(00:30):
Alright, good morning, good afternoon, good evening, whatever time of day it is where you're listening to us from.
We are Jive Talking and we are coming at you live from Jolly Roger Sailing Club in Toledo, Ohio along the beautiful Lake Erie.
(00:51):
I am Christina Columbus. I am going to be hosting today along with my co-host next to me.
Ted Mount, I gotta tell you, I think I'm gonna let you do the opening from now on. It sounded better.
Did it? I mean, it is me. It sounds a lot better.
I didn't say, I forgot to say Jolly Roger Sailing Club where pirates come to play.
Oh, that's my fault. I always say that because tweak.
(01:13):
You didn't say it the last two podcasts. Phil doesn't like it when I say it. That's why I just said it today.
This was for Phil Fry.
Alright, anyways, back on track, sir. We are here today with two wonderful ladies from the North Cape Yacht Club.
So I will let them introduce themselves.
(01:34):
Hi, I'm Brandy Boney and I'm Betsy Bradley.
Don't they sound good? They sound wonderful.
We're at the back again. Yeah. I mean, this is Brandy's second time with us.
I know. She's a veteran now. She is. Did you punch her card? Did she get like a free drink or something?
Free ice cream cone. Awesome. That's why I'm doing this really is for the ice cream.
(01:56):
So we have them here with us today because they are doing something pretty cool.
We've had Spectrum Sailing on and we've talked about how North Cape hosted them last year and all the wonderful things that went along with that.
This year, North Cape is taking it kind of to the next level to kind of help out Spectrum Sailing.
(02:23):
And they are going to be doing a fundraiser to help raise some money for Spectrum Sailing and their events.
So do you guys want to go ahead and tell us a little bit about what you guys have going on and you know?
First, first, let's start with tell us about North Cape Yacht Club itself because some people may not know about this great club.
(02:48):
And I mean that seriously, it is a very nice club and they're great people.
So why don't you tell us a little bit about your club and then Christina, you can ask your question.
OK, my fault, my fault. I jumped a little bit too fast into the meat and potatoes.
I like meat and potatoes.
So North Cape Yacht Club is just north of Toledo on Lake Erie.
(03:11):
We have great access to the lake.
You do?
Yeah.
Seriously?
You sail right out our cut. You're right on the lake.
It doesn't take a lot of time to get out to good sailing or power boating, good boating.
And we have beautiful property. We have the best beach.
(03:33):
The beach is really nice.
Yeah, best beach of any yacht club anywhere, I bet, in the world.
I mean, our beach is pretty amazing.
So which makes our sailing camp and junior sailing nice and easy. They can launch off the beach.
Although we also have the launch into the cut that they can launch the little boats off of.
(03:57):
You do have a beautiful beach. I mean, it's and it's a large beach, too.
It is. Yeah. Yeah.
And you forgot the playground for the kids.
We have a playground for the kids. We have a nice patio.
We have the upper deck on the roof, which is a fantastic view.
Very fun to go up there and watch the boats come and go and enjoy the ambience of the lake.
(04:22):
And the club does a lot of really cool. They do a lot of really cool activities.
So we we host at least one, sometimes a couple regattas each year.
And we have like we've had wine tasting evenings and that's been great on the on the upper deck.
(04:45):
And yeah, wine is a good time.
And just like just all sorts of all sorts of activities and basically any, you know, any type of sailor that you are,
whether you just are getting started or whether you've been sailing all your life or whether you were sailing for a while
(05:06):
and now you've got a powerboat because you just want things to be a little easier in your life.
We we just have a really neat membership with kind of folks from from all elements of sailing and boating.
Yeah, that's right. And and we have, you know, the different groups, too.
(05:27):
We have the cruising group that's a very active and in going on cruises around the lake.
And of course, our racers are a huge group and we have just the casual sailors and and we love our power boaters, too,
to help with race committee for the sailboat. So we need some of those.
(05:51):
Well, the one thing that's nice, too, is you have a lot of experienced, very experienced sailors that if somebody is looking to get some pointers or learn.
I know that people have met at your club are very helpful, are willing to teach new people.
I mean, so not every club's that way.
You know, yeah, that's very true.
(06:12):
There are a lot of racers that there are some racers in some places and not too many at North Cape,
but that won't let anybody new on their boat because it's going to take their performance down.
You have to take the time to explain and maybe they're not going to do it quite right the way you want to.
But I would say that the majority of the racers at North Cape will welcome anybody aboard and try to give them a good experience.
(06:39):
And we don't care so much about our performance.
We want to have a good time and we want other people to enjoy it also.
Now, before we dive into spectrum sailing, do you guys still take new members?
Absolutely.
So you're open to new members because some clubs aren't, you know.
Yeah. Yes.
Oh, we're absolutely open to new members and we have several different levels.
(07:02):
Of course, we have junior for the young, you know, young adults and the teens.
And but then we have a club membership, which is basically like a social membership if you don't own a boat.
And then our senior membership is for people who do own boats.
And we started a new category of crew member.
