On April 4, 2022, Grand Rapids Police Officer Christopher Schurr, who happens to be white, made a traffic stop of Patrick Lyoya, who happens to be black. Lyoya was passively non-compliant from the start, and quickly escalated to violent resistance to the stop.
Ultimately, Schurr and Lyoya would be on the ground fighting for control of Schurr’s Taser, when Schurr finally pulled his service pistol and shot Lyoya in the back of the head.
Now, more than three years later, the since-fired Schurr is on trial charged with murder in the death of Lyoya, with opening statements beginning today.
