Speaker 1 (00:02):
I was just thinking
recently on how the Bible is the
most unique book I've ever readand am still reading.
In fact, I'm captivated by whatI read most often.
There are sometimes and this isjust truth in advertising here,
(00:27):
so to speak there are sometimes where it's a discipline to
read.
It's kind of like just plowinga field.
There's nothing too glamorousabout plowing, but it's a work
that needs to be done if you'regoing to plant and if you're
going to have a harvest.
(00:48):
Well, sometimes it's like thatwhen I read from the scriptures.
But most often and almostalways, if I read long enough,
at least one thing is going tobe highlighted from what I'm
(01:11):
reading and just speak directlyto my heart, and then a unique
thing also takes place.
I begin to see how thescriptures can be communicated
(01:31):
so that it will impact otherpeople's lives as well.
That of and by itself isactually a gift the gift of
teaching or preaching orprophesying.
It's not something that comesnaturally Now.
There are natural things that aperson can do to prepare to
(01:55):
teach and preach and all thatgoes along with that, and that
would be the ability to puttogether homiletics or homilies,
and there's a benefit to thatto communicate things and have
other people critique them, because we learn from the input
(02:17):
that other people give to us,but sometimes, in fact I'm going
to say for myself all the timewhen it comes to preaching or
teaching or prophesying, speaking the oracle of the Lord
from the scriptures, it comeswith a supernatural anointing.
(02:39):
It's an unction Indescribable.
I can't put words to it exactly, except it's a power that comes
from within, and when it'sreleased it has an impact on the
world around me.
So I was thinking, though, considering the scriptures,
(03:23):
there's not one person or onegroup of people that can take
credit for putting together the66 books that I have in the can
of scriptures that I read from.
There's not one group that cansay I've put all of them
together, or one person saying Ihave put all of them together.
And we have a collection of 66books, and God has uniquely
(03:43):
overseen the process for quitesome time, and what we have in
(04:05):
front of us is hands down, without a doubt, the written
Word of God, and from thiscollection of 66 books 39 in the
Old Testament, 27 in the NewTestament Peter, one of the
disciples, then one who becamean apostle of Jesus, is credited
(04:31):
in writing two of the 27letters or books that we have
making up the New Testament.
The New Testament and 2 Peter, chapter 1, is a portion of
Scripture that I want to readfrom because it carries with it
(04:57):
a unique message to us today, even though it was penned 2,000
years ago.
It carries with it the abilityto speak to our hearts today.
And so, from 2 Peter, hissecond letter, chapter 1, he's
(05:27):
writing to a group of peoplethat were really under some
pretty heavy persecution.
They were being treated harshly, poorly, as a result of their
belief, their faith in Jesus.
They were being ostracized fromthe community that they lived
(05:49):
in, and community life in thatcontext, in that time, in that
setting, was very important, because that's where commerce
took place and produce wasexchanged and people were able
(06:11):
to buy and sell and eat and beclothed and have built in All
the things that go along withhaving a life and having
interaction and relationshipswith other people.
Having interaction,relationships with other people,
the people that were believersin Jesus were experiencing
(06:32):
persecution, because thatsometimes goes with being a
believer in Christ.
The powers of darkness look tolash out against the person and
they use people to do it,oftentimes in conjunction with
their own oppression.
They use people and the fallennature of people also does not
(06:54):
want to necessarily hear aboutthe light, because they love the
darkness and when you turn thelight on, it exposes things, and
they don't want things exposed.
And so they were persecutingthis group of people in the area
that Peter was addressing andhe wrote them this letter and
(07:18):
through the course of 2,000years, we still have that letter
translated into countlessdialects and we have it in the
English language.
So I'm going to be reading from2 Peter 1, verses 3 through 11.
(07:44):
And again, peter's addressingthis group of people that are
being persecuted.
He's talking about growing upbefore we grow old, growing up
in our Christian faith and ourwalk with Jesus becoming mature.
And there are certain qualitiesthat he's pointing out.
And as he's pointing them out,he's providing, with the words
(08:09):
that he's saying, the spirituallife to water that garden of
faith so that growth can takeplace.
And it's relevant to you and Itoday.
So he writes his divine power, meaning the power of God, his
(08:37):
divine power, has given useverything we need for life and
godliness, and that wordgodliness means God likeness
like God.
He's given us everything weneed for life and to be like God
.
He's done this through ourknowledge of him, who calls us
(09:03):
by his own glory and goodness.
Through these, he has given ushis very great and precious
promises.
God makes promises and when hedoes, he's going to keep them,
and he's made some promises toyou, he's made some promises to
me and he intends on keepingthem.
(09:24):
However, there are certainthings that we need to be aware
of concerning the fulfillment ofthose promises.
So Peter goes on to say so thatthrough them, the precious
(09:44):
promises, through them, you mayparticipate in the divine nature
and escape the corruption inthis world caused by evil
desires.
Isn't that true?
Anytime you have a desire thatis contrary to the things that
you know are right, they areevil.
(10:09):
Things don't end up well whenwe follow those things.
And so Peter wants this groupof people, and he wants them to
really know that there's a wayof escape.
But Holy Spirit wants you and Ito know the same thing, because
(10:33):
it's God who's giving Peterthis insight.
So he goes on to say this man,he goes.
So, for this very reason, makeevery effort to add to your
faith goodness and to goodness.
Knowledge and to knowledge.
(10:56):
Self-control and toself-control.
Perseverance and toperseverance, godliness and to
godliness, brotherly kindnessand to brotherly kindness, love.
For if we possess thesequalities in increasing measure,
(11:17):
they will keep you from beingineffective and unproductive in
your knowledge of our Lord JesusChrist.
