This episode ties together this country’s history of racism with its history of incarceration and recounts three important junctures in the history of prisons through the lens of America’s troubled and complex history of racial oppression. The prison industrial complex is a continuation or renaming of racial injustices and practices within our criminal justice system that exploited the lives of incarcerated citizens. This evolved out of laws such as Black Codes, Pigs Laws, and Vagrant Laws which led to the practice of convict leasing. It was later that the same practice was renamed into what we now refer to as the prison industrial complex.