(07:26):
So if you crew on a boat, you can become a member as a crew membership.
So you're not paying as much as a full membership because you don't necessarily have a boat yourself.
Well, that's a neat level.
Yeah.
Is that new?
That's new.
I think about three years now, three years into having our crew membership.
If you hear nine one one show up, it's probably for Christina.
(07:51):
I don't know if she's got whooping cough or what?
I've got a tickle in my throat.
It's not very funny, though.
It's not funny at all.
She's trying so hard to like hold this all in.
She might as well not let it out.
It's OK.
As long as you don't bang on the table, that makes the sound guy crazy.
And so anyways, so now we asked your question about spectrum.
(08:15):
OK.
So I'm very excited to hear about the fundraiser that you guys have coming up.
So tell us a little bit about what you guys have going on.
Well, we are we're starting a fundraiser race and this will be the first year for this.
And in in the spirit of inclusivity, which is really important with spectrum, obviously,
(08:42):
one of the things we wanted to do is we wanted to make sure that this was a race that could include all sorts of sailors.
So we have a regular points race or a counter, if you will.
And and that race will start at one o'clock on June 22nd.
(09:04):
But also on June 22nd at two o'clock, we're going to start.
We're going to have a fundraise.
And so that will be more for your your cruiser class boats, folks who are not interested in doing a super competitive race,
but want to get out on the water, want to help with this cause, want to be involved.
(09:25):
And one of the things that that we plan to do with that with that fundraise is invite some of the spectrum campers,
some of our previous spectrum campers to come with a parent and be on one of those boats so that they can be part of that.
We've talked about having some of our instructors take out our one or two of our or maybe all three of our fleet of J80s.
(09:54):
That's that's what we do.
The both the adult learn to sail and obviously the spectrum sailing camp.
Those are the boats that we use for those things.
So we're thinking about taking some of those out to allow for as many students as possible to be able to participate in the in the fundraise.
And we're hoping to bring in some local celebrities to be on some of the boats and and enjoy enjoy the water with us.
(10:22):
There's going to be a dinner afterwards and a DJ Scott Herman from Spectrum is going to join us and talk about the program.
Maybe he could be the DJ.
You know that would be interesting.
I've seen a moonwalk before so does he move.
Yeah, yeah, but he doesn't want to tell you about it.
So we won't tell him in advance.
(10:43):
We'll just say would you moonwalk for us, Scott?
I think that's I think that's $10,000.
You can moonwalk.
I think that's an excellent plan.
Excellent plan.
But yeah, so that's kind of the that's kind of the basics of it.
Did I leave anything out, Betsy?
I don't think so.
Okay, thank you. Got it pretty covered.
(11:04):
So you guys had let me ask this.
How did you come to be involved with Spectrum sailing?
Well, so the the club hosted it last year and I I don't know if you were involved with it at all, but I wasn't involved with the planning of it last year.
But when I heard that it was coming, I was very excited about it because I'm a career educator.
(11:29):
I've worked with students with learning differences my entire career.
So I thought this is such a great opportunity for for our club to do some some real good for a lot of a lot of kiddos who don't necessarily always get the same opportunities as their neurotypical peers.
And so I was super excited about it.
(11:51):
My whole family volunteered for it last year.
We were really, really excited about that.
Some of our adult learn to sail instructors were they were instructors for Spectrum last year.
And I was just so excited about the whole process that I've I've become more involved in in some of the planning and and development of all of this.
(12:19):
And I should I should say to that Doug Isaacson is also he's our Spectrum liaison, but he's in Puerto Rico right now.
So the commute was a little too much to Toledo for him to be on the show this morning.
Where's the commitment?
So that's kind of how that's kind of how I got involved was just as as a volunteer initially, but then seeing all the good that the program does and and how great it was and getting to meet Scott and and recognizing his dedication to to really making sure that that students with learning differences have opportunities that they might not.
(13:04):
They might not otherwise get so. So that was that was kind of how I got involved.
He's an awesome guy isn't he?
He really is.
Very charismatic.
I roped Betsy in because she Betsy is one of the best sailors I know.
She's a phenomenal racer.
She knows a lot about it.
I know kind of squat about racing when we were talking earlier about you know bringing people aboard and and bringing new folks on boats.
(13:37):
When I took the adult learn to sail class number of years ago.
Betsy was the first one who said hey you got to come out for the women's race with me and come out on our boat so I did that and then she invited me to come back for Wednesday night racing and that was that was kind of how.
I got involved in in all of that and I just respect her so much and really wanted her to be involved in this as well so that I didn't screw up the race part of it.
(14:05):
Now okay I have a question.
Okay because I love to collect t shirts.
Is there any chance that we are getting a t shirt for the spectrum sale fundraiser event or could we could we work that in?
Oh absolutely.
So we $65.
(14:28):
You know what I will pay it.
Awesome.
That's a short sleeve.
So that's that's the cost for you for the shirt.
Okay.
Do you take Venmo?
Absolutely.
