Sarita Bernadette (00:54):
Hi. I'm Sarita Bernadette, and welcome
back to Joy in Every Step. I'mglad you're here. I'm so glad
that you've taken a little bitof time out of your day to take
a listen wherever you're joiningus from welcome, welcome. In the
last episode, we talked aboutquieting the noise of regrets

(01:14):
and we shared a couple ofpoints.
Those points included theconclusion many of us have come
to and that is if we had it todo all over again, we would make
different decisions. We wouldmake different choices, right?
Along with that we shared acouple of stories from the Word
of God that reminded us about animportant piece of dealing with

(01:37):
regrets and that is repentance. We also stress the importance of
allowing the lessons from saidregrets to teach us something.
The lessons we learned caninform future decisions.
We closed with this scripture inthat episode. It's a scripture

(01:58):
from Philippians four and eight. Finally, brothers and sisters,
whatever is true, whatever ishonorable, whatever is just,
whatever is pure, whatever ispleasing, whatever is
commendable, if there is anyexcellence and if there is

(02:18):
anything worthy of praise, thinkabout these things. The Apostle
Paul admonished us to turn ourthoughts away from the things
that cause us to be anxious andinstead think on the things that
are worthy of our time. So let'stalk more about regrets today.

(02:41):
I did get some feedback fromthat last episode so I want to
continue with that and just digin a little bit more today
specifically moving beyondregrets, getting over it if you
will. Peter showed up in thelast episode as an example of
someone from the Word of God whohad to quiet the noise of his

(03:03):
regrets and then move beyondthem. Peter had a huge
assignment. Peter was forgivenby Jesus, and when you read the
story, you see that Jesus knewwhat was coming. He told Peter
about it and Peter had toforgive himself so he could move
into the next chapter of hisassignment and find joy and

(03:26):
fulfillment there as he walkedit out.
He had to let go of the guilt,he had to let go of the shame
that he felt, and you know hefelt it. Peter took his role as
a disciple seriously. He waspassionate about it. When Jesus
told Peter that he knew he wouldbe the one to betray him, Peter

(03:50):
declared, Even if I have to diewith you, I will never disown
you. Yes, that's what he said.
That's a pretty passionatestatement, wouldn't you think?
His love for Jesus was evidentwhen the soldiers came to arrest
him, when they came to arrestJesus, Peter was the one who was

(04:12):
so determined to defend Jesusthat he drew his sword and he
cut off the ear of the highpriest's servant. Cut off his
ear. That's some passion. Canyou imagine the remorse and the
regret that Peter must have feltafter displaying that kind of

(04:34):
passion and still succumbing tofear and denying that he ever
knew Jesus?
That was quite a burden tocarry. God knows how heavy our
burdens can get. But the truthis, we are not meant to carry
them alone. We are not meant tocarry them for long either. Once

(04:59):
you have asked forgiveness fromGod, once you have asked
forgiveness, you have to acceptand embrace that forgiveness and
you have to shift your focusaway from what went wrong.
Your thinking has to shift towhat's going well and how you

(05:19):
might keep and gain momentum asyou move forward. That's where
faith comes in. It takes faithto move beyond regrets. It takes
faith to believe you've beenforgiven. It takes faith to
believe what the Lord says aboutyou when you're when what you're

(05:39):
seeing contradicts that.
Sometimes it does. Faith is whatyou need to change your mind.
You have to stop wallowing inregrets and start walking in the
joy of the Lord and that takesfaith. You're going to need to
activate your faith in order todo that. I remembered something

(06:03):
in a story found in the firstchapter of John and it involves
Peter and the disciples.
In this particular story, Peterand the disciples go fishing in
the sea at Galilee and theylabor all night long. You might
have heard this story. Theylabor all night long to no

(06:23):
avail. They caught nothing, notone fish. In the morning, Jesus
calls out to them from the shoreand he tells them to move their
nets to the other side of theboat.
The disciples don't even realizethat it's Jesus even when he

(06:44):
calls out. He says, friends, didyou catch anything? In another
translation he calls to themchildren but they don't know
it's him. They don't even knowit's him even after he calls
them friends and after he callsthem his children. They don't
figure it out until after theyfollow his instructions and this

(07:08):
net is so full that they can'thaul it into the boat.
Then John says to Peter, that'sthe Lord. And verse seven says,
when Simon Peter heard that itwas the Lord, he put on his

