becoming the founder and CEO ofK Mitchell Collections Growing
With Luxury.
So let's start off with thisquestion what inspired you to

(00:22):
start your own baby andchildren's brand?

Kimberly Mitchell-Waters (00:24):
let's start off with this question
what inspired you to start yourown baby and children's brand?
When both of my daughterssurprised me that they were both
expecting at the same time andmy grandsons was going five days
apart.

Chuck (00:34):
Wow, can you describe the journey of launching your own
brand?

Kimberly Mitchell-Waters (00:37):
The journey has been tough, but I
knew I wanted a legacy brand.
So when my grandsons was born,I just automatically knew I
wanted them to grow into alegacy brand.

Chuck (00:49):
That's right.

Kimberly Mitchell-Waters (00:49):
So that's how the inspiration
started, but the journey hasbeen.
It's been a blessing, but it'salso been hard.

Chuck (00:59):
Wow, wow.
You talk about legacy.
I like that.
It's not just about you, butit's about your children and
your grandchildren coming afteryou.
You want to leave themsomething.

Kimberly Mitchell-Waters (01:09):
Yes, I do, yes, I do that is, that is
one of my goals.

Chuck (01:12):
Yes, so let's talk about the name.
How did you come up with thename for your business?

Kimberly Mitchell-Waters (01:18):
The name came about because Mitchell
is my maiden name and with meleaving a legacy.
That is where the legacystarted, so I definitely wanted
to add Mitchell in it.
Growing with luxury, because Ifeel my brand is a luxury
accessible brand, so I feelluxury should not break the bank
, right.
So all children deserve luxurywhen they first come into the

(01:39):
world.
So that's exactly how I putthose two together Wow.

Chuck (01:42):
You talk about the name Mitchell, so did you have any
family members in the past thatwere entrepreneurs, that had
their own business, or are youthe first one?

Kimberly Mitchell-Waters (01:52):
No, my great uncles were entrepreneurs
, but my immediate family no,everybody in my immediate family
is more corporate, but my greatuncles, all of them, were
entrepreneurs.
All of them had businesses.

Chuck (02:05):
Wow, so they started their own.
Yes, wow, so it was in theblood.

Kimberly Mitchell-Waters (02:09):
Yes, it is.

Chuck (02:11):
Wow.
So what are some of the biggestchallenges?
You talked about challenges.
What are some of the biggestchallenges you faced when you
started out with K MitchellCollections?

Kimberly Mitchell-Waters (02:21):
Just, I had to learn how to be an
entrepreneur.
Um, I had to learn the industry.
Things have changed since 30years ago, since I gave birth,
so I wanted to.
Um, I wanted my brand to bestrong, so I took the time to do
the research, found out whatthe industry standards were and
you know, I just had to dig indeep.
I didn't want a trendy brand, Iwant a legacy.

Chuck (02:42):
So I want it done correctly.

Kimberly Mitchell-Waters (02:44):
So moving slowly is fine with me,
as long as it's done correctly, wow.

Chuck (02:48):
I like what you said.
You did the research, yes, andso some people think that you
could just have an idea and youcould just start something, but
you have to do the researchfirst, yeah, find out what
you're getting into.
Yes, you do.
Wow, Wow.
You talk about doing theresearch to make sure it's a
legacy brand.
So, with social media being abig part of how we market our

(03:12):
product today, how do you marketyour brand and reach your
target audience?

Kimberly Mitchell-Waters (03:16):
Well, I'm on all platforms but, at the
end of the day, social media isso boggled.
It's so it's, it's a lot, but umwith me, with me starting out,
um just learning the targetaudience.
You know I want my targetaudience, of course, um first
time moms, parents, um parents, expecting moms, grandmothers, Um

(03:37):
, a lot of people look at mypage and think my grandchildren
are my, are my children, butthey're my grandchildren.
So you know, I want to build acommunity of grandmothers.
That's fabulous.
And, of course, expectantmothers and seasoned mothers as
well, wow.

Chuck (03:52):
So is it like just in the country, or do you go out of
the country?

Kimberly Mitchell-Waters (03:57):
Yes, I will ship internationally.
Yes, Amazing.

Chuck (04:01):
Yes, wow, I love that.
So what has been the mostrewarding part of running your
own business since you started, you know?

Kimberly Mitchell-Waters (04:11):
I can say the most rewarding part is
seeing my baby grow.
Came into collections.
Going with luxury is my baby.
So seeing from where I firststarted, from where I am now,
that is so rewarding.
Even with the pitfalls, evenwith all the controversy that
comes with entrepreneurship, that is the most rewarding for
me, you know staying consistentand just continue to see her

(04:33):
grow into a multi-million dollarbrand which she will be.