No that so the name of the race is coming about and we will have shirts so the.
(14:49):
I'm not trying to be funny.
It's coming or the name is coming about.
Coming about.
Okay.
I just wanted to clarify that.
Yes.
I thought you meant it's coming about or it's going to be.
Oh no the race is actually called coming about.
Okay go ahead I'm sorry.
No that's fine.
I should have mentioned it earlier when you asked for details.
That's okay.
So there will be a shirt.
(15:11):
It won't be included in the race registration fee.
It will be it will be separate so you can get shirts for so if you're participating in in the race you can get shirts for everyone on your boat.
We're working with a local vendor Jazzy Gear and they're going to give us a little discount on the shirts and then all of the proceeds from those shirts will go back to spectrum sailing.
(15:38):
Now is that something somebody's going to need to preorder or is that something that you can get right there at the event.
They will need to be preordered.
I'm I'm talking with Dan at at Jazzy Gear to find out if if perhaps if folks see the shirts on the day of the race and they're like wow those are really rad I should have gotten one of those.
(16:03):
If we can do some ordering after the fact but if if we just order a whole bunch of them we could end up we could end up really not maybe not even breaking even on the on the shirt costs so we don't want to do that we want to do this as as fiscally responsibly as we possibly can.
(16:24):
So there will be a preorder and then we're going to see if if there will be like a I don't know post order is that what I spent the phrase I'm looking for.
So if folks want to purchase one on that day they can order it and then pick it up but or maybe have it delivered at a later date.
Very cool. If somebody wants to preorder how would they how would they go about doing that.
(16:49):
Well we haven't gotten we haven't gotten the hopefully by the time this airs we'll have the flyer up and ready and we'll have a page on North Cape's website so I will I will follow up with that but we don't have that quite ready as of taping time.
So what all you're saying is that when they get ready to order whenever they hear this if they go to North Cape there'll be a section that says coming about they can register they can order a shirt so I guess that would be the answer.
(17:19):
Yeah my daughter once went today that I want. Yeah. Yeah I want one today too and and we haven't printed any yet. I really I really just love t shirts.
I collect them their story pieces because it's cool to say like hey if somebody sees you wearing the shirt then you can say like you know you know North Cape Yacht Club did this fundraiser for spectrum sailing and they did spectrum you know and it's it's a way it's a conversation piece.
(17:48):
Absolutely. We can say today's episode sponsored by jazzy gear.
Is that what the name of that is correct. Yeah. Yeah. I think you have all your gear that's jazzy. I think absolutely.
Who would we contact it jazzy gear if we wanted a shirt. What's the name of the person Dan Dan. Well I think I think the ordering needs to go through North Cape. Yeah. Well I'm saying what if you had another thing.
(18:18):
Yeah. Right. Jazzy gear contact Dan. Do you know what Dan's phone number is off the top of my head. No. We'll look it up. We got we got at least we're going to plug it because you know I'll call them and say then I can get me my shirt for free.
There's this there's this website called Google G O O G L E. And if somebody wants to find jazzy gear.
(18:41):
They can they can. All right. Don't look up the numbers. She'll get all right. All right. And then she'll talk to me on the way home about it so I don't want to get into trouble.
But I never heard a jazzy gear. I thought you were going to say I've never heard a Google. I'm not surprised. No. Where is jazzy gear located. LaSalle. Oh okay. So close to you guys. Close to us. Yeah. Are they a member of your club. Yes. Yeah. That's good.
(19:05):
I mean yeah. Oh absolutely. Yeah. So they're going to make sure. And I and I think in all seriousness it is better because if you preorder gobs and gobs you just don't know. You know. Right. Right. And and we and we want this to be a fund raising. Right. Right.
Right. You want as much money as possible to be able to go to spectrum sailing. Yeah. Right. Absolutely. One of the things I did want to since all these podcasts are not air airing together about what spectrum is.
(19:33):
I did this on another one. I just wanted to kind of read what their mission is. Sure. That way if you happen to listen to this about this in the fundraiser but you don't know who spectrum is their mission is it's a spectrum sailing provides maritime education programming and outreach for autistic individuals.
So that way you guys get an idea what it is that they're doing what I want to be on board with it. The other thing too is and this is why they're doing this event is these things all cost money. And this is a nonprofit and right now I know Scott doesn't really even get paid.
(20:09):
And and what he's got to do too is he's got to have the ability to clone himself so he can grow this which means he's going to need staff eventually. And so you know if you're listening to this and you say man I'm touched by some of these and like to give some money if you go to the spectrum sailing website.
There are ways to donate. Maybe when it comes time for your event you'll probably need help would you not think oh we will we're absolutely going to need need help it's it's going to be a we hope it'll be a nice big event.
(20:40):
Being that it's the first year for the event we know that sometimes when you don't already have some name recognition that that that sometimes you don't get quite the turnout that you want but we're hoping that this will be an event for sailors and non sailors alike.
