Speaker 1 (00:03):
I was born in 1959,
and I was raised on a small farm
outside of a small town by thename of Hibbing, minnesota, and
(00:23):
I was the fifth child with foursisters all older than me in
front of me, and so I was thebaby of the family, and I was
born during what's now known asthe baby boomer generation those
(00:49):
people born between 1946 and1964.
And so I am a baby boomer bybirth.
However, in 1972, I was bornagain.
I had an experience with Jesusat the age of 13 that
(01:15):
transformed my life.
Holy Spirit introduced me tohim in a very powerful way and
my life was changed as a resultof him imparting to me his life
and taking from me my sins andforgiving me, cleansing me and
(01:42):
showing me that he took them, the penalty of them.
He took them to the cross, andat the age of 13, I felt the
weight of sin.
Up to that point in time, Ireally hadn't thought about it
too much, but when I met Jesus, the epitome of love and holiness
(02:06):
, the contrast between me andhim was so stark.
Even at the age of 13, Irecognized that I was a sinner,
but he showed me that he tookthat and brought it to the cross
, the penalty of it, and insteadof me having death as my future
(02:32):
, he gave me his life, not justfor that moment, but for
eternity, his eternal life, andso I was born again at the tail
end of what's known as the Jesusmovement.
Now, interestingly enough, atthe age of 21, I came into a
(03:09):
very committed, deep commitment,my life, deeply, completely
committed to Jesus and filled, baptized into his spirit and
filled with his spirit, empowered at the age of 21.
(03:34):
I have experienced some thingsthat are part of different
(04:06):
sociological turning points thecharismatic renewal that was
sweeping the nations, and I wasone of those who had been swept
up in it, and so that was verysignificant.
But the time between the age of13 and 21, I had experienced
(04:34):
kind of a wandering around, andeven though I was born again, I
really didn't have any.
There was no really follow-upto that in my life, because even
though I was a church-goingyoung person, it was mainly just
(04:59):
religious, just duty, justgoing through the motions.
Religious, just duty, justgoing through the motions.
So Christianity, the Bible, jesus, it lost some of its
allure and also the influencesof other people got to me and I
just began wandering around.
And in my wandering around Istumbled onto drugs, sex and
(05:28):
rock and roll and I became oneof those people.
That was my lifestyle and Ithought that's the way I was
going to be until I die.
That's the way I was going tobe until I die, except that's
(05:49):
when God intervened and stoppedme in my tracks at the age of 21
, like I said.
But in part of my wanderings Isaid I had gotten involved in
that whole drugs, sex, rock androll thing.
And involved in that wholedrugs, sex, rock and roll thing.
Well, the drugs part of itintroduced me to LSD and a
(06:09):
variety of others, but LSD wasprobably my drug of choice
because it was what I consideredto be mind-expanding.
Many people had told me aboutsome of the negative experiences
they had with it and theysounded terrible, but I hadn't
(06:31):
had that.
I had had what I consider to bevery good experiences, come to
find out that it was a portalinto the dark realm, is a portal
into the dark realm, psychedelics from a KI, and the
end result is very negative.
(06:52):
But, like most, any things thatare sinfully enticing, they're
enticing and if they weren'tenticing, we probably wouldn't
buy into them if we saw the endresult.
(07:12):
So, anyway, the psychedelicswere very intriguing to me and,
as a result of my spiritualsojourning with the use of
psychedelics, when I encounteredJesus at the age of 21 and the
(07:36):
power of his spirit, there wassome language that was being
used and it was a wholedifferent thing.
It wasn't just religionChristianity was far from a
religion.
It was relationship and beingempowered and citizens of the
kingdom of God and just doingthe stuff, man, not just reading
about it, watching Things fromthe past and singing about them,
(08:01):
but Living it out, doing.
What we were watching andreading and I heard about this
one phrase really got to me.
It was called walking in thespirit, man.
I heard that and I'm like Iwant that Walking in the Spirit
(08:27):
Come to find out.
