Gunsmoke (1952 – 1961) was one of radio’s greatest adult Western dramas, bringing the American frontier to life with grit, realism, and unforgettable characters. Set in Dodge City, Kansas, during the late 1800s, the series followed U.S. Marshal Matt Dillon as he upheld law and order in a rough, often violent cattle town.
Unlike earlier “cowboy” shows, Gunsmoke was written for adults, blending authentic Western atmosphere with moral complexity. Stories often dealt with human weakness, hard justice, and the high price of survival on the frontier.
