Speaker 1 (00:00):
Choosing exactly the
percentage of people who follow
Stoicism, guys, is challenging.
It's truly challenging.
You know, if you compare it toother philosophies, religions,
stoicism is a niche.
It's a proper niche, okay.
(00:22):
However, many influential peoplehave included stoic principles
in their lives.
For example, we have NelsonMandela.
You know Nelson Mandela, right?
He often spoke about theimportance of maintaining
dignity and inner peace in theface of adversity, reflecting
stoic concepts of resilience.
Diversity reflecting stoicconcepts of resilience.
(00:44):
We have Elon Musk the crazygenius, elon Musk, right, if we
consider his resilience andlong-term thinking.
Ken Uryus is known for his calmand philosophical approach to
life.
Denzel Washington emphasizesdisciplines of control, purpose,
(01:05):
and all of which align withstoic values.
In his book we have a GreenLight.
Matthew McConaughey shareslessons on resilience and
self-reflection that reflectstoic principles.
Chris Hemsworth applies stoic, stoic Discipline to his Fitness
(01:25):
and Career.
Tom Hardy has spoken aboutovercoming adversity and
focusing on what we can controlA key Stoic concept.
That's very important, and somany people actually, and so on.
So today it's your turn, guys.
You are the one who canunderstand this beautiful
(01:48):
philosophy and apply it toachieve your dreams.
Hi guys, my name is Fabio fromJourney to Success, and welcome.
Today we're going to talk aboutthree important disciplines
that form part of Stoicism.
These are perception, actionand will.
But before going forward, please subscribe, okay?
(02:11):
So I know this is the rightdirection to lead you guys, to
drive you, to guide you towardsyour journey to success, and
let's get started.
Let's get started.
So let's start by introducingthe concept of Stoicism, let's
discover how it can help youachieve your goals.
(02:31):
Okay, so Stoicism first of alldeveloped around 2000 years ago.
So let's make a little bit ofhistory here.
So, developed around 2000 yearsago in the Roman Empire.
Developed around 2,000 yearsago in the Roman Empire.
Although it faded from academiccircles over time, its
(02:52):
philosophy has never trulydisappeared.
In fact, today, stoicism isespecially popular among people
focused on personal growth, mindfulness and logical thinking
.
This is why I want to discussit with you today, because it
can be a valuable resource for,you know, for, let's say,
(03:13):
cultivating inner growth andreaching your success.
So first, it's important toidentify the common challenges
you face when you try to achieveyour dreams, such as the fear
of failure.
You know the first one lack ofmotivation and overwhelming
obstacles.
These challenges may vary foreach person.
(03:37):
Okay, and only you know whatthey are.
It can be actually more thanthem.
However, here are threeimportant elements that can help
you overcome these challengesvia stoicism.
So the first element isperception.
Perception, so this refers tohow we see and decode the world
(04:05):
around us.
The second one is right action.
The right action, so these arethe decisions and actions we
take in response to ourperceptions.
Okay.
And the third is the will.
Will, so this is how we acceptthe things we cannot change, in
a way to understand our place inthe world.
(04:25):
Among all these keys, we mustnot forget, of course, patience
and emotions, awareness,impersonal thoughts, problem
solving, your duties, pragmatism, fortitude and resilience,
virtue and kindness, acceptanceand meditation on mortality.
So we're going to look at allof them today, no worries.
(04:48):
So let's first discuss with thefirst one, right, so the
discipline of perception.
Sometimes we can be too stubbornand try to achieve the
unachievable because we want tobe exactly like our heroes or
idols.
You know, the truth is thateveryone has their pros and cons
(05:11):
and limits, so the sooner youunderstand this, the faster you
can achieve your goals.
I firmly believe that you canachieve whatever you want to do
in your life truly, but there isa fundamental factor that no
one really considers guys.
It is the factor of time, ofcourse.
(05:33):
For example, if I want tobecome a great podcaster but
fear being labeled as Italianbecause of my accent, I'm not
saying it's impossible topractice to achieve a clear
accent, okay.
However, I acknowledge that itwill take time, so instead I
(05:54):
would rather focus on improvingmy writing and communication
skills.
So when you recognize yourlimits, based on the time you
can devote, you can work moreeffectively on other skills.
That will accelerate yourjourney.