(07:28):
outer garment for he had takenit off and he jumped into the
sea. Note a couple of thingshere. John, as the Bible calls
him, the disciple whom Jesusloved, recognized Jesus. I
believe John recognized thatlove that he had known when he

(07:49):
had walked with the Lord.
And then look at Peter'sresponse. He jumps at the chance
to get to Jesus, literally jumpsat the chance. He's the one who
he had betrayed. And instead ofrunning away or cowering, he
leaps into the water and makeshis way toward Jesus. I believe

(08:14):
Peter saw an opportunity there,an opportunity to move on.
We have to be on the lookout forour chance to get over that
thing that's holding us back. Asincere desire for it is going
to the Lord and asking forforgiveness and believing that

(08:35):
the Lord is going to setsomething in motion for you.
Know that it may not look justlike what you expect and just
because you don't see it doesn'tmean it isn't being worked out.
You have to have faith. You maynot receive an apology from that
person.

(08:56):
Listen, if it's something thatyou did, if it's a mistake that
you made, you know, you may wantto apologize, but the
opportunity may not come likeyou want it to come. If somebody
did something to you, you maywant an apology, but you may not
get it from that person. Butknow that God can send comfort

(09:19):
and reassurance from someone orsomewhere else. He can send
comfort and reassurance fromsomeone or something that you
never expected. You may not geta chance to apologize again in
the way that you had envisioned, but God may create something

(09:40):
totally unexpected out of thesituation.
Just be on the lookout, Be infaith. Know that God will
surely, surely make a way foryou to move on. The story in
John 21 tells us the discipleswere all in a boat. Remember
that part? That part'ssignificant.
They were in a boat. Many of usare in the same boat. Listen,

(10:05):
listen, in the New Testamentboats are symbolic of our faith
journey. As we move through thissea of life, I'll call it, we do
all that we can to fortify ourboats right. We work on building
our faith throughout our lives.
It's our faith that pleases God.It's interesting that the Bible

(10:27):
records Peter as the one whoabandons the boat and gets out
into the water. That took somefaith. He had some faith already
and they were navigating thesea. Are you hearing me with
your spirit?
They were already doing somenavigating, but Peter had to
stretch his faith just a littlefurther. Peter stretched his

(10:48):
faith. He had to be confidentthat the Lord would receive him
when he reached the shore. Wehave to activate our faith as we
move beyond regrets. And again,I'm talking about the mistakes
we make and the things thathappen to us that are not our
fault.
Both can cause us distress. Ibelieve God called Peter to come

(11:12):
out of his regrets at thatmoment. And he, Peter, answered
the call. His faith was rewardedby the Lord. When God calls us
out, we have to come out.
The other disciples I notedchose to remain in the boat but

(11:32):
they still made their way to theshore with that huge haul of
fish dragging behind them. Theytoo recognized that it was the
Lord who called out to them andled them to that great fishing
spot on the sea. Then Jesusprepared a great fish fry on the

(11:55):
beach I like to call it. Pleaseyou have to read the story for
yourselves and see what you getfrom it. It has blessed me so
many times over.
Each time I read it I getsomething new and fresh. Let's
visit some additional scripturesthat will inform our journey as

(12:15):
we do what Peter did and that ismove beyond the regrets and
embrace what God has planned. InPhilippians three
thirteen-fourteen Paul writes,No, brothers, I am still not all
I should be, but I am bringingall my energies to bear on this

(12:39):
one thing, forgetting the pastand looking forward to what lies
ahead. I strained to reach theend of the race and received the
prize for which God is callingus up to heaven because of what
Christ Jesus did for us. Paulsays, he's not where he wants to

(13:00):
be, but he's not where he waseither.
Anybody relate? He says he hasto forget all the things that
took place in his life prior tothis current assignment, this
current moment, this currentseason. He declares he is so
committed to the mission that heis straining. One translation

(13:21):
says he's pressing, pressinginto the race with his eye on
the finish line. He's leaning inand he's got his eye on the
prize.
So we too need to be determinedto look forward and to move only
in that direction. Romanseight:one is so direct as it

(13:44):
states simply, therefore thereis now no condemnation for those
who are in Christ Jesus. Ishared that in the last episode.
This scripture is so phenomenal. It reminds us that feelings of
condemnation do not come fromGod.

