The day Kevin Durant left Oklahoma City to join the Golden State Warriors changed everything. This episode of Sports Scar’d goes deep into that heartbreak with Thunder fan Devin Gross-Gaynair, who lived through every high and low of the KD era.

We start with the excitement of what it meant to watch Durant grow into a superstar in OKC. Devin shares what pulled him into Thunder fandom and why KD felt like more than just a player to that city.

From there, we revisit the collapse of the 2016 Western Conference Finals. Up 3–1 on the Warriors, the Thunder were a game away from the Finals. Then came Game 6. Then “Game 6 Klay.” Devin talks about where he was, what he saw, and how the mood changed as it all slipped away. Game 7 only made it worse. Those missed shots, the body language, and the shock of watching a season fall apart left scars that never fully healed.

The pain grew even sharper in July when Durant chose Golden State. Devin opens up about the exact moment he saw the headline and the raw anger of losing a franchise player to the very team that had just knocked them out. He remembers Stephen A. Smith’s famous rant and why, for Thunder fans, that move felt like betrayal.

We explore what it was like to watch KD in a Warriors jersey and see him dominate on a team that didn’t need him but benefited from him. Devin reflects on what those championships felt like, what he thinks KD was chasing, and how it changed the way Thunder fans looked at greatness.

The episode also celebrates Russell Westbrook’s MVP season in 2017, the revenge year that gave OKC something to hold on to. Devin talks about the emotional connection fans felt that year, the Cupcake Game, and how Russ helped people cope.

We close by looking at Durant’s journey after Golden State, from Brooklyn to Phoenix. Has time softened the sting? Has OKC’s own championship finally healed some of the wound? Devin wrestles with those questions, what forgiveness could look like, and what he would say to Durant if he ever had the chance.

This is the story of fandom, heartbreak, and the long road to closure.

Written and hosted by Kevin Pearce, Sports Scar’d gives space for fans to share how the moments that broke their hearts shaped their love for the game.