Okay, of course, this was anexample.
Yeah, I'm very proud to beItalian.
(06:17):
The key point is try to avoidbeing too stubborn and
acknowledge the evidence of thelimitation that can hold you
back.
If you do that, you can achieveso much, but just only by
acknowledging these limitations.
(06:37):
Also, it's important toidentify which aspects of your
day are within your control andwhich are not.
So once you accept this aspect, you can save your energy by
letting go of what you cannotcontrol and focus on what you
(06:58):
can Now in order to achieve yourdreams.
Within the perception concept, here are four key points to
remember.
The first one is, of course, control your perceptions.
The second is direct youractions properly.
The third is accept what isoutside your control.
And the fourth point is clarifywho you are and what you stand
(07:22):
for.
Number two peace and stability.
Peace and stability come fromyour own choices and good
judgment, okay, not from what'shappening around you.
So if you try to escapechallenges, stress or even
difficult people, you won't findreal peace, okay.
(07:44):
However, if you learn to avoidthe negative thoughts that
create these problems, you willremain strong and steady no
matter where you are.
Number three passions andemotions.
Why do you feel like you can'tcontrol your passion and
(08:06):
emotions?
Why do you think you are apuppet of your own brain?
You're powerful guys.
You are, and you can make anychoice you want if you truly
desire it.
You are in control.
You have to remember that.
When fear, anxiety orchallenges arise, remember that
you have the power to managethem.
(08:27):
Just remember most things thatupset us or make us anxious come
from our imagination.
They're like, I would say, baddreams with our eyes open.
You know that little thing thatkeeps provoking you is not real
.
Remember that.
(08:49):
Another valid point is thinkingthat when you achieve your goals
, that you will be happy.
Of course, it's not true.
This is actually the oppositeof the truth.
You need to find happiness now,in your current circumstances.
Once you understand and managethese challenges, then you can
(09:12):
find genuine happiness.
Okay, you know, you may heargurus on the internet say do you
want to become the 2.0 versionof yourself, reaching your
dreams and making money?
Blah, blah, blah.
But it doesn't work like that.
First you need to understandhow to reach your 2.0, which
means being at peace withyourself, okay.
(09:34):
2.0, which means being at peacewith yourself Okay.
Once you are at peace withyourself, then we can discuss
the 3.0 version of you, the 4.0,whatever.
So the one who desires somefinancial goal as well?
Okay.
But first you need to be happy.
Before that, you must findinner peace and happiness,
otherwise you will never betruly happy.
Okay, regardless of how muchmoney you will make or how many
(09:57):
children you will have with yourpartner.
Believing that externalachievements can bring you true
happiness is delusional.
It simply doesn't work that way.
Okay.
Number four awareness.
Who are you when God, theuniverse or whatever science
brought you in the world?
They gave you a gift, okay, probably several gifts.
(10:19):
So what are these gifts?
Have you discovered them andhow can you use them to make
yourself and those around youhappy.
So the journey to successbegins with awareness of our
ability to analyze our own minds.
So once we achieve thisawareness, we start to
understand what we want to dowith our lives.
(10:41):
Okay, self-awareness is theability, guys, to objectively
evaluate yourself.
When this happens, you gain adeeper understanding of yourself
and what you can donate to theworld.
Gain a deeper understanding ofyourself and what you can donate
to the world.
So, before rushing intosomething, take time to
understand what you are trulycapable of, what you desire and
(11:02):
what gives you energy.
We always talk about energy inthis podcast.
Okay, what gives you energy?
Number five unwanted thoughts.
Five unwanted thoughts.
So when we were younger, weoften wanted to become, you know
, the next Neil Armstrong orFreddie Mercury, and our
thoughts were only our own.
(11:23):
As we grew older, externalinfluences from family, friends,
partners and our own doubtsclouded our minds.
So it is important to clearyour mind Now.
I don't remember where I readthis, but imagine your dreams
and goals as being visiblethrough a window.
So, as a child, that window isclear and clean, but over time,
(11:47):
it becomes dirty with thoughtsof others, okay, or on your own
doubts.
So you need to clear thatwindow, guys, we have the
ability to decide whatinformation we allow into our
minds.
Remember that, okay, a greatcoping tool is to first, quickly
consider your own thoughts.
(12:09):
Second, trust your instinctsbut verify them.
