Jason Connell (00:01):
Whoa, just curious. Welcome to Just curious
media. This is let's talkmovies. And I'm Jason Connell,
on the show. Today I'm talkingabout Midnight Run 1988 just
rewatched this movie holds up. Ihadn't seen it in quite some

(00:23):
time. During the pandemic, Irevisited the movie loved it. So
I watched it again a couple ofdays ago, so I could come on
Let's Talk movies and delve intoit. So let's start with the
synopsis. For those of you whodon't know or don't remember, a
bounty hunter pursues a formermafia accountant, who is also

(00:43):
being chased by a rival bountyhunter, the FBI and his old mob
boss after jumping bail. Wow,there's a lot going on there. A
great movie right the makings ofa great movie. It is in a dez de
Niro. Groden. What else do youneed? Here's the poster for
those of you on YouTube. Booyah, dinero and Groden right

(01:06):
there. Love it. This is what theposter says. This is the text
straight off the poster. RobertDe Niro, a tough bounty hunter
Charles Groden. A sensitivecriminal Monday escaped with
their lives from New York.
Tuesday. In person eight FBIagents in Chicago. Wednesday,
still playing in New Mexico.

(01:27):
Thursday, almost kill each otherby accident. Friday almost
killed each other on purpose.
Midnight Run. This could be thebeginning of a beautiful
friendship. That sums it upperfectly. Here's two guys, one
guy is a bounty hunter and otherones are criminal. They're not
supposed to bond. But yet theydo. Very similar to another
movie that came out this verysame year, which was Planes,

(01:48):
Trains and Automobiles. We'lldelve into that one some other
time. But yeah, two unlikelyguys by the end of it. They're
friends. So fantastic. Now thegenre for this movie action
comedy crime. The release datewas July 20 1988. I first saw it
on VHS probably late 80s. Rightwhen it came out from

(02:09):
blockbuster or Hollywood Videoor somewhere like that. Now the
director Martin breast he alsodid and directed son of a woman,
Beverly Hills Cop going andstyle all great movies. And I
remember him as an actor bitpart in Fast Times at Ridgemont
High. So there's that I thinkhe's in the morgue when they all

(02:30):
go to look at the you know, thedead body and then Spicoli is
there. So yeah, he is in thatscene. Go figure. Now the writer
George Gallo also wrotemiddlemen Bad Boys 29th Street.
The last one I was quite fondof. I actually worked at
Blockbuster when 29th Streetcame out. Loved it. Danny
Aiello. Anthony LaPaglia yearslater, I would meet Danny Aiello

(02:54):
at the Hoboken Film Festival inNew Jersey, and we actually
talked about 29th Street, soyeah, love it. And here was the
writer and the cinematographerDonald E Thorin. Rest in peace.
We lost him February 9 2016 and81. But he was also DP on movies
like lock up the golden childthief Michael Mann's movie

(03:15):
fantastic, great score. Then wehave a very famous composer,
Danny Elfman from Uncle Boingo.
He did so many movies and stilldoes. Here's just a couple,
Charlie and the ChocolateFactory The Nightmare Before
Christmas men and black and hescores so so many more, probably
some more this week. Now thatcast as I've talked about,

(03:39):
Robert De Niro plays Jack Walsh.
Now you know dinero commoditieslike the Best Male Actor we have
right now in anything, but I'lljust mention his Oscar wins and
his Oscar nominations Oscarwinner Best Actor The Godfather
Part Two Raging Bull. Oscarnominated for Best Actor, taxi
driver, The Deer Hunterawakenings, Cape Fear, Oscar

(04:01):
nominated Best Supporting ActorSilver Linings Playbook, and he
probably could have beennominated in one many, many more
times. Now, his counterpart,Charles Groden plays Jonathan
the Duke Mark Ducasse. Sad tosay, we lost Mr. Groden. Rest in
peace, April 21 2021 at 86 He'sin so many movies, but here's

(04:26):
just a couple. Dave, the womanand read one of my personal
favorites, King Kong, not PeterJackson's King Kong, this seven
hour version, but the one thatcame out in the 70s. Then
there's also yo Fett Cotto asAlonzo Mosley, another Rest in
peace, an amazing actor, and hepassed away March 13 2021, at 81

