It is an interesting time. We're coming
off season four episode 10 TheRise 51st All Valley karate
tournament championship.
triumphant. We have newchampions who's our champions,

Eli and Tory.
Man, unfortunately. GrandChampion Dojo Cobra Kai. Still
the No, still the baddest namefor a dojo.

You love doing, Darrell? Well, I was gonna wait
to do this. But it feels likethe time was right. And I talked
about it in the last episode.
And I did a lot of research inthat all Valley going back and
spot checking in the movie andgetting everything together. And
I thought this is interesting.
And today, we're going to breakdown one amazing championship

and that is all Valley karatechampion, Daniel Russo. 1984.
This is basically his road to achampion. How he became the
Karate Kid had he lost. Youmight not be the Karate Kid.
He's just the guy that stood upfor himself and he's just not
good enough. But no, he doeswhen he was triumphant. And so I
was going back through itthinking man, all Valley has

changed. I mean, this is allvalley from the 80s and we're in
a whole new era. But it wasinteresting to see a how many
times he fought to win the titleHow many Cobra Kai's he bested
and then you know there's somelittle things that I was still
discovering I thought oh mygosh, let's just do an episode
let's just do this and then Iget in the weeds I'm like hours

into research going on. No. Whatam I done? There's so much in

Oh, yeah. And I really admire and respect
tournament style fighting. Ithink you're saying me i Of

most fight fans know this. Butyou know one thing fighters do
is they study their opponentsbeforehand, right watching tape

Rihel seeing them in personfighting there's no tape on the
roof so well that's a wholenother story but in a tournament
style. You can't watch tape oneverybody and study everybody
because you don't know whoyou're gonna fight now, which
makes it that much moredangerous.

Yeah, Mr. Miyagi, could have seen tape of I can
see William Zabka JohnnyLawrence from his previous wins.

every fight that's going on.

while because some of thecamerawork is so close and
tight. You can't tell what'sgoing on. It's like watching
transformers to like, what'sgoing on? You're desensitized to
it. Yeah. But it's incrediblydone. I have a whole new found

respect, because I haven't seenthis movie in a while when I say
that's not true. I haven'tstudied the all valley from the
Karate Kid in a while. Yeah. Andso if you go back, and you
should do this, too, at somepoint, watch it again. You see,
like, yeah, they're reallytaking hits. They're really
going after it. I don't thinkthere's a lot of stunt people
and a lot of these scenes that Iwas watching. So yeah,

it's not one of those things where you can put
skeleton masks over stunt peopleand have right now that's a
whole other day. Yeah, this wasthe pre digital era. So yeah, I
think that a lot of the stuntsthemselves do have to befall
upon the actual actors. Yeah,back in this era, for sure.

So here we go sound Daniel Russo, played by
Ralph maggio, his path tobecoming the Karate Kid and
becoming the all Valley creditchampion of 1984

minutes and just to be specific, this is not his
path to becoming the credit cutfrom the time he leaves jersey.

he was a credit card without anall Valley but you know maybe
because Miyagi trained him andhe knows a lot of stuff and he's
a prodigy as you always say somaybe he could be done the
Karate Kid but I think allValley just kinda elevated him

they get ready to square up Saluntil our favorite referee

Love this guy comes in breaks it up. Yeah, no,
Mr. Miyagi. He's not around herally. What is Dutch say here and
the same.

Dutch says, Make a move. Make a move. He also
says points are no points.
You're dead meat.

Man. He's ready to go. Yeah, he was possessing
this. And it was like, make amove. Make a move? Yeah, I
wanted him to touch him. He wasso angry. Yeah, he didn't lose
his girlfriend to Daniel. Idon't know.

It's almost like a roid rage. I think like Dutch
was meant to represent roidrage. Yeah.

So that we leave that incident didn't happen. No
fight. No harm, no foul. Andthen Ali shares the scoring
system with Daniel. And so thislittle tidbits along the way. So
Daniel still he's putting on hisstolen Black Belt. How does Ali
break this to him? Because sheknows she's been to valley she
was dating Johnny right? She'sprobably been to a few all

valleys.

Interesting. She might have been in that very
locker room. Right? Ali says,Daniel, look, everything above
your waist is the point. You canhit the head. You can hit the
sternum, the kidneys and theribs. Got it. I love it that his

Yeah, he has no idea and Mr. Miyagi probably
doesn't know either. So thankgoodness, Ali's there. So right
there. So and we knew this headslegal. So all this other talk. I
know there's this weird stuffwith the Crane Kick being
illegal or not? You and I bothknow it is there's other
headshots in this tournament.
And Ali laid it out right thenand there.

