SPEAKER_01 (01:22):
Holly folks, I want
to welcome you back to Life Are
on the Fire, and we are rightnow looking at the book of First
Samuel.
And today we're going to look at1 Samuel, primarily 1 Samuel
chapter 13, verses 16 through23.
(01:44):
That's the entire end of the13th chapter, and then some
portions from chapter 14.
And there are so many thingsthat are going on here, and
historically, we're talkingabout a battle between two
(02:04):
people that have been going onfor a long time.
And in our terms, this battlebetween the Philistines and
Israel had been going on forover 3,000 years.
It's 2025 right now, at therecording of this particular
podcast episode.
(02:25):
And these things date back toprior to us, right?
They date back over 3,000 years.
So this battle had been going onfor a long time.
It's still going on, in fact.
We're going to find out.
So in verse 16, in chapter 13,we read Saul and his son
(02:51):
Jonathan and the men with themwere staying in Gibeah, in
Benjamin, while the Philistinescamped at Nikmash.
And so the picture here isIsrael is settling things down
(03:11):
in the country.
They've divvied up the land, andnow they're doing the work of
occupying the land and dealingwith the resistance to that
taking place.
Because the people that wereliving there prior to Israel,
(03:32):
they weren't is prior to Israelmoving in, they didn't want to
leave.
They had settled down, they hadsettled in, and so they felt
entitled to that land, eventhough it had been given to
Abraham and his descendants tooccupy.
(03:59):
And that was Israel andPhilistine.
The Philistines did not havethat same bloodline.
Yet they were occupying thatland and did not want to move.
(04:22):
And so they had settled in andprovided for Israel resistance
to advancing.
And God, in his wisdom, did notdrive out all of the inhabitants
(04:46):
from the land when Israel movedin.
Because we find out later thatthe Lord said, If I would have
done that, wild beasts wouldhave come in and overtaken you.
So he provided an opportunityfor Israel to get strong by
allowing these people to remain.
(05:10):
But they would be defeated.
The enemy would be defeated ifthe people would keep covenant
with God.
They would be protected by GodAlmighty.
And yet Israel continued to tryto do things its own way.
(05:30):
They did not want to take andfollow God's instructions, which
is so like human beings.
And we get to see Israel doingwhat we do without people seeing
(05:56):
oftentimes what we're doing.
And here we have a nation thatwe're looking at, as well as
individuals, so that we can lookat their lives and see what they
did right and what they didwrong.
That's why the scriptures are sopowerful because they don't
(06:18):
mince words.
They allow us to see things theway they really were, and in
that respect, the way thingsreally are.
God is not insecure aboutrevealing the fact that things
don't always go according towhat we have in our plans.
(06:41):
And we tend to think thatbecause that doesn't go that
way, that God's through with us.
God's done.
Because we have some defeats, that means that God is
completely done with us forever.
And we're now on our own, so wemight as well go back and do our
old thing, our old way ofliving.
Israel fell into that, and theywere in that situation right
(07:06):
now.
But Jonathan, Jonathan hadsomething else in his heart.
There was something that hadtaken place in Jonathan's life
as a result of him having arelationship with a young man in
(07:26):
a way that just totally rivetedhis heart and solidified his
relationship with God.
Isn't that funny how friendshipscan do that?
How we can stimulate one anotherand spur one another on into
ways of living that we werepreviously maybe wanting to live
(07:48):
up to, but just didn't feel thestrength or the ability to.
But because we aligned ourselveswith the right people, we get we
just get empowered.
And Jonathan had aligned himselfwith David, but he also had, as
we find out, another secretweapon.
And in verse 14 of chapter one,we see something that's very
(08:13):
important.
One day we read, one dayJonathan, son of Saul, said to
the young man bearing his armor,Come, let's go over to the
Philistines outpost on the otherside.
(08:35):
But he did not tell his father.
So Jonathan had decided with hisarmor bearer, his armor bearer
being the secret weapon.
He decided with his armor bearerto go up to the other side, but
he said to his armor bearer, inverse eight, Jonathan said, Come
(08:59):
then, we will cross over towardthe men and let them see us.
If they see us, wait there untilwe come to you.
We will stay where you are, notgo up to them.