And number three, test yourimpressions to avoid making
decisions based on false oremotional information.
While it's essential to listento other opinions and brainstorm
with others becausebrainstorming is very important,
(12:30):
okay but it's also important tomake a filter.
So you must first listen toyourself and your own intuition,
okay, and then you have theability to listen others.
Number six the right action.
You often hear people on socialmedia, you know, urging you to
(12:55):
act now or questioning what youare waiting for to achieve your
dreams, and this is very it's avery pressing situation, okay,
the truth is that it is moreimportant to act in the right
way rather than just to actfastly, impulsively.
(13:16):
So, while it is essential totest and try different
approaches to learn how to takethe right actions, remember that
your time, as we said before,is a valuable resource.
So people often underestimatedthe significance of time.
We are not immortals.
(13:38):
Understand that.
Think of it like, like anarcher, guys.
All right.
So at first you learn how tohold the bow and you practice a
little bit, you know, but aftera while, your goal is to aim
better.
Another important point toconsider is the pleasure you can
have from your actions.
The positive energy you gain iscrucial for moving forward,
(14:01):
especially during difficultmoments, okay.
Another point is you shouldtake pleasure from the right
actions you choose to pursue, rather than solely focusing on
the results that may come fromthose actions.
I'm going to repeat again youshould take pleasure from the
(14:21):
right actions you choose topursue, rather than solely
focusing on the results that maycome from those actions,
because, guys, these last onesare not going to give you the
right energy to move forward sofar, okay.
So our ambition should not belimited to winning.
(14:43):
It should also include findingjoy in our journey.
I understand, I understand itis difficult, and even if I say
that, right, it is also hard forme to behave Honestly.
I realized that sometimes Ishould enjoy my journey more.
So, no worries, you and I areon the same boat, guys, but just
(15:04):
try, try, because this is veryimportant.
Number seven problem solving.
So, on your journey to achieveyour dreams, you will absolutely
face various obstacles, okay.
However, don't forget that youhave the right tools to overcome
these challenges.
(15:25):
Now, what are these tools?
They include asking for help.
Another one is having a safetynet, such as a job to sustain
yourself while you build yourfuture, and another one is using
your passion to manage minorobstacles.
I'm going to make an example.
So if you feel overwhelmed bywhat you're trying to build, but
(15:49):
, at the same time, you enjoygoing to the gym or run, it
might be the perfect time to hitthe gym for some stress relief.
Okay, so it is also importantto surround yourself with
positive people who can provideyou with the right energy to
move forward as well.
So brainstorming with the rightpeople can help unlock new
(16:11):
ideas and relieve the tension.
But, as I said before, guys, just remember to listen on your
own thought.
Okay, so that's very important.
Number eight purpose yourpurpose.
So the Stoics believe thateverything in nature people,
(16:34):
animals and even the smallestthings has a role.
Okay, so find your role in theworld, find your purpose.
It is important to give goodvalue to the people around you.
Okay, but you can't help othersif you don't take action for
yourself, so if you don't helpyourself first.
(16:55):
So wake up, get to work and doyour part.
Think about these questionswhat are you truly devoted to
and what are you doing and, importantly, why?
So by reflecting on thesequestions, you can find your
purpose and start living it.
(17:17):
Number nine pragmatism.
You know, when you tellyourself I need money to achieve
that, or I need the rightenvironment to study this, or I
don't know, I don't have enoughtools around me to achieve that,
(17:39):
I mean what do you mean exactly?
Be honest with yourself.
Okay, do you actually need whatyou're asking for to reach your
goal?
So to move forward, you need toadopt a pragmatic mindset.
Number 10, fortitude andresilience.
If you spend a week or even amonth experiencing poverty,
(18:01):
hunger.
Experiencing poverty, hunger, isolation or other fears, those
situations may start to feelnormal and you don't get scared
anymore.
Example you might think youcan't wake up earlier to achieve
your goals, right, because oflack of sleep or self-doubt.
Yet if your boss changed yourschedule and requires you to
(18:23):
wake up early, yeah, of courseyou may complain initially,
maybe on the first or secondMonday after rest weekend, yes,
but then you're going to be fine.
You know you're going toeventually adapt.
Why is that?
Because we reinforce ourselvesand our bodies are more
resilient than we think.