So yeah. It just became sort of a funny internet
trope that the kids might havebeen illegal.

Well, after I heard that, Ialmost commented on that. So as
she finishes that, he's got it.
We hear the Cobra Kai chant. Sohow does that go,

Cobra Kai, Cobra, Kai Cobra.

And they come by and they pushed Daniel. I
couldn't tell who it was. Sothese guys are promoted ally
like barks at them. So yeah,it's on it's game time. There's
like 20 of them. One of him oneof me Aikido students and
they're picking on him. So nowhere we are match one. All
right, miscellaneous dojo, Idon't know it. There's no name.

There's just a white guy with ared circle logo on the back and
the student is fighter has ablack belt. And when we see him,
he's facing away. He's on hisknees kneeling down facing away
from Daniel. We see this later.
So remember that. And thereferee helps Daniel tie the
short red ribbon belt around hisblack belt, thus making him the
red flag. And he has it on thewhole tournament. So Daniel is

designated always as the redflag.

Wait, what does interesting flag mean? Exactly.

There's a red and there's a white flag is the
referees dew points. And Danielis just he's always going to
have a red flag because he hasthe red ribbon on him. And I
noticed that the opposingfighter didn't have the white so
it's just a given I guess ifsomeone's wearing the red the
other ones automatically thewhite. They never talked about
this. Pat Johnson is tying it onhim for him. Yeah, so I've

always seen it, but I reallydidn't focus on it until I did
this deep dive

my meaning for I always thought that that meant
the red thing hanging on thebelt means you are a fighter in
the tournament. You arecurrently a fighter but you

know. You're on touchable. Noheadshots on this guy with a red
ribbon. Yeah, look. So thenthere's three refs, Patty
Johnson being the main ref tohead ref. There's two males
including him one female becauseyou had recently asked about

I don't think the karate kid gets any credit or
cool. Let's try to not string soahead of their time by having a
female ref. I'm telling youagain. There was only a female
ref for a short time in the UFCa few years ago and she's gone.
I have not seen a female ref inthe UFC, which to me looks a
little weird when you have a manroughing women and then the
judges are men and then thecommentators are man. It's like

broke up the fight in the lockerroom says what? And he says this
a lot throughout the day.

Face me, face, bow on guard, fight hate,

and it's on the opponent attacks with a
sidekick. And he hits Daniel'sarm right away the first freakin
thing and Daniel's kind ofholding his arm, he goes flying
out of the ring point. Now,sounds very similar to what
happened with Sam and Tory, andall Valley. Remember when Tory
got ruled out of bounds, but Samhad her inbounds. This was the

exact same thing. And we alsoknow that was a point and we
know why it wasn't a pointbecause someone paid off the
ref.

To to look the other way. We can say that it's
not a spoiler, right?

It's not a spoiler. Unless you haven't seen
episode 10. So then stop thispodcast now and go do so. And so
that is a point. So Danielsfirst thing boom point. And the
opponent then charges andpunches Daniel out of the ring,
because after he's got hurt, thenext thing is he punches and
Daniel retreats out of the ring,just completely on his own. And

then he's trying to get his witsabout him. I mean, he was just
thrust into the cell. He doesn'tknow much about this type of
fighting. And then Mr. Miyagicomes over with some words of
wisdom as he always does.

Listen. Remember, your defense? Points will come.
concentrate, focus, power,remember balance, make good
fight.

Awesome words.
And Sal, that sounds veryfamiliar. From season four,
Episode 10. As Daniel talks toEli,

this fight is not about him. The biggest battle is
always the one within. Okay,concentrate, defense, focus,
power, you find your balance,and those points will come.

So it's a different version, but they
worked it and that's straightout of the Karate Kid.

So now we're back to the fight.
And Daniel gets a warning forthat leaving the mat leaving the
ring on his own. He just backedaway. And the ref comes over and
says what?

That's a warning for running out of the ring.
Once more, it costs you a point.

So there we've introduced point deductions,
which comes into play in theKarate Kid part three.
Absolutely. Yeah. With PattyJohnson in charge of that fight
as well. And the credit cut partthree. So Daniel does the same
thing. So speaking of which, Ishould point this out and not to
go too far in the weeds but inthe Karate Kid three when the

match first begins. He doesleave the ring Barnes comes out
in real crazy and he does notissue a warning. So it's like
maybe it's this his first matchin this movie ever. And he's
issued one but in the futuremaybe because he's a champ.