But if they say, Come up to us,we will climb up because the
Lord will because that will beour sign that the Lord has given
(09:21):
them into our hands.
So both of them showedthemselves to the Philistine
outposts.
Look, said the Philistines, theHebrews are crawling out of the
holes they were hiding in.
The men of the outposts toJonathan and his arm bearer,
come up and we'll teach you alesson.
(09:42):
So Jonathan said to his armbearer, climb up after me.
The Lord has given us them intothe hand of Israel.
But one of the key things inthis whole picture is found in
(10:06):
verse six, where Jonathan saidto his young armor bearer, come,
let us go over to the outpostsof those uncircumcised fellows.
Perhaps the Lord will act in ourbehalf.
Nothing can hinder the Lord fromsaving, whether by many or by
few.
SPEAKER_00 (10:30):
Amazing insight.
SPEAKER_01 (10:32):
That's faith.
If God's in it, it's gonnahappen if there's a few people,
whether or not there's a fewpeople or there's a ton of
people.
If God's in it, it's gonnahappen.
Now that attitude right there, that attitude came as a result
(10:53):
of Holy Spirit working in thisman's life.
But also it came as a result ofhis armor bearer being with him,
heart and soul.
In the battle, he was going tobe in the battle with Jonathan,
(11:15):
outmanned, out armed,outmaneuvered, but not
outprotected.
SPEAKER_00 (11:29):
Israel was protected
by covenant, God's covenant to
Abraham, his promise.
SPEAKER_01 (11:40):
And his promise was
significant, and his promise was
enough.
And if God said it, that settleit.
It's going to be done whetherit's by many or by few, and the
same is true today.
But back to Jonathan and hisarmor bearer.
(12:04):
I want to keen on that, man.
Because in our lives, in ourpersonal lives, we are part of a
kingdom.
Those of us who are believers inJesus are grafted in like a wild
(12:24):
olive branch being grafted intoan olive tree, becoming a
recipient of the same nutrientsof that natural olive tree.
We are that tree grafted in,those of us who are Gentiles, to
the promises provided to Israel, but also to the new covenant
(12:48):
that Jesus has cut.
In his body by his broken bodyand shed blood, he has cut
covenant with us.
Even a greater covenant becauseit's a covenant that is not on
stone written and chiseled byhand, but it's in our hearts.
(13:13):
His word is in our hearts.
Powerful.
Powerful, powerful, powerful.
So Jonathan and his armor bearerwere recipients of the power of
(13:35):
the Holy Spirit and the promiseof the covenant.
And they were resting on that.
And the word of God is faithful.
His word is faithful.
He will fulfill what he haspromised.
He watches over his word toperform it.
He's watching over his word andlooking for an opportunity to
(13:59):
perform it.
And he performs it through thevehicle of faith.
His kingdom is manifest throughfaith into planet earth.
It comes from heaven and it'smanifest to us and through us on
planet earth for those of us whoare believers in Jesus.
(14:21):
Now, some of us are Jonathans, and some of us are the ones who
carry the shield of the one whois a leader in front of us.
(14:42):
And we all have opportunities inlife to be both.
Sometimes at the same time, other times we are either
Jonathan, we're the ones thathave the privilege and the
(15:03):
responsibility to lead, we're infront, we're up front, and we
lead by example.
Or we are armor bearers and wesupport someone else in
(15:25):
leadership, ultimately God, butsometimes it's other people that
we are supporters of.
SPEAKER_00 (15:34):
We support the
vision of another man, of
another woman.
SPEAKER_01 (15:41):
We support them.
We're support role people.
We come alongside of and wesupport.
Which is more important.
You can't say more important.
One is more visible, andsometimes one gets more
recognition, meaning your namegets mentioned.
(16:01):
Jonathan had his name mentionedin Scripture.
The armor bearer, we don't knowwho he was.
Sometimes we are going to bethat person who is going to be
unrecognized by name, but we'rerecognized by the function.
Because we contributed tosomething in the midst of the
(16:24):
battle.
The armor bear was as much inthe battle as Jonathan was.
Even though Jonathan was gettingcredit for some things, it was a
it was a dual effect.
It was a combined effort.
Jonathan needed the strengthalso and support of his armored
(16:44):
bear.
And leaders need the support ofthe people around them.
They need to know that peopleare with them.
