Speaker 1 (00:02):
Recently we began a
dive into the book of 1 Samuel
and in fact we made reference tothe fact that 1 and 2 Samuel,
as they are written in ourBibles, divided up as 1 and 2
Samuel originally, reallyweren't written that way.
They were written as one book, but because of the length of the
(00:27):
book it was divided into twosections One, 1 Samuel.
Second Samuel was the other one, and 1 Samuel encompasses
roughly 100 years of history inIsrael, and then 2 Samuel
encompasses another 50.
So altogether about 150 years.
(00:49):
An interesting point that whenwe read the book of 1 Samuel out
loud it takes roughly two and ahalf hours right around there,
but in all reality it took ahundred years in time to
(01:10):
actually live that out.
And so we can look at thingssometimes in reading and think
well, they just happened, youknow, in succession, day one,
day two, day three or maybe acouple of weeks, but sometimes
(01:32):
there's a significant period oftime in between events.
Something will take place andthen for a stretch of time it
seems like nothing.
I mean nothing is taking place.
For example, hannah, one of thecharacters in 1 Samuel, the
(01:59):
mother of Samuel, she was barrenfor most of her adult life, her
childbearing years she wasbarren, whereas her partner or
(02:23):
Elkanah's second wife call her apartner.
Elkanah's second wife, penina, was prolific in the conception
and delivery of children.
She had many children, butHannah waited a long time years
(02:51):
to have one child, and sometimesin our lives it takes time for
things to develop.
In the case of Hannah, samuelwas delivered right on time, and
God delivers things right ontime.
(03:11):
Sometimes it doesn't feel likethat because we live in the
realm of time and space and Godis eternal and so for him a day
is like a thousand years and athousand years is like a day.
It's really not relevant ineternity, but we have this
(03:38):
experience in time and spacewhere we feel the difference and
sometimes it feels likenothing's happening, when in all
actuality there are thingstaking place behind the scenes.
But Panina had a lot ofchildren, but they were
(04:01):
primarily children for the goodof their own family.
Hannah had one child and he wasfor the good of the entire
nation of Israel, and even goodto this very day, because we're
(04:22):
reading from some of hiswritings and some of his
activity that took place thathas impacted the nation of
Israel but is impacting us tothis very day and Hannah waited
(04:44):
a long time, but God rewardedher greatly.
And so we're going to pick upfrom where we left off in the
first chapter of 1 Samuel andwe're going to read through to
(05:05):
the end of the chapter, verse 28.
So we're going to read verses19 through 28 and then make a
few comments concerning what wefind in there.
We're going to dig some thingsout.
So 1 Samuel, chapter 1, verse 19says early the next morning
(05:32):
they arose and worshipped beforethe Lord and then went back to
their home.
At Ramah, elkanah lay withHannah, his wife, and the Lord
remembered her.
So in the course of time, hannah conceived and gave birth
(05:53):
to a son.
She named him Samuel, sayingbecause I asked for the Lord and
he heard me.
When the man Elkanah went upwith all his family to offer the
annual sacrifice to the Lordand to fulfill his vow, hannah
(06:16):
did not go.
She said to her husband Afterthe boy is weaned, I will take
and present him before the Lordand he will live there always.
Do what seems best to you, elkanah.
Her husband told her Stay hereuntil you have weaned him Only
may the Lord make good his word.
(06:40):
So the woman stayed at home andnursed her son until she had
weaned him.
After he was weaned, she tookthe boy with her, young as he
was, along with a three-year-oldbull, an ephah of flour and a
skin of wine, and brought him tothe house of the Lord at Shiloh
(07:02):
.
When they had slaughtered thebull, they brought the boy to
Eli and she said to him assurely as you live, my Lord, I
am the woman who stood herebeside you praying to the Lord.
I prayed for this child and theLord has granted me what I
asked of him.
So now I give him to.
(07:24):
The Lord has granted me what Iasked of him, so now I give him
to the Lord For his whole life.
He will be given over to theLord and he worshiped the Lord
there.
Once again, there is a lot ofmeat on the bone in this
(07:47):
particular passage of Scripture.
