Alright, folks,
we're going to continue on our
look into the book of 1 Samuel.
And right now we're in chapter10.
And if you recall reading inchapter 10 that Saul was going
to be the next king, or thefirst king, I should say, of
Israel.
The king that was in Israel atthe time was God.
(01:02):
It was a theocracy, meaning Godwas king, and then everyone else
was subject to his leadership.
And the people of Israel hadbegun to look around at other
nations to see how they weredoing things.
(01:24):
Because they knew that they weredoing things differently.
And they started comparingthemselves to other people,
which was really a dangerousthing to do because when you
start comparing yourself toother people, you run the risk
of measuring things the wrongway.
(01:45):
And it's not wise to compareoneself to another person.
If we're going to compareourselves to anyone, it would be
to compare ourselves with Jesus.
Because he is our example, he isthe center, he is the focus of
(02:06):
all things.
We behold him to become likehim.
And so the children of Israel,the nation of Israel, had looked
to the other nations and howthey were doing things, and they
were serving a god, an idol bythe name of Baal.
(02:30):
And there was a whole systemthat went along with Baal
worship.
And part of the worship of Baalwas to offer your children as a
sacrifice to Baal or to Molech,the whole structure of gods.
(02:54):
And then once you would do that,you were secured then from the
gods a healthy lineage andhealthy crops.
And it was just a realdegradated way of doing things.
As well as there were certainpractices that were sexual
(03:15):
practices that if a person wereto give their seed, their sperm,
to a temple prostitute, whetherit would be male, female, or
animal, you'd be secured, or sothe story goes, you'd have a
large crop that'd be promised toyou from these various gods.
(03:38):
And it was a very degradatedsystem, but it was a system that
Israel bought into because itappealed to that lower base
nature that we all have, theflesh.
It appealed to the lust of theflesh, the lust of the eyes, and
the pride of life, that we cando these things.
(04:01):
And we don't need to have a kingover us that we can't see.
We want to have a king rulingover us that we can see, like
the other nations.
And so Israel demanded that theywould get a king.
And God said, in essence, ifthat's what you want, then
(04:25):
that's what you're going to get.
But this is going to be the costof you having a king.
And he gave them a list of thenegative things that would take
place as a result of themwanting a king versus God.
But they said, the nation saidthey want things done the way
that the other people were doingthem.
And so they did.
(04:46):
And Saul was their first king.
And as we pick up the story inverse 14 in 1 Samuel chapter 10,
Saul's uncle had asked him andhis servant, Where have you
(05:09):
been?
Because these guys had been outlooking for the donkeys.
If you remember, God was in eventhe details of having the
donkeys go astray so that themen would come in contact with
Samuel.
Amazing how even in the smalldetails God is involved.
(05:30):
And so the uncle asks Saul andthe servant, Where have you
been?
And Saul says, Well, we'relooking for the donkeys.
But when we saw they were not tobe found, we went to Samuel.
Saul's uncle said, Tell me whatSamuel said to you.
Saul replied, He assured us thatthe donkeys had been found, but
(05:53):
he did not tell his uncle whatSamuel said about his kingship.
Interesting.
He didn't want his uncle to knowthat Samuel had said he was
going to be king because therewas something going on in Saul's
life that made him insecureabout being a leader.
(06:16):
Not a good sign.
Not the best way you want tostart things out.
Samuel summoned the people ofIsrael to Mizbah and said to
them, This is what the Lord, theGod of Israel, says.
I brought you up out of Egypt,and I delivered you from the
power of Egypt and all thekingdoms that oppressed you.
(06:39):
But you now have rejected yourGod who saves you out of all
your calamities and distresses.
And you have said, No, set aking over us.
So now present yourselves beforethe Lord by your tribes and
clans.
And when Samuel brought all thetribes of Israel near, the tribe
(07:02):
of Benjamin was chosen.
The tribe of Benjamin chosen,that's Saul's tribe.
Then he brought forward thetribe of Benjamin clan by clan.
And Maitre's clan was chosen,finally Saul, son of Kish, was
chosen.