Like I said we plan to have a DJ we're going to have a dinner as well. There. We're hoping that some of our some of our racers and and perhaps even folks who don't don't end up participating in the race will do some boat tours so if folks are interested in what does it look like to to be on one of these boats and so on.
(21:20):
We're hoping that there will be some opportunities for them to do that as well. So it'll be a nice it'll be a nice social activity and there will be opportunities for folks to come in and volunteer if you think you know I don't I don't have a lot of spare cash to throw at this but I have time and I've got and I've got talents for these sorts of things.
(21:43):
We absolutely love to hear from them and they can reach out to me directly through the adult learn to sail.
Email which is kind of lengthy but I'll but I'll walk you through it it's NC YC dot adult learn to sail at Gmail dot com. There was a two bed. Yeah it's not too bad as long as you can spell adult learn to sail with none of those are particularly difficult spelling words so I'm real real hopeful that will will be on on on track with that talk to text could help you if you aren't good at spelling sure sure.
(22:22):
Google Google Google. So if folks are when interested in volunteering they're absolutely welcome to to reach out to me and and I was just going to add to speak to the people that might be interested in in being there and seeing what's going on but are not sailors.
We will probably have some spectator power boats that you can go out and see what it looks like watch what that is awesome that is awesome. Have you thought about and I don't know I just thought about this and doesn't mean it's a good idea.
(22:55):
But probably not.
You can feel the love in the room coughing.
I think it'd be kind of if people could get like a lighthouse tour. You could take people out sail around the lighthouse and back or.
I mean if you've never seen that lighthouse.
(23:16):
That's pretty incredible. We often do that. Yeah, especially with people who have never been out there.
If somebody donated like so much money maybe they could get somebody to take them out for a cruise around the lighthouse. Yeah, we absolutely include that as we sure could you got to admit that would be kind of cool and depending on the time of day, maybe you could even say a sunset.
(23:41):
Yeah, lighthouse for a platinum level donation. Oh, I like that yours.
This is this is great. This is like having a committee meeting and a publicity event all at once. I'm I'm appreciative of.
Yeah, I don't know think platinum level, maybe maybe gold, maybe gold level. So what would be platinum.
(24:04):
I don't know. We've got to figure something out. Yeah, if you get the platinum level, you got if you're coming back you have to pay for the platinum level.
Otherwise, we're going to drop you at the lighthouse. Yeah, yeah, I gotta say I almost ended up landing on that island.
You mean you mean crashing into. Yeah, well, that landing. Yeah, well landing on and crashing into our well back fairly different concept. Well, what happened was, and my wife doesn't ever listen so she won't hear this but I'm gonna let her know we.
(24:36):
We were out sailing and I was like, not that I'm experienced now but I was out sailing and the boat was not operating correctly.
And I think it was probably operator error.
That was going to be my question. Well, okay.
Correctly or was it not being operated correctly. I don't even know who invited you. But anyways, I like this. We need to have brand new.
(25:03):
No, no, no, this will all get edited out.
So what happened was, I bought the sailboat, not somebody said well do you know how to sail I said no. And this story will show you I had no clue.
So somebody said, well, I said well show me how to put the sail up and I think I can handle this they said okay.
So I put the sail up and and the boats not doing anything is that my wife's like, maybe it's broke.
(25:34):
Well, I was trying to sail it using the traveler and I didn't know that you needed to like release the main you know and and so so it wasn't going anywhere.
So, so I was rather as my old piano teacher used to say was from England frustrated. So I was kind of frustrated.
So I said, I want to start up the motor so fine. So I started up the motor and I didn't know I had a line in the water.
(26:04):
So it promptly ate up the line.
So I had my first and today's episode sponsored by Tobo us.
So, so I had to have them come out. Now, a lot of people don't know but I also do get motion sick I got to be careful.
(26:27):
And this is a day where I didn't have anything on. So I'm already upset. So anyway, so the boat they come out. And so, my wife goes we're drifting.
And I go yeah she goes, we're gonna hit the island we're gonna hit the lighthouse. No, so, of course after I get done I'm like, all I would have had to done is drop the anchor.
(26:48):
But I'm so upset, you know, I'm not even thinking about it, you know, and, and, and by the way, if you don't have Tobo us this app, this thing would have cost me like 350 bucks for the guy just to come out and cut my line away.
And that it was literally there was was 10 minutes, you know, and the guys got the dog on the boat, you know, and everything and so anyways they promptly cut it away and then I, as soon as the guy left I puked over the side that really made the day for my wife.
(27:17):
I said, Do you think you'd come back again she goes don't ask me today.
So anyways, so I don't even know why I told you just so you know the lighthouse.
None of the lighthouse sales will be like that experience. Should we include the lighthouse trip the sunset lighthouse trip, you, you will not have to endure what Ted had to endure on his first trip to the lighthouse.
(27:41):
And do not go with the host, they will make sure that you are with inexperienced. Hey, hey I can do it now.
And by the way, you do always want to make sure there are no lines in the water.
When you fire up your motor.
Just a little bit of advice. All right. So, back on track.
