I'm your host, terry Cullums,and today is day nine of the 12
Days of Christmas series that weare working through.
Today we are going to talkabout celebrating your
achievements.
So, as we're thinking about thegoals that we're setting for

2024, I want you to beginthinking about celebrating
achievements along the way.
And as I was preparing fortoday's episode, I remembered a
book that I read recently wherethe woman had the woman in the
story had lost someone in a likea complicated relationship.
They were kind of in that onand off, they weren't really

(01:12):
recognized as a couple in theirsocial circle, and so when he
died tragically, her friends andeven her family didn't really
recognize or understand hergrief.
Two years after his death, shewas still grieving, she still
was dealing with trauma andpanic attacks, and she finally
sought therapy to help her dealwith it.

(01:33):
The counselor that she saw toldher she had something called
complicated grief.
So she began an intensivetherapy where every day she had
daily assignments to help herwork through some of her
triggers and her trauma, and shealso had to pick out something
that she would use to celebrateit when she actually hit that

(01:54):
goal, that assignment that shehad for the day.
They didn't have to becomplicated things.
Sometimes they were very simplethings like taking a walk on
the beach or going to get apedicure, or going out for a cup
of coffee with a friend, orreading part of a good book that
she was trying to read.
So, as I'm thinking about this,I'm thinking about you and how

you might fall into the scope ofthe audience that listens to
the podcast.
So most likely, you're a GenXer like me, and here's some
things that we know about Gen X.
We are referred to as theforgotten or invisible
generation.
We are the first generation tobe known as latchkey kids.
We were the least parented andthe least nurtured generation.

(02:44):
There is a likelihood that weare looking after both our
parents and our children, and wewere born at the same time when
women more women began workingout of the home, technology
started changing and divorcerates were on the rise.
So I'm not telling you this asan excuse for us to forego

(03:06):
celebrating our achievements andaccomplishments and our
milestones.
What I'm wanting to do, rather,is point out our tendencies to
maybe downplay your achievementsor not celebrate the
accomplishments.
There are so many benefits totaking the time and setting the

(03:27):
time aside to celebrate oursmall achievements.
It boosts morale, gives you apositive mental outlook.
Some studies even show that itmay be more beneficial to
celebrate your smallachievements along the way than
to wait to the end and celebratethe big one.
Celebrating motivates us tocontinue on our path.

(03:50):
It shows us that we're capableand boosts our self-confidence
and self-esteem.
It even helps us recognize ourown level of resilience.
So, as you're thinking aboutsetting your goals and your
accomplishments for the year, Iwould like you to take a moment
to do two things, or take a fewmoments to do two things.

(04:10):
Take some time to reflect onyour past accomplishments and
ask yourself did you celebratethem?
Did you wait till the very endor did you celebrate the small
steps and milestones that youreached along the way?
And, number two, also take sometime to write out a list of the
things that you would do tocelebrate those achievements

(04:32):
along the way.
I mean, I don't have a beachnear me, but I would definitely
love to celebrate by walking onthe beach.
I hope, if your intention is toset some goals for 2024, you
will think about some milestonesin your journey and celebrate
them along the way.
You definitely deserve it, andI'll wrap up today's episode by
