you find lasting unshakableunwavering unmessable-with joy
and gratitude. We're going to bethrowing around encouragement, a
little bit like confetti andgiving you support to live your
very best life.

(00:29):
Ciao friends welcome to episodethree of season three of the
life out loud podcast. I am acreator of this podcast and your
host, Desireé Melfi Bozzo, andfriends, I am so glad you are
here! As you may know, thisseason, we're doing a deep dive
into the fruits of the spirit, the what of the what? What

(00:51):
fruits? Who has fruit? I don'tknow. If you aren't familiar
with them, head back to thefirst episode of this season.
Give it a quick listen, it'sgoing to give you the
foundational knowledge to getyou up to speed and ready for
some big gains in life outcomesthis season. Who doesn't like
that? The fruits of the Spiritare really important because

(01:15):
they act as a barometer andlife. As you may know, barometer
measures atmospheric pressureand is used to forecast the
weather. When we apply it to ourlife, the fruits of the Spirit
do just that. Whether we arebearing fruit or not, and the
kinds of fruit we bear is ameasure of the atmosphere in our

(01:36):
life. And oftentimes, it's areally good gauge of the future
and what's to come if wecontinue our patterns. Mind
blown, right? Yeah, mine too.
Galatians five, New Testament ofthe Bible way in the back, tells
us the fruits of the spirit, arelove, which we covered in the
last episode, joy and peacewhich we're going to cover in

(01:57):
this episode. And in comingepisodes, patience, kindness,
goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self control. So
let me give you an example.
Perhaps lately in life, you'refeeling down in blue, not a lot
of cheer. Maybe you'redepressed, maybe you're sad. The
seasons where you (ugh) can'tseem to catch a break. And there

(02:20):
are more metaphorical cloudsthan sunshine. This, my friends
is a sure sign of a lack of joyin our lives. You might be
thinking, huh? What? Yeah, justhang with me. I'll explain it.
What about when – I'm gonna giveanother example life is more
chaos than peace? When the to dolists seem to multiply even as

(02:44):
we're checking items off. Haveyou ever been in that place in
life where you're giving all youhave and it's not even making a
difference? Like you can't evenmake a dent? Perhaps feelings of
discord or strife weigh heavy onyou. That, my friends is a lack
of peace. So I want to spendsome time today talking about

(03:08):
joy and peace because I trulybelieve like gut of my soul,
truly believe that, no matterthe circumstances happening in
your life right now, like rightthis moment, the circumstances
swirling around you I trulybelieve joy and peace is
attainable. I believe thisbecause I have lived through
moments in life that haveattempted to suck every ounce of

(03:31):
joy and peace from me. And inthose tumultuous moments, I've
been able to uncover ways tobecome unshakable in the joy and
peace I possess. Very easy forme to say, has it been easy in
real time? Absolutely not. Butit's allowed me to emerge on the
other side of this with joy andpeace embedded in my heart and

(03:54):
my spirit in an unshakable way.
And I want this for you, too, inabsolutely every area of your
life. Now, maybe you're sittingthere like, yeah, she doesn't
get it. Dez, you have no ideawhat I'm going through. You

(04:16):
don't understand mycircumstances, they are way
worse than you can ever imagine.
And to that I say, friends, comehang out with me and learn about
our God. He's seen every trial, every mistake. He knows
everything that's happened, andhe knows everything that's going
to happen. And he can walk us tojoy and peace every time. One of

(04:38):
my favorite pastors once said“you are not too far gone for
our Savior.” Friends, that's allof us. So, here's what I want
you to do. Trust me, grab yourmost delightful cup of coffee
and Let's talk about the fruitsthat come after love – joy, and

(05:01):
peace.
I don't know if you know thisabout me, but I'm not a girl who
likes to bet too often. Did youknow that? I enjoy my money in
my bank account and in myinvestments. That being said, I
bet if I said close your eyes, and get really present to your

(05:25):
most joy-filled moment, a fewthings would happen. A smile
would probably appear on yourface, perhaps your body would
relax. You would probablybreathe a little slower, and a
little deeper. The tension ofthe moment, might ease up a
little. The feeling of joy doesthat. Joy by definition is a

(05:51):
feeling of pleasure or happinessthat comes from success, good
fortune, or a sense of well, being. That kind of joy is
wonderful, and worldly, and isoffered so many amazing and
thrilling moments in this life.
But the joy I'm talking abouttoday is a deep, unshakable joy
that is lasting, no matter theworldly circumstances. Joy is

(06:14):
something that we should hold asa lasting heart posture. It's
not positivity or optimism. Thiskind of joy that I'm talking
about isn't from the world. It'ssourced from God. And let me
unpack that because that's,that's kind of heavy. When we
get to know God and a deeppersonal level, we can access
true joy. This is a joy that cansurpass every understanding.