(28:02):
How did the club react when you told them you guys were going to get involved with spectrum and what is their reaction to this I mean is there a lot of energy for it.
I think initially there, there was a little bit of hesitation initially, bringing spectrum on because anytime, anytime you're doing something brand new and folks don't really don't really have a sense of what how it's how it's going to operate I think there's always some hesitation
(28:33):
because most of your old time sailor still got dial up.
So true.
Speaking from experience.
I'm glad Betsy was the one who said that so true.
But I, you know, there's always hesitation when when there's an unknown, an unknown factor.
(28:54):
And I think having had the experience.
I think, I think all of that is just is, there's a lot of there's, there's a lot of excitement behind it. Folks are really enthusiastic about supporting getting folks on the water.
(29:24):
Yes, I would getting folks on the water, I would totally agree with that North Cape we're almost all of us absolutely love to spread the love of getting out on the water. And anyway, that we can do that is something we're behind.
I could have been involved in any way last year, and not be just totally bitten by the excitement of the kids, the parents to see the parents just so touched that the kid got to have what we could quote, maybe considered a quote, normal activity to have
(29:57):
their kid go somewhere where there was a bunch of kids like them, have them be accepted not judged. Our parent was talking about the fact that that they had to worry about how their kid was going to react and know they didn't have to worry about any of that
because everybody was the same.
So, okay. Well, let me ask you this. So let's say,
(30:21):
somebody wants to help. Well, let's start with registration, when do you anticipate registration for, and I know right now we're recording it's end of February but when do you anticipate you're going to start having registration up.
I think it should open sometime next month in March. And I think it's going to be, I think it'll be relatively soon. We've got, we've got registration, including the, including the shirts, closing May 25 closing May 25, but folks will still be able to register to race after
(31:01):
that. They just, they just can't be guaranteed a shirt on on race day.
So, that's fair. Yeah, yeah, they don't need enough time to print and exactly right. The race registration part of it will go, I mean we have our yachting activities that overseas all of the racing.
(31:23):
So, that will just follow their usual procedures which the usual, usually the cut off time for registering is the night before, so that they can have a scratch sheet of what boats are participating.
What about, and who's doing the shirts this year.
Jazzy gear.
(31:44):
Jazzy gear is our sponsor. Anyways, are you going to have anything for nine, let's say you don't race, and you just want to come out and support it. What are the non racers non sailors non boaters what could they do there.
Like I said I think we're going to have some, some boat tours, if you're interested in that, that'd be fun there.
(32:05):
We do have a beach.
We do have that also they could use the beach that day. Okay, absolutely. They can absolutely come out and use the beach.
We do have a little nature walk around the kids like that last year. Yeah, they did. Yeah, it's a short walk but I like that. Yeah, yeah, it's a little wetlands experience. Yeah, sure.
(32:27):
And there's, there will be like I said there's going to be dinner available there, what's it going to be do you know yet.
What's the plan. Oh yes, I, you were talking earlier about the mills race, we're going to do the mills masters picnic meal.
If you've not been to that.
(32:48):
This year's the hundredth and Ron and Kay who run it running case soca running case soca yes.
Great people by the way if you don't know who they are. They were passionate, very, they were asking a few people should we do something different for the mills picnic since this is the hundredth.
And everybody was like, oh no, we want the meals masters salad picnic that we always have. So that's what we're going to do for the spectrum.
(33:20):
You're going to do the mills masters picnic after the race you mean, we're going to do their, their menu. Oh, I got you. Okay, I misunderstood that. Yeah, yeah, we're gonna we're gonna replicate their menu and we'll have dessert, probably cupcakes cookies.
That sort of thing. Gotta have cupcakes and cookies. I mean, really it's important.
(33:42):
The bar will be open. What's a voting event we are. I mean, I think it goes without saying but I just for any for any non voters out there and non members are non AYC IOIA people still can come publics welcome.
Yes, absolutely. Okay, yes. Go ahead.
So, and, and I don't know if I said this again but we will have a DJ so there, there will be activities for certain for for okay to repeat because those of us with ADHD.
(34:12):
We need to hear it more than once.
Now I'm assuming dinner will come at a cost. Do you guys anticipate what that cost might be. I don't we haven't really talked about it yet but question but again that will be something where all of those proceeds are going to go back to spectrum.
So I can't imagine it would be more than $10 a person. I'm thinking that's probably what it will be okay.
(34:38):
What if you wanted the platinum level.
Platinum gets the ride out and back.
And dinner, and one night you still got to pay the $10 for that's a good point.
Do you have any idea how much registration have you talked about the numbers yet I mean, I'm not trying to put you in spot. No, no, that's a reasonable question yes we.
(35:00):
The registration cost will be $45 per boat and that's fundraise or. Yep, that includes a shirt. No, the shirts are additional costs, the shirts are separate. Oh, that's right.
We already we already spoke on this is the ADD I was onto my question.
I was laser focused on the shirt.
I'm not sure I'm going to do that. How many how many shirts do you estimate Christina that you have from events.