We pick it up from when we leftoff previously, when Elkanah
takes his family and they goback to their home at Ramah and
over the course of time, elkanahmakes love to his wife and she
(08:13):
conceives.
She conceives and she bears ason, gives birth to a son and
names him Samuel.
Meaning the Lord is heard.
Interesting.
(08:39):
Her prayer was answered, but itwasn't answered in a perfunctory
way.
It was actually answered in themidst of intimacy.
See, elkanah loved Hannah andso when they lay together, when
he knew her like that, it was inthe midst of intimacy.
(09:03):
And Samuel was born, conceived,I should say he was conceived
in the midst of intimacy.
God answered his, answeredHannah's prayer.
He gave her a son, but he wasconceived in intimacy.
(09:29):
And funny thing about it is Godwas in the midst of that and he
loves to do things in the midstof intimacy.
You see, god is a relationalGod.
He's not just a perfunctorybeing that mechanically spits
things out because we put aquarter in.
(09:50):
He loves us and he lovesinteracting with us and he loves
intimacy.
God loves us on a level that isdeeper than the level of a man
(10:14):
knowing a woman.
But the comparison is madeno-transcript and he said I
never knew you.
It's the same connotation aswhen a man knows a woman,
(10:40):
meaning they have intercourse.
The Lord penetrates our lifedeeply and loves to have
interaction with us on a deeplevel.
That's powerful, that'sbeautiful, that's wonderful.
(11:02):
He gives us things incommunication that we couldn't
receive through another humanbeing.
So those who don't haverelationships with a man or a
(11:28):
woman, you're not left out inthe cold when it comes to
intimacy.
You can walk in a very intimateway and know intimate things,
because God penetrates our lifeon a very intimate level,
hallelujah.
So Hannah conceives and it comestime for again Elkanah to go
(11:56):
back up to Shiloh, because threetimes a year a man needed to go
and appear before the Lord, andso it came time for him to go
and she said I'm not going to go, I'm going to wean this child.
She wanted time with Samuel, she loved Samuel.
(12:23):
So Samuel was reared in anenvironment of intimacy and love
.
He was loved.
He wasn't just handed off, likesome of us have just been
handed off, left without anycare, just handed off.
(12:46):
But God, but God doesn't leaveus that way, and some of us have
experienced families ofintimacy.
Samuel experienced a familythat was a close family on one
(13:07):
level, but there was competitionon the other regular family,
but there was competition on theother regular family.
But Hannah saw to it thatSamuel was raised knowing that
he was loved.
(13:27):
I think it's very important forchildren to know that they're
loved.
They're loved, they're wanted,they're desired, they're not a
burden.
So she weaned him.
And you know?
Here's another thing she weanedhim and it would have been very
(13:49):
tempting for a woman who wasbarren for years to finally have
a child and to have the shameremoved that was associated with
a barren woman in that culture.
To have that removed finally, yes, I have a child.
Like I'm worthy, I'm someone,but Hannah didn't succumb to
(14:11):
that temptation.
But Hannah didn't succumb tothat temptation and that
temptation is there for all ofus.
God gives us the answer to aprayer and with that answer
there was a condition that wesaid we'll do this if you do
that and it comes time for us todo what we said we're going to
do and we like what we have thatGod's given and we say I want
(14:36):
to keep it, I want to hold on toit.
Easy to fall into thattemptation and have that thing
that needs to live be suffocated.
We can suffocate things.
We as people can suffocatethings.
(14:58):
Religion can suffocate things, can keep people from growing and
expanding.
No, you shouldn't be doing that.
No, you just stay here and dothis.
I will take care of youReligiously, meaning, don't
venture outside the group.
(15:19):
That's unhealthy control.
I believe we should be sentwhen we go.
But being suffocated.
No, hannah could have suffocatedSamuel, but she didn't.
(15:40):
That's wise.
And she also kept her promise.
Be careful of the vows that youmake before God, because he
takes them seriously.
It's better to say nothing thanto make a vow and not fulfill
(16:03):
it.
But Hannah fulfilled her vowand gave Samuel away to live in
the house of the Lord for therest of his life and then from
(16:27):
there, he was sent out to doother things, as a prophet and
as a judge in Israel, blessedthe nation, was used by God to
ordain kings, anoint them.