But if anyone does not havethem, he is nearsighted and
blind and has forgotten that hehas been cleansed from his past
sins.
Therefore, my brothers, be allthe more eager to make your
(11:39):
calling and election sure, forif you do these things, you will
never fall and you will receivea rich welcome into the eternal
kingdom of our Lord and Savior, jesus Christ Powerful.
He's telling us that there is away in which we can grow and
(12:01):
mature, and it's by seeingthings added to our initial
belief in Jesus, that initialfaith of saying Lord, I believe.
And that moment when that takesplace, we become a new creation
.
But we don't stay, or it's notthe intention of God for us to
(12:26):
stay, in that infant stage.
He wants us to grow and matureas we move on in our walk with
the Lord.
We grow up before we grow old,and there are certain things
(12:49):
that he highlights at differenttimes so that we can focus our
attention in on those things, and two of the things that come
to mind that I want to passalong in this podcast episode
are persistence and consistency.
(13:11):
Persistence and consistency,persistence and consistency.
We need to be people that havepersistence in the way that we
do things, meaning we don't giveup or we don't lose sight of
(13:36):
what it is that we started doingwhen we said God has given me
this to do.
We are persistent, we don't letthe powers of darkness thwart
(13:59):
or sidetrack us from usfulfilling the commission that
God has on our lives, and ittakes persistence, and
persistence will eventuallyprevail.
That's a real good word rightthere.
Persistence will actuallyprevail in your life if you are
(14:24):
persistent.
If you are weak and you go backand forth, you really can't
expect anything to take place.
If you're hot one day, cold thenext, if you are focused one
day and then next you are justtotally without focus at all, we
(14:48):
give up.
We say, ah, that's just toohard.
I mean those are all realthings that face us and some of
you, some of you right now, needto know that your persistence
is really actually a veryimportant part of your walk with
(15:10):
the Lord.
Maybe not the most glamorousPersistence, not necessarily the
most glamorous part of walkingwith Jesus.
I mean we like to see theresults.
I love to see some of thebreakthroughs, but between the
breakthroughs and some of thegreat results, there's
(15:33):
persistence.
Persistence in the times wherethings are just kind of like
plowing the ground.
There's not much glamour tothem and it seems like it's
taking longer than it should.
Persistence Believing when it'snot always easy to believe.
(15:57):
Staying with something evenwhen there's opposition or
there's not really any resultsto speak of right away, or even
after a period of time, but ifyou know that it's God that's
given something for you to do,something, that is important.
(16:21):
Persistence.
Persistence is absolutely vital.
Sometimes we quit right beforethings actually become fruitful
(16:53):
can be avoided if we areencouraged in our faith and we
learn how to encourage otherswhen they are going through a
time of persistence.
Not being judgmental orcritical, but actually being
(17:18):
encouraging, saying I'm with youin your journey.
Sometimes that's all it takes.
It doesn't take a big longspeech Just knowing that someone
is saying I'm praying for you,I'm with you.
I see what's going on.
I want to let you know I loveyou, I'm with you.
(17:39):
Is there anything I can do?
Wow, wow.
That's something that we canall learn from.
Consistency.
There's persistence right, juststaying with it, being
(18:04):
persistent and consistency beingconsistent in what you say,
what you think, what you do.
Being consistent Even when it'seasy to say, well, I think that
(18:30):
that part's not really workingso well, I'm going to change
things up a little bit.
Or nah, that's really notworking so well, I'm just going
to quit.
I don't know, the fellowshipthat I'm part of, I don't know,
(18:50):
it's kind of dry.
I think I'm just going to quit.
Or things got kind of rough,I'm just going.
I think I'm just going to quit.
Or things got kind of rough,I'm just going to quit, I'm just
going to quit.
There's something about beingconsistent where your word means
something and the consistencythat you have in providing what
(19:14):
it was that you said you'regoing to provide.
And the quality is consistent, regardless of whether a person
is rich or poor.
What they get is consistent.
What we say, how we handlethings, the integrity of our
life is consistent.
(19:39):
Persistence and consistency Twothings that go into our lives,
that make up a mature person, and also they are the keys to
success.
If you have a business, persistence and consistency are
(20:01):
two key elements of the kingdomof God that will unlock your
ability to generate income fromwhat you do.
If you are persistent andyou're consistent, you don't
even have to be the best at whatyou do, but if you're
persistent and consistent, thepayoff will come.
(20:22):
It's a principle that works inall areas.
If you're a teacher, if you'rea spiritual leader, if you're a
teacher, if you're a spiritualleader, if you're a community
leader, if you work in the areaof government, persistence and
(20:47):
consistency are kingdomqualities.
When I say kingdom, I meankingdom of God qualities.
They make up the quality of thekingdom of God.
The word of God is persistentand consistent.
Check that out.
God's word is persistent andconsistent.
(21:10):
His word outlasts things thatoppose it and consistently, the
quality is pure and good.
We're called to that life.
Let's allow God to develop thatlife within us, and he does it
(21:31):
by empowering us with his spirit, and we are filled with his
spirit and we are filled withhis word.
Let's pray.
Father, thank you that you giveto us the ability to be
persistent and consistent, thegodliness, the godlikeness, the
(21:56):
divine nature that you've givento us, that you've imparted into
our lives, your life, holySpirit.
I ask that you just enliventhat and cause it to grow and
develop in all these areas thatwe've looked at, all the areas
that you caused Peter tohighlight, and now you're
(22:21):
highlighting them in our livesas well.
Take these words and illuminatethem, give revelation to them
and give the ability for us,please Lord, to act upon them so
we become more like Jesus bythe actions that we live out.
And it's in his name we prayand say amen, amen, amen, amen.
(22:48):