He gets a gimme.

So the opponent comes in. Punching charging,
Daniel moves left doesn'troundhouse to the stomach.
Point. One One. Great encountersthese Miyagi dough students, one
of one who knows how to move, heknows how to go on the defense.
He doesn't know about thisattacking business but and then
the ref says,

on your lines.

Yeah,

I call it a roundhouse. Patty Johnson calls
it a round kick. But there wego. One One. And then the female
raffle, which I noticed this isfunny is now sitting down. This
is a movie. So there's lots ofangles, lots of shots. That's a
reset. The female ref who'ssupposed to be one of the you
know, flagbearers. And part ofthis thing she's sitting down,
obviously, I totally spottedfrom break, and we only see

she's on break. And we're stillon the same match. We've only
gotten like a minute. And weonly see Johnson is the only
wrap because a lot of times youonly see one in frame. But I
love that she's sitting down ona break. And then I also noticed
because they're kind of panningthe crowd. We see Freddie's
friends from the beach. Andthat's 140 Fernandez, he's not
there yet. He's, he's pullingthe LA you know, come late,

leave early. Yeah. And I spottedwhere Freddie would be sitting.
There's another guy, an olderguy. And he's not older, but all
of them is teenagers. And he hasa camera and he's taking photos.
And another extra is takingphotos, just a few people over.
So are these real photos? Theseis prop cameras, because I'd
love to see the images capturedthat day.

If they had any forethought, they would have
given them real cameras and filmbut

they're just making this movie called The
Karate Kid that might have beentheir own cameras.

Oh, you were people in the crowd there.

Well, like hey, you have a camera. It could be a
prop but it also could have justbeen Hey, if you got one come
out, make it look lively. Thinkabout that. Think about having

partially out of frame. Thishappens a lot. You really can't
tell what happens. But heappears to be doing some sort of
spin. And Daniel chops his backpoint to one. And then we assume
Daniel wins because we're offthat's it. That's all you get.

move on because after he scoresthat one, the famous song and
montage kickoff, after whathappens?

incredible. And he faces a lotof them. And this is Jerry. He's
a brown belt. Everybody else isa black belt, including Daniel.
So this is the only brown beltI'm assuming brown belts can

find black belts. I've seen thatat tournaments when I was
younger. But for the most partthey usually wouldn't. And Jerry

O'Dell. And we know him fromother shows, or at least a
really popular show in the 80s.

I forgot if I saw Karate Kidfirst. Then I saw Tony O'Dell in
head of the class but I mighthave seen because I used to
watch head of the class.

I loved head of the class and he was like the
real studious, nerdy, preppykid. I didn't recognize him from
the Karate Kid. I saw the KarateKid first and then head of the
class but I never put ittogether until years later
because he doesn't have thatprominent of a role and the
Karate Kid. But anyway,

yeah, no, but he does come back later and Cobra
he does

he is definitely in Cobra Kai of all the ones you
know, besides the two bigplayers Tommy Johnny, and Dutch
is not in Cobra Kai yet.

No, me is their recent action figures have not
included Jimmy unfortunately.

matter. This is really a fastmoving tournament. And while
this is going on, it's intercutwith other people fighting, I
should say, you know, likeDarrell Vidal and other Cobra
guys, you see Johnny doing a lotof amazing things because he's
very acrobatic and tough, butI'm just focused on Daniel, we
can even add up the points we'veactually seen on camera, but
we're not seeing three per fightmy

means but you know what, though? I'm loving
this because this will be alesson to any filmmaker. Yes, do
not take any frame for granted.
People at some point will stopand analyze every damn frame.

to match for another Cobra Kai,a more prominent one Tommy black
belt, played by

We lost him far too young. And if you have not
seen that episode, take a rightCobra Kai season two. I mean, it
brought me to tears. I know.

There was something in my eye for sure. A
lot of

something a few times. But it's fantastic. It
was a beautiful homage and justto get him in the show before
his passing. That was that was amiracle to do that. And anyway,
so Tommy comes out. With asidekick attacking of course
Daniel blocks, then Danielattack style. This is that as

he goes on the attack. He throwsa punch Tommy blocks this is
actually pretty good fight. Hedoes a reverse stomach punch

which is ever been hit theirsock because it's painful.

