According to the story, the event in question took place on the afternoon of October 28, 1943. The USS Eldridge, a newly commissioned Cannon-class destroyer escort, was reportedly docked at the Philadelphia Naval Shipyard. Official Navy records confirm the Eldridge’s presence at or near Philadelphia during that autumn, as ships were routinely outfitted with advanced radar and degaussing equipment intended to protect them from German U-boats. The war in the Atlantic was at full tilt, and the Allies needed every technological advantage they could muster. What the public and most servicemen knew: engineers and scientists were refining electromagnetic field generators and related gear intended to render ships “invisible” to underwater mines. Declassified Navy documents reference degaussing as standard practice—a way to reduce a ship’s magnetic signature. Nothing in these records suggests that anyone was trying to achieve true optical invisibility or teleportation. Yet, in the annals of conspiracy lore, the official story only tells half the tale.