(04:47):
but he's in some great movieslike The Running Man Brubaker.
And the one that I always goback to alien. He's amazing.
Anytime he's on the scene, you're staring at your fat like,
wow, what's he gonna do? He'sintense in this role, but kind
of comedic, but he's FBI. So,and we'll get into more of the

(05:09):
character shortly. Then we haveJohn Ashton as Marvin doerfler
comic relief in this movie as ifyou needed it on top of Groden.
But he's incredible. And he's inmovies like middlemen as well.
Some kind of wonderful BeverlyHills Cop, the first to at least
one of the cops that works withEddie Murphy, and he's in the
Beverly Hills office. Thenthere's Dennis Farina as Jimmy

(05:32):
Cirino. I know another rest inpeace. We lost Farina July
22 2013 at 69 far too young, Ishould say. But he is an iconic
actor as well. Get Shorty SavingPrivate Ryan out of sight. He
was in the TV show crime storyfor a long time. He was an ex
cop. So he really brings that tohis roles and I love that he's a

(05:55):
mob guy in this and we'll talkmore about it. And then the last
one on my cast hitless is Joeypants, Joe pento, Leonardo as
Eddie Moscone. And he's ofcourse in the matrix the
fugitive Risky Business one ofmy all time favorite movies as
Guido the killer pimp. And okay,so I'm going to play the trailer

(06:18):
to really set the mood and knowwhat is going to break down the
movie very quickly and have somefun with it. Okay, so here goes.

Media (06:28):
Robert De Niro is a bounty hunter. Teach how to talk
nice to people and not shoot atthem. Charles Grodin is an
accountant who embezzled $15million from the mob. It is
truly in your best interest tojust relax it's a lot of money
and I want this guy to pick itup. I want to pick it up fast
the mob wants him dead. The FBIwant him alive. I'm gonna bring

(06:53):
him into federal courtunderstand the sunglasses
they're really nice. I thinkgovernment issued at all you
guys go like to the same storeagain. And his bail bondsman
wants him in LA in 72 hours thecan't fly Alpha macro phobia and
claustrophobia I'll tell youwhat if you don't cooperate
you're going to suffer from thephobia tribal has a funny way of

(07:14):
bringing people together youcannot race the police car and
race the police jacquela rightI'm gonna Boise Idaho Wait a
minute. I'm in Anchorage Alaska.
Why would you do you enjoyyourself? This is my room and
that's your room tonight? I wassomewhere between Toledo and
Cleveland. Oh come on. Come oncigarettes are killers kills the

(07:36):
highest killers back there I cantake this herd to kill who
hasn't killed this guy. You hadthis guy what four days five
hours left he just forced thegrand Yeah Give us a kiss from

(08:00):
the director of Beverly HillsCop What is your plan? Guys a
lot of traveling. Midnight Run

Jason Connell (08:37):
still work. So that gives you a sense of kind
of the tone to it. You know, itlooks a little silly, but it
works. And the film reallyfollows Jack Walsh dinero and he
is a tough ex cop turned bountyhunter who also lost his job
because of the mob of all thingsJimmy Serrano, but he's hired to

(08:59):
track down and capture Jonathanthe Duke Mark Ducasse, Charles
Groden and accountant whoembezzled millions from the
mafia. Boss, which was JimmySerrano. Now of course, 15
million back then. It's still alot of money. Don't get me
wrong, but if they made themovie today remade it, they'd
make it 150 million or whatever.
Now, Eddie Moscone is the bailbondsman who hires Jack and you

(09:20):
could see him he's always calland checking in on him, like
whereas you have 72 hours to getto La because it's Charles
Gordon pulls a fast one and saysI can't fly. So they're in New
York, he's got to get him to LA.
So they have to take buses anddrive and anything and
everything to get there but aplan so that creates, you know,

(09:41):
puts everything in motion. Allthese characters because if they
just flew there, they'd bethere. There's no movie. Anyway.
So Eddie wants to Duke forobvious reasons. He's put up the
money. He's a bail bondsman, andhe put up a lot of money. I
think it's close to half amillion dollars. And so he needs
him or he's out the money. Now,Alonzo Mosley is the FBI Agent