(35:25):
Well, I will tell you that I just moved from California to Ohio. Yeah, and there are still about six large wardrobe boxes shirt full of probably that haven't been unpacked yet.
That's a lot of shirts that is a lot of shirts. Yeah, anyways, you need another one. Where did you get your shirt from. What shirt to shirts.
(35:47):
Where did you get them from all from our sponsor.
Oh, I did not get them from jazzy gear.
They would have been nicer if they came from jazzy gear.
They would have been more jazzy anyways. So $45 you said that's cheap for a race $45 and that that is for the fundraise or for the points race so either one you want to do there.
(36:11):
They're the same cost.
Okay, so okay, this, I just happen to think about this, they come in, they want to race.
Where can they tie up.
We, we do have some. So that could be an issue at your place right right well I'm not saying issue but I don't want to make it sound negative.
We have guests tie up along the wall, right, so we have space for three or four ish five maybe boats along the wall, right. People who are leaving their doc, like cruisers right are supposed to let our club manager know I'm going to be gone, this date to this date, so that
(36:50):
then we know that that doc is available for a guest, and we should have some docs available because, because there is a cruise that's that's ending that weekend.
And some of the cruisers may not be back by Saturday so so there should be some talk space so what if 30 boats show up.
We'll find space, we will.
(37:13):
I'm saying because that's the whole point right right.
I don't want to put you on the spot, you might think about it.
I do highly doubt, but I mean, hopefully we have that many between our boats that are our members who have boats there.
(37:37):
If 30 outside boats come, we would have to talk with Toledo Beach. Well plus let's be honest, you can probably tie it would you say five on your side, maybe. Yeah, and five on the other side.
I mean if you had to we could figure a way to shuttle back and forth from the restaurant side right right. Yeah, right. So you can get 1015 right there.
And then so I mean, the point is guys if you're listening to this, don't stay away, they'll figure out where we'll get you a spot. Yeah, we'll figure it out for you. Bring your wallet.
(38:07):
Bring your wallet and your boat. Yeah, and your crew. Yes, and your crew. Well we want the wallet first and the crew.
You don't have to bring the wallet if you take your credit card out of it. That's true. But you got to donate, are they going to be able to do that with a credit card.
Yeah, I'm sure. They'll figure it out. Yeah, we'll figure it out. Oh yes. Or Venmo.
You still want that shirt.
(38:31):
From Jazzy Gear. Jazzy Gear. Jazzy.
I might order two. Yeah, this is free advertisement. There's only 10 people listening anyway so it doesn't matter.
So how many people do you estimate that it will take to put on an event like this? I know you guys got an idea. Uh oh, we got a panic look coming this way.
(38:52):
Well, I mean, it's going to take a lot. I mean you could have like two or three people at the bar, right? It is going to take a lot. So we, race committee, you're going to have.
How much overlap we have across committees within the whole event. I think, you know, I was thinking about this last night.
(39:13):
It's, I mean, it's going to take a couple few dozen. Okay. Maybe even a couple score. So it's going to be.
Yeah, it's going to take a couple scores. Yeah. Is this like Abraham Lincoln? Yeah, sorry. A score is 20. So she was trying to speak your language because she knows you're old.
Okay, you're walking home. She's thoughtful. Isn't she? She's like my clone with a wig on.
(39:39):
That's what everybody always says. Anyway, so you're thinking probably 20 to 30, somewhere in there. Yeah, yeah. I would think so. By the time you have kitchen crew and the race committee and.
Absolutely. Can you get muddy mudhound out? That's one of the things we're hoping to do. How about the walleye dude? We're hoping so. We're hoping so. So we're working on contacting folks.
(40:01):
Can we get Scott to dress up like Captain Jack Sparrow? I mean, I would like to see that. He has offered to stand on the bow of one of the boats in like.
And say I'm the king of the world? Dress. His dress blues or whatever. Oh, I like that. With a captain's hat and all that good stuff. He has offered to. Okay. And then we could get some video of that. I'm certain that would be excellent publicity for him.
(40:30):
I agree with you. Yeah. What do you need from the, anything from the sailing community? Like, because I mean.
Participants. Boats. Absolutely. Yes. We absolutely need participants. Boats come and race or come and do the fun race. Or help with the lighthouse cruise. Absolutely. For your platinum membership.
(40:52):
For platinum donation. From Jazzy Gear. So we, I mean, we absolutely would love to see. This is not just a North Cape event. We want to see, we want to see folks from all over the western coast of Lake Erie coming out to participate in this. It's an exceptionally good cause.
(41:13):
It's a really important way to get, to get young people out on the water who, who again might not otherwise get that opportunity. And the opportunity then by doing this fundraiser, it goes beyond western Lake Erie and allows for folks in other locales as well.
(41:35):
So it's, it's a really cool opportunity to support a really important organization for, for sailing, I think. So right now it sounds like you're thinking that maybe you can grow this into an annual thing.
