Ep #79 -Ever wanted to start a band? Then this is your year! In 2025 we're all grabbing our favorite instruments and getting loud! We're also choosing joy—bold, defiant joy—in the face of Project 2025's looming threat.

They want to impose so-called "traditional Christian values" on all Americans by stripping women of their autonomy and power, and silencing anyone who refuses to conform. Bottom line: they want us all to shut up and stop being inconvenient.

Sounds boring. Instead, let's create a joyfully raucous, gloriously outlandish concerto of resistance. It starts with a single conversation—a simple arrangement of voices, like the opening notes of an orchestral masterpiece. Every voice, every instrument, every conversation builds the symphony of rebellion.

Are you ready to join the band? No experience required. Come as you are, and be ready to play!

In 2025, we're making noise. #FreeLuigi

Buen dia, mi gente, and welcometo La Vida Más Chévere de
Childfree Latinas, the onlySpanglish podcast for childfree
Latinas y Latines, helping usliberate ourselves from the
toxic cultural brainwashing weall grew up with, so that we can
design our best lives instead.
Bye.
I'm your host andresident childfree
Latina, Paulette Erato.

(00:24):
Happy New Year! Feliz Año Nuevo! How's the first full week
of 2025 been for you, hon?
Did you know that youcan actually text me and
answer that question?
For reals, there's a link inthe show notes to do just that.
And I'd really loveto hear from you.
Just make sure I know it is you.
Like, put your name in it.
Anyway! I usually lovethis time of year.

(00:46):
There's something magicalabout a collective fresh start.
I know a lot of people liketo poo poo resolutions and
all that, and I don't disagreewith it, because real change
requires a mindset shiftmore than a to do list.
You know, making resolutionsand seeing them through?
Most people fail at that, whichis why the second Friday in

(01:09):
January is called Quitter's Day.
Nice, right?
I used to do the Word of theYear, and that's what episode
53 is all about from last year.
If I had to pick a word for2025, with all the trepidation
and the gnarly feelingsand the fears I have about
this coming year and theincoming administration,

(01:29):
I'd still choose joy.
When I look back at themany ups and downs of this
last year from moving againand the expense of that and
losing friends and stillaccomplishing several landmark
milestones all on my own, Ichoose to focus on the joy.
As humans, we're biologicallywired to focus on the negative,

(01:52):
on the bad shit, and we havea lot of bad shit coming.
We'll get to that in a minute.
So choosing to insteadrevel in joy and focus
on the good shit, not thebad shit, that takes work.
You can rewire your brainto do it more easily,
even automatically, but that also is work.

(02:12):
I'm doing a vision boardworkshop for the Latinas In
Podcasting this weekend, andthat's not usually how I spend
my new year, but it turns outit's a pretty powerful tool.
I've learned a lotabout how repetition and
intentionality are necessaryfor reaching your goals.
This shouldn't be a surprisesince lifting weights
works the exact same way.
You have to repeatedly dothe same thing, the same lift

(02:36):
over and over and over, withincreasingly more reps and
or more weight, to improve.
And when you finally doget to that next level,
it's an amazing feeling.
Setting a new personalrecord, a PR, is a huge win.
It is a moment of joy.

(02:56):
That's what I'mchasing this year.
No, not chasing, letme rephrase that.
I am welcoming joy.
Notice how thisshifts the intention?
Instead of being somethingI have to capture, something
I have to work for, it'sinstead going to come to me.
I just have to makethe space for it.

(03:16):
And I believe that, despite thewild shit going on around us.
I actually did a wholeseries on how gym workouts
carry over into real lifefrom episodes 10 to 12.
And spoiler alert!I'm planning to do a deep
dive into that this year aswe progress through 2025.
So stay tuned.

(03:37):
Back to the new year.
A new year is a fresh start.
Something we're alldoing collectively.
We're all experiencing anew year at the same time.
And that's what I'musually so excited about.
The blank slate.
The possibilities.
Anything can happen!Great things could be
hovering over the horizon! But this year, this

(03:58):
year feels different.
For those of us in theUS, we've already seen the
storm clouds a-formin'.
I'm gonna be very blunt, likeyou'd expect anything else.
There are probably somebad things, truly scary
shit, in store for us.
Because they alreadyshowed us their playbook.

