Speaker 1 (00:00):
Well, hello everyone,
it's James Long.
Do me a favor and grab yourBible and a journal, and let's
turn to Psalm 23.
Today, psalm 23 offers aportrait of God's unchanging
care and provision, leading Hispeople into rest, restoration,
guidance, protection and joy.
This psalm invites us to findtrue contentment in Christ, the
(00:22):
Good Shepherd, whose presenceand promises bring peace in
every season of life.
Few passages in the scriptureshave brought as much comfort as
Psalm 23.
These familiar lines speak ofgreen pastures, still waters and
an overflowing cup.
But beneath the poetic beautylies a deep invitation to find
(00:43):
our soul's contentment in theunchanging character of the Lord
.
David himself, a shepherd, understood that true security is
found not in the absence oftrials, but in the faithful
presence of the shepherd, whomeets every need.
Here, contentment flows notfrom what we have, but from who
leads us.
The first section we'll belooking at is the shepherd, who
(01:05):
satisfies verses 1 through 4.
Rest in his provision.
The Lord is my shepherd.
I shall not want.
This is more than poeticcomfort.
It's the foundation ofemotional stability and peace.
Without the shepherd, we arerestless and vulnerable.
With him, we lack nothingessential.
We are restless and vulnerable.
With Him, we lack nothingessential.
Many struggle with anxiety ordiscontent because their sense
(01:28):
of security rests on changingcircumstances.
In Christ, we find that truesatisfaction is not the absence
of need but the presence of theOne who meets every need.
The green pastures and stillwaters speak of spiritual
nourishment and refreshment.
God's word and spirit quiet ourfears and ground our hearts.
(01:51):
Restoration for the weary herestores my soul.
Our lives sometimes mirror aweary and wandering sheep
drifting from God's path, burdened by guilt and
emotionally exhausted fromlife's pressures.
God's restoration is bothforgiveness for the heart and
renewal for the mind.
In counseling, this is thepoint where hope begins to rise
(02:13):
again, when someone realizesthat brokenness is not the end
of the story, because theshepherd specializes in bringing
back the straying and liftingup the downcast.
Guidance in the right path.
He leads me in paths ofrighteousness for his namesake.
Many emotional and relationalstruggles deepen when people
(02:33):
feel directionless or trapped incycles of poor choices.
God's guidance is never random.
It's always righteous andrestorative.
His word clarifies our stepsand His Spirit aligns our will
to His.
When we trust in His leading,we find not just the right path
but the safe one, because Hisreputation as a faithful
(02:56):
shepherd depends on it.
Courage in the Dark Valley.
Even though I walk through thevalley of the shadow of death, I
will fear no evil.
Valleys are inevitable seasonsof grief, uncertainty, strained
relationships or serious illness.
These can trigger fear, depression and a sense of
abandonment.
But contentment in the valleyis possible when fear is met by
(03:20):
the truth that you are with me.
God's rod protects us from harm.
His staff draws us closer whenwe are tempted to pull away.
Learning to anchor our emotionsto his presence rather than to
the instability of ourcircumstances becomes the
turning point in recovering andresilience.
(03:40):
The host who provides.
Psalm, chapter 23, verse 5.
David moves from the pasture tothe banquet hall.
You prepare a table before mein the presence of my enemies.
This is a provision in themidst of pressure, a picture of
peace in the middle of conflict.
God does not wait for thedanger to pass before he
sustains his people.
(04:00):
He feeds them right in thepresence of their threats.
For those facing workplacehostilities, strained family
dynamics or spiritual opposition, this truth speaks directly the
shepherd host is your refugeand his table is a place of
safety and abundance.
You anoint my head with oil.
My cup overflows.
(04:21):
The oil symbolizes welcome, honor and refreshment.
The overflowing cup points to alife filled with joy and grace.
For those battling burnout orrelational weariness, this is a
reminder that God's care is notbare minimal survival.
It's abundant, overflowingprovision that restores dignity,
(04:41):
joy and a sense of worth.
The Dwelling that Endures Psalm23, verse 6.
Surely goodness and mercy shallfollow me all the days of my
life.
God's steadfast love does notebb and flow with our
performance.
It pursues us relentlessly.
His mercy meets us in ourfailures.
(05:01):
His goodness sustains us inseasons of uncertainty.
For David, the greatesttreasure was the ongoing
fellowship in the house of theLord.
For believers, this points tothe unbreakable promise of
eternal life in the shepherd'spresence.
John chapter 14, verses 1through 3.
When we view life through thislens, even our present
(05:23):
challenges are framed by acertain future.
Contentment is not just aday-to-day experience.
It is rooted in the unshakablereality that our story ends in
the presence of our shepherdking.
Now here are some of thedoctrinal truths to remember.
Number one Christ is the goodshepherd who knows his sheep by
name and laid down his life forthem.
(05:44):
You could see that in John, chapter 10, verses 14 through 15
.
Second God's provision iscomplete, meeting every
spiritual and physical need.
You could see that inPhilippians, chapter 4, verse 19
.
Number three restoration isGod's work, bringing forgiveness
and renewal to the weary.
(06:04):
You can see that in Psalm 51,verse 12, and again in 1 John 1,
verse 9.
Number four God's presencedispels fears, even in the
darkest valleys.
You can see that in Isaiah 41,verse 10.
And then, finally, god'sgoodness and mercy are
(06:24):
relentless, securing our eternaldwelling with him.
You can see that in Romans, chapter 8, verses 38 and 39.
Now let's take all of thatdoctrine and let's make it
practical, practical theology, living out this psalm.
First, I want you to begin eachmorning declaring that the Lord
is my shepherd.
I shall not want, as aconscious act of trust.
(06:46):
Second, replace constant intakeof negative voices with a
steady meditation on God's wordto restore peace and stability.
Third, ask God to reveal areaswhere you need his restoration
and to give you courage toaccept it.
Number four invite his guidancein daily decisions, trusting
(07:09):
that his path leads to a life ofrighteousness.
And finally, look for tangibleways that God is preparing a
table for you in the midst ofyour challenges.
Let's now spend some timereflecting and responding.
Number one where are youseeking satisfaction apart from
Christ, and how has it shapedyour level of contentment?
(07:31):
2.
How has God restored you aftera season of emotional,
relational or spiritual fatigue?
3.
What does following God's pathof righteousness look like in
your present circumstances?
4.
How has God's presence changedyour experience of a difficult
(07:53):
season or relationship?
Number five where can you seeHis table prepared for you in
the middle of conflict orpressure?
Number six how does knowing Hisgoodness and mercy are pursuing
you affect your long-termoutlook?
And number seven what is onestep that you will take this
(08:17):
week to rest more fully in thecare of your shepherd?
Well, let us pray.
Father, thank you for thefaithful care that you give as
our shepherd.
Through your Son, the LordJesus Christ, you lead us to
rest, restore our souls, guideus in righteousness, protect us
in danger and fill our liveswith abundance by the power of
(08:39):
your Holy Spirit.
Teach us to find contentment inyou alone and trust your
goodness in every season untilwe dwell in your house forever.
In Jesus' name, we pray, amen.
Walking forward with theshepherd Psalm 23 reminds us
that contentment is not found ina trouble-free life, but in
walking closely with theshepherd, who provides, protects
(09:01):
and pursues us with steadfastlove, whether in green pastures
or dark valleys.