Yes, we are really hoping to do that. Yeah. And, and build. We absolutely, that's, that's where, that's where we want to be. We want this to grow a bit every single year and, and become a race that, that people come to expect and get excited about early in the spring.
(42:10):
And I think that that's what brings the coming about race going to be. And I like that name. Thank you. I do. Well, as I was thinking about it, we had a meeting where we were trying to kind of come up with a name and, and we had just kind of done a spectrum sailing race as a, as a placeholder.
And I think about it later. And when you asked earlier about, you know, what was the initial reaction of folks in the club when they first heard about this, I was kind of thinking about coming about is kind of a nice, a nice name because it, it kind of represents that coming
(42:44):
out of, of how folks think about people with learning differences. We, we kind of want to, we want to make sure that, that folks are kind of changing their minds that, that just because you have learning differences doesn't mean you can't do things.
And we, we want to make sure that, that we're coming about on those, on those sort of antiquated ideas and including as many people in, in our really awesome sport as, as we possibly can.
(43:14):
Yeah, that you put that perfectly. Thank you. Now have you come up, we didn't mention that what's shirt going to look like. Have you.
So I do have, I do have a logo. If you have anybody wants to look here, it's what it looks like. No, I had somebody come on here one time to brought visual aids and, and, and I had to say, you know, no one can see this but go ahead.
(43:38):
But I'll show it to you guys and then you can, you can put them.
Maybe as your, as your little tag logo with this out. Check that out.
So it's basically, it's basically like a graphic, a visual graphic of a few sailboats on the water. And it says coming about benefit race spectrum sailing.
(44:04):
We've got some, we've got some nice fonts and styling going on there so so. And I'm hoping that the shirts will be kind of a nice dark but bright blue, and then of course sponsors will be on the back.
Oh, nice. Um, now for somebody who wants to maybe help volunteer, who isn't necessarily a sailor. Are there opportunities for that, and how does they get in contact with you.
(44:37):
And are interested in doing that. Well we, we always need help in the kitchen, set up preparing cleanup will have a crew there on Friday night pre prepping food for Saturday.
And they can go to the website and contact us through North Capes website. Okay, absolutely.
(45:03):
And the, and they can use the email address to contact me, the one that we, we said earlier, you can say it again. Sure, ncyc.adultlearntosail at gmail.com.
And you can still use talk to text if you can't spell.
I love the support we're getting here just just in case just in case just in case we want to make it accessible to everyone.
(45:29):
And if you want to know where jazzy gear is located.
Google, Google, G o G le, or you could just listen to Betsy when she tells you it's in LaSalle, Michigan.
That's true you know LaSalle, those of you. We do have some people listen outside Toledo it's not a very big town so if you went in there and said point me in the direction.
(45:52):
And by the way you can probably order jazzy gear online. Absolutely. So if you want to participate, or if you want to shirt.
But this is a great organization.
Obviously everybody's out there looking for, you know, money looking for things to be involved with but everybody, sometimes this will touch somebody and say, I'd like to be involved with that, then that's your thing and if it doesn't, that's okay too.
(46:19):
And I think you want to, you know, Scott is has a lot of energy Scott has a child with autism himself. This is kind of why this program came about because it was nowhere for his son to have an opportunity to sail, and he was looking for some alternatives,
nobody really was comfortable with him being in their sailing program.
(46:40):
And a lot of it has to do with ignorance in the pure sense of the word not knowing, not as far as ignorance being a bad word but just not knowing. So therefore they were scared to have them involved in and this helps break down some barriers.
If you go to the spectrum site and you look at video, you just see the sheer joy on the kids face, it's infectious. And when you hear parents stories like earlier today.
(47:05):
Somebody here actually was crying because they just were so touched by the stuff that Scott did I mean this is what this is done for and this is why they're having this fundraiser.
And it's support for the whole family, because she also talked about, you know, her being able to connect with other parents who are the same thing. So I mean it's not just, it's a big thing for the kids but it's a huge thing for the entire family that you guys are doing.
(47:35):
And, you know, we've also had a powerboat that takes parents out so that they can see their kids sailing, which is awesome. Scott mentioned that. Yeah, we talked about that again today too.
And, and that, that was one of the things that my husband did when he volunteered and he, he said, you know, these parents are in tears, seeing their kids doing things independently and cooperatively in ways that they've, that they've not had opportunities to get to see their kids do.
(48:08):
So, it's, it's really important for the parents, it's, it's really impactful for the volunteers, and of course it's impactful for the, the students themselves the campers so it's it's just a, it's just a feel good operation all the way around it benefits a whole lot of people.
All right, well, there.
(48:30):
Coming about is going to be the, the, is going to be the name about. Oh, that's right. You know, that's true coming about. That's something that you appreciate when you sail with somebody when they say that before they tack.
It's great when you're with somebody, and they don't say they're coming about, and you're up working the sail next thing you know you're swimming. I don't want to mention anybody but anyways, not nobody that was not a that was not a slight at me just for the record I've
(48:57):
been that never gone for a for a swim or you jumped in pretty quick I did because I wanted to set the record straight.