When they looked for him, he wasnot to be found.
So they inquired further of theLord.
(07:23):
Has the man come here yet?
And the Lord said, Yes, he hashidden himself among the
baggage.
Then they ran and brought himout, and he stood among the
people.
He was head taller, he was ahead taller than all the peoples
and all the others.
Samuel said to the people, Doyou see the man the Lord has
(07:47):
chosen?
There is no one like him amongall the people.
Then the people shouted, Longlive the king.
Samuel explained to the peoplethe regulation of the kingship.
He wrote them down on a scrolland deposited before the Lord.
Then Samuel dismissed the peopleeach to his own home.
Saul went to his home in Gibeah,accompanied by valiant men whose
(08:10):
hearts God had touched, but sometroublemakers said, How can this
fellow save us?
They despised him and broughthim no gifts, but Saul kept
silent.
Rocky beginnings, folks.
Saul on the day of hiscoronation was so insecure about
(08:37):
being a leader that he hidamongst the bags.
Now, granted, this is a threethousand year old story, so the
culture was much different thenthan it is now.
But it would be the equivalenttoday of someone hiding in a
(08:58):
closet amongst the clothes, sothat he wouldn't be found.
Why would you be doing that onthe day of your coronation to be
a king?
You know, Israel had everyopportunity at that point in
(09:20):
time to say, you know, thisdoesn't really m match our idea
of how things should be goinghere.
This doesn't this doesn't lookwell.
This doesn't look quite right.
This doesn't bode well.
Yeah?
We should be doing somethingdifferent here.
(09:40):
But they didn't.
They barreled right on throughthat major red flag.
And the moral of the story, whatwe can learn from this is don't
(10:02):
run the red lights.
Don't go past the red flags.
Don't go past the warning belland the arm that lowers that
says, Stop, don't go anyfurther.
When God provides that in yourlife, don't do what Israel did.
(10:25):
Learn from this lesson righthere.
They chose a king because theywanted to be like other people.
And sometimes in our life wemake choices based upon the fact
that it looks like what otherpeople have is better than what
we have in our relationship withGod.
(10:48):
Because sometimes in ourrelationship with God, it
appears as though we don't getto experience the good things
that other people areexperiencing, or what looks like
to us the good things.
What we can't see, often what wedon't see are the consequences
(11:14):
or the price tag forexperiencing some of those
things.
The wages of sin is ultimatelydeath.
It's a death way of life andalso a death consequence.
(11:36):
There's a literal death thatultimately follows behavior that
is contrary to the ways of God.
And the fact of the matter is,what we give up in comparison to
what we receive from God, whatwe give up is far less than what
(12:00):
we receive, but because we'regiving something up and other
people have it, sometimes wehave inside of us a jealousy
that rise up that says, Well,I'm entitled to that.
That entitlement thing thatfollows jealousy.
(12:22):
I'm entitled to that.
Well, just because we can havesomething doesn't mean that it's
good for us.
Just because it's availabledoesn't mean that it's good.
Just because fentanyl isavailable doesn't mean that
(12:44):
having copious amounts of it isgoing to be good for a person.
Same goes for heroin.
Same goes for really just aboutanything in life to an excess.
And the people around Israel hadexcessive ways of living in
(13:06):
order to appease their gods.
And what the people of Israeldidn't see was the turmoil that
those cultures were in, theinternal fighting and bickering,
the backstabbing, but alwayslooking over your shoulder to
see if someone's after you.
(13:26):
They want what you have.
And they'll take it by force.
And on the surface, it mightlook as though they're just
absolutely in a place where theydon't experience any trouble at
all for living away that justgoes according to everything
they desire in their flesh.
(13:48):
Sex, music, food, whatever itmight be, we find that there is
a temptation that we all face,and that is to be like other
people that appear as thoughthey have something better than
we do.
Now, the fact that Israel ranthat red light, that warning
(14:12):
sign concerning Saul.
They could have said, We'regonna stop right here.
We made a mistake.
