In this maiden episode of "Laugh at the Odds Podcast with Heidi and Dave," we sit down with Kathryn Monaco Douglas of Widowed Not Alone, which started out 15 years ago as an in-person bereavement group for widows and widowers on Long Island, NY, and has since branched out nationally as a result of the pandemic and the necessity of going virtual. We also take a deep dive and discuss Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs, and how Widowhood and Secondary Losses strip us widows down to our most basic and primal needs.
Kathryn evolved from a grieving widow to a grief crusader and coach. Her goal is to provide support, encouragement, and guidance on the path to healing for the young widowed, near and far. She shares the challenges she faced as a young widow and the lessons she learned in her journey. Today, Kathryn has assembled a team to support her in her work facilitating bereavement groups locally and virtually. She also provides coaching to those who are unable to attend her bereavement group sessions, and she continues to help those suffering from loss, one widow and widower at a time.
