In this empowering episode of Ladies Kickin’ Ass, host Tanya Wilson shares her personal story of navigating male-dominated trades and service sectors, emphasizing the power of visibility and the profound impact of the phrase, "You can’t be what you can’t see." Tanya encourages women to show up authentically, embrace their vulnerabilities, and celebrate their achievements publicly. Whether you’re just starting out or are a seasoned professional, your story holds the power to inspire others, break barriers, and create a ripple effect for future generations. Tanya also challenges women to recognize their successes—whether it’s achieving a six-figure sales month or being named a Titan 100 CEO—and share them unabashedly. Speaker 1 (00:03):
Welcome to the Ladies Kickin', ass Podcast, where we
help you ignite your innerbadass and create the service
business of your dreams.
I'm your host, tanya Wilson, and together we'll dive into
inspiring stories and expertcoaching to set your journey on
fire.
Hey, badasses, welcome back tothe podcast today.

(00:34):
I have to tell you today'stopic has just kind of been the
universe speaking to me thismorning, and what I mean by that
is I have heard the same sayingtwo uniquely different times in
the last hour, and, and I waslike, oh my gosh, what an
incredible topic to talk abouton the podcast today.
And that topic is the sayingyou can't be what you can't see.

(00:59):
I think for many of us in ourlives, as we've journeyed into
or thought about getting intoentrepreneurship, we were like
do we have what it takes?
Can I do that?
Can I build that constructionbusiness?
Can I start an electricalcompany?
Can I manage all these guys?
Can they manage this team?

(01:21):
Do I know enough about financesin order to do this?
Is there another person I couldsee, follow, touch, talk to?
That has been or is at where Iwould like to go, and I will
tell you, as a woman in thetrades, this has been really
difficult to find, and this iswhy I want to talk about it

(01:43):
today is because I want tochallenge more of you to start
talking about your journey ofbuilding your business and being
involved in the trades and homeservice industry.
Why?
Because we need more rolemodels like I know you are.
Otherwise you wouldn't be hereon this podcast showing up and

(02:05):
talking about the authentic lifeyou live as a female
entrepreneur in this space.
I want you to write that sayingon a post-it note and put it
somewhere that will inspire youto take the step.
Even if it's coming on thispodcast, which open to anyone
who wants to come on, you can'tbe what you can't see.

(02:27):
So many people need to see anexample that it's possible.
I'm going to take my story, forinstance.
I never saw women in the tradesworking like owning a business
in this.
They may have been like thebookkeeper, the secretary or the
person taking the phone calls, but they definitely were not

(02:48):
owning and running teams.
They were not doing the tradework themselves, and what I
wanted to do is I wanted to bethat person.
I wanted to bring my feminineenergy into a very
male-dominated workforce andsoften it a little bit, give it
a little juice, bring in thatfamily love aspect.

(03:10):
I love to wrap love around myteam, around the people that
work for my business.
For me, I have nine people thatwork at my company right now.
Those nine families are part ofmy family, because I take it
very seriously that I'm not justemploying the person that works
at my business, but that I'malso helping provide for their

(03:35):
families.
If I don't show up and do myjob, they can't do theirs, and I
want to be that resource forthose people.
And I think that's what'sreally really cool about being a
woman in the trades is that youbring a different energy.
And so what I would love tochallenge everyone that is
listening to this today men, women, whatever if you are in

(03:58):
the trades or constructionindustry that you start showing
up more and talking about yourjourney.
Remember you can't be what youcan't see Many of our children
today.
We tell them you can beanything you want to be and, as

(04:22):
Ed Milet said in a conference Iwas at and he was speaking at,
he said you tell this to yourchildren all the time.
You can be whatever you want tobe, but are you?
Are you showing up and beingyour most authentic self.
Are you chasing your big dreams?
Are you trying to be anythingthat you want to be?

(04:43):
Because, if not, how do youexpect them to?
One of my biggest drivingmotivation factors is showing my
children what is possible, andit's not gender specific, just
to my daughter or to my son,it's for both of them.
I've been able to build awildly successful business,

(05:05):
starting out as a single momtrying to figure out how to do
this.
So if you find yourself in thatplace too, I've been there,
girl, and I will support you.
This is what this community isabout.
But where there's a will, there's a way, and if you need
someone to show up for you, youhave to reach out and ask for
help, and that's what we're allhere for.