(10:01):
who wants to Duke so he cantestify against Jimmy and Jimmy
Serrano wants to Duke dead. Soall this is going on. And Jack
just wants Oh, it's sorry. Andas also Marvin doerfler. He's a
fellow bounty hunter who Eddiealso hired to get the Duke as a
backup. And that's John Ashton.
And I'm telling you, the movieworks without him. But with him,

(10:23):
the comedic value just increasestenfold. He's amazing in this,
because his humor is sodifferent than the dryness of
Groden. And I think it justelevates this movie to a whole
new level. Absolutely. Now, Jackjust wants to get his $100,000
bounty and open up a coffeeshop, he's out of the game, you

(10:46):
know, he was an ex cop. Now he'sa bounty hunter, and he's
looking for an exit. And theDuke makes things difficult
because again, he won't fly. Hesays he can't fly. Turns out, he
knows how to fly. But he'sacting like I can't be on a
plane, because he wants to gethim to go cross country. And
maybe he can a bond with himwhich he does, or be escape,
which he also does. But again, you got to see the movie. Now,

(11:08):
of course that creates numerouscomedic and action packed
situations, much like you saw inthe trailer are heard in the
trailer. Now, in the end, Jacklets the Duke go spoiler alert,
after he helped set up Jimmy andthe mob to the FBI, and they
were satisfied, so they nolonger wanted the Duke. And then
Marvin misses out on thebalcony. And that's a whole

(11:32):
other storyline, the only personwho's really screwed as Eddie is
out the bond money in the end.
And of course, the Duke allalong, unbeknownst to Jack had
like a money belt. And he giveshim $300,000 At the end of the
movie after he agreed to let himgo. So it wasn't like a

(11:52):
negotiation. And that's threetimes what he was gonna get. And
he'd go off and to the sunsetand open his coffee shop. Now,
there is one scene that we don'trevisit, and I think it brought
some drama to the movie forsure. It was like wow, seeing it
again. I thought my God's reallyheavy and important. But I wish

(12:12):
I had been a pay off some sortof mentioned. But during this
crazy cross country road trip,Jack takes the duty to visit his
wife, his ex wife and hisdaughter who hadn't spoken to in
like nine years to get a coupledollars because they were broke
on the road. And she is nothappy to see him. But she's
moved on and she gives him hercar. So they can you know, mosey

(12:36):
down the street. And herdaughter and him have seen his
daughter, and it's verytouching. She's wonderful. And
she even tries to give him herbabysitting money. It's just
really touching. And all youwant at the end of the movie is
some sort of reference, like, Igotta get to know my kid. I'm
gonna open that coffee shop, andmaybe I'll do it, or my kid is

(12:58):
located this something becauseit was like, wow, you love Jack,
but you don't love hisrelationship with his daughter,
which he has created and causedby neglect. He moved on and, and
then his wife got remarried. Butanyway, there's that. But it was
really an important thing. Now,here's some trivia on the movie.
Robert De Niro initially turneddown the role of Jack Walsh

(13:21):
multiple times. However, afterreading the script again, he
changed his mind and acceptedthe role, which ultimately
became one of his most popularcomedic performances. Totally
agree. This movie is not thesame without Robert De Niro.
Incredibly important. Now,Charles Groden was not the
original choice for the role ofJonathan, the Duke Mark Ducasse

(13:42):
actors such as Robin Williams,Al Pacino and James Caan were
considered for the role beforeGroden was cast. I'm sure
Williams would have been greatand Pacino and that would have
been a chance for that's prettyinteresting. Pacino and to Nero
to be together before heat, andthen there's gone all would have
been fine, but this roll wasreally made for grown his Umer?

(14:05):
It's worth watching the moviejust again to see his dryness,
working off De Niro's, you knowstiffed closed up self. It's
really funny. Their banter isfantastic. And of course, it
went on to be one of thehighlights and groans career so
I'm glad he did it. And wewouldn't have we may not be
talking about midnight runtoday, had he not been in it.

(14:28):
Anyway, I hope that this justrewatched episode inspires
anyone to revisit it or watch itfor the first time. And yeah,
again, I think it's a very nonconventional buddy movie that
just gets better with age. Sowhat else can you ask for? So
without further ado, pleaseenjoy. Midnight Run. So thank
