New Zealand landscape photographer Erin Jacob reflects on her creative journey, from winning her first camera at age 11 to building an award-winning portfolio celebrated both nationally and internationally. Erin discusses how early missteps, like her first blurry star photo, only deepened her passion for learning and growth. A pivotal waterfall photography workshop in 2017 sparked a lasting shift in her work and mindset, leading her to explore the landscapes of Aotearoa with patience, humility, and a sense of wonder.
She shares memorable moments shaped by photography—sleeping under the stars, navigating the tides on remote beaches, and waking at 2am for the perfect light. Erin’s accolades include being named runner-up in the NZ Geo Photographer of the Year (Built Environment) in 2023 and earning the Electric Kiwi Mobile Award. In 2024, she was awarded NZIPP Amateur Photographer of the Year and earned recognition from Natural Landscape Photography Awards, International Color Awards, and One Eyeland.
In this episode, Erin also opens up about the business side of running workshops, the role of intuition and timing in capturing unique images, and her belief in slowing down to connect deeply with place. Her approach is a reminder that the best photos are often the result of persistence, presence, and passion—not just gear.
I hope you enjoy the show.
