So happy shopping Hey everyone.
Welcome back to another episode.
So today I wanted to talk to youguys about the importance of

(01:46):
taking time off.
And this is a very fittingepisode for where I'm at in my
life right now, because I amgetting ready to fly out from
Ohio to Arizona.
With my family for springtraining and I cannot wait.
I am so excited.
So, whether you work full-timepart-time, whether you're an
employer, you have your ownbusiness and entrepreneur, or

(02:08):
maybe you stay home regardless.
It is taking time off from work,or it is just simply allowing
yourself breaks I think a lot ofus often associate productivity
with working longer hours, butthe science behind this tells us
that taking regular breaks andtime off actually enhances our
productivity.

(02:29):
Our brains have limitedcognitive resources and just
continuous work without breakswill deplete those resources.
So taking time off allows ourbrains to replenish and restore
these resources, which can helpus with things.
Like being able to focus.
Being able to pay attention tothings and just having this
overall mental clarity.

(02:49):
And studies have also shown usthat taking breaks, brief breaks
during work.
Like taking a walk or justengaging in a different activity
can significantly improve ourproductivity and our performance
so a little tidbit about me is.
Typically during lunch break.
What I like to do is I'll eithertake a walk.
If I'm at home, I'll take a walkwith my dogs.

(03:10):
If I'm at work, then I'll justtake a walk through or around
the building.
And then what I also like to dois if it's too cold outside or,
I'm not up for a walk, then Ilike to watch the middle.
Or just a funny comedy.
Sit-com something like that.
And let me tell you, even thatsmall little break where I'm
switching gears and I'm focusingon something that isn't,

(03:32):
work-related.
When I come back to work afterlunch, I just feel more
refreshed.
So I definitely encourage you todo the same.
Don't be checking your emails.
Don't be doing anything.
Work-related havingconversations about work.
if it's not absolutely urgent, then please, please take that
time for yourself.
It's important for our brains tohave a little RNR so that rest

(03:53):
and relaxation, because ithelps.
With creativity and just thatinnovative thinking.
When we step away from work, ourminds are able to wander and it
just leads to periods where newideas can surface and certain
solutions can emerge also.
And because we're all aboutresearch today.
Research has shown that peoplewho regularly take breaks or

(04:19):
they take vacations, theyexperience a boost in their
creative thinking and theirability to problem solve, I am
going to bring up thisconversation, that me and my
sister-in-law were having theother day.
And I don't think she'll mind.
So she just opened a businesswith my brother in Geneva, Ohio,
and it's called Ben bargains.
And they have been busting theirbutts.

(04:39):
They are doing incredible workover there, but it is a lot of
work I mean, they are grindingday in and day out.
Just no break, honestly, whenI'm even on the phone with her,
she is working constantly, she'salways like, oh, I'm so sorry.
I'm checking this.
I'm checking that.
And I'm just along for the ridebecause I know how hard she's

(05:00):
working.
but anyways, I got sidetracked.
So we were talking about.
they just recently went on.
A vacation for my brother.
He turned 40 and they spent fouror five days.
On the beach and they felt likethat was just such an amazing
experience for them because ittook them outside of their
responsibilities with work.

(05:21):
Not completely because you nevertruly are when you're an
entrepreneur, but you know whatI mean?
So they were able to just stepaway and have that time and
space for themselves.
And they were coming up with newideas And I honestly, I'm not
someone who believes don't bringwork home with you or don't ever
talk about work.
I think that that can work forsome people, but for other
people, that's a big part oftheir lives and they find a lot

(05:43):
of fulfillment and joy out ofit.
So if that's you, then Iencourage you to have those
types of conversations, evenoutside of work.
I think it's great.
So for them.
When they got back, they werehitting the ground running.
They had new ideas.
There was another level ofenergy that they were coming
with because before they werekind of depleted, they were
just.

(06:03):
I think they were just exhaustedand tired.
So they had that time forthemselves where they could
relax.
And I saw the energy shift whenthey came back and they are just
planning for the next step.
They're so excited.
So that just shows you the powerof taking that break for
yourselves.
But continuous work withouttaking breaks can lead to this
decision fatigue, where we findthat our ability to make good

(06:28):
sound decisions starts todiminish over time.
And I can speak to this becauseit was around, it probably was
around COVID.
So 2020, or even 2021.
For my work, I have five weeksof PTO.
And that year, I only took twoweeks off total.
I learned real quick.

(06:49):
That that is a no-no for me.
I need to take my full fiveweeks or at least close to it
because two weeks just wasn'tenough.
Especially if you're in aposition where.
There's a lot of criticalthinking going on and you're
working with patients It canreally make a difference.
If you are taking that time foryourself to recharge your
battery and replenish yourmindset so that you can provide

(07:12):
the service that I know you'reworking so hard to provide to
other people.
When we're working for anextended period of time without
any breaks, it just leads tode-motivation honestly.
And I think a reduction in.
How satisfied you feel at yourjob?
And this extends further outside of work as well.