I believe I had a hairline fracture from a botched
body surfing accident. Iactually elbowed myself landing
on the self and flicked it was aself inflicted Yeah, exactly. I

So no more body surfing for me.

They can be real tender. I never hurt when in a
fight but I definitely got raninto in football on the soccer
field one time. I had a bruisedrib never cracked. But it's hard
to breathe. And that's a scarymoment where

you're like, what you take everything for granted.
Even putting the shirt on,you're like, oh, yeah,

hang on, hang on.
But anyway, so we don't know thescore. But we do know that Tommy
scored appointment Tommy lookspossessed. I mean, he really
does. He's raging, he throws afront kick. Daniel counters with
a right punch just below theCobra Kai logo point. Winner,
Daniel. So Tommy was probably sopossessed because he was down,
you know, had to be there againto one to two. But either way

Daniel moves on and crease forthe first time. Looks concerned.
Oh, like he's knocked out. Threeof my guys. On to the
quarterfinals. Now you start toget the names on the board,
because the all Valleyleaderboard didn't come into
play until now they can't putall these fighters on there. So

we're down to the quarterfinals,which is a round of eight. And
just before I go forward, let'sgo backwards for a second. If
this is round five, round ofeight, and we had four rounds
prior. I don't know how thistournament worked if it was pool
play or whatever. But in mybasic math, there could have
been 128 fighters initially. Imean, we're four rounds in to

get to eight. And Daniel's oneof many, just basic math, like
round two when he fought thatcould have been the round of 64
then the round of 32, the roundof 16 and the round of eight. So
if you think about it, this wasone huge valley you go back and
look at it. It's a spectacle.
There's a ton going on. Unlikeall valley now it's more like

the mainstage back then it waslike even when he comes in the
arena with Ali and Mr. Miyagi.
They're like Daniel Russo,please report to Matt three or
whatever. And they're like,where's that at? Because there's
just a ton going on. Right? So Ibelieve it there was probably
that many fighters or at leastsupposed to be so now we're in
the quarters. And here comes ourguy, Dutch Cobra Kai Of course

he's a black belt. Now here'swhat else I noticed Sal and it
was always lost on me but youlook at the leaderboard is like
oh yeah, of course. Dutch is onthe board. Dutch is his last
name. What not a nickname. Dutchis his last name. It's on the
board. Only last names are onthe board. So wait a second.
Don't lose the last name. And wenever say we don't know. And

much like Tommy we don't knowhis last name Jimmy. We don't
know his last name Jerry. Wedon't know it. On and on, Bobby.
We do know because Brown is onthe board. And that's hilarious.

got really into racing becauseinspired by his father. We did a

to be a part of Cobra Kai. Yeah,yeah. He

came out on his daughter posted on Instagram.

everything started with himputting on his GI and talks to

and then Johnny says, you're dead. Yes, they
line back up. Like I forgot. Iwas saying that.

Yeah. pretty brutal.

You had just said before we got going that you
think Ivan Drago said this andRocky.

Yeah. Do not quote me on this. But I could
have sworn there's a moment andhe kind of almost mumbles it and
he's got the mouthpiece. I thinkhe's bloodied. Yeah, you did. I
think Ivan Drago says that.

I know. He says I must break you. It's a chance to
go back and revisit it. Like wedon't visit that enough. And
then Johnny goes on the attackagain. And he throws a punch to
Daniel's ribs. No call Sal.
Yeah, I was shocked. It lookedlike a point.

Yeah, those are those little moments. And we
recently saw that on seasonfour, Episode 10 of Cobra Kai
where Yeah, it's not a foul. Butit's not a point. And yet your
contact

but this wasn't gonna be a file. This was just a
no call that anything's Gray'snot every Listen,

not everything's like if you just punch a person
is not automatically a point.
Oh, yeah. But he

had him in a spot where there was but maybe it
wasn't clean contact. You know,it could have been a glancing
blow. But watching it I waslike, Oh, wow, that could have
easily been a point. But thathappens in tournaments. So and
then Johnny grabs Daniels skiand you'd asked about this in
the last episode and sweeps bothlegs. And boom, Daniel takes

that Daniel pushes Johnny offwith his injured legs. And of
course Daniel has this issue asthis hobbled leg this
compromised leg. Then Johnnythrows a hi sidekick really Hi
sidekick. Daniel drops down.
This was amazing. I know youremember this. He drops down and
does like a scissor scissors.

