(00:00):
Just go whatever you want.
(00:01):
All right.
Hi, this is Ted.
Today we have a special, what do I want to say?
A special segment, I guess, on Jibe Talking.
We are here at the Mills Trophy Race, or is it Friends of the Mills?
Is that what the actual title is?
We are on location.
Oh, that's right.
On location.
We are on location.
(00:21):
Well, introduce yourself.
This is Christina Columbus, and we are on location.
And who do we have here?
You got a mic, so you don't have to talk into this.
Norm Adair.
I'm the rear Commodore here at TYC.
Rear Commodore.
Does that mean eventually you'll be the Commodore?
It means eventually I'll be the Commodore.
Unless they get mad at you?
Unless they get mad at me, kick me out, or they don't vote me in, or something silly like that.
(00:45):
But you know, there's only a few people dumb enough to take on the Commodore job because of how busy it is anyways.
Right.
Right?
No, I just...
But we are here at the historic Toledo Yacht Club, and I say this seriously.
This is a beautiful building.
Do you know how old is this building?
Do you know everything?
19...
Oh.
(01:06):
We got Brian here, but I gotta tell you, he kind of chickened out, decided he didn't want to be on.
It was built in what year, Brian?
This building here was 1910.
1910.
Now, wasn't there a building prior to this?
1901.
Burnt down in 1907, they built this one.
The club was started on Guard Island in 1865.
(01:28):
So this would be one of the oldest yacht clubs in the country, right?
Yes.
Okay.
I think in the country we're 10th oldest.
10th oldest?
Yeah.
Okay.
I think it's second on the Great Lakes.
That is awesome.
Who would be first?
We're the oldest on Lake Erie though.
Yes.
Okay.
The oldest on Lake Erie.
Now who would be the first oldest?
Anybody know?
It doesn't matter, I'm just curious.
(01:50):
The oldest club in the country, I think, is New York.
See, I don't think about that because that's way out of here.
Now what does the rear Commodore do?
I don't really know.
So rear Commodore, I'm in charge of entertainment, membership, publications, and I don't know,
anything that the Commodore or the vice Commodore doesn't want to do.
(02:13):
So now tonight's event that we're having here, Friends of the Mills,
what is the purpose of this?
What's going on tonight?
It's just a get together of all the sailors that are going to participate or have been
part of the Mills race.
And it's just to get together to talk about the event, talk about what's upcoming,
(02:35):
and to just kind of promote what's going on.
Now do you sail or are you more of a power boater?
I'm a power boater.
But that's okay, that's just a different thing.
But I got to tell you, I like sailing.
I wouldn't mind one day learning how to sail.
You come on that boat any time you want, Norm.
You just call.
Go ahead, go ahead.
You've seen us chopping at the bar.
(02:57):
How many sailboats do you guys anticipate to have in the Mills race this year?
It's hard to say.
This being the 100th anniversary, it's hard to say how many boats we're going to have,
but we've already had a record sign up to this point.
How many have you had sign up to this point?
I think we were up to 82 boats already.
That's a lot.
That's way more than we've ever had at this time.
(03:18):
Especially this early.
Now when actually is the race?
It's in June, right?
June 6th, June 7th, I believe is the race.
Now, as I recall, the week of the race is a pretty big deal, right?
There's a lot of stuff that goes on.
And what kind of stuff goes on the week of the race?
(03:39):
So the week of the race on Thursday night, we have at TYC, we've got a big party here.
Now, call it what it is.
It's the famous Mills party.
Yeah, the Mills party.
I've been to it.
It's pretty awesome.
So don't downplay it now.
(03:59):
Yeah, and we'll have a band.
We'll have all kinds of people here hanging out.
And hopefully we'll have a lot of boats that are staging and getting ready for the next day.
The next morning on Friday morning, we'll have breakfast for the sailors before they head out.
(04:23):
And then during that afternoon, we'll kind of get ready to head out and we'll head over to Put-in-Bay
to all the power boaters will head over to be able to bring the sailboats in once they get there on Saturday morning.
(04:43):
And have a great party.
Yeah, absolutely.
Yeah, I've been to the Mills party.
Let me ask you this.
Now, you said about boats coming into here.
