Speaker 1 (00:00):
Welcome to Let it Be Easy with Susie Moore.
When was the last time you werebored?
You were just, maybe sitting onthe sofa looking at the ceiling
, maybe looking out the windowscratching around for your phone

(00:25):
.
I see you.
I saw this interview cliprecently.
Someone sent it to me and itwas around the case for boredom
and it was a professor who wastalking saying that it's really
a not just a shame or a pity,but it's a problem that we don't
allow our children to be boredand that as adults, we don't

(00:48):
experience boredom very often.
Now I get it right Like you'vegot a busy, full life.
I'm sure you work, you managefriends, you manage family, so
it's not like there are thesehuge pockets in the day where
there's nothing to do.
I understand that.
But even waiting for anelevator, pulling up at a red
light, even if you're walkingdown the street and you have to

(01:10):
pause for whatever reasonbecause there's traffic, what do
we do?
We whip out the phone, don't we?
We check our notifications.
We log into Instagram for asecond.
We open Candy Crush.
We check our email.
We log into our WhatsApp.

(01:32):
We check our podcast reviews.
Hee, hee, or is that just me?
We never.
I don't want to say never, butwe very rarely allow ourselves
to be bored.
We even take the phone into thebathroom with us, into the bath
, if we take one.
We are so connected andstimulated.
No wonder we can't sleep.
The case for boredom was simpleit's about being alone with your

(01:56):
thoughts.
Can you do that, or is it toouncomfortable?
I went to this bar recently tomeet a friend and there was the
football playing.
There was music playing.
It was just so loud and I waslike what's wrong with a quiet
place?
Why can't we just sit down andhave nothing blaring and just
have our conversation?

(02:17):
Are we so afraid of silence?
Are we so afraid of the pause, the gaps, the space between the
notes, which is what you need tocreate music?
By the way, when we allowourselves to be bored, we allow
ideas to emerge, creative ideas.

(02:40):
Often we find solutions toproblems.
I sometimes feel like my innervoice can reach me when I'm
bored, because I'm not zoned outor tuned into other things.
I can just really listen tomyself.
And I heard a statistic theother day that children in
America are more scheduled thaninmates in a maximum security

(03:04):
prison.
I don't know if that's true,but think about that.
Every hour is scheduled for aprison inmate and it seems like
every hour is scheduled forchildren, versus running out
into the garden and justallowing themselves to be bored
and invent games, because whenwe're bored, boredom
necessitates creation.
It is the birthplace of a wholelot of things, my friends.

(03:26):
So when was the last time youwere bored, when was the last
time you allowed the people inyour life to be bored, and can
you foster this as somethingthat's positive?
It's almost strange, isn't it?
If you go to a restaurant andmaybe someone's eating alone and
they don't have their phone, you're like who's that weird
person?
It's me.

(03:48):
I'll sit there, order my salad, order my wine and look around
eavesdrop, pay attention to thescents in the room, the other
conversations that are going on.
Really taste my food.
Be present with myself.
Really taste my food.

(04:12):
Be present with myself.
Boredom what can it be thebirthplace of for you right now?
Until tomorrow, my friends, somuch Love and ease.
Hey friend, are you feelingstuck in any area of your life
right now?
I've got you, with over adecade in coaching and a
thousand self-help books undermy belt.