(06:36):
Every circumstance. It’s a joythat can be accessed in any and
all times. If you're anythinglike me, sometimes we think we
are seeking joy. When we aresearching the world for things
to fill our yearning souls, weindulge in worldly pleasures,
hoping that they will fill uswith joy and make us happy. They
won't. I know firsthand friendsbecause I've tried. I've bought

(07:01):
things I didn't need with moneyI didn't have to impress people
I didn't even really like andthe funny thing is, they didn't
even notice because they weredoing the same thing. I've
indulged in amazing food to fillmy yearning soul and all it left
me with was a tummy ache. Anyoneelse feel me on this?

(07:23):
Like joy, peace is alsosomething that we should hold as
a lasting heart posture. Whereare my friends out there that
are going through this world Ibreakneck speed just seeking a
little peace, just a littleslice of peace in between the
dinging email and the demandinggoals to reach in the call from
the career ladder that we'resupposed to be climbing a little

(07:44):
peace when the littles and thelaundry call for your attention.
Peace when life doesn't happenthe way we are hoping. And the
world is in chaos and the peoplewe love are sick. Should I go
on? I'm sure if I do, I'm goingto hit all of the places where
you might need a little slice ofpeace for your restless heart
and mind. Peace is defined astranquility or freedom from

(08:06):
disturbance. That is great on aworldly level. But we all know
that everyday life isn't alwaysor let's be honest, ever
tranquil or free fromdisturbance. So this tells me we
must go deeper. We need to seeka lasting peace that will be
steadfast, no matter thecircumstance. After spending a

(08:30):
lot of time searching for joyand peace, I actually found it
in the most unlikely of places.
Well, not looking back, I guessit wasn't the most unlikely but
I didn't know that at the time.
Friends, I discovered joy andpeace almost an accident in what
was to be a last ditch effort. Ifound it in the Bible. I read

(08:55):
countless stories of people whowere able to have joy and peace
in the most difficultsituations. Through strife,
through infertility, throughsadness, through war, through
marriage problems through deaththrough sickness, and so many
hard and horrible things. I readstory after story of people who

(09:17):
held joy and peace as acontinued demeanor in the
hardest of situations. Theywalked through situations that
would have broken me and theywalked through it unbroken.
through the Scriptures, the godof joy and the God of peace
becomes tangible to us. When welet the Holy Spirit guide our

(09:39):
time between Genesis andRevelation, it is a time that is
multiplied in joy and peace. Iread once that joy is what comes
from an intimate and consistentrelationship with God. In John
14 Peace is what Jesus left uswith when he left this world. So
if I have an intimate andconsistent relationship with God

(10:02):
and Jesus left his peace herewith us in the form of the Holy
Spirit. Then I can look atRomans 15:13, and allow it to
embed itself into my soul. “Maythe God of hope fill you with
all joy and peace, as you trustin Him, so that you may overflow
with hope, by the power of theHoly Spirit.” We have to

(10:25):
actively trust in the Lord, actively get to know Him, trust
Him and build a relationshipwith Him. I want you to think
for a second about the anatomyof your deepest friendships like
your people like your OG people, right? When I think about mine,
they didn't come by accident, these relationships and

(10:46):
friendships they didn’t justshow up. They came by actively
pursuing them, actively pursuingthat person, reaching out being
there being available to themshowing up making time to talk
to them, connect with them, learn everything about them,
serve them. We have to knowJesus in this way. We have to

(11:07):
keep our eyes fixed on him. Wehave to know who he is and what
he's about. It is only throughknowing him on a personal level
that we're going to receive Hisjoy in his peace. The kind that
is unshakable, the kind thatisn't defined by circumstance or
situation. The kind that iseverlasting.

(11:29):
Friends, bearing the fruits ofjoy and peace in our life is not
an easy task. It takes diligentintentionality over and over and
over and over. It takes timewith our Bibles open and the
rest of the world on silent.
Taking in the word, it takestime with our Bibles closed and

(11:51):
quiet prayer with our Savior. Isaid it before I'm not the
betting type, just not - notbuilt that way. However, I'm
willing to bet that if you getto know Jesus on a personal
level, joy and peace will beginto bloom their beautiful,
incredible fruits in your life.

(12:14):
Friends, I hope you enjoyedepisode three of season three. I
hope that you see that joy andpeace are things that you can
attain every day, every momentof your life. Send me a message.
I always love hearing yourthoughts. Come back next time
and let's throw moreencouragement around like

(12:35):
confetti. But be careful asalways, if you get too close,
you just might get some on you.

Cardiac Cowboys

Cardiac Cowboys

The heart was always off-limits to surgeons. Cutting into it spelled instant death for the patient. That is, until a ragtag group of doctors scattered across the Midwest and Texas decided to throw out the rule book. Working in makeshift laboratories and home garages, using medical devices made from scavenged machine parts and beer tubes, these men and women invented the field of open heart surgery. Odds are, someone you know is alive because of them. So why has history left them behind? Presented by Chris Pine, CARDIAC COWBOYS tells the gripping true story behind the birth of heart surgery, and the young, Greatest Generation doctors who made it happen. For years, they competed and feuded, racing to be the first, the best, and the most prolific. Some appeared on the cover of Time Magazine, operated on kings and advised presidents. Others ended up disgraced, penniless, and convicted of felonies. Together, they ignited a revolution in medicine, and changed the world.