(07:33):
Because as a mom, I know when mykids were really little and they
depended on me so much more thanthey do now.
I would frequently feel likethat it would be weeks and weeks
before I would get any type ofrelief or break sometimes.
And that was between me and myhusband going to school, us,
both working and then having twolittle kids trying to take care

(07:53):
of them.
It was just a lot.
So.
Most of the time with childcareor anything like that when
you're having someone watch yourkids so that you can work or you
can study.
So it's hard to ask them again,Hey, do you think you can watch
them another time so that now Ican take a break?
It can be a lot, but it is stillso important to find that time
for yourself.
Whether, like I said, it's forwork and it's taking that time

(08:15):
off or even.
Having kids and being a parent.
Anything that you need just, youcan feel it when it's happening
that, Hey, I think I need abreak.
It's take the break, findwhatever you find a way to do it
basically is what I'm trying tosay, because it's really going
to help you show up in adifferent way.
In a way that you can feel morerefreshed.

(08:36):
So do what you gotta do.
So you can find that time.
I mean, we really want to try toprevent burnout here and we want
to show up to our jobs and forour families, we want to have
that work-life balance.
We want to have the balance, whether you're at work or you're
a stay-at-home parent or someonewho stays at home, you just want
to feel enthusiastic.

(08:56):
You want your energy levels tobe high?
You want to be creative?
You want to feel fulfilled.
You have to make sure thatyou're taking that break for
yourself.
And with that being said, I'mgoing to end this so that I can
go pack for my vacation.
And if you were in the north, you know how exciting this is

(09:16):
for me to be flying out so I canget some sunshine and some
warmth on my skin.
I can not wait to have this timewith my family and just to
recharge my battery.
So I hope you guys have abeautiful day and I'll see you
next week.

The Burden

The Burden

The Burden is a documentary series that takes listeners into the hidden places where justice is done (and undone). It dives deep into the lives of heroes and villains. And it focuses a spotlight on those who triumph even when the odds are against them. Season 5 - The Burden: Death & Deceit in Alliance On April Fools Day 1999, 26-year-old Yvonne Layne was found murdered in her Alliance, Ohio home. David Thorne, her ex-boyfriend and father of one of her children, was instantly a suspect. Another young man admitted to the murder, and David breathed a sigh of relief, until the confessed murderer fingered David; “He paid me to do it.” David was sentenced to life without parole. Two decades later, Pulitzer winner and podcast host, Maggie Freleng (Bone Valley Season 3: Graves County, Wrongful Conviction, Suave) launched a “live” investigation into David's conviction alongside Jason Baldwin (himself wrongfully convicted as a member of the West Memphis Three). Maggie had come to believe that the entire investigation of David was botched by the tiny local police department, or worse, covered up the real killer. Was Maggie correct? Was David’s claim of innocence credible? In Death and Deceit in Alliance, Maggie recounts the case that launched her career, and ultimately, “broke” her.” The results will shock the listener and reduce Maggie to tears and self-doubt. This is not your typical wrongful conviction story. In fact, it turns the genre on its head. It asks the question: What if our champions are foolish? Season 4 - The Burden: Get the Money and Run “Trying to murder my father, this was the thing that put me on the path.” That’s Joe Loya and that path was bank robbery. Bank, bank, bank, bank, bank. In season 4 of The Burden: Get the Money and Run, we hear from Joe who was once the most prolific bank robber in Southern California, and beyond. He used disguises, body doubles, proxies. He leaped over counters, grabbed the money and ran. Even as the FBI was closing in. It was a showdown between a daring bank robber, and a patient FBI agent. Joe was no ordinary bank robber. He was bright, articulate, charismatic, and driven by a dark rage that he summoned up at will. In seven episodes, Joe tells all: the what, the how… and the why. Including why he tried to murder his father. Season 3 - The Burden: Avenger Miriam Lewin is one of Argentina’s leading journalists today. At 19 years old, she was kidnapped off the streets of Buenos Aires for her political activism and thrown into a concentration camp. Thousands of her fellow inmates were executed, tossed alive from a cargo plane into the ocean. Miriam, along with a handful of others, will survive the camp. Then as a journalist, she will wage a decades long campaign to bring her tormentors to justice. Avenger is about one woman’s triumphant battle against unbelievable odds to survive torture, claim justice for the crimes done against her and others like her, and change the future of her country. Season 2 - The Burden: Empire on Blood Empire on Blood is set in the Bronx, NY, in the early 90s, when two young drug dealers ruled an intersection known as “The Corner on Blood.” The boss, Calvin Buari, lived large. He and a protege swore they would build an empire on blood. Then the relationship frayed and the protege accused Calvin of a double homicide which he claimed he didn’t do. But did he? Award-winning journalist Steve Fishman spent seven years to answer that question. This is the story of one man’s last chance to overturn his life sentence. He may prevail, but someone’s gotta pay. The Burden: Empire on Blood is the director’s cut of the true crime classic which reached #1 on the charts when it was first released half a dozen years ago. Season 1 - The Burden In the 1990s, Detective Louis N. Scarcella was legendary. In a city overrun by violent crime, he cracked the toughest cases and put away the worst criminals. “The Hulk” was his nickname. Then the story changed. Scarcella ran into a group of convicted murderers who all say they are innocent. They turned themselves into jailhouse-lawyers and in prison founded a lway firm. When they realized Scarcella helped put many of them away, they set their sights on taking him down. And with the help of a NY Times reporter they have a chance. For years, Scarcella insisted he did nothing wrong. But that’s all he’d say. Until we tracked Scarcella to a sauna in a Russian bathhouse, where he started to talk..and talk and talk. “The guilty have gone free,” he whispered. And then agreed to take us into the belly of the beast. Welcome to The Burden.
