Our close friends should build us up, not tear us down. They should help us, not harm us—whether emotionally, spiritually, physically, or ethically. We should choose our close friends on the basis of character and virtue, instead of simply on the basis of common interests, likability, agreeability, or natural chemistry. Our friends, particularly our closest friends, should inspire us to become better people, who contribute to our growth and development as moral and spiritual beings.
