Hi there. I'm your host, Fondue.
It's Cheesy.
In this week's episode, we'retalking all about sweet cheeses.
Sweet cheeses.
We're gonna talk about Dutchcheese, Norwegian cheese, and Nepali
(00:26):
cheese. We're talking aboutcandy, chocolate, gummies and even
more. We're gonna about abrand new cheese museum and we're
gonna tell a very cheesy joke.Stay tuned for episode 179, sweet
cheeses on Just Cheesy thepodcast. Did you know that there
(00:51):
are actually cheeses out therethat without anything extra taste
kind of sweet?
Really?
Well, apparently there are.According to rochester.thecheeselady.net
they talk about somethingcalled Rome. Romano.
Pradera Roomano.
Nope, not Romano. Roomano. This is a Dutch Gouda like cheese.
They say it's pasteurizedcow's milk cheese. It's sweet, salty
(01:13):
and butterscotchy. This cheesegets matured for over 36 months and
they say it develops a mutedcaramel color and it has an intense
sweet flavor. They say it canbe grated like Parmesan or it could
work in chunks with cocktails. The Norwegians have something they
call brown cheese or Brunost. But did you know it's actually not
(01:35):
even and cheese?
It's not.
That's right. According to aForbes.com article, this Brown cheese
is made when whey.
No way.
After the milk has beencurdled and strained, this whey is
boiled down for hours and Iguess the milk sugars caramelize,
creating a rich, sweet fudgelike block. It's then cooled, shaped
and sliced. The most populartype in Norway, which I can't pronounce,
(01:58):
combines both cows and goat'smilk for a milder flavor. There's
another one made entirely fromcow's milk and it's sweeter and creamier.
No way.
They say it's too sweet andtangy to be cheese, but too savory
to be candy. They say it alsowalks a fine line when it comes to
health.
Really?
It contains a lot of calcium, protein and vitamin B. But they also
(02:18):
say it has a high sugarcontent because of the caramelization.
It's commonly sliced thin andit's served on bread. And they say
on the weekends it's actuallymelted gently on warm waffles and
served with a spoonful of jam.
Yum.
Some people melt it into asauce and they serve it with things
like like mushrooms or mashedpotatoes or even game meats like
(02:39):
venison. Some people add it toa stew, a Norwegian hunter stew.
Sometimes it's been added tothe top of apple pie. And they say
while it may sound unlikely,it has even gained popularity in
South Korea as a pizzatopping. Did you know that there's
something called chocolate cheese?
Really?
According to cheesebox.comthere is a unique cheese. It's called
(03:02):
chocolate cheese, of course. It's cheddar and cream cheeses mixed
with cocoa and walnuts. Andthey say it's a dessert cheese, almost
like fudge.
Yum.
And speaking of fudge, CabotCreamery actually has a recipe for
cheddar cheese fudge.
Wow.
It calls for 8 ounces ofcheddar, two sticks of unsalted butter,
vanilla, a cup of instant nonfat dry milk powder, a half a cup
(03:26):
of cocoa powder, and five tosix cups of powdered sugar. Cabot
Creamery is not a sponsor.
Nope.
(04:23):
But if they were, the ad wouldgo right here. Did you know there's
a couple of different creamcheese candy recipes? According to
Toriavy.com there's one thatlooks almost like a peanut butter
cookie. The author of thearticle suggests that this could
actually be a pretty fun candyto use at Easter because you can
add food coloring and make itkind of vibrant and it seems relatively
(04:46):
simple. It calls for a quartercup of unsalted butter, 8 ounces
of cream cheese, 4 to 5 cupsof powdered sugar, and food coloring.
You melt the butter and thecheese, you add the powdered sugar,
turns into a dough, and thenyou can shape it like you want.
Oh, wow.
At that point, when it coolsoff a little bit, you add the food
coloring and they smushed itdown with a fork just like you would
(05:07):
a peanut butter cookie.
Yum.
According tosavoryexperiments.com there is something
called a merry mint and it'salso a cream cheese candy.
Yum.
They say some people call thembridal shower mints or bridal mints
or even Christmas mints. Thisone is a no cook recipe and they
describe it as eating frostingoff of a cake.
Nice.
This one calls for 4 ounces ofcream cheese, vanilla, vanilla, 3
(05:30):
cups of powdered sugar, 1 to 2tablespoons of heavy cream, and some
food coloring.
Like frosting?
Yeah. That sounds just like frosting.
Yeah.
You mix it together like youwould with frosting, you put it in
a piping bag, you squeeze itout into little dollops on some parchment
paper, and they're so cute. Ifyou use the rosette piping tip, it
looks like little flowers. Oh,they look so good.
(05:52):
Yeah.
According to Japanese snackreviews.blogspot.com and MarinFood.co
JP There is something calledcheese candy in Japan, but there
is actually nothing at allcandy about this really. It's in
a size and a package whichlooks just like hard candy. Apparently
the idea behind it is to offerup a snack so people can consume
(06:16):
a calcium rich product. TheMarin food website has it in different
flavors. There's plainCamembert, smoked and almond. And
speaking of things that aren'texactly candy, there's something
called chirpy.
Oh yeah.
According totimesofindia.indiatimes.com the cheese
is from Nepal and it comes ina soft and a hard version.
(06:37):
Really?
The soft version is used as afilling or in soup. And the hard
version is actually thehardest cheese in the world. We've
talked about it a few timesbefore. A lot of places in the world
actually sell it as dogtreats, but humans can eat it too.
Here's how you eat it. Youhave to take a bite or a piece and
you let it sit in your mouthfor about five to seven minutes.
(07:00):
Holy cow.
So that it can have enoughmoisture for you to begin chewing
it. And they say if you don'tfollow the steps, you may not enjoy
the flavors or break a tooth. They say it can be chewed for quite
a while and you chew it likegum. In fact, it can last for nearly
three hours.
Holy cow.
The cheese is made of yak milkand it's been made in Nepal in the
Himalayan region forcenturies. And they say it can keep
(07:24):
for a very long time. And theymean up to 20 years. You can buy
it online on Malco store andyou can even buy it in dog treat
form on Amazon.
Nice.
We've got another treat thathas nothing to do with cheese, but
it definitely has to do withcandy. Kraft macaroni and cheese
shaped gummies. That's right.I said it. Kraft Mac and cheese gummies.
(07:47):
Candynation.com has a box ofthese bad boys and they're going
for 3.95 each. We actuallyhave a box of this very same candy
and we're going to try someand show them on our Instagram page.
It's time for my favoritesegment this week in Cheese. Did
you know the country of Turkeyhas opened its very first cheese
(08:08):
museum? This museum has onlybeen open for three months of 2025
and it's already attracted25,000 people. The region called
Cars is recognized as theworld's 18th cheese route. And a
cheese route is a significantdest for cheese lovers. Visitors
of the museum can learn abouttraditional cheese making techniques,
(08:31):
and they have exhibits thatfeature historical tools, milk churns,
and production processes. There are quite a few different cheese
routes in the world. There'sone in France, Italy, Switzerland,
Spain, Greece, Wisconsin,California. There's one in the Middle
east and even in India. Ithink we should have our own. We've
got the Just Cheesy thePodcast cheese route. On our website,
(08:54):
there's a map of all thecheese places we've visited in the
United States. You shouldcheck them out.
I'm ready for a joke. Fondue.
Okay. Why do sweet cheesesmake good friends?
I don't know.
Because they never desert you.
Oh.
Get it? Dessert.
Yep.
Sweet cheese.
It's silly.
