Imagine being an 18 year old African American teenager in 1990 from the City of St. Louis with so much to live for yet your life was snatched from you because you were wrongfully accused of a murder you didn’t commit. Imagine having an alibi and several witnesses who corroborate your innocence yet your public defender never put them on the stand. Imagine getting railroaded by a Criminal Justice System that is Racially Unjust that offered you a lesser sentence if your admitted to a crime you didn’t commit. Imagine after serving nearly 28 years in prison being granted an evidentiary hearing in which the only two witnesses from the original case, recant their testimony admitting they lied and never saw the actual shooter. Imagine a Judge ruling in your favor declaring your innocence under what’s considered the “Freestanding Claim of Innocence” yet, you are still in jail because a Missouri Supreme Court precedent holds that “Freestanding Claim of Innocence” are limited to prisoners on Death Row.
