What does it take to persevere through the challenging journey of pursuing your dreams? Drawing inspiration from Stephen King's memoir on writing, I explore the profound impact of having just one person who truly believes in you.

King's powerful observation that "life isn't a support system for art—it's the other way around" resonates deeply with me. We understand our humanity through creative expression. This is why your voice—whether you're a writer, podcaster, or any type of creator—matters so significantly. The world needs your perspective to make sense of itself.

And, as a special bonus, I want to give you FREE access to my signature course, Slay Your Year (usually $997)! All you have to do is:

  • Leave a review of this podcast.
  • Email a screenshot of your review to info@susie-moore.com

Simple as that!

Speaker 1 (00:00):
Welcome to Let it Be Easy with Susie Moore.
Hello, my friend, I am reallyenjoying reading right now
Stephen King's book on writing,a Memoir of the Craft.

(00:21):
Now this book actually isn't inprint anymore.
I don't know why not.
Why would this not be in print, right?
Stephen King is one of thegreatest fiction writers of all
time.
He's hit records with his booksales and I absolutely love, so
far, what I've read about hislife.
I'm about a third of the waythrough.

(00:42):
But what he says about writingis that life isn't a support
system for art.
It's the other way around, andI've always agreed with that.
We understand life because ofart.
That's why, if you're apodcaster, if you're a writer,
if you're someone who sharesstories, we need you.

(01:04):
The world doesn't make sensewithout art.
It can't just all be about highrises and lawyers and attorneys
and numbers and science.
It's about feeling andunderstanding and human
connection.
And there was this one littlesnippet in the book that I was
actually just reading last nightand I thought oh, isn't this

(01:27):
true?
Isn't this true?
Now, whether or not you're acreative, whatever it is that
you want to do, to be, do orhave or achieve in your life, I
do know the magic and power of,if you're lucky, having someone
in your life who believes in you.
Now, nothing can replaceself-belief.

(01:48):
Self-belief is the foundationof everybody else's belief, the
universe's belief.
We don't need, so to speak, anybody else in order to fulfill
our vision right.
By staying true to ourselves,by putting one foot in front of
the other and taking inspiredaction, we will encounter many,

(02:09):
many, many people, but there ismagic in having a constant
source in your life, if you'relucky and if it's something that
you can nurture, having evenjust one steady person who
believes in you.
So Stephen speaks about writing, how he'd get paid a few hundred
dollars here or there, writingfor magazines when he was young

(02:31):
and getting started and, likemany people right, like many,
many or, dare I say, allsuccessful people, it's a rocky
road.
In the beginning.
There are no guarantees.
Often you're short of money.
Often you think do I need togive up on this?
Am I being realistic?
This dream?
It's just.
It's so hard.
This is what he says about hiswife in this book, because, of

(02:53):
course, he's getting a lot ofknockbacks, he's getting a lot
of rejection.
He says this if he didn't havehis wife her name's Tabby, I
think a lot of the heart wouldhave gone out of me.
Tabby never voiced a singledoubt, however.
Her support was a constant, oneof the few things I could take

(03:15):
as a given, and whenever I see anovel dedicated to a wife or a
husband, I think to myselfthere's someone who knows.
Writing is a lonely job.
Having someone who believes inyou makes a lot of difference.
They don't have to makespeeches, just believing is
usually enough.

(03:36):
Now you may be lucky enough tohave your support system in a
spouse.
Many people don't.
That's okay.
Maybe it's a sister or a parentor a co-worker or a friend.
This is what I recommend.
If you are open to advice onthis topic, this is what I will

(03:56):
say to you.
Maybe that person who believesin you isn't even super close to
you in your life.
Maybe it's a friend that youhave who you know just sees you.
They just sees what yourpotential is.
They see who you are.
Do what you can to spend moretime with those people.
You don't need an army, youdon't need a posse.

(04:17):
You don't need a whole group ofpeople cheering you on, even
just one person in your cornerwho sees you, who supports you,
who believes in theinevitability of your dreams,
that person can be an incredibleanchor.
And if you don't have one, ifyou feel like you don't have one

(04:39):
, I would suggest two things.
Number one look around and becertain.
Some people aren't always vocal, like Stephen King says.
Right, they don't make speeches, but they believe.
Maybe sometimes in our own lackof belief in ourselves and our
work.
We can't even see the belief ofothers.
So, first of all, I'd reallylook around and go this person.

(05:02):
They might not be speaking upall the time, but they're by my
side.
They want me to win.
And then, secondly, if youreally don't know, if you really
can't find that person, make ityour intention, join groups,
make new friends, get into thecircles of people who are doing
what you want to do, becausewhen other people are doing it,
want to do, because when otherpeople are doing it they can't

(05:24):
help, but also see what'spossible for you.
Until tomorrow, my friends, somuch love and ease.
Hey friend, I've got somethingreally cool for you.