(16:49):
This little boy who was givenover to a priest who we're going
to find out later was reallynot living up to his calling,
and his sons were even worse.
It was a religious organization, supposed to be spiritual,
supposed to be alive, supposedto be relational, but it was
(17:12):
religious self-seeking in manyrespects.
But nonetheless, samuel wasgiven over even to that, because
he was given over to God, notjust to an organization but to
God, and God was faithful to hisword.
(17:41):
Like Elkanah said that sheshould go ahead and stay home,
but only may the Lord make goodhis word.
God made good his word.
God makes good his word.
(18:02):
God makes good his word.
God makes good his word.
And Hannah said to Eli in thepresence of the Lord so now I
give him to the Lord for hiswhole life He'll be given over
(18:25):
to the Lord.
His whole life, he will begiven over to the Lord.
And then it says and heworshiped the Lord.
There, isn't that powerful.
He wasn't just a littlesniveling brat.
There was something about theway he was nurtured and the
(18:49):
things that Hannah had spokeninto his life that molded him
into the man he would become.
Ladies, you have a powerful roleto play in the raising of
children, and those of you whoare helping raise children who
(19:13):
are not your own.
God bless you.
You have, seriously, you have avery, very, very high and holy
calling and I commend you forwhat you're doing.
Continue on, continue on,continue on speaking into the
lives of these young children asa woman, as a mother to them.
(19:36):
Let God mother them through you, because it's going to shape
their lives forever.
You never know.
It might be a Samuel in yourmidst, maybe many, but he
worshipped the Lord there.
(20:01):
Our highest call in life is toworship God.
There is no higher call.
Our purpose to live on planetEarth, first and foremost, is to
worship God, meaning to giveHim everything in honor of who
(20:23):
he is.
He's worth it, he's worthy ofit all, he's worthy of
everything we have.
In fact, the other day, in mytime, specific time spent with
God, I heard him say to me David, all I want is everything,
(20:53):
that's all.
All I want is everything, andthat is faith.
Faith is everything.
Trusting God with everything, trusting him with everything,
(21:17):
everything Trusting him, that'sworship, that's faith.
In fact, it says, without faithit's impossible to please God.
Meaning God is not satisfied,he's not filled up, like when
you have a big, nice, good meal, you're satisfied.
Faith satisfies God and God'snot satisfied with anything else
(21:41):
, but everything.
And that's what faith is.
Faith is nothing less.
Anything less than that isreligion.
It's not relational.
And faith is relational.
It's giving god everything witha heart of intimacy, not a
heart of just perfunctory duty.
(22:02):
Well, I guess got to give mylife.
That does nothing.
Who'd want that in arelationship?
If we're just on a human level, well, I guess I got to spend
time with you.
Spare yourself the trouble,don't bother.
(22:27):
But when it's with a heart ofintimacy.
Samuel was conceived in intimacy, reared in intimacy and offered
in intimacy, and he worshipedGod in intimacy all the days of
his life.
Hallelujah, hallelujah, let'spray.
(22:52):
Father, you said all you wantis everything.
So I offer you again everything.
I trust you with everything.
You are worthy of my complete,100%, everything.
Trust.
We trust you Collectively.
(23:13):
We give ourselves to you and sayhave us, oh Lord, all of us,
everything.
And we want everything of you,all of you.
We want you to penetrate ourlives.
We want you to know us, of you,all of you.
We want you to penetrate ourlives.
We want you to know us.
We look to you, holy Spirit, for your guidance, for your
(23:38):
leadership.
Rear us up, like Samuel wastrained in the ways of the Lord,
where Samuel was raised inintimacy, raised as Holy Spirit
to serve Jesus in a way thathe's worthy of Lord Jesus, we
(23:58):
honor you as our Savior, as ourLord, and we give ourselves to
you and want to.
I want to be like you in allways everything, not only in how
you functioned here, but howyou're functioning where you are
(24:20):
now.
Teach us to function above sowe can impact the world that we
live in.
We come on up and call yourglory down, lord.
We thank you, we stand here inthe name of Jesus and we say
(24:42):
amen, amen, amen, amen, amen, all right folks, amen, amen,
amen, alright folks.