(05:28):
Another beautiful reason ofshowing up is inspiring.
Even people that are older thanyou is actually possible.
I know that there's women thatI am connected with that are
much older than I am that arestill inspired by what I'm doing
today.
So when we think about howwe're showing up for people and

(05:48):
how we're showing people what ispossible, we're being that
person that they can see, realize that it's not always
just for the younger generation.
Many times, it's for the oldergeneration to say, wow, that's
really incredible and I'm reallyinspired by you, because
there's a lot of them that willreach out and say that to you.

(06:10):
Another thing to remember whenwe are showing up and we're
talking about our journey ofbecoming a entrepreneur in this
space, is that we're affectinggenerations that aren't even
here yet.
Think about all the things thathave happened for us in our
lives that we just take forgranted today as things that are

(06:32):
possible, that we can do, thatwe don't even know who made that
possible for us, but becausesomeone before us continued on
the action that that person tookto make that an option for us,
we get to enjoy that as like abyproduct of that.
I really, truly believe thatyou will never, ever understand

(06:54):
or comprehend the ripple effectthat you will make by showing up
and trying to be the bestperson that you can be.
It's endless, it's infinite,because you're going to impact
people in very different ways.
One thing when we were at ourultra event this last time I

(07:18):
have to find my note on here butone of them that was so big for
me that they that Brendan saidwas that if you're not chasing
your dreams.
Okay, you're not going afterwhat you want to do.
You don't know what it iscosting others by you choosing

(07:44):
not to live out your dreams, tochase your big goals.
Again, that quote was you don'tknow what it's costing others
by you choosing not to live outyour dreams and goals.
Wow, that one hit me in theheart and the head of like stop

(08:07):
being such a chicken shit, tanya, and start showing up and doing
what you said you wanted to do.
Many times we get defeated tooand we think, well, somebody's
already doing that.
No one will ever do it the wayyou will.
No one will say it in yourvoice, no one will be able to
connect with that person the waythat you do.
Someone right now, I promiseyou, is praying for you to show

(08:30):
up and chase those dreams, ispraying for you to show up and
make that opportunity for thempossible.
And when we look at life thatway, when we look at achieving
our goals or going after things, that bullshit imposter syndrome

(08:51):
or fear it kind of subsides, Ithink, especially for women we
will do things for other peoplebefore we ever do things for
ourselves.
And so when you can tie areason to why you are doing what
you're fearful of orintimidated by or feel like

(09:14):
you're not experienced enough todo.
You'll continue to keep showingup.
I was listening to a video thismorning on Instagram and Alex
Hermosi was talking about thetopic of fear and he said fear,
it's like a river that's a milewide and an inch deep.
It's scary as shit.

(09:38):
When you look at it, becauseit's a mile wide, you're like,
oh my god, I'm going to drown.
Then when you get in there, youmight get a little wet, but you
can still stand on your own twofeet.
That was a great analogy for me, because I'm going through some
things right now in my businessthat I am really fearful of,

(09:58):
something I've never done before.
I have a business that's biggerthan I've ever had before.
That could be very scary.
It can be a little bit messy, but I'm also working really hard
to skill up, to lead at anotherlevel and I think that's the
most important part and I'mhoping, by doing this and

(10:18):
talking about it and continuingwith these kinds of episodes on
the podcast, I am showing up andbeing that person that you need
to see.
Maybe you're in that samesituation, maybe you're in a
position where you want to havea massive impact on your

(10:39):
industry, but you don't reallyknow how to do it yet.
Sometimes it's just being braveenough to stand up and let our
voices be heard so that we canstart making that impact for
other people.
I think another reallyimportant thing that we have to
embrace with showing up andactually being that person that

(11:03):
people can see is that we got totalk about two separate things
and they're both really reallyimportant is that we got to talk
about two separate things, andthey're both really really
important.
One is being super vulnerablewith our failures, because
failure is an event, it's not aperson.
Okay, we've all failed at shit.

(11:27):
All of us.
Whether you want to admit it ornot, you failed at something,
and if you want to start abusiness, it's not if you fail,
it's when you fail, becausethere will be lots of failures.
You get really good at beingable to deal with failure and
many times we walk into afailure maybe it's even a new
kind of failure and we're likewe've never dealt with this.
But you've dealt with way worsethan what you're so scared of

(11:48):
right now and you came out onthe other side of that.
Dig deep.
You're so much fucking strongerthan you forever give yourself
credit for.
Go back and think about thestuff that you've been through
already.
Is it really that scary thatmaybe the bank account's a
little low this week?
You've put money back in itbefore Go back and do it again?