(04:20):
We're all well awareof Project 2025, yes?
If you haven't heard aboutProject 2025, please stop
here and do yourself a Google.
You can also listen to me talkabout it on episodes 69, 74,
and 76 for some background.
Don't worry, that listwill be in the show notes.
The bottom line is thatthere is little to no

(04:41):
governmental resistance nowto the draconian future the
framers of P25 envisioned.
And with Elon and Vivek runningfast and loose with governmental
oversight, who knows whatfresh hell is waiting for us?
What we do know is what They, the people in power, want.
They want to go backto traditional values

(05:03):
as defined by Them.
That's not a definition Isubscribe to, and probably
you don't subscribeto either, because no.
I don't agree with strippingaway the freedom we women and
gays and theys have foughtso damn hard for over the
last century and then some.
It's a dangerous momentfor us women and for all
marginalized communities, especially those of us who

(05:24):
aren't lily white Christian men.
And here is where I'mgoing to address the 39
percent of Latinas and the54 percent of Latinos who
voted for the Orange Payaso.
They don't think you'rewhite either, honey.
So, you're either a token whogot spent, or you're about to

(05:45):
be in for a very rude awakening.
A lot like those people thefirst time who didn't think
they'd be deported because theywere quote unquote, a good one.
No tienen vergüenza.
But you're gonna enter thefind out period soon enough.
You think you're safeand your proximity to
whiteness will save you?

(06:06):
LOL.
So what happens when all of thatcomes crashing down for you?
Real talk, I don't knowhow men are okay with this.
Sure, you want to be incharge of something, but
now you also have all theresponsibility of taking
care of everyone around you.
That's a lot to handle.

(06:26):
Why would you want to takethat burden on all by yourself?
That by itself isn't power.
Most of the men I knowenjoy having a partner, an
equal with whom they shareboth the responsibilities
and the privileges ofa relationship with.
Now, I know, all men aren'tmature and emotionally

(06:49):
intelligent, but even so, whywould you want to shoulder all
the duties, the obligations, and the burdens by yourself?
That's dumb.
And it doesn't haveto be like that.
All you have to do is treatyour partner like a person.
It's really simple.
Anyway, for the restof us, what is next?

(07:09):
Well, that's why youlisten to this show, La
Vida Más Chévere, right?
Which is all aboutdesigning your best life.
So how can we possibly designour best lives while also
trying to survive this nextyear or the next four years?
Here's something I'vebeen thinking about.
What They, the people in power, want is for women to just

(07:29):
shut the fuck up and get backin the kitchen or something.
They want to strip us ofour voices, of any iota
of power we may haveenjoyed up to this point.
And let's be honest, it'sbeen very, very limited,
especially for those of uswho are not white women.
They want us just makingbabies and making sandwiches

(07:49):
and not in any waycomplaining about any of that.
Well, okay, if that'swhat They want, if that's
what They're gonna plan todo, I have a suggestion.
The rest of us should takethis as an opportunity
to act as if we no longerhave anything left to lose.
Now, I don't mean burningdown your home and your safety

(08:12):
with it, and I'm definitelynot suggesting that we all go
out and start popping CEOs,though Luigi Mangione is
innocent until proven guilty.
No, I am not advocating thatwe sacrifice ourselves and
certainly not recklessly.
We have to be strategic.
What I am urging, as I alwayshave, is for us to continue

(08:36):
trying to dismantle thepatriarchy and act as if we
have nothing left to lose.
They want to takeit all from us.
So, if They did, whatwould we be left with?
What would we do?
How would we act?
How would we react?
How would we organize?
What would we do differently?

(08:58):
This, this is the mindshift I want us to consider.
The way we continue to designand live and thrive in our
best lives is simply existing, resisting, and deciding that
no matter what They, the peoplein power, want to enact, or do,
that we will not be silenced.

(09:20):
This show will continue as longas I can continue to put it out.
Until it is illegal for me,as a woman, as a Latina, as
a marginalized individual,to no longer be allowed to
exercise her free speech.
That's my plan.
What They fear the mostis this very thing.
Women organizing,resisting, and building

(09:41):
a better future togetherirrespective of whatever
power the patriarchy dolesout to white Christian men.
So that's exactlywhat we should do.
Your power, my power, it's inour ability to reach others,
whether that's through a podcastlike this or in a classroom if
you're a teacher, in a studio ora gallery if you're an artist,

(10:03):
or even having a conversationon the bus— or just on Threads.
Whatever your platform is, nowis the time to double down.
Every interaction, nomatter how small, creates
a ripple of change.
You know this.
To be completely honestwith you, there was a short

(10:25):
time there where I waslike, after the Latinas In
Podcasting Virtual Summit inOctober, I took a long break.
And for the last two months,I've been wondering, do I even
want to keep a podcasting?
Because quite frankly, I'd beokay walking away right now
and focusing on other thingslike building the Latinas
In Podcasting community andfinding funding for that.