Really, really, really withthem, willing to be in the
battle with them, not justsaying, you go ahead and fight
and we're gonna watch.
You go ahead and do all the workand we're gonna watch.
And we'll see what goes on.
(17:06):
Please entertain us.
Show us something that we can besurprised and wonder about.
Tell us something that we wantto hear.
Show us something we want tosee.
Keep us occupied and entertainedversus help us be in the battle
(17:26):
with you, fighting hand in hand, even if we don't get our names
mentioned.
Even if you don't get your namementioned, or if you're a group
of people and you come alongsideof someone else who's doing
something of let's just say anoutreach, and it is their
(17:49):
outreach to lead, and they gettheir name recognized, but you
are in support of what's goingon, man, you share in the
victory because you were sharingin the battle.
Being a nobody doesn't meanyou're nothing.
(18:15):
Meaning if your name isn'tmentioned, that doesn't mean
you're not important.
Sometimes we become as valuable,if not more valuable, when a
name isn't mentioned.
How many things have gone onwithout someone's name being
(18:35):
recognized in today's world?
How many fellowships exist thatmay never be mentioned in the
paper or any magazine or anyarticle on the internet or any
other place, and they still areinvolved in kingdom activity,
regardless of whether or notthey are recognized.
(18:56):
That man, that commitment, thatlove, that devotion, that type
of passion, it requires leadersas well as supporters in order
to be successful.
It requires Jonathan and hisarmor bearer.
It required it then and itrequires it now.
Who are we in situationcurrently?
(19:18):
Are we the Jonathan?
Then let's be humble andobedient.
But also appreciative of thosearound us who are helping.
And if you are a person who ishelping, let's be appreciative
of the fact that you're in themix, you're in the middle of
(19:39):
what's going on, you're reallyin what's happening.
It's just your name doesn'thappen to be mentioned.
That's not a bad thing.
That can actually be a goodthing.
Because the more visible aperson's name gets, the more
attention they get also from theenemy.
(20:00):
So we, as people whose names maynot be mentioned, need to be
careful that we're not covetingor jealous or desiring to have
our name mentioned because wehave some kind of unmet need to
be known, to be famous, to bepopular, to be big, to be
(20:24):
recognized, to be successful, tohave your name mentioned.
SPEAKER_00 (20:29):
You just want to see
and hear your name mentioned
publicly.
SPEAKER_01 (20:35):
That's if if if if
if that's the case, you might
get that recognition, but that'sgoing to be your reward.
And in the end, that recognitiongoes away so quickly.
SPEAKER_00 (20:48):
The same people that
said Hosanna to Jesus were some
of the same people that saidcrucify him.
Compliments are fickle, but trueencouragement is what we need.
SPEAKER_01 (21:06):
Compliments can be
intoxicating.
But really, there's better lifeto be lived than a life being
lived intoxicated.
SPEAKER_00 (21:17):
There's more to be
lived.
It's better.
SPEAKER_01 (21:23):
So sometimes we're
Jonathan, and sometimes we're
the armor bearer.
Who are you?
And what is your attitude in themidst of it?
My encouragement is that is theattitude is one of praise and
worship to God, because He iscentral.
Jesus, if Jesus is being exaltedand His name is being exalted,
(21:47):
who cares whether or not ournames are mentioned?
His is being mentioned.
He is being exalted.
If our attitude is that way, thevictory.
It belongs to the Lord, and inthat case, it belongs to us as
well.
Hallelujah.
Let's pray.
SPEAKER_00 (22:07):
Father, I thank you,
God, and I humbly bow myself by
my head before you in honor ofyou.
SPEAKER_01 (22:19):
I lift you high,
Lord Jesus, and your name, and
desire for it to be exalted, foryour name to be remembered,
regardless of whether or not myname is ever mentioned.
Mentioned just as armor bearer.
But you, the ultimate Jonathan, your name be mentioned, Jesus.
(22:42):
That's what we want.
So, Holy Spirit, grant us ourdesire.
SPEAKER_00 (22:47):
We pray as we stand
here in Jesus' name and ask you
to make us more like Him.
We thank you and we love you.
SPEAKER_01 (22:59):
We honor you, and we
say Amen.
Amen.
Amen.
Amen.
Amen.
All right, folks, we love you.