(12:10):
Is it really really scary rightnow that you've got to hire
somebody?
No, because you've hired peoplebefore.
If it's something new that youhaven't dealt with before,
that's what this community isfor, and if I can't help you,
girl, I will find somebody thatcan.
It's very important that weknow we have a community around

(12:33):
us to help us, which is why I'malways talking about making sure
that you are dialed into acommunity somewhere.
It's so, so important.
But on the flip side of failures, something I'd love to
challenge us ladies to do moreis talk about your wins.
Celebrate and make it public.

(12:55):
Don't have a little party athome with a bottle of wine and
your husband and you're likewe've had the best sales month
ever.
Fucking, post that stuff.
I want to see it.
And if people are intimidatedby what you are saying by
posting your wins, they are notyour people.

(13:15):
They're just not, and that'sokay, because not everybody's
going to be a fan and if theyare, I don't think you're trying
hard enough.
It's okay that people getintimidated by your success
Because those people aren'tgoing to be doing what you're
doing.
But you know what happens whenyou celebrate your success and

(13:36):
you show up online and you do alive or a podcast or you post a
video like this and you talkabout that best sales month
you've ever had.
Is you inspire other women tohave the best sales month
they've ever had?
You inspire other women tocontinue the best sales month
they've ever had?
You inspire other women tocontinue to keep chasing that?
I remember hitting my firstsix-figure month.

(13:57):
I talked to my coach, jeff, about it for I don't know he
could probably tell you becauseI was probably driving him crazy
, but I talked to him about itfor months.
All I want to do is get sixfigures in one month.
Six figures in one month, sixfigures in one month.
And when I hit six figures inone month, I remember
screenshotting it on myQuickBooks and sending him the
picture of it and we celebratedlike crazy.

(14:19):
You know what I didn't do?
I didn't tell anybody else.
I was worried about what peoplewould think.
I remember hitting that sixfigures in a month was more
impactful to me than everhitting this seven-figure sales

(14:41):
year.
Because what was really coolabout hitting that six-figure
sales month is my business hasnever dropped below that ever
again.
Kind of like the rules, likethe four-minute mile, like
nobody thought it was possibleand then they saw somebody do it
and then it got broke, likerecord after record after record
, like consecutively, like Ithink it only stood for a couple

(15:04):
of months before somebody brokeit again and it had been years
before that that anyone had everbroke it, been years before
that that anyone had ever brokeit.
And just like the six-figuremonth and the seven-figure year,
my business has never dippeddown before that.
Because now I'm at aperformance level that I know is
possible and dropping to belowthat is below standard.

(15:25):
Now you got to raise thosestandards.
You got to raise where you wantto be at and the only way that
you can raise those standardssometimes is thinking you need
to see somebody else that'sdoing that.
Sometimes as women we feel like, oh, if I want more than that's
being selfish, or I'm doingthis or I'm doing bullshit, it's
all bullshit.
If you want more, get more girl, get more.

(15:50):
You can have it.
You're worthy of it.
You don't have to earn someprestigious title before you can
say I want this.
You don't have to have acertain education, you don't
have to have a certain degree, you don't have to have so many

(16:10):
years somewhere Like, just goout and kick ass, you can get
whatever you want.
You're worthy, have to have acertain degree.
You don't have to have so manyyears somewhere, like, just go
out and kick ass.
You can get whatever you want.
You're worthy today to havewhatever the hell you're
dreaming of.
I'm so passionate about thisbecause I want to see more women
winning.
If you follow Ladies Kicking Assand you post stuff that you're

(16:31):
winning at, you can bet your assthat I will be reposting that
stuff on my story andcelebrating you.
I would challenge you all whenyou listen to this podcast, post
a win.
Jump on into a live real fast.
Send me a DM if you don't wantto post it yet.
You're not quite there yet.
Let's celebrate it together, but please try to find the
courage to post it online sosomebody can see it.