It meant walking in cooperationwith Holy Spirit, the Spirit of
God.
Even better, even greater, evengreater, even greater.
(08:49):
So I was hungry and I lookedaround at some of the people
that I was hanging out with.
I saw this one guy that was alittle bit older than me and a
real cool guy and he reallyseemed like he knew what he was
talking about and so I walked upto him and I said, hey, I got a
question.
(09:09):
He goes yeah, what man?
I said this, walking in thespirit.
He goes yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
I said what?
How do you do that stuff?
How do you walk in the spirit?
He goes oh, let me show you.
And I thought, come on, bringit on.
(09:31):
And so he grabs this.
He had this book and it was theBible and he handed it to me.
He goes it's all right here.
And my heart just sunk.
I was just like, ah, the Bible.
(09:52):
It's like the book that was onthe bottom of my list, if even
on the list of books to read, because I associate it with
religion, dead religion, readbecause I associated with
religion, dead religion and adead book, old dead book, dead,
meaning it didn't have anyrelevance to me at all, it was
(10:14):
just words on a page.
And he goes you know, there's adifference between you just
reading this and you and Godreading it together, having the
(10:36):
author read it with you.
And that was like a eurekamoment Having the author read
the book with me, because theauthor can bring it to life.
So you just ask him, just askGod to go through this with you.
(11:01):
And so I asked him well, wheredo I start, and it just starts
at the beginning.
And so I did, and I have beeninvolved in that journey since,
(11:31):
because the author has beenreading this book to me for now
the past what?
40, 50 years?
And it's still full of thingsthat are new revelations to me.
(11:54):
Amazing how alive these 66 booksare that make up the book,
which that's what Bible means.
The book Make up the book.
And so, without apology, wearound here are people of the
book, I'm a man of the book andso, without apology, we around
here are people of the book, I'ma man of the book, I live by
the book because I walk withGod's help, by his word, because
(12:20):
his word is true and so.
So this walking in the spiritis going to be something that
we're going to focus in on for awhile, together with the life
of Jesus and his work on thecross, what he accomplished, the
(12:41):
efficacy of what took place onthe cross, his blood, his
covenant, his resurrection, hisascension, the centrality of
Jesus, but also, in that, ourwalking in the Spirit, because
it's relevant, it's very germaneto how we go about living our
(13:03):
life in relationship with Godand with one another.
And so, from the Bible I'mgoing to be reading from a book
in the New Testament, the bookof Galatians.
The book of Galatians, galatians, chapter 5, verse 16, verse 16,
(13:30):
through chapter 6, verse 10.
And I'm going to make a couplepoints of commentary as I'm
reading, but primarily I'm justgoing to read straight from the
scriptures and then make a fewcomments at the end and then
(13:51):
we'll pray.
But from Galatians, chapter 5,verse 16, paul the author, the
apostle Paul, writes to thechurch in Galatia.
And now Holy Spirit, speakingto us, says so.
(14:19):
I say Holy Spirit speaking tous, says so.
I say live by the Spirit, orwalk by the Spirit, or walk in
the Spirit.
Walk in the spirit.
Live by the spirit and you willnot gratify the desires of the
(14:44):
sinful nature, for the sinfulnature desires what is contrary
to the spirit and the spirit, what is contrary to the sinful
nature.
They are in conflict with eachother, so that you do not do
(15:06):
what you want.
But if you are led by thespirit, you are not under the
law.
The acts of the sinful nature, and now he's going to list them.
The acts of the sinful nature, and now he's going to list them,
the acts of that nature that sogripped us prior to knowing
(15:27):
Jesus and still tries to attachitself to us or distract us from
our relationship with Jesus andcause us to feed into it.
(15:48):
Because the acts of the sinfulnature are obvious Sexual
immorality, impurity anddebauchery.
Which debauchery is?
Doing things in excess, likehaving a glass of wine no,
having like 25 glasses of wine.