Johnny's legs, takes him down.
Johnny goes face down on themat. Like I've never seen him
learn this move. This wasn't oneof me. Yagis moves like yeah, do
the scissor kick and And when hegoes face down Daniel backhands
Johnny's back point

to nothing very much an embarrassing moment for
Johnny.

Yeah, he wasn't expecting it. He probably
didn't. I was like, wait, what?
That that move, though, wasamazing. It really was. And he's
one away from being the champand then Johnny's nose is
bleeding. So here's the two timechamp on the ropes, literally on
the ropes are figurativelythere's no ropes, but you know,
he's in trouble. He is introuble. So then Sal, you hear a
heckler? Oh, the crowd? And whatis this patron have to say,

Hey, Johnny, you're a cream puff,

was probably an extra who just went there? Or
maybe they said, Okay, say who'sgot something for me. Go ahead.

You don't want in yesteryear of moviemaking. They
were a little looser. Like ifthey were to make this movie
today that have to make surethat that voice that from an
extra came from a voiceoverartists in the studio, you know,
it's more distinct now backthen. Yeah, it could literally
have been, because let me tellyou something when I work as an
extra on for the boys, Markryedale came out and he said,

that fight to an end do karatekid part two. So then it's
interesting that down to nothingcreases willing to risk
potential dq to have Johnny goafter some sort of, you know, no
mercy rule.

Well remember the idea he already on the ropes
eliminate Daniel by any meansnecessary. That's kill him.
Yeah, pretty much if if youcould get away with it. That's
what you're gonna do

crazy. So then Johnny comes out and does a low
kick on Daniels injured leg likethe ankle causing him to fall
kind of like a tough sweepcatches him low and causes him
to fall. And then Johnny does aroundhouse at Daniels head
point. And it's brutal, muchlike what Dutch did earlier. So
he like, kicks his leg out. SoDaniels falling and then pops

(04:26:37):
him with his other leg. It'slike a very impressive, and
Daniel isn't paying a hisinjured legs rattled. And he
took another shot to the head.
He might be concussed. Sal fromthe kick by Dutch earlier. Plus,
he's got the injured ribs andthe leg. I mean, he's hanging in
there. He's tough. No doubtabout

Yeah, yes. And so much of fighting, is you got
your endurance, you got to haveendurance. You got to have the
skill and the talent, of course,but you have to be able to take
punishment. If you cannot takepunishment as a fighter, no
matter how good you are. Goodluck to you. Well,

he can do that.
And look at the road here. Andall these Kobrick guys, and then
crease on that move that Johnnyjust did not to Johnny, that
look of approval from thesensei. And then Johnny starts
to drop to his knees like it wasweird shot was another one of
these moments where it's likethe editing, you can just tell
that he's gonna go down and wesee him do this later, and they

(04:27:35):
cut away. So again, it wasprobably just like, Yeah, let's
use that shot. And we don'treally know what he's doing. I
know what he's doing because I'mstudying it and I see it later.
And but we'll talk about that ina second. And then the ref
checks on Daniel and so notimeouts at all. So Daniel is
really banged up and Cobra KaiI'll then be a timeout. There'll
be a chance to go talk and havea little powwow with Mr. Miyagi

and his translator, Ali, maybebring Lucille out of the stands
and she could talk but no,there's nothing. It's like
you're just checking on him. Sothen Johnny attacks does a fake
punch, legs sweep. There it ishow he was told to do it. Daniel
counters raises his leg up.

That's a good way to counter asweep. Just raise your leg up,
spins away. Johnny punchesDaniel blocks with his arm falls
rolls hops up remember that he'slike on the ground, but he gets
up in an instant. And he's gotthe bad legs still. He's hopping
around. And then Johnny doeslike punches lead punches, right
Daniel moves roundhouse tostomach itself. This could have

(04:28:43):
ended it right here. I mean, Ithought oh, is that another one?
They didn't call. But I don'tknow where Johnny grabs that
with both arms grabs that legright before it hits him that
would have been ballgame. So hehas one of Daniels legs in his
arms and sweeps the injured leg.
Oh, nice. Now you reallyunderstand how hurt he was. And
then he tries to do it. Rememberthis, the leg stop like the foot

(04:29:04):
stomp. And Daniel This isrolling away that Johnny does
another foot stomp the otherfoot and he doesn't know. And
Daniel keeps rolling. And thenJohnny drops down and does a
chop on Daniel because he's veryvulnerable as backs exposed to
too. So he is battled back, thechampion the warrior. And then
that's always good. That's it.