(16:53):
Talk about it.
It's so insanely cool.
This year, I got the pleasure ofbeing named a Titan 100 again
for the third year, which isabsolutely incredible.
This is a very amazingnetworking group of the top 100

(17:17):
C-suite level people.
So think CEOs, coos, cfos, cmosin the Phoenix metro area, okay
.
So think about this.
Holy hell, when I first gotnominated and got into this
three years ago, I rememberlooking through the book of all

(17:41):
of the people in here thinking Idon't belong here and, to be
real honest with you, I'vestruggled with that every single
year, like I don't belong here.
I mean, we have, like CEOs ofthe Arizona Diamondbacks.
We have CEOs of big, hugecompanies that have their names

(18:04):
on the buildings types ofcompanies.
Okay, huge leaders of massivenonprofits, like people that are
on billboards, are in thisgroup of people and, to be real
honest with you, I have nottapped into that network that is
available to me because I feltwhat can I bring to the table?

(18:27):
But this year, mm-mm, I'm notdoing that again this year.
This year I'm going to take fulladvantage of being named one of
the Phoenix Titan 100 CEOs.
Yes, I have a small business.
Yes, I have less than 15employees working for me, but

(18:48):
we're making a massive impact.
Employees working for me, butwe're making a massive impact.
I have a small podcast with anincredibly engaged small
audience and we're making animpact, and that's what it's
about.
Every year, you have to fillout a ton of questions in order
to continue to be potentiallyput in front of the judges to

(19:10):
see if you can make it again forthe next year.
I'm not throwing up wildly hugenumbers.
I have a seven-figure business,but it's not these people that
are making hundreds of millionsof dollars this year.
I'm not intimidated by that.
This year, I know that I bringa lot to the table because to be

(19:32):
in this group of people forthree years in a row I'm one of
10 out of those 100 that arereturning for the third year.
That's a hell of an honor, andit's not because of the massive
numbers that I'm throwing up.
It is because what I am doingand how I show up authentically

(19:52):
as myself and what I want to dofor women in this community and
through my other business, thatcontinues to earn me a place in
this community.
They believe I have value, orthey wouldn't have let me back
in or they wouldn't have let meback in.

(20:16):
When you find yourself in thisworld where you have just
up-leveled many times, it can bereally fucking scary.
Why do they want me to sit atthis table?
Why did they pick me?
What value do I bring?
I want you to stop thinkingthat way.
Please help me.
Please be my accountabilitybuddy in this.
We're not going to think thatway anymore.

(20:37):
We're sitting here for a reason.
What is it that we bring to thetable?
If you don't know what youbring to the table, I want you
to go into some self-explorationthis weekend and write that
shit down and post it somewherewhere you're going to see it all
the time.
What do you bring to the table?
Maybe it's crazy good energy.
Maybe it's a smile.

(20:57):
Maybe people feel warm aroundyou.
Maybe they love your story.
Maybe you came from shit andyou rose up like a phoenix and
now you're kicking ass.
There's so much power in thatstory.
Don't be afraid to tell it mess.
There's so much power in thatstory.
Don't be afraid to tell it.
It's so incredibly importantthat more women hear you.
They can't be what they can'tsee.

(21:22):
Some of you may be reallygung-ho and be like I didn't
need to see it to do it, andmaybe that's true, but there's a
hell of a lot of women outthere that do need to be able to
see it.
So if you can be it for them,do that.
Show up for them.
Again.

(21:43):
We're showing up for ourselvesnumber one and proving that
we're wildly fucking capable ofdoing amazing things.
Two, we're showing up for ourchildren and generations that
will come after us.
But they're just going to thinkit's easy because somebody did
this for them.
They may never even know it wasyou, but how really cool is

(22:05):
that?
You're getting a lot of respectfrom people that are older than
you that maybe didn't have theaudacity to step out and do it.
Maybe they didn't have enoughguts to do it and they're
looking at you and they're likego, girl, this is so awesome.
I have lots of women that tellme that and it's really cool to

(22:25):
be that for them.
Sometimes you're helping bringsomeone else's dreams come true.
It's a really, really cool wayof thinking about it.
And if those three things don'tget you, I want you to think
back to the quote that I said toyou earlier in this podcast you

(22:46):
don't know what it's costingothers by you choosing not to
chase your dreams.
So go out there, girl, thisweekend.
Do something.
Please.
Tag me in it, ladies kickingass and go out there and be
someone for others to see.