So if others can say what youmust do, why?
(18:48):
And then you do, of course, whycannot you do the same for
yourself, okay?
Number 11, virtue and kindness.
Any challenging situations canimprove with love, empathy and
understanding, even when youdisagree with someone.
(19:08):
Okay, so always choose love andtry to see the best in people.
But how can this be beneficialfor your journey?
Simple Love and positivefeelings provide you with energy
okay, good energy while hateand negativity drain you,
leading you to accomplishnothing.
Remember that.
(19:29):
Number 12, acceptance.
Every event in our lives isobjective.
Okay, it is our opinions thatdecide if that event is good or
bad.
So accepting the opinions ofothers, even if you don't agree,
can improve or lower yourenergy.
(19:49):
So you have to be careful.
Remember we cannot controlexternal circumstances we said
that before but we can controlour attitudes and responses to
those events.
Number 13.
Meditation on mortality.
Many people fear death and tryto avoid thinking about it,
(20:10):
myself included.
Yeah, I fear dying, but Irealize that what I truly fear
is not leaving a mark on thisworld.
However, that fear shouldn'tdominate us.
You know, in the end, we allshare the same fate, guys.
Death treats everyone equally.
So every story concludes thesame way, but the journey we
(20:34):
take is something we havecontrol over, so keep moving
forward.
Now, before doing a recap, Iwould like to highlight an
example for you Nelson Mandela'slife.
All right, we talked before.
I just mentioned before in thebeginning, and Nelson Mandela's
(20:57):
life is a great example of howstoic ideas can help people
overcome big challenges andachieve their dreams.
So Mandela, when he was inprison for 27 years, he faced
very difficult conditions, butinstead of giving up, he stayed
strong and calm.
He focused on what he couldcontrol and accepted what he
(21:21):
couldn't.
He once said Courage is notabsence of fear, but the victory
of it over it.
So Mandela also had greatself-discipline.
He was always on time andcontrolled his emotions.
He believed that Africa neededdiscipline and wanted to be a
(21:41):
role model.
So by following these stoicideas, mandela turned his
suffering into strength and inthe end, he helped bring peace
and democracy to his country.
So his story shows that withresilience and self-control,
guys, we can overcome you knowchallenges and reach our goals.
(22:02):
Now, what did we do in thisepisode?
Let's make a small smart recap,okay?
So in this episode, we explorehow stoic wisdom can help you
achieve your inspiration with astronger mindset.
Here I would like to share arecap of the key ideas, resumed
in four simple, short concepts, and how they empower you.
(22:29):
So the first one is master yourreactions.
So you can't control everythingin life okay, but you can
control how you respond.
So by shifting focus fromexternal events to your own
action and mindset, you can takeback your power.
Number two turn obstacles intogrowth.
(22:51):
So challenges and setbacks arenot impediments, they are
lessons.
When you embrace difficultiesas opportunities to grow, guys,
nothing can truly hold you back.
Number three detach fromopinions and focus on your path.
So in this case, it is morelike, let's say what others
(23:14):
think is outside your control,okay.
It's more like accepting whatyou can control and what you
cannot.
So in this case, you need to befocused on your purpose, make
decisions based on your valuesand don't waste energy on
external judgments, because theexternal judgments are something
(23:35):
that you cannot control.
All right.
Number four take action withoutfear.
So worrying about failure orseeking perfection slows you
down, guys.
Sometimes I think I'm too muchperfect.
I try to be too much perfect inwhat I do, but I also know that
(23:59):
it slows me down sometimes.
So true progress comes fromconsistent action, even if it's
imperfect.
Okay.
So if you apply theseprinciples, uh, these 13 keys,
you develop a mindset that keepsyou moving forward.
Okay, no matter the challenges.
So, instead of feelingpowerless, you become the one in
(24:23):
control.
Now I want to hear from you whatstoic principle resonated with
you the most guys.
How will you use it to pushforward in your journey?
Let me know in the comments.
Don't forget it, and if thisepisode gave you value, share it
(24:43):
with someone who needs to hearit.
Your support not only helps me,as you know, but can also make
a difference in someone else'slife.
So share it.
Share it.
Share it.
Remember, control what you can, keep taking action and trust
the process.
Thanks for being part of theJourney to Success family, and
see you in the next episode.
(25:04):
Cheers.
