It measured 6.9 on the moment magnitude scale and caused widespread devastation, particularly in Kobe and its surrounding areas. The quake resulted in the loss of over 6,000 lives, injured tens of thousands, and left hundreds of thousands homeless. Major infrastructure, including buildings, highways, and railways, was severely damaged, and fires broke out in the aftermath. The disaster highlighted the need for improved earthquake preparedness and led to changes in Japan's seismic safety measures. Its impact remains a poignant reminder of the power of nature and the resilience of communities.
In the aftermath, Habatan was created, a local mascot character, representing resilience and recovery, Habatan is designed as a bright yellow phoenix, symbolizing the region's recovery from the Great Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake. Habatan has become a beloved figure, promoting local pride and Hyogo's unique characteristics
