Just Cheesy, the podcastpresented by Just Cheesy Productions.
It's your host, fondue,
and your favorite cheese ball, Cheesy.
Are you ready for the quickand cheesy?
Duh. Does cheese melt in the wood?
Uh, I can honestly say I don't know.
Yeah, you do.
This week, we're talking aboutrolling down a hill with cheese.
(00:23):
Uh oh, a new Wendy's cheeseburger.
Yummy.
And of course, we're telling acheesy joke.
Of course.
Welcome to our summer series,Cheesy Bites.
This one's called Rolling.
Guess what's back this coming Monday.
Rolling.
Yep, it's cheese rollingseason again at Cooper's Hill. We've
talked about this in episode133 and a couple of others before
(00:45):
that. We've got a video in ourshow, Notes from animated science
on YouTube. He's got a vantagepoint at the top of the hill. And
man, does this thing look steep.
So steep.
The contest goes back 600 years.
Holy cow.
And the first written evidenceof this cheese rolling was found
in a message to the Gloucestertown Crier in 1826.
(01:05):
What?
According to itv.com, thishill is 180 meters steep. Or for
us in America, that's 590ft.
Whoa.
The rules, they're simple, okay? A three kilogram wheel of cheese
is rolled down the hill, okay? And that cheese, well, it can reach
70 miles an hour.
Holy cow.
People throw themselves downthe hill to try to catch it.
(01:28):
Why?
And according to this article, there haven't been any recorded deaths
associated with the event.
Oh, my.
But broken bones? There havebeen plenty. And according to writeonsports.com
the average is 33 injuries per100 contestants. The goal is to catch
the cheese, but if no onecatches the cheese, it's the first
(01:50):
to the bottom that wins.
Whoa.
And what do you win?
You say, I don't know.
A wheel of cheese. This year, two former champions are going to
be honored. Izzy John was 13years old when he first chased a
cheese down the Hill in 1956.Of course, he broke his ankle on
the first race. He won 14cheeses before retiring from the
(02:10):
competition in his mid-20s.And despite his passion for the sport,
he hated cheese. So he alwaysgave one of the cheeses to the local
old people's home. Accordingto the BBC.com, the first downhill
race will be held in hismemory. The second will go to Steve
Brain.
Wow.
He passed away in 2018. Andbetween them both, they won over
(02:31):
30 cheeses. And one of Steve'sdying wishes was his ashes to be
scattered at the top of thehill. Oh, my. His friend Lee Chapman
said they blew everywhere, sohe'll always be here.
Oh, no.
(03:35):
Gloucester Cheese is not asponsor, but if it was, the ad would
go right here. It's time formy favorite segment this week in
cheese. According todispatch.com Dublin, Ohio based Wendy's
has a new burger and this oneis geared toward cheese lovers.
Yay.
Instead of a traditional bunchof, this bad boy has a hamburger
(03:56):
patty and it's sandwichedbetween two grilled cheese sandwiches.
Holy cow.
First of all, there's apicture here and it says both buns
are actual grilled cheesesandwiches. Now they, they do kind
of look like just two bunswith some melted cheese in between.
So calling it a grilled cheesein my opinion, maybe not quite as
grilled cheese as you wouldthink. However, it says the buns
(04:18):
are both grilled cheesesandwiches has a quarter pound of
beef, melted cheese, caramelized onions and mayo. And
for the calorie conscious us,here goes. The single grilled cheese
cheeseburger is 690 calories. The double 990. The triple, of course,
is the highest at 1300 calories.
(04:39):
Holy cow.
But Americans don't get tooexcited because it's only slated
to be sold in Canadian stores. No, you might be able to get across
the border to get one ofthese. There's Windsor, Ontario,
which is just across fromDetroit. And Fort Erie, Ontario,
which is across from Buffalo. There's a link in our show notes
so you can see what this yummysandwich looks like.
(05:01):
I'm ready for a joke fondue.
Okay. Why was Aged Cheddardisqualified from the race?
I don't know.
Because it crumbled under thepressure. Get it? Crumbled under
pressure?
Yeah, that was cute.
I think that one was prettygood. And it was a little bit cheesy.
Thanks for listening toRolling. Our first ever Cheesy Bites
(05:24):
summer series.
Thank you.
We'll be back next week withanother fun sized episode of Cheesy
Bites.
And stay cheesy, everybody.