(10:47):
That's a full timejob in and of itself.
You listening right nowcould help that by becoming
either a paid subscriber ofthis show or the Substack.
There's links for both ofthem in the show notes.
And we need that fundingbecause we need these voices
amplified and protected.
So I will continueto do that too.

(11:08):
And if you're going tobe in Chicago for PME
in April, let's chat.
But I also recognize thatthose of you who tune into
this show, who are listeningto me right now, you
deserve this, you need this.
You may not think so.
You may be like, Paulette, I'mjust here for the entertainment.
Haha! Alright, that's cool too.
Thank you for your downloads.
But I know that at leastone or two of you listen

(11:29):
because you want hope.
Because you want to hear thatthings aren't going to be as
terrible as we're all kindof catastrophizing in our
own heads that they might be.
And look, I'm not going to tellyou that it might not be bad.
It might be.
I told you it wasgoing to be blunt.
It might get reallyugly out there.
Already the leopards areeating their own faces.
It's not going to begreat for anybody.

(11:52):
But then I might also suggestyou go to Costco and fill up
on popcorn for the rest of thisterm, because, I don't know, we
might actually be entertainedby this bizarro circus.
It's a possibility.
But remember, despiteall of this, we still
have freedom of speech.
We still have freedomof expression.

(12:13):
They cannot takethat away from us.
Not without a lot of othercrap happening before
we get to that point.
Like literally burningthe Constitution to ashes.
If that happens,we'll have to regroup.
Maybe Nic Cage will come andsteal it before that happens.
I don't know.
In the meantime, I want tochallenge you to use your voice.

(12:35):
The speaker, Vinh Giang, calls it an instrument,
and I love that.
So your instrument, whetherthat's a literal one, like
a drum set, or a figurativeone, like your voice.
I want you to find yourinstrument, use your
instrument, and act as if youhave nothing left to lose.
If you haven't foundyour instrument yet,

(12:58):
start looking now.
Start today.
Write it, sing it, speakit, dance it, let it out.
This is what is meant bystanding in your power.
Then, and if you'vealready found your voice
slash instrument, you'rehere, use it louder.
They want us to disappearfrom the public discourse.
They want us to stop beinginconvenient to them.

(13:22):
They want us to shut up.
So the antidote tothat is very simple.
Not only do we not shut up, weplay our instruments louder.
You know how when an awardnominee is on stage, like
at the Oscars, when theiracceptance speech starts to
take a little too long and theorchestra starts playing louder

(13:43):
and louder to drown them out?
We are the orchestra! That's how I'll be operating.
And that is going to be thetheme of La Vida Más Chévere
de Childfree Latinas this year.
In the next episode, I'm doinga deeper dive into the mindset
shift and how you can do it too.
So once again, stay tuned.

(14:05):
Till then, as we gear upfor the inauguration, I
have some resources you cancheck out in the show notes.
One is Women Take the Day,which is an initiative to again
become an orchestra and drownout the circus by uplifting
and focusing on the voicesand actions of women that day.
Don't forget that theinauguration falls on January

(14:25):
20th, which is also MLK Day.
It's ironic, isn't it?
And not in the AlanisMorissette kind of way.
I mean, irony that we will becelebrating this civil rights
figure at the same time and onthe same day as we can watch
the collapse of our democracy.
We can laugh at the absurdity.
We can also cry.
Definitely have a cry.

(14:46):
Crying is a releaseand we all deserve one.
Tears, like rain, help wash things away.
They allow us to let go ofpain and fear and burdens we've
been carrying for far too long.
And what if, in spite of all thecrap that may go down this year,

(15:07):
we washed away some of this painand reconnected with our joy?
What if 2025 wasthe year of joy?
Remember, we have nothing leftto lose, so we may as well enjoy
what we have while we're here.

(15:28):
Mija, that's how we strive.
When we have nothing leftto lose, then we have
everything left to gain.
So we'll take up space.
We'll revel in joy andour little rebellious
orchestra will get loud.
You with me?
Good.
Now stay hydrated.

(15:49):
And that's a burrito.