Excess Idolatry and witchcraft, hatred, discord, jealousy.
(16:17):
Fits of rage interesting fitsof rage, interesting fits of
rage.
You ever see someone who canget a fit of rage?
It's amazing.
It'd be a real, seeminglygentle person, but if you cross
them and you see that fit ofrage, it looks good, kill man,
and sometimes it's a tonguecould kill.
(16:40):
And by the kill man.
And sometimes, if the tonguecould kill and, by the way it
does, if looks could kill, you'dbe dead.
Fits of rage, selfish ambitionthat's a thing.
Dissensions meaning creatingconflict in people's lives,
(17:01):
where relationships are affectedand they are disrupted, and
factions and envy, drunkenness, orgies and the like.
I warn you, as I did before, that those who live like this
(17:21):
will not inherit the kingdom ofGod, but the fruit of the Spirit
, the fruit of the Spirit, theoutgrowth of walking in
cooperation with the Spiritthat's living in you, you being
(17:43):
the temple, me being the temple,we being the temple of Holy
Spirit, of God's Spirit, of God,the Spirit living in us.
The fruit, the outgrowth of himliving in us and us cooperating
(18:05):
with him, is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness,
faithfulness, gentleness,goodness, faithfulness,
gentleness and self-control.
Against such things there is nolaw.
(18:29):
Those who belong to ChristJesus have crucified the sinful
nature with its passion anddesires.
Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the
Spirit.
Woo-hoo, there we are now.
Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the
Spirit.
Let us not become conceited, provoking and ending each other.
(18:50):
Right, right, come on.
Let's keep our eyes on Jesus, not on competition with one
another, but on cooperation withone another, and our eyes on
Jesus walking in the Spirit.
(19:11):
It's almost so mystical manWalking in the Spirit, almost
like walking on water.
Walking in the Spirit, almostlike walking on water.
Walking in the Spirit.
Paul goes on to say he goes.
Brothers, if someone is caughtin sin, you who are spiritual
(19:32):
should restore him gently.
Right, if we find someone whois struggling with an issue, and
those of us who are brothers, sisters in Christ, friends,
(19:53):
colleagues in the Lord, weshould restore one another,
restore that person ingentleness gently, because we
already know that we've donewrong.
I can beat myself up more thananyone else can when I've done
wrong, and when I'm restoredgently, it leaves a greater
(20:21):
impression on my life than ifsomeone browbeats me and treats
me harshly, telling me what Ishould do and shouldn't do, as
some sort of superior.
But watch yourself, or you mayalso be tempted.
(20:49):
Carry each other's burdens andin this way you will fulfill the
law of Christ.
If anyone thinks he issomething when he is nothing, he
deceives himself.
Each one should test his ownactions.
(21:11):
Then he can take pride inhimself without comparing
himself to somebody else, foreach should carry his own load.
Anyone who receives instructionsin the word must share all good
things with his instructor.
Meaning if you have goodteachers, pastors, prophetic
(21:34):
people, apostolic individuals, even evangelists, people with
the evangel the good news and wegot money, man, it's our
privilege and our responsibilityto support that person
(21:59):
financially and also to supportthem with our prayers, with our
encouragement to support, because when you're out in the
front lines, sometimes I mean itlooks different than what it
really is.
I mean it looks different thanwhat it really is.
Sometimes it can be pretty hardand it can take a toll on a
(22:27):
person.
So those who are teachingreally can use encouragement.
Do not be deceived.
God cannot be mocked.
A man reaps what he sows.
The one who sows to please hissinful nature from that nature
will reap destruction.
The one who sows to please theSpirit, from the Spirit will
(22:56):
reap eternal life.
Let us not become weary indoing good, for at the proper
time we will reap a harvest ifwe do not give up.
Let us not become weary indoing good, for at the proper
time, we will reap a harvest ifwe do not give up One more time.
(23:25):
Let us not become weary indoing good, for at the proper
time, we will reap a harvest ifwe do not give up.
