Today, we're going to explore the basics of volleyball.
Whether you've seen people playing volleyball at school, on
the beach, or even on TV, you might wonder how the game works,
what the rules are, and how you can get started.
So let's jump in and learn all about volleyball together.
First, let's talk about what volleyball actually is.
(00:51):
Volleyball is a team sport played with a ball and a net.
The main goal is to send the ball over the net and into the
other teams court so that they cannot return it.
Each team tries to prevent the ball from touching the ground on
their side while working together to send it back over
the net. It's a game that involves quick
thinking, teamwork and lots of movement.
Now let's look at where volleyball is played.
(01:14):
Volleyball can be played both indoors and outdoors.
Indoor volleyball is usually played on a wooden or synthetic
cord inside a gym, while beach volleyball is played on sand.
The size of the court is different for indoor and beach
volleyball, but the basic idea of the game stays the same.
Most school gyms have volleyballcourts, and many parks have sand
(01:34):
volleyball courts too. A standard volleyball court for
indoor games is shaped like a rectangle.
It measures 18 meters long and 9meters wide.
That's about as long as 2 schoolbuses placed end to end and as
wide as a small classroom. The net in the center divides
the court into two equal halves. For boys, the net is usually set
(01:56):
at a height of 2.43 meters, and for girls, it's 2.24 meters.
That's a little higher than the average door at home.
Next, let's talk about the teamsin traditional indoor
volleyball. Each team has six players on the
court at a time. These players have different
positions and roles, but they all work together to keep the
ball from touching the ground ontheir side.
(02:18):
The main positions are the setter, outside hitter, middle
blocker, opposite hitter, and libero.
Don't worry, we'll explain what these mean soon.
The game starts with a serve. The server stands behind the end
line and hits the ball over the net to the other team.
The serve can be underhand or overhand.
If you're just starting out, an underhand serve might feel
(02:40):
easier because you swing your arm from low to high and hit the
ball with your fist or open hand.
An overhand serve is when you toss the ball in the air and hit
it above your head, which can bemore powerful.
Once the ball is served, the receiving team's job is to keep
the ball off the ground and sendit back over the net.
The team can touch the ball up to three times before sending it
(03:01):
back. These three touches usually go
like this. First a pass, then a set, and
finally a spike or attack. Each player can only hit the
ball once in a row. Let's break down those 3 main
moves. The first move is the pass or
bump. This is usually the first
contact after a serve or an attack from the other team.
(03:22):
To bump you join your forearms together and use them to guide
the ball up into the air. Imagine your arms forming a flat
surface and you want the ball topop up high so your teammate can
reach it easily. The second move is the set.
The set is a gentle push of the ball using your fingertips.
The setter's job is to get underthe ball and push it up high and
(03:42):
close to the net so that anotherplayer can jump and hit it over.
Setting takes practice because you want the ball to go exactly
where your teammate needs it. The third move is the spike or
attack. This is when a player jumps and
hits the ball hard over the net into the other team's court.
The goal is to hit the ball where the other team can't reach
(04:03):
it. Spiking can be really exciting,
and it's one of the most dramatic parts of the game.
Besides those three moves, thereare a few other important skills
in volleyball. One is blocking.
Blocking happens at the net, andit's when a player jumps up with
their arms straight and tries tostop the ball from coming over.
If you block the ball well, it might fall right back into the
(04:25):
other team's court. Another skill is digging.
Digging is when you make a low, quick move to keep a hard hit
ball from touching the ground. This happens a lot when the
other team spikes the ball and your job is to dive or stretch
to keep the play going. Let's talk about the different
positions on the court. Each player has a role.
The setter is like the team's playmaker.
(04:46):
The setter touches the ball morethan anyone else and is
responsible for setting up the attackers.
The outside hitter is usually the main attacker, hitting the
ball from the left side of the court.
The middle blocker is great at blocking and also attacks from
the center. The opposite hitter plays on the
right side and helps with both attacking and blocking.
The libero is a special defensive player who wears a
(05:09):
different color jersey. The libero can attack the ball
above the net but is really goodat passing and digging.
Did you know that the libero position was added to volleyball
in 1998 to make the game more exciting and improve defense?
The libero can replace any back row player without needing to
tell the referee first, which helps the team stay strong on
defense. Now, how do you score points in
(05:31):
volleyball? A-Team scores a point when the
other team lets the ball touch the ground in their court, hits
the ball out of bounds, or makesa mistake like touching the net
or hitting the ball more than three times before sending it
over. In most games, you play to 25
points, but you have to win by at least 2 points.
If the score is tied at 24 to 24, the game continues until one
(05:54):
team leads by two points. Matches are usually best out of
five sets, and the last set is played to 15 points.
Volleyball has a rotation system.
After winning a point when the other team served, your team
rotates positions clockwise. This means everyone gets a turn
in each position, including serving.
It keeps the game fair and exciting.
(06:16):
Let's talk about the equipment. The main things you need to play
volleyball are a volleyball, a net, and a court.
Volleyballs are light and about the size of a soccer ball, but
they're made with a softer covering.
Indoor volleyballs are usually white, while beach volleyballs
can be colorful. Players usually wear comfortable
athletic clothes and special shoes that grip the floor well.
(06:37):
Some players wear knee pads to protect their knees when they
die for the ball. Did you know that the first
volleyball was made from the inside of a basketball?
Volleyball was invented in 1895 by a man named William G Morgan
in Massachusetts, USA. He wanted to create a new game
that was less rough than basketball but still fun and
active. He called it Mintonette at
(06:59):
first, but the name changed to volleyball because the main
action is volleying the ball back and forth.
Volleyball is played all over the world.
It's an Olympic sport, which means the best teams from
different countries compete every four years at the Olympic
Games. Millions of people watch these
matches on TV and some players become very famous for their
(07:19):
skills. If you want to try volleyball,
you don't need a lot of special equipment to get started.
You can practice passing and setting with a friend or even
against a wall. If you have a net, you can play
simple games at the park or beach.
Many schools have volleyball clubs or teams you can join.
Playing volleyball is a great way to make friends, stay active
(07:40):
and have fun. Here are some fun facts about
volleyball. The longest volleyball game ever
played lasted more than 85 hours.
That's over three days. In beach volleyball.
There are only two players on each team and the court is
smaller than an indoor volleyball.
The fastest volleyball serve ever recorded was more than 132
(08:01):
kilometers per hour, which is faster than most cars drive on a
city street. Volleyball helps you develop
important skills like teamwork, communication and quick
reflexes. Players have to talk to each
other, call out who's going for the ball, and make fast
decisions. It's a sport where everyone
needs to work together because 1great playoff and starts with a
(08:21):
good pass, then a set and then an attack.
To stay safe while playing volleyball, remember to warm up
before you start, stretch your muscles and drink plenty of
water. Always pay attention to your
teammates and keep an eye on theball.
If you're learning to dive or slide, knee pads can help
protect you from bumps and bruises.
Let's do a quick recap of what we learned today.