Chuck (04:37):
I love it.
So what does a day look likewhen your feet hit the floor?
What does a work day look likefor you?

Kimberly Mitchell-Waters (04:46):
The first thing I do is give thanks.
Wow, I open my eyes and I givethanks.
I pray, I meditate.
I'm going to pray over mybusiness.
That's exactly what I'm goingto do.
After that, I'm going to checkmy emails.
I'm just going to start my day.
I'm going to let it flow.
I check my inventory.
Going to start my day, I'mgoing to let it flow.

(05:06):
I you know, I check myinventory, I answer all my
emails and I just continue to goif I have any meetings.
But you know packaging ordersit's a lot.
But you know, the first thing Ido when I wake up is I thank
God for even having me here.

Chuck (05:18):
Amazing.
I love it.
I love it.
So many people have babyclothing brands out here.
What makes you so unique amongso many others?

Kimberly Mitchell-Water (05:31):
K-Metri Collections Growing With Luxury
.
It's a perseverance brand.
If you look at me, you will beable to do anything.
You will be able to do anything.
Just like I said, we're intouniqueness and with K-Metri
Collections Growing With Luxury,I'm blending luxury with
accessibility, so that's whatmakes my brand different.

Chuck (05:51):
Wow, looking at your office, I can see excellence.
You're about excellence.
Yes, I am Making sure thingsare right, not trying to be
perfect, but you're.
You know you want to make surewhat you're selling is excellent
and I see that, yes, in KayMitchell Collections.

Kimberly Mitchell-Waters (06:06):
Yes.

Chuck (06:06):
Thank you, thank you, I love it.
I love it.
So, with having challenges, what have been some of the
setbacks that you've had and howdid you overcome them?

Kimberly Mitchell-Waters (06:19):
A couple of setbacks.
When I first started I was, acease and desist letter came.
It came in formal in my DMs,which was kind of surprising
because I'm like, I'm a newbrand, but that was that.
It kind of discouraged me.

(06:40):
But then, on the other hand, itmade me say, ok, I may be small
, but I'm a, I'm powerful.
So you know, that was.
It was a lot, but it let meknow, like Kim, ok, it's time
for you to step your game up.
It's people that's looking atyou.
Even though they might don'tlike you know, like or share

(07:01):
anything, it's people that'slooking at you.
So when they look at me, yes, Iwant them to see excellence.
I definitely do so.
That was one of my firstobstacles that I definitely had
to get over, with me just beinga startup brand.
But I came through because Godhad me and at the end of the day
, it made me stronger.

Chuck (07:21):
Amazing, amazing.
So you learned from what youwent through.
It made you better.

Kimberly Mitchell-Waters (07:26):
Yes, Amazing, and that made me start
my trademark process.
Wow, wow.

Chuck (07:33):
That's good to know.
So can you talk a little bitabout when you talk about
trademark, because you neverknow who's listening, who wants
to start their own business.
So when you talk abouttrademark, how important is that
?

Kimberly Mitchell- (07:44):
Trademarking your business, your brand, is
very important because you cango and get you know a name, an
LLC.
But if you want to build, youhave to make sure it's not
nationally, and that's what Iwanted.
So you have to.
It's going to cost money, butit's going to cost you even more

(08:04):
.
If you put all your money inyour branding and someone sends
you a letter stating that thisis my name and I had it first by
law, you could literally loseeverything and you could
literally have to start all overagain.
So that was one of the mainthings.
I did not know anything about itin the beginning, but when the
obstacles started coming, I hadsomeone try to take possession

(08:29):
of packaging.
I had to learn how to getcopywriting for my packaging.
So I had to learn how toprotect myselfwriting for my
packaging.
So I had to learn how toprotect myself.
So I went and hired an attorneyand, like I said, it's not
cheap.
You have to pay for thetrademark and then you have to
pay for the classes.
A lot of people don'tunderstand the classes that go
under the trademark.
So I just wanted to make sure.

(08:51):
Like I said, I'm building alegacy.
So my brand, I want my brandhere, even after I'm gone
generations afterwards.
So I don't want anyone to beable to come take anything from
my family that I have builtabsolutely on my back,
absolutely.
So that's why you know it'sgoing get trademark going.
Go and find someone that'sgonna trademark your brand.

Chuck (09:10):
Wow, it's good information about that, because
sometimes in a business Ibelieve listening to you, that
sometimes you have to use yourown money first.

Kimberly Mitchell-Waters (09:19):
Yes.

