple effect this world
needs.