(04:29:29):
They just give the trophy andthen Johnny is on the attack
again. He fakes Daniel attacks,punches, punches, punches. So
Daniel is a he's had enough Salhe's on the attack. He's going
full Cobra Kai or ego thing.

He was Eagle fan before Eagle fan way before

you go back.
Another punch. Then Johnny doesa flurry of kicks. You can't
really see they're so tight. Youjust see like body move and
Daniel retreats or treats ortreats off the mat out of
bounce. Ah, is that a deductionisn't it? He's already been
warned back in the first match.
But much like in Karate Kid PartThree. No warning. No carry over

the warning from way back whenearlier today. And then Ali, you
can hear her? Which not a bigline but it's nice to hear her

handspring we don't know what tocall it thing that mastered yeah
from your back though facing upso it's I don't know what you
call it but it he mastered itmuch like Eli did. I call him

Hawk but he was Eli in themoment. Right? He's kind of
switched over. And I noticedthat Johnny in that moment when
he hopped up and all that wasgoing on and Daniel gets it I
noticed that Johnny lost hisheadband. Oh, in the moment, I
saw that on the ground and thenpat e Johnson would like cat
like reflexes reaches in grabsit and pulls it out of the way
so they wouldn't stop filming.
So that was like a real lifeeffect that you see in the

movie, which is kind of neat tosee. And then Johnny does a
roundhouse of Daniels headDaniel blocks with his arm
Johnny another roundhouse ofDaniels head. And again Daniel
blocks. Johnny punches. Danielblocks Johnny yet another
roundhouse of Daniel said.

that kind of maliciousness andintent and violence. It was a no

It's kind of like when we talkedabout the Olympic fighter that
got D queued for doing nothingmore than knocking the guy out.
But it was like well, it wasover the line of a degree of you
know, maybe

a gentleman sport.

So maybe it's some of that because it kicked
at the head if you You don'tfollow through a kick to the
heads like, oh, you hit me. Butsince Daniel dropped like a sack
of potatoes, and it was hard towatch, it was like, Oh my gosh,
I forgot he takes that hit. Butit's not a point. And maybe it
could have been a deduction. So,and then pat E. Johnson comes in
our famous ref and says,

You Okay? Daniel says, Yeah, I'm okay.

Yay, shakes it off. So that's your timeout. The
ref checks it on you. Okay. Ifeel like not now. We would go
check on his head. Could he seesee concussed so now we see
Johnny on both knees facing theother way, what we saw the first
opponent do. And it looks cool,though, I don't know where it

(04:33:37):
comes from or what this is. Soit's like not even that it's an
opponent looking at the way in apeaceful setting. And maybe
there's some sort of karatemove. Or maybe it's an homage to
a show like kung fu. I justdon't know where this particular
move comes from. And then youhear the announcer say,

Whoever wins, our next point will be our new
champion. A couple things here.
Yeah, I see

text behind the ref. And he's not on a mic or
even talking at all. So there'sthat that was just a continuity,
you know? So it's our guy. It's,you know, our announcer Bruce
smallmouth. But not he's notreally saying that. So there's
that. And secondly, if Johnnywins, he would just remain the
champion, and not be named a newchampion. No.

Right. Yeah. He would remain the champion, you
would just call him from thebeginning the defending
champion, then officially right

defending champion. Whoever wins our next
point will be our new champion.
That's exactly what he says,Well, is this much like the 51st
all Valley when the fix was in?
Oh, no, I'm kidding. I'mkidding. I joke I joke. But I
just it's a little things. It'slike, well,

no, believe me, you know, our listeners know, I
used to work at a newspaper.
Every word makes a difference.
Yes. Calling new championinstead of the champion. Yeah,
those words make a difference.
Yeah.

Because at that point in time, he already knows
it's going to be Daniel. Eitherit's written or it said wrong.
It's not caught. And by the way,since it's just a Dubbin because
we see him to standing that itcould have easily been fixed.
Sure. And it made it all thesemany years later. And we're
talking about it here now topodcast but hey, that's what I
love

about it. It became meta is what happened. It
became

meta. And then our raft says no point. No
reason. No deduction Was it toohard. But so it goes we continue
on and then Daniel attacks witha roundhouse of his own props. A
Daniel. Johnny grabs his leg anddoes a left elbow to Daniels

(04:35:42):
injured leg. Oh, it's bad Sal.
And Daniel is in great pain andthis very easily coulda, shoulda
woulda

been a DQ disqualifying

it disqualifying?
Johnny? It was as bad as whatBobby did. You know, it's
already an injured leg. Yeah.
And it's a two to five and hejust maliciously comes down and
hurt. You know if some otherpart but he knew the RAF knew.
And so it looked terrible. Andthen you hear Tommy, who has his

(04:36:16):
own famous line coming up, buthe hear him in the background
right here.

