“It’s the witch from next door!” We take a trip to the theater to discuss the iconic filmed production of Stephen Sondheim’s Into the Woods, which was recorded for PBS American Playhouse in 1989. Many people hold the music from Into the Woods dear, and we are fortunate that its original cast was recorded in the spring of 1989. This Fractured Fairy Tales narrative revolves around a childless baker and his wife, who embark on a quest to start a family after a witch places a curse on them. Little Red Riding Hood, Cinderella, Jack and the Beanstalk, and a Rapunzel origin story are interwoven throughout the story. Bernadette Peters embodies the Witch with unparalleled talent, delivering a captivating performance in every moment. Joanna Gleason, in her Tony Award-winning role portrays the Baker’s Wife with incredible grace and depth.