Chuck (09:19):
That that the return doesn't come automatically.
Yes, yeah.

Kimberly Mitchell-Waters (09:23):
Yes, people think that when you start
a business you're going toautomatically get money.
You know money is going toautomatically flow and that's
not true and I can't say thatfor all businesses, because some
businesses they want to makefast money and it's nothing
wrong with that, but my money isgoing to come slowly because I
want my.
My brand is a legacy, so I wantit done correctly.

(09:47):
When you see K-Metricollections growing with luxury
somewhere, you're going to knowit's a brand that you can trust.
Wow, and you're getting whatyou're paying for.
Wow, wow.

Chuck (09:56):
So what would you tell a young woman who's inspiring to
start something new, just likeyou have?
What would you what?
What encouraging words wouldyou give them while they're
starting out?

Kimberly Mitchell-Waters (10:07):
Um, pray about it.
Pray about it and don't letanyone tell you it's not
possible.
Wow, um, you have a lot ofpeople that you know that might
look at you and say what is shedoing?
Oh, she's not going to be ableto persevere through it.
You have to let the naysayersgo.
Entrepreneurship is not aboutwhat people say.

(10:29):
You have to be out of your mindto start a business, but you
know it can be done, becauseyou're gonna have good days,
you're gonna have bad days, andall of those bad days you have
to keep moving.
You have to keep moving.
Do not stop, and I have hadplenty of bad days, but I
wouldn't give it up for nothingin the world.

(10:50):
I wouldn't trade it.

Chuck (10:51):
So what encouraged you to keep going?

Kimberly Mitchell-Waters (10:53):
My children, my grandchildren, my
husband.
It's plenty, I'm done, butthey're like you have came too
far.
I don't even want to hear thatin your vocabulary.
So now I'm really testingmyself to say, kim, stop saying
you can't.
It's hard.
So I don't even try to put thatin my vocabulary anymore.

(11:16):
It's, I can do it.
I can do it and I'm going toget it done because Kate
Mitchell Collection is goingwith Luxury.
It will be a multimilliondollar brand.

Chuck (11:23):
Wow.
So A mental collection is goingwith luxury will be a
multimillion dollar, wow.
So listen that you sayexcellence um legacy, and I
believe that the one that youcan, that you just really talked
about was having the rightpeople around you in your corner
to encourage you.

Kimberly Mitchell-Waters (11:36):
Yes, when you definitely need a
circle you definitely need atight circle, you definitely
need a brand circle.
I always say that um, you cantell when people ask you
questions who you're speaking to.
You can see if you're speakingto someone that really doesn't
know anything about business.
When you're speaking to someone, you know if they know about

(11:57):
business, because I get askedquestions all the time how is
your business doing?
I know you're making money andthen I have other people say,
kim, you are doing good, keepgoing, keep doing.
I know you're making money andthen I have other people say,
kim, you are doing good, keepgoing.
Right, keep going.
I know it's hard, but keep going.
So they are the people that Ilisten to, because I don't
listen to people that have notwalked in my shoes.

Chuck (12:15):
I like that.
Yes, I like that.
So do you have mentors thathelp you, or do you, you know,
learn on your own?

Kimberly Mitchell-Waters (12:22):
Both.
Okay, I do have a couple ofmentors, and I have had a couple
of mentors, believe it or not.
One.
Most of them were men in thebeginning, but eventually I
think God is going to send methe proper mentor that I need.
But as far as me, I'm ago-getter anyway.
Right, so I'm going to get itdone, right.
You know, even nothing is amistake, right?

(12:44):
All everything I done made amistake.
God has always made it bigger.
Wow, it was a lesson, so I knownot to do it.
Some of them was costly, but Imade it, wow, wow.

Chuck (12:57):
So what do you see your brand in the next two years?

Kimberly Mitchell-Waters (13:02):
Um, I see K-Metriions growing with
luxury and major retail stores.
I see us being a multi-milliondollar brand.
I see us giving back to thecommunity.
Community is a very big part ofmy plan for my legacy.
K-metri Collections will be.
It's going to be huge.
I feel I have a lot to giveback.

Chuck (13:22):
Wow, wow.
So you see yourself expanding,expanding.

Kimberly Mitchell-Waters (13:25):
Yeah, expanding beneath, beyond what I
believe Great vision.

Chuck (13:30):
Yes, I love it.
I love it.
Yes, I love it.
Do you have any new productscoming out?

Kimberly Mitchell-Waters (13:35):
Yes, yes, I do, yes, I do.
My brand is going intoeco-friendly, so I definitely
have a lot.
I definitely have collectionscoming.