And once you say it's over, Johnny, yeah,

you did it. And then our ref. Hey, son,

you Okay, can you go on?

He's checking. He knows how bad he's looking. He's
hobbling already. Now he's goingto be worse fact. This should
probably give him 15 moreminutes and Miyagi can do more
of his magic. But unlike allValley, no timeouts here,
either. And Mr. Miyagi looksconcerned. And then the most
infamous line, and the entirefranchise is spoken. Give them a

(04:36:54):
body bag. Yeah. Tommy comesthrough again. Oh, my gosh, it's
one of the greatest lines. Idon't know if that's improvised
or scripted. But, Gosh, what aline? Well, it's terrible
meaning no, very militarymeaning as well. But go on.

(04:37:15):
Sorry.

That line became, I think at this point infamous
due to the fact that later onour actor, Rob Garrison, when he
dies on Cobra Kai, on the show,not in real life before in real
life. Yeah. So on the show, hepasses away, and they zip him up
in a body bag

at the very end of the episode, and then
unfortunately, X amount ofmonths later, he passes away but
by the time you watched it Sure,had already passed or whatever
was right on the verge and youhad just watched that episode.
So all of that was very fresh.

Yeah. So then it has this whole

other meaning, you know,

well, to me those words now be Come haunting,
haunting words. Yeah. And thenour ref says Warning for the
illegal contact the knee. Idon't think he

wanted to call it the I don't think he wants to
call the finals on adisqualification. So we're gonna
let it continue. And not tomention he could have called a
winner with the punch. And sowhatever reason and thank
goodness for the Karate Kid,Laura, the show went on a few
more beats because we knowwhat's coming. And Daniel one
pain and great pain goes intothe crane stance with the

(04:38:28):
injured leg, the left leg in theair. It's already hobbled. So
now it's off the ground. AndCree says, finish him. And then
we hear Bill Conti score andbuilds and don't worry I will
make you have a score data thatit's so amazing. And Daniel is

(04:38:49):
so focused and Mr. Miyagirecognizes and approves Daniels
choice of the grain. Yeah,

it's almost like an emergency measure. Yeah,
right. Yeah,

this is all I got.

Almost like Miyagi wouldn't have advised him
to do that. But now he has to doit. Yeah.

Oh, you know, and thank goodness, he saw Miyagi
doing this. Daniel took this onhis own and learn the crane. It
wasn't part of the workload. No.
It was like, Oh, he's doingthat's all working. And Daniel
was terrible at it for a longtime. In fact, pause. And the
Karate Kid when Mr. Miyagi isdoing the crane. Yeah. Which is
very difficult to do. And he'sdoing it on the post. Yes, it's

(04:39:27):
very, very difficult. But who'sactually doing

it? Oh, who was that? Was it the choreographer?
Reroll the doll? Oh, yes.

Yes, Daryl of a doll. So if you go back and
watch it now, it doesn't reallylook like Miyagi. It's slightly
different. So our guide nerveadult, and I say our guy is his
real name, and became his creditcard name. And he also invented
the crank kick for this movie.
So yeah, there's more stuffthere for everybody and us. And
so yes, break glass, do thecrank kick. Johnny not seen it.

(04:39:59):
But he's not looking confused,like Mike Barnes is and the
third karate kid like what I dowith this? What's going on? He
just comes charging and hebegins to throw a punch, which
is not a good move for this ifI'd probably come in with a Leg
Sweep.

Yeah, not a punch. Sure. Yeah. Cuz the leg
will outreach the arm.

Yes. And then Daniel goes into the crane
movement jumps up in the air,hits Johnny in the head with his
healthy leg. He's standing onthe healthy leg. He jumps up,
uses the momentum to whip up,hits Johnny square in the head,

(04:40:37):
and then lands on the injuredleg and quickly switches back to
the right leg. That's what wetalked about this before. It was
like yeah, he really he did aharder version than it is
because he couldn't really standon the left leg for very long.
And it's amazing. We've seen thecrane, you know, everyone's seen
it. The fact that that momentdisplays out that extra beat

(04:40:59):
just because of how it looks.
It's just it was the perfectthing for the movie.