We made a mistake, and sometimesthat's the best thing that we
can do in a situation.
We can say, I've made a mistakeand I want to do something
different.
God, please help.
I've made a mistake.
(14:33):
Sometimes admitting that you'vemade a mistake, confessing your
sin, confessing the fact thatyou almost took the bait.
You almost took the bait, butyou didn't.
It's better to say that you madea mistake and look as though you
(14:53):
are a little bit foolish fortaking the bait that far than to
take it all the way and wind uplooking really foolish in the
end.
So there are good things that wecan learn from bad situations,
but if you find yourself in thatsituation right now where you
have made that choice and youalready crossed over that line,
(15:15):
thank God it's still not toolate.
There are things that areavailable right now to you, and
those things are the blood ofJesus and the forgiveness of God
that followed.
(15:36):
The blood of Jesus was shed forthe remission, not just the
forgiveness, the covering over,but the remission, the removal
of all your sins.
That is available now, even ifyou've crossed over that line,
and you're deeply involved in alifestyle that you never thought
(16:00):
you were going to be involvedin, like Israel, involved in the
whole system of Baal worship,where they were actually
offering their children asliving sacrifices, literally
their children burning alive ina sacrificial offering to
appease an idol, a false god, agod that wanted to be God but
(16:25):
was not God most high.
Having illicit sex, experiencingdiseases, eating contaminated
food, just the list goes on andon and on and on of the negative
things that incur as a result ofcrossing over these lines that
(16:50):
God has established for ourgood.
And ultimately, when we walk inthem, we experience so much more
than what others areexperiencing without them.
But because we don't have whatthey have, sometimes we want
that.
(17:11):
Sometimes we buy into it andyou're deep into it.
Now it's way too deep, and youdon't know what to do.
You feel like well now I'm fargone.
I'm too far gone.
No, you're not.
You're not too far gone.
Fortunately, if you hear thisword, you're not too far gone.
(17:34):
You can't unhear what I'msaying.
Jesus loves you.
He goes after the one.
He leaves ninety-nine peoplebeside you know behind to take
care of the one lost one.
That might be you.
He loves you.
(17:57):
His blood was shed for you, notjust for the first time you
sinned, but for the sins thatyou commit now and the sins that
you just might commit down theroad.
His blood covers all of thosetrespasses.
We've crossed over the line.
(18:17):
We don't want to take that forgranted, but at the same point
in time, we'd be foolish if wedid not reach out to receive
that.
Don't be foolish.
Don't continue on doing itbecause you're now too far gone,
because you're not.
That's a lie.
God can reach in and save yourlife right now if you just ask.
(18:39):
If you just ask and believe thatHe will.
He will.
He did to me.
I was too far gone in my mind.
But it wasn't too far gone inGod's mind.
He reached in and found me in acesspool of negative things.
(19:02):
And he brought me out.
I'm no longer in them.
I can say with confidence thatI'm clean, I'm pure, I've been
made holy by the blood of theLamb, Jesus Christ.
He has forgiven my sins andremoved them from me, and
(19:23):
doesn't make mention of them atall.
He'll do the same for you.
God would have intervened forIsrael, but they had to learn
the lesson the hard way.
And we're gonna learn a littlebit more about that coming up.
But the lesson now is when wesee those red lights, those
(19:50):
warning signs, let's payattention to them.
But if we haven't, just becauseyou're in now doesn't mean you
gotta stay in the grips ofnegative, sinful living.

In fact, Father, we
we look to you right now.
And we invite you by your spiritto apply to our lives the very
blood of Jesus, the cleansingpower of his blood, the
forgiving nature of your heart.

Forgive us our sins, God, as weforgive those who've sinned
against us.
And Lord lead us, don't lead usinto temptation, but deliver us.
Hallelujah.
Deliver us from evil.
(20:58):
Thank you.
Thank you that you reach intothe very depths to rescue us and
to bring us to the heights ofthe highest high.

Able now to make decisions anddeclarations that impact the

We stand here solely as a resultof the work of Jesus Christ, and