Therefore, as we haveopportunity, let us do good to
(23:47):
all people, especially to thosewho belong to the family of
believers.
Walking in the spirit, walkingwith the spirit, life in the
spirit.
What an amazing way of living.
(24:12):
It is more than just goodconversation.
It's an actual reality meantfor us to take and to apply to
(24:40):
our life and in so doing, beginto participate in a
demonstration of God's kingdomand power advancing on planet
Earth.
Praise God, his kingdom come, his purposes, his plans be done,
(25:07):
and his plan is for theexpansion of his kingdom on
planet Earth to the point thathis kingdom covers this Earth as
the waters cover the sea.
His kingdom covers this earthas the waters cover the sea.
God has called us to colonizeplanet earth with his kingdom
(25:27):
and has given us the power to doso.
His very spirit, the samespirit and the same power that
raised Jesus from the dead, dwells in us.
But sometimes we get weary for avariety of reasons.
(25:50):
Sometimes we get weary becausewe try to do it on our own again
, and God lets us.
Sometimes we get weary becausewe get involved and we don't
(26:12):
take time to rest.
There is a rhythm to life andit goes like this Work, rest,
worship and play.
We need all four of those Work, rest, worship and play.
(26:33):
If we have too much work, weburn out.
If we have too much rest, weburn out.
If we have too much rest, nothing gets done.
If we have too much play, wereally don't see world issues in
a real way.
And if we have too much worship, sometimes we lose touch with
(26:58):
things that we need tounderstand concerning the
already and the not yet theworld that we live in.
Personally, I think it's reallyhard to have too much worship
going on in one's life theworship of God but I believe you
(27:23):
know what I mean where otherthings aren't attended to.
So there are reasons for usgetting weary, but there's a
mandate for us not to let thatcontinue on, because we are
(27:49):
responsible for our own lives.
Yes, god being with us carriesus if we walk with him according
to his ways.
And sometimes that pendulum youknow, I mean work, rest,
(28:10):
worship, play.
In a perfect world, we'd bedoing that perfectly all the
time.
But we all know that thependulum in life swings and
sometimes we swing over in onedirection and we need to come
back to the center.
And so we're going to be takingsome time and looking at this
(28:33):
whole aspect of us walking inthe spirit, being empowered, but
also having an awareness thatthat empowerment can at times
become so exhilarating that weburn out.
(29:00):
And there are many, many, manyexamples of that Many, many,
many examples of that whenpeople have started out strong
and have burned out in the end.
I want to finish strong, I wantus to finish strong, and God
(29:30):
has given us a way for that totake place.
So we don't need to becomeweary or we don't need to lose
heart, because weariness causeus to lose heart and to give up,
kind of like is this ever goingto really take place?
(29:54):
Is this ever really going tohappen?
Is what we've heard saidconcerning what God is going to
do, is that ever really going tohappen?
And the answer is yes, in itsproper time, god's proper time.
And God's proper time and God'sproper time.
(30:16):
As we all know, his ways are notour ways.
They are higher than ours.
His words, his ways, but theydo take place.
But they do take place and heis faithful to bring about what
(30:39):
he said.
And he has said that he isgoing to cause the knowledge of
his presence and the reality ofhis kingdom to cover the earth
as the waters cover the sea.
And it is true and amen, and weget to be part of that.
(31:06):
Let's pray, father, thank youfor once again, who you are and
what you're doing and how you'redoing it, and that you called
us.
You called me God, you calledme into participating in this
(31:32):
and you called us around thenations.
You called us to do it with youand to.
It's gotta be you, and sokingdom come and purpose of God
(32:00):
be done in the earth as it is inheaven.
Holy is your name, god, wehonor you, we believe you.
And concerning your name, god,we honor you, we believe you.
And concerning your ways, wesay amen.
And we stand here in the nameof Jesus and we say amen again,
(32:21):
amen, amen, amen, amen.