(14:04):
Nothing you have done can erasethe love God has for you. You
will always, always be a part ofhis plan. That eighth chapter of
Romans is chock full ofwonderful reminders about who we
are in Christ. It talks aboutthe fact that because we belong
to God, we have access to thepower of a life giving spirit

(14:27):
that frees us from the power ofsin that leads to death. It no
longer has the power that it didbefore Jesus Christ came and
gave his life for us.
Paul goes on to say that thoseled by the spirit of God are the
children of God. He reminds usabout Holy Spirit. He says Holy

(14:49):
Spirit is with us to help us inour weaknesses. He reiterates
there that we have been chosenby God. Friends, we are the
chosen ones.
It's as simple as that. I sharedverse one a moment ago and if we
drop all the way down to verses35 through 37 in that same

(15:10):
eighth chapter of Romans, weread, Can anything ever separate
us from Christ's love? Does itmean he no longer loves us if we
have trouble or calamity or arepersecuted or hungry or
destitute or in danger orthreatened with death? Verse 36,

(15:31):
As the scriptures say, for yoursake we are killed every day, we
are being slaughtered likesheep. No, despite all these
things overwhelming victory isours through Christ who loved
us.
There is nothing that canseparate us from the love of
Christ. There is no mistake bigenough or bad enough to separate

(15:55):
us from the love of God. Hang onto that as you move on friends,
keep that top of mind. And itmay take some work. So let's go
back to Philippians four andeight and this time, I'm gonna
share it in the passiontranslation.
It says, keep your thoughtscontinually fixed on all that is

(16:18):
authentic and real, honorableand admirable, beautiful and
respectful, pure and holy, merciful and kind, and fasten
your thoughts on every gloriouswork of God praising him always.
Fasten your thoughts. One has towork on one's thinking. Think

(16:39):
about what you're thinkingabout. Is the stuff in your head
worth spending time on?
That's a good question to askyourself from time to time
friends. Is the stuff in my headright now worth spending my time
on? Think on the good thingsknowing that you have weapons
for fighting those thoughts thattry to creep in that don't serve

(17:03):
your greater good. Thosethoughts that don't honor God.
Second Corinthians chapter 10verses four through five reads,
we use God's mighty weapons, notworldly weapons, to knock down
the strongholds of humanreasoning and to destroy false

(17:25):
arguments.
We find our weapons inmeditating on scripture and
turning those scriptures intoprayers. Yes. Try that if you
haven't already. Great weapon touse. Use scripture to pray.
Pray the scriptures. Verse fivereads, we destroy every proud

(17:46):
obstacle that keeps people fromknowing God. We capture their
rebellious thoughts and teachthem to obey Christ. We capture
the thoughts that try to creepin and make themselves dominant.
Capture them and knock themdown.
Yep. We choose violence. When wecome, when it comes to the

(18:09):
thoughts that don't obey Christ, when it comes to the thoughts
that choose to that that comeand make us anxious, yep, we
capture them, we snatch themdown, and we knock them down.
Yes, moving beyond regretsrequires that we do some serious
work, my friends. And sometimes, sometimes, all you have as

(18:34):
you're going through thisprocess is your faith.
John twenty and twenty ninesays, Jesus said to him, have
you believed because you haveseen me? Blessed are those who
have not seen and yet have cometo believe. We don't always see
the work going on. We have tojust simply believe the Lord. We

(18:58):
believe him and we trust himwholeheartedly.
Even when we can't see what he'sdoing, we know our God is
working on our behalf. Someoneonce said, Even when I can't
track Him, I still trust Him.That gives us joy and it gives
us hope. Lamentations threetwenty one-twenty six But this I

(19:24):
call to mind and therefore Ihave hope. The steadfast love of
the Lord never ceases.
His mercies never come to anend. They are new every morning.
Great is your faithfulness. TheLord is my portion, says my
soul. Therefore, I will hope inHim.

(19:48):
We can move beyond regrets whenwe understand that the love of
the Lord is steady andconsistent. It never ends. He's
always there. As we move ahead,we look to Him. We maintain our
hope in the Lord.
Moving beyond regrets is aprocess and friends, it's a

(20:11):
journey. But there's joy on theother side of the sea. Thank you
for listening today. Thank youfor joining us for Joy in Every
Step. I'm Sarita Bernadette andI'm so grateful you chose to