What is, and I'm not going to steal your thunder.
What is the special thing that happens if you bring in a boat here, a sailboat, what happens?
Maybe you don't know.
Oh, they fire the cannon off.
Oh, the cannon.
(05:03):
Yeah, the cannon is pretty cool.
Then as soon as the sailboat comes in, they fire the cannon off.
And I got to tell you, that's a pretty cool thing if you've never heard it or seen it.
Yeah.
Yeah, I heard it last year.
This is going to be my first time really being at the full event, the whole thing.
So I'm excited.
Now, I have to tell you a little story about the cannon.
(05:26):
My sister is the current Commodore here.
And the first year I came to the party, she was down shooting off the cannon.
And she said, can you cover the cannon for me while I go inside?
During that really short window, somebody came up and wanted to interview me about shooting off the cannon.
(05:46):
And she was not happy about that because I got to be on YouTube and on TV.
How do they determine who gets to set off the cannon?
Yeah, that's a great question, you know.
The Commodore gets to set off the cannon.
Oh, is that it?
I think that's it.
(06:06):
If you're the Commodore, you're in charge of the cannon.
That's kind of scary, letting her be in charge of the cannon.
Maybe we could get special privileges.
To set it off?
Yeah.
Would you do it?
I don't know.
She's already said, I'm the only one that's shooting off the cannon this year.
What do you think?
That's what she said.
Me being related to her, maybe we can see.
We could get the grandkids as well.
(06:28):
Oh yeah, yeah.
We'll say, can the grandkids do it?
She'll say yeah for that.
Yeah, I don't know.
She's like safety conscious.
She wants to make sure she's got earmuffs.
She is an engineer, by the way.
Yeah, I get that.
I don't know.
Safety glasses, I don't know.
Is there anything?
Tell me, if I was looking to join a club, why would I want to join TYC?
(06:50):
This is your pitch.
This is my pitch.
So I'm going to say the oldest club, the oldest yacht club on Lake Erie.
Lots of history, great people.
We have entertainment all the time, trying to bring more people in always.
(07:11):
We always have good parties.
At least once a month, we'll have a big party.
We try to bring in bands and DJs and everything we can do to make it fun to hang around
in the summertime.
Plenty of stuff to do.
Beautiful club, I guess.
It is a beautiful club.
(07:32):
And the other advantage that you guys have is you have a deep water port here
in that there's only certain places that the Jet Express can come in.
And I know they do come in here in the spring.
So it is a very nice location.
Now I have heard rumor, I want to see if you can confirm this,
that this club is haunted and there's a little boy that appears.
(07:54):
Do you know anything about that?
Third floor, third floor, right?
Third floor.
Well, you heard about it.
I've heard about it.
Who told you?
Who told you?
I just know people.
Or did you see it online or something?
Well, tell us about this haunting.
What happened?
All right, I'm only going to say this.
I'm not sure about the little boy, okay?
However, my wife will tell you that she has had several episodes
(08:22):
where she would be in the room and feel like there was somebody behind her.
And she thought it was me several times that was behind her.
And she was talking to someone behind her.
And every time she would look back and she would see like a halo of something.
(08:48):
And it wasn't me.
So that's happened several times.
Well, I can say you do not have a halo.
I mean, I like you.
In different rooms, it's happened a couple of times.
Okay.
So that's as close as I've been.
So there is a possibility that you might be haunted.
There's a possibility.
There's several stories that have happened.
All right.
That there's lots of events that people can't understand.
(09:12):
The one thing that I was a part of is one night we were locking the place up.
And the bartender went up to turn the lights off on the third floor.
And she came running down screaming.
And she heard like the noise of a jack in a box.
And she could swear that there was something up there playing music.
(09:37):
And I went up there to turn the lights off because she wouldn't go back up there.
And I didn't hear anything.
But I'm just saying that that's the closest I've been to it.
Told you.
Third floor.
Third floor.
If you're looking for a beautiful club, if you're looking for a deep water port,
if you're looking for friendly people, I would say you ought to come to TYC.
This is a very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very,
(10:01):
very nice club.
So thanks for joining us.
And good luck with your mills this year.
All right.
Thanks.
Nice to meet you.