But coming coming about is going to be June 22 right yep. And do you know the hours yet or is that okay the hours, the, the points race will start races will start at 1pm.
And then the fun race will start at 2pm.
(49:20):
So for those of you who like to sleep in. It starts in the afternoon, absolutely time to get to get a slow start to the day get your coffee and then get on out to North Cape.
Absolutely. Will the beverage tent be open by then.
Probably open at noon. Yeah. Okay, so, so maybe you just want to come out and see what it's about. That's the cool thing is let's say what is the spectrum sailing.
(49:47):
Come out just see what is meet some of the kids. If you can meet the kids. If you can meet Scott, and not be excited. I think you're dead.
Because I'll be honest with you. They, they are just, it's just amazing and then if muddy happens to be there.
You haven't lived to you got to meet muddy and get a picture with them.
(50:09):
And those of you who are maybe not from Toledo muddy mudhead is the mascot for our triple A baseball team here so there are people sometimes they have listened there are from Toledo, we can say celebrity local local celebrity Madonna sometimes to.
Yeah, muddy and Madonna Madonna is Madonna is the other mascot. That's true, not the Madonna. Yeah, yes, yes we will not have Madonna here. What about Taylor Swift.
(50:37):
Maybe to Kelsey brothers.
Yeah, we're working on those, those are those are more next year though yeah we that might be a build up to that. Yeah, they might be on tour or busy something.
I don't know but you know the race happens in the, in the summer so it's not like it's the off season for the Kelsey brother surely they'll have plenty of time to come out and hang with us. That's what I'm saying.
(51:02):
Why don't you put in a call to them. We could offer the platinum package for free. That's right.
Sunset lighthouse, and that could be where be very romantic for Taylor and Jason. Yeah. No, not Jason. What's Travis Travis Travis could propose to Taylor on the cruise around the lighthouse.
(51:25):
I think I would help with business, it really would. I think this is an excellent plan. Yeah, well, we just need to make it happen. We could raise a lot of money if we got the Swifties listening to us. That's right.
That is true.
Okay, well we could, we could like one of the tags could be something like that. I doubt it.
We could at least have the DJ. That's right. At the very least, the DJ will play some Taylor Swift. That's it. That's it. There we go. That's our, that's our lead in.
(51:54):
Next year, maybe we'll have her here. But this year, at least the DJ will play some Taylor Swift. You can't go wrong. She's releasing a new album so we can listen to some of the music. Does she mean she broke up with somebody again? I don't know. Oh, okay. I just wondered.
Okay, well, guys, thank you seriously for coming. I'm excited about this event. Thank you. Thank you for having us. Yes, thank you for having us. And now Spectrum, do you know when they're going to be, they're going to be out actually for the camp?
(52:22):
It's the week before, and I'm going to just pull up a calendar so that I make sure that I get the dates correct. That's okay. Because in my, in my head, the dates aren't.
And if you've listened to Brandy twice, you know her head works differently than other people. It really does. That's why she brought along a friend to keep her in line. That's right. I always have to have someone else to keep me on in line. It's June 11, 12, and 13 will be the camp this year.
(52:50):
And then Scott will actually be in, I can't remember whether he's going to be in Holland or Chicago the following week on the 18th, 19th, and 20th. Those are kind of the same place. Yeah. And then he'll be back here for our benefit race on the 22nd. So Scott will be there. He'll be, he'll be speaking at the dinner and hopefully we'll get him, we'll get him in his captain's hat on the bow of someone's boat.
(53:18):
We'll get some video of that. That sounds like a good plan. And yeah, we just hope folks in the area with, with sailboats come out, join us, be part of the race. You do not have to be a racer to be involved. That's right. You can do the fun race. Absolutely. Or just go out and spectate.
(53:39):
Yes, absolutely. We like if, if you have a sailboat and you're interested in helping out with this cause, we want you to be involved.
Well, does anybody have any closing comments?
No, I'm, I'm excited for the t-shirt.
From Jazzy Gear.
(54:01):
Well, I just want to thank you all for having us, having us on so that we could, we could talk about this. We really want to get the word out so that, you know, we have as much participation in this inaugural year as, as we can.
We're really excited about, about the cause and we're excited about, we're excited about the format of the race that we think it's going to be a really good time.
(54:22):
Anything else from you?
I guess I just wanted to back up and clarify. I think I was a little bit confusing talking about the meal.
I just, the point was that it's the menu that we're going to have is the Mills Master Menu, which is so good that nobody wanted a change.
They didn't want anything more special for this year because it's the hundred. They're like, oh no, keep it the way it is.
(54:47):
Absolutely.
So it's, it's a, a antipasto salad basically. That's just amazing.
Who makes it?
I will.
And my crew and my volunteers.
Yes, absolutely. And, and Betsy is totally amazing. So it will, it will be phenomenal.
Okay. Well, thanks again for coming.
(55:10):
Yes. Thank you guys so much.
Thank you for having us.
Yes, we appreciate it.
