Speaker 1 (00:00):
Welcome to Let it Be Easy with Susie Moore.
Today I have a beautiful Aesopfable to read to you, and this
is one that's a bit morewell-known.
You've probably heard this orvariations of this in different

(00:22):
kind of conversations, sometimeseven in scriptures, in
different speeches.
In Instagram posts there areversions of this.
It's so interesting.
If you look at modern literature, so much is derived from old
literature, old stories,parables, fables, tales.
This one, my friends, is theCock and the Jewel.

(00:42):
You know it, it's nice andshort.
A cock, scratching for food forhimself and his hens found a
precious stone, on which he saidif your owner had found thee
and not I, he would have takenthee up and have set thee in my
first estate.
But I have found thee for nopurpose.

(01:03):
I would rather have one barleycorn than all the jewels in the
world.
Moral of the story what is ofgreat value or luxury to someone
may be of completeworthlessness to somebody else.

(01:25):
Right?
It's kind of like that Bibleexpression don't cast your
pearls before swine, right?
What's of great value to oneperson is worthless to somebody
else.
Practically speaking, though, Ialso feel as if this fable
speaks to the fact thatnecessity is more important than
luxury.

(01:46):
I mean, think about it.
Value is relative.
What's precious to one person,right?
Like a jewel, like to this cock, it's worth nothing.
He would rather one piece ofbarley corn.
Practical needs outweigh luxury.
A hungry person would ratherhave a sandwich over a diamond,
right?
Survival matters more thananything else in that moment,

(02:10):
necessity matters.
I also think about this in otherways, right?
I mean, imagine if you're atwork but you're burnt out.
Someone might want to give youa raise, but what you need is
some time off.
Right, yeah, more money is nice.
A jewel is nice, but it'suseless if you're exhausted.
But what you need is some timeoff.
Right, yeah, more money is nice.
A jewel is nice, but it'suseless if you're exhausted, if
you're fatigued.
What is it that you really need, right?

(02:33):
What is of great value to youright now?
Money might even be worthlessin a situation if you really
need a break.
I think about this too, evenjust practically speaking.
You know, plenty of people havelots of designer things, but
they have credit card debt,right?
That doesn't quite fit for me.
What is more important to you, true wealth, is having what you

(02:58):
need, what you care about, whatvalue.
What you value, not whatsparkles in the eyes of the
world or someone else deemsvaluable.
This can be applied to so manythings.
This is knowing what you value, knowing what you care about,
knowing what's important to you, because if you welcome other
things into your life, thatmight sparkle, they might be

(03:21):
impressive to somebody else, buthow useful or valuable or
joy-inducing is that for you?
What is your barley corn?
What is worth more to you thananything else in the world?
Why don't we just focus onthose things Until tomorrow?

(03:58):
My friends, so much love andease prompts that I'm giving to
you for free.
That'll help you coach yourselfto a better life in just six
days.
These are amazing.
If you feel stuck, if you everbattle self-doubt, if you feel
restless, if you find goalsetting challenging, these
prompts are gems in a sea ofgeneric advice.
