(00:02):
Just gd, the podcast presentedby Just Gigi Productions.
Hi there, it's Fondue, yourhost with the most.
And this week we're going totalk a little bit about Dreams are
Made of Cheese.
We're going to talk a littlebit about dreams.
Dreams are made of cheese.
Stop.
Who am I to stop it?

(00:25):
I think you all know exactlywhat we're going to be talking about
today.
Oh, yeah.
We're talking about cheese.
Dreams and nightmares EpisodeSweet Dreams.
Welcome to Cheese Bites.
I'm glad to see you got thatout of your system.
Sweet dreams are made of cheese.
Who am I to disabree?
Oh, awesome.
The Internet is buzzingbecause of a new study about nightmares

(00:47):
and cheese.
Oh, no, now this isn't new at all.
Yeah, we even covered it backin season two, episode 31.
Yeah, we did.
Apparently there's an oldwives tale and it stems back all
the way to 1843.
Holy cow.
And the book A Christmas Carol.
Whoa.
You know the story EbenezerScrooge gets visited by a few ghosts
and he claims at one point itmight have been because of a crumb

(01:09):
of cheese.
And there are so manydifferent studies about cheese and
nightmares.
So many.
Or at least dairy and nightmares.
Yeah.
The British Cheese Boardconducted a study in 2005 to find
out if cheese actually caused nightmares.
Did it?
They say this one may or maynot have been very scientific.
They had 200 volunteers.

(01:29):
They fed them 20 grams of cheese.
The people ate the cheeseabout a half an hour before bed.
They were asked to recordtheir dreams and sleep quality.
Okay.
Apparently there wasn't acontrol group.
Oh no.
They had 200 people.
And of the 200 people studied,67 recalled their dreams clearly.
But none of them reportedhaving bad dreams.
And if you remember, we foundthat this study said that Stilton

(01:51):
had very odd dreams where theytalked about teddy bears or warrior
kittens or vegetarian crocodiles.
Oh yeah, and cheddar madepeople dream about celebrities.
The new conducted by frontiersin psychology 1082 people participated
in an online survey to testspecific hypotheses on why people
perceive food affects their dreams.

(02:12):
Okay.
24.7% of the people said thatcertain foods worsened their dreams
and 20.1 said they improved them.
Oh, and 5.5% of theparticipants reported that food affected
their dreams.
Apparently the perceivedeffect of food on dreams was associated
with higher nightmare recall.
Oh, no.
In the introduction to thisstudy, they said that at twentiet

(02:33):
century, cartoonist publishedbizarre dreams that he thought were
frequently attributed tohaving eaten Welsh rarebit.
Basically, Melted cheese, toast.
They cite here a 2007 surveyof 49 participants.
Okay.
They said those who preferredorganic foods reported higher dream
recall, more recurring dreams, and dreams containing such themes
as flying.

(02:54):
They said the participants whopreferred fast food reported lower
dream recall and fewerrecurring dreams and nightmares.
Really?
According to a study conductedIn Canada in 2015, 396 students were
questioned on their sleep habits.
According to sciencefocus.comalmost half of them said that eating
late brought on nightmares ordisturbing dreams.
Oh no.

(03:14):
And 15% believed that certainfoods made their dreams more bizarre
or disturbing.
And In December of 2022, therewas a mirror.co.uk article that talked
about a poll of 2,000 adults.
43% of Brits believe the oldwives tale that cheese causes nightmares.
Oh boy.
They even named their topcheeses that cause these Nightma.

(03:37):
Really?
At number five they haveCheshire cheese.
Okay.
Number four, goat's cheese.
Okay.
Number three, Brie.
Number two, mozzarella.
And in the number one spot, they put cheddar.
Wow.
In that new study, Frontiersin Psychology, they found that 22%
of people blamed dairy fordisturbing dreams.
But most of them were lactoseintolerant or had food allergies.

(03:58):
And they found thatgastrointestinal distress, like gas
cramps or bloating mayinfluence the brain during sleep,
fueling nightmares.
The study suggests thatexperiencing gas or the pain from
it while you sleep can alteryour dreams, just like other bodily
sensations can affect dreaming.
A loud noise or a full bladdercan shape what you dream about, so

(04:18):
the internal discomfortbecomes part of your dream.
This is called dream incorporation.
The brain interprets physicalstimuli as part of the dream content.
So if your gut is twisting inknots from a late night cheese session,
your subconscious might spinit into a stressful or bizarre dream
sequence.
Hence the nightmare.
Wow.
Frontiers in Psychology is nota sponsor, but if they were, their

(04:39):
ad would go right here.

(05:33):
You know, cheesy.
One of the things I've learneddoing this podcast is if there is
a study proving one thing, there's a study disproving that same
one thing.
Yep.
Nightmares and cheese are no different.
According to the website forthe National Council on Aging, they
literally suggest cheese as afood that you can eat to help you
sleep.

(05:53):
What?
They claim that there arestudies that show a direct relationship
between cheese and sleep.
Really?
They Maybe it's because cheesecontains tryptophan and that's the
thing.
Like turkey when you get tiredat Thanksgiving dinner.
Yeah.
They say here if you don'thave a dairy intolerance, eating
A small snack of cheese mighthelp lull you into la la land.
A 2023 randomized controlledtrial published in Nutrients tested

(06:16):
whether consuming 20 grams ofa milk derived whey protein two hours
before bedtime would improvesleep in elite female rugby players.
This study claims thatparticipants fell asleep significantly
faster sleep efficiency, meaning they spent time asleep versus
time in bed.
Wow.
And benefits were attributedto high tryptophan levels.

(06:37):
Really?
There was another studyconducted between 2018 and 2019.
Researchers recruited andsurveyed 768 adults from China.
Wow.
MDPI.com talks about the studyassociations between milk intake
and sleep disorders.
They had the expectation, based on some cultural beliefs, that
dairy might cause disturbances.

(06:58):
Instead, results showed the opposite.
Regular milk consumption wasnot associated with more sleep problems.
It was actually linked tofewer sleep disturbances and better
subjective sleep quality.
Holy cow.
Ultimately, they said it mayactually support, not hinder, restful
sleep.
So does it give you nightmaresor not?
I'm no doctor, Nope.
So this is not advice.

(07:19):
No.
But from what I can tell, itreally depends.
If you're lactose intolerantor you eat a massive cheese plate
right before bed, your dreamsmight go off the rails.
Or you might feel sick to your stomach.
And perhaps if you don't havethose issues and you have a modest
snack at bedtime, it mightjust help you fall asleep.
I'm ready for a joke Fondue.
Okay, what's a cheese'sfavorite bedtime song?

(07:41):
Sweet Dreams are Made of cheese.
That's right.
You got it.
Yeah, I did.
It was good.
Yeah, it was good.
And a little bit cheesy.
