Speaker 1 (00:05):
Welcome to Leading People with me, gerry Marais.
This week, it's One SimpleThing, where in each episode, I
share a quick, actionable tip tohelp you bring out the best in
yourself and others the best inyourself and others.
One simple thing is created foryoung leaders, but hey, us

(00:34):
older folks can still learn athing or two.
Ask my dog he's learned a fewnew tricks recently.
Here's a question for youwhat's the one resource we all
have in equal measure, but cannever get more of?
Yes, you guessed it Time.
Yet so many of us act as ifit's unlimited.
How's about a perspective shift?

(00:56):
Treat your time like your mostvaluable asset.
Why?
Because it is.
You can always make more money, but you can't make more time
Once it's gone.
It's gone, gone, gone, gone.
This is especially true whenyou become a leader.

(01:18):
You discover that your time isno longer your own.
You've got people working foryou who want more and more of
your precious resource.
By the way, the other preciousresource you have as a leader
wait for it is influence.
Yes, but there'll be more abouthaving greater influence in a

(01:39):
future.
One Simple Thing episode.
So let's get to this week's tip.
For years, I struggled withovercommitting, saying yes to
everything and everyone.
Everyone, really yes, everyone.
What I realized the hard way isthis Every yes to something

(02:05):
unimportant is a no to somethingtruly meaningful, like your
health, your family or yourprofessional growth.
This is not to say that yourteam is not important Of course
they are.
However, you have an obligationas a leader to role model for
them how to use time effectively.
So here's one simple thing youcan try tonight.

(02:35):
Before you end your day, takefive minutes to plan your most
important task, or MIT, fortomorrow.
Write it down when you wake up.
Protect the first part of yourday to focus on that task
without distractions.
That means no distractions, noemails, unless they're part of

(02:59):
your MIT, and even then youdon't need to open your email
program to write an email.
And even then you don't need toopen your email program to
write an email.
No messages.
What no messages?
Yes, just you and your MIT,your most important task.
So you may be wondering why doesthis work?

(03:19):
Well, starting your day with awin sets the tone for success.
It gives you a sense ofaccomplishment, clarity and
momentum.
You'll feel great knowing thatyou've handled what truly
matters to you before the daystarts to pull you in a million
directions.
In fact, your MIT, your mostimportant task, gets you closer

(03:46):
to achieving your goals, or yourKPIs, or your OKRs, whatever.
Don't you just love a TLAThree-letter acronym.
So what are you waiting for?
Just go test it out.
Just go test it out.

(04:09):
Thanks for tuning in.
Remember, small steps can leadto big changes.
Test out this one simple thingand notice how it transforms
your day.