The crane itself has transcended the Karate Kid
transcended the art. Yeah,because now the crane is you'll
see people doing the crane Iforgot to mention to you I saw I
forgot was off as a commercialor something. Somebody does the
crane you know, like suffer acar dealership or something?

Well, they did that. And Larissa auto.

Well, there you go. Yeah.

or How I Met Your Mother? How? Yeah, sorry. I did

there's lots of references. And

anyway, the point is the crane has Yeah.

They're like body bag body bags. Well, that is a
point. By the way, that headkick was intense. And it hits
Johnny square, Johnny. So we gotcaught off there. But Johnny
drops face down again. Pointwinner three to Daniel and the
announcer says

the new champion, Daniel Russo. And then Johnny
grabs the trophy from texts, andthen runs it over to Daniel
who's been lofted up, hands itto him, and he says lines I
think now almost as classic assome of the others. You're
right, LORUSSO,

that's it bodies.
I put their friendship inmotion. And then Sally see
farty, Fernandez and friendspick up our hero.

I still love that Freddy Fernandez is even there.

Mr. Miyagi? Did it we did it. Alright.

Yeah. And then there's a tight shot of Mr.
Miyagi looking back. So

cool. The classic of smile with a little head nod,
right? Yeah,

we freeze on that. And that's how the kid
from New Jersey who moved toreceive it became all Valley
karate champion in 1984. Andforever known as

The Karate Kid.
Wow. That's intense. Tensecoming off all annual off of
Cobra Kai.

I know, I thought I would just take a little peek
at this. And we talked about itas like, wait a second, this
gets in depth. And I was in arabbit hole sound I had to come
out of it. And the only way tocome out of it is to work your
way out of it to beat by beat bybeat.

Well, you know what, the more we go along on
this journey on our personalCobra journeys, I have more
respect for all that. It'salmost like all roads lead to
all value. Yeah, let's notforget that. Let's not forget
what so much is about is aboutthe all Valley. And then of
course, we had a wonderfulconclusion to the last all
Valley 51st annual season forepisode 10.

Amazing. And you're right, it is all roads.
We have never had that many, sowe're never oversaturated with
them. We want more of them. Imean, this was the first one and
set the bar high Karate Kid partthree. Unfortunately, as much as
I liked some of the movie I haveissues with other parts. But
there's only we only see onefight. We don't get to
experience all Valley. We justsee the one fight and that
fights watered down and hasissues. Then compromise brought

it back we've seen to the 50thanniversary in the 51st
anniversary. Great but in fourseasons, they gave us two and
that's probably right. Becauseyou've got to have all Valley
every season. It would bewatered down. Yeah,

we don't have time to miss it. Exactly. But I
will say this just to piggybackon this as far as the
significance of the valley, youknow, on my YouTube channel,

You can enjoy it on the road. And it's funny, I
did hear

this one thing.
It's intermittent becausethere's other dialogue. But you
hear an announcer before youeven meet Bruce smallmouth, I
think it's early on it's likewhen they're still walking in
the arena. And before after Alitells him the rules and before a
Cobra Kai comes by and chantsand shoves him. Yeah. You hear
like, at intermission, there'llbe a exhibition from and the
hair like Master and thenthey're talking to you can't

(04:45:56):
hear so interesting. There's noskills, competition and all
valid until 51st. But there wasan exhibition of some sort of
master did something and there'sintermissions at all valley. So
I thought, well, that's reallyinteresting.

But we never see school guests. Do you think they
had a musical guests back then?

No, I'm thinking it was someone that came out
from a faraway land or trainedunder this guy could have been
board breaking. It could havebeen Kada. It could have been a
weapons thing, but it was it waspretty neat. But we don't see
it. We never see it. We justhear about it.

Yeah. Well, no, I'm gonna listen, I didn't catch
that. I'll say it again. I'mgonna watch it again.

There was a way to dump the audio and just hear
the announcement. There'sprobably so much on deleted
scenes, and I've talked aboutthis, I want to see an inflated
version of the Karate Kid, justwith all the other fixings. And
no, it won't be as good as theoriginal, but we just want to
see this stuff we never saw. Youknow, they shot a lot this day
at the All vowel Oh, yeah. Awhole lot of B roll a whole lot.

But I definitely sift through itif given the opportunity. So
